hi everyone Jennifer here in today's tea time with Jennifer we're going to talk about the word adulting now this generation has turned the word adult into a verb adulting and boy are they having a hard time doing it what does that mean for this upcoming generation what does it mean for our society stay tuned on tea time with Jennifer and we will talk about it okay so the other day I was walking through HomeGoods and I ran across this canvas print and it says I can't adult today I had to take a picture of it and I knew I was going to talk about it on the blog because I'm sure most of you have heard you know the trendy phrase oh I can't adult today or adulting is hard so basically I think it's young people I'm gonna blame this on Millennials okay Millennials have turned the word adult into a verb adulting and apparently adulting is hard and so you you see this canvas print that I saw at HomeGoods I had to take a picture of it because yes it's supposed to be a light-hearted joke and I'm sure that some you know recently graduated college student will buy that and put it on her walls but I actually think that it is a sign of the times honestly and I think there is something to the fact that people honestly don't feel like adulting these days so while this canvas is truly meant to be a light-hearted joke I think I actually believe that people today have a hard time dealing with adult responsibilities so well it's supposed to be tongue-in-cheek oh I can't adult today or adulting is so hard I actually think that people are struggling with being responsible adults basically what does it mean to be an adult when you are an adult you suddenly have responsibilities childhood is over you need to pay your bills you need to take care of your children you need to take care of your home you need to do your work well go to work and all of these things that people have done you know for centuries suddenly it's too hard for them to do so we have these you know a little tongue-in-cheek you know means and gifts and canvas prints that say I cannot adult today so I wanted to share three different things with you that I recently found through various people so the first one is blimey cow blimeycow is a YouTube channel and they post once a week and they are so funny they just post a lot of social commentaries and I find their social commentaries to be very funny very satire parody driven so they just posted a video called no you are not adulting and that's quite funny I'm gonna link that below the second one is something that a reader of mine named Susan sent me and it's a video parody as well called gotta love Millennials and it's a parody and it's sung to the theme Oh blah do blah you know by the Beatles so it's it's about Millennials the millennial generation and it's it's funny I mean I even think Millennials would think it's funny because you know they're hopefully able to poke fun at themselves as well and then the third article that I want to discuss today and I will link it below it's from Town and Country and a reader sent this to me as well and it shows how college students used to dress now what do these things have in common with adulting my spin on everything today is that we as an adult generation and I'm not just saying Millennials I'm saying all of us Millennials Gen Xers maybe even some baby boomers we are so distracted by modern entertainment by our smartphones by social media by binge watching Netflix by you know watching HGTV all day long I don't know it what people do by even watching youtube channels we are so distracted and and so consumed with wanting to be entertained and wanting to be relaxed and live luxuriously that we are finding everyday activities that are now can to be adulting you know like maybe doing the laundry or cleaning our kitchen or completing a deadline at work or you know taking care of our children all day long or finding it too hard and I actually do believe that people are finding it too hard the thing is is that our society needs responsible adults we need them we need people to cut the distractions to make their home life a priority to do their work whether or not it's their life purpose or not to do their work to the best of their ability and not wish they were doing something else okay this kind of extended childhood this extended adolescence that so many people are experiencing you know they'd rather be playing video games or watching television or on Facebook all day rather than getting stuff done so today I'm tee time with Jennifer I just wanted to you know highlight this a little bit what is the problem with adulting and why are people having such a problem with it today definitely see the symptoms of this in our society and I can show you where the first place you can see it is in how people dress and you know what my critics are always telling me Oh Jennifer you're so superficial you know it's not about what people look like it's about what's on the inside you know or they'll say you know that it's it's materialism to care about what you wear and all of that so of course you've heard this a thousand times if you've watched my channel but it's not about that it's I do not believe that dressing properly is about you know vanity or materialism or any of that it's a matter of respect and it's a matter of showing the world that you are you are respectful that you are capable that you're able-bodied that you are ready that you are prepared there's so many things that getting dressed properly says to society but yet you look around in society and people are roaming around in their pajamas in their exercise clothes their yoga pants all day long every day and that's what you see you see it from parents at the schools you see it from just people walking around shopping and that is a sign of the times these people are finding it hard to adult now I know if you go to an exercise class you're going to wear exercise clothes you're gonna go to the grocery store afterwards that's fine you know what I'm talking about though it's the symptom of people not able to put on what I call adult clothes they're gonna if they're gonna make a dull ting into a verb I'm going to call dressing up adult clothes so you know you see this and it does matter so for example if you were you know to send your child off to the first day of school and would you want their new teacher to be dressed professionally let's say you know in a nice slacks or a nice skirt or cardigan or whatever just looking presentable and professional or would you want their teacher to be in her pajamas still or for him for if it's a male teacher to be in his sweatpants exercise pants what would you want okay you have to ask yourself that question and there's a reason why so even if you don't have a job like that where you're teaching children or something it's so important to just dress up every day anyway you don't need a lot of clothes to do this as you have seen my husband and I especially my husband have very minimal wardrobes it does not take a lot of money to do this as you will see in poorer nations around the world where people really only have a few outfits that they look presentable so I think that looking presentable is definitely a symptom of the fact that people don't want to adult anymore this is something that I'm hearing a lot about from younger people and people who have just graduated from college or who are currently in college and I've heard about it personally in my life and also through other stories things that I've read about but sometimes young people they want they have an idea about the job that they want which is fantastic and actually one day I want to do a video on how to get a job how to land a job in an interview because I have some really good tips on that but the thing is is that they want they have their their heart set on this dream job and that's tastic and they should work toward that but sometimes you know younger people will think that a certain job is beneath them like you know being a waiter or waitress or working retail or just doing anything going around and washing your neighbor's cars whatever it is sometimes I'm finding and I've seen you know personal examples of this in my life young people think that that work is beneath them and so you know they want to go straight to the top and I like that attitude and that ambition and they can go straight to the top but those starter jobs are also valuable and I'll tell you why because even though you're not going to be doing them for the rest of your life they give you a work ethic and they give you an appreciation for the dollar and appreciation for working and they help you to become a stronger adult they help you to build character so my first job was working at the Golden Spoon frozen yogurt shop when I was I think 17 so I would serve frozen yogurt by day and I would mock their floors and clean the bathroom by night and I made very little money it was minimum wage and back then I think it could have been about six dollars an hour okay so it was it was not that much money but working a job like that helps build your character and it helps you want to strive to the next level and at least it's something I think that having a job is better than not having any job and to be worrying about money for young people definitely another symptom of this are people's disorganized homes and you know the homes are disorganized and cluttered and there's too much stuff brought into the homes and it's simply because that the time that we could be spending each day to organize our homes and put everything thoughtfully back in its place and create systems of organization are spent you know watching endless media television news movies Netflix shows whatever it is and I understand we're tired when we get home but this is just another symptom and you see this all around there's so many symptoms of lack of wanting to adult today it's time to grow up and it is time to adult so you are an adult and if you struggle with any of this if you struggle with watching the kids all day or you know cooking or cleaning your kitchen or running errands or sitting at the job or whatever it is whatever your lot in life is I implore you to embrace it and to relish being an adult and the wonderful responsibility that comes with that and just try to make the best of it it's really important that we don't mask our emotions and masks our dread of the tasks at hand by simply not doing them at all and just watching you know screens or just indulging our pursuits in other ways let's embrace being an adult adulting is not a verb it's just something that you are and it's something that you should do and that you should do with the happy heart that is it for today on tea time with Jennifer I hope you check out those links that I left below and I would love to hear from you today what do you think about the subject of adulting do you have trouble adulting do you know people who have trouble adulting what are your thoughts about this and do you notice symptoms in our society that suggests
