Let's talk about the Moccamaster!

[Music] hey everyone Chris G here and today I want to talk about the mocha Master coffee maker now the mocha Master is largely regarded as one of the favorite coffee makers among coffee enthusiasts and for a good reason it's reliable and it makes a fantastic cup of coffee but there are some gripes I have about the mocha master and what we want to find out today is if the mocha Master would be the right fit for you and if you should buy one yourself now mocha Master's inventor back in the Mr mocha Master back in 1975 said that he wanted the mocha Master to be the last coffee maker that you ever had to buy and I think by all accounts he succeeded in that goal the mocha Master is a very simple device with these very kind of clicky mechanical switches that um by the way supposedly there are some reliability issues with but they're easy to replace if they if they break but nevertheless everything on this thing is serviceable it's replaceable mocha Master sells aftermarket parts and overall the materials are like good quality with the exception of some of these cheaper Plastics that I will get into later on but the point is though is that it's a very basic machine and it doesn't do anything other than make coffee and that's both its pros and its cons depending on who you are now spoiler I love the mocha master and it is purely because of its Simplicity that I think it is an excellent machine and it does happen to produce a fantastic cup of coffee now this particular model is the select version and what that basically allows you to do by the way if you go to mocha Master's website they have the kbg the kvt kbbb DS there's a thousand of them and they all have kind of different little nuances as to what they are but ultimately they're all basically the same unit in terms of like what's under the hood basically you've got this nice copper coil boiler that makes your water the perfect gold brewed temperature uh this thing by the way is gold certifi SCA Gold Cup certified so uh anyway so it makes sure that everything is like the perfect temperature the perfect Brewing times and extraction periods and all that so you have the most excellent cup of coffee they do have models that have the stainless steel CF ey out there for one one with glass they also have ones that have like Auto cut off things like when you remove it uh they also have ones that offer you to have a little bit more control over the pourover mechanism but this is kind of the everyday person's mocha Master this particular one is the 10 cup model and I would say that by all accounts we've we've had a party where we've had four or five people over and it has made enough coffee for four or five people so unless you're doing some huge amounts of entertaining I think most people can do just fine with the 10 cup model uh usually I just Brew five cups in the morning for my wife and I and it's and it's uh more than enough uh this is a European Cup so I believe that's measured to like 5 ounces if I'm not mistaken anyway moving right along you pour the water in this little bin up here you grind your coffee and you P put it in this very cheap plastic device right here locks in place there you flick the switch where is it here there we go this one think it's this one right I can't I can't see it flick the switch and boom your coffee Brews like 5 minutes later this thing is actually exceptionally fast from basically the moment you put the the water in and the grinds in I mean it is basically like a 5 minute extraction time now the mocha Master is not a drip coffee maker it is what's more referred to as like an automatic pour over sort of like the ratio 6 and the ratio 8 coffee makers uh the ratio coffee makers look a lot more modern uh they're also made in the US whereas these are handmade in the actually the I think the ratio eight is made in the US I think the ratio six is made in China uh anyway um mocha Master though is handmade in the Netherlands um and I would say that by all accounts it shows I mean this thing came you know again looking I mean this is kind of a little bit used but uh this thing came looking pretty much pristine and well put together kind of like kind of like a 4Runner just everything just sort of fit together and was really really nice where I have my gripes with the mocha Master is when we bought it it only came with three paper coffee filters and it did not come with a reusable gold filter basket mocha Master sells one on their website so clearly they're not opposed to you using a gold filter uh however they didn't give you one now these machines I got this on sale during like Black Friday or something like that I got it for like 250 bucks which by the way is a hell of a lot of money anyway for what this thing is but brand new I think these things are going for about 350 to 370 bucks something like that and to not include a more than three paper filters or for that matter the reusable gold basket which basically every other Coffee manufacturer does that's a little bit of a slap in the face that just felt like mocha master was getting really really cheap and for really no reason at all now again a box of paper filters is not expensive I mean I think like for $2.99 you can get a box of like 300 of them and frankly thing works best I think with paper filters kind of like an arrow press you just get less sediment better cup of coffee mileage mileage will vary on that to each their own but nevertheless uh when we bought it of course I didn't have the paper filters I just didn't really think about it at the time this is not a big deal it's a it's a nitpick but still mocha Master should have been a little bit more come on guys just throwing like a pack of 20 or something in there so somebody can you know hit the prime button on Amazon to buy more or go to Target whatever next materials strong metals and Plastics except for all actually all of this stuff this stuff is all built like cheap for One this lid as cheap as plastic as can possibly be and while you would think to yourself it doesn't like have to be that great I mean no it doesn't but it's kind of like it it's it it showcases okay like why go cheap on this you everything else is stainless and and very wellb built and tough like why did you have to cheap out on this particular lid right here you could have made that stainless or maybe just a higher quality plastic and fine okay so the water carft doesn't need that but then like where you put the actual coffee you know grinds this thing is the same really cheap thin janky plastic and I don't like that it's plastic I wish that it was like I you know I don't know metal or something there's there's just a little bit too much plastic interaction with the mocha master your your water and your hot coffee is coming in contact with too much plastic I don't like it and I'm not alone in that most people don't like that either okay they they we want less plastic in the world not not more but nevertheless that's what you have uh for what it's worth though I mean again if this thing breaks and there's not much to it I mean it's you know you got a little spring action here going on but if this thing breaks it'd be pretty cheap to replace I'm sure for mocha Master's website but what I ultimately hate about this cheap plastic is that this thing is a little bit of a pain in the butt to kind of slide in here but this one the lid that goes on top wrestling with this thing to kind of get it in place like I I don't know it's just this thing just feels cheap and stupid and wobbly and shaky and and look at this like it shouldn't do that it's a $370 machine it should not do that the glass craft this glass is super ass thin it even says on it like do not bump because if you do this it will probably shatter into it ,000 pieces this cheap piece plastic piece of crap which by the way comes in contact with your coffee all the way I mean your coffee will just soak it in just sort I don't know it just like kind of loosely kind of comes on and off it's fumbly it's not built well there are far superior designs from like quez andart and other companies with their glass craps ultimately I would like to see mocha Master offer better materials for um the glass caraffe I mean I could have gone with the stainless one but I wanted glass cuz supposedly the stainless one you can kind of taste it a little bit I I don't have any personal experience with that but nevertheless it's what was was supposedly it's what I've heard from others Seattle Coffee Gear actually you should check them out they have a great Channel um but I I hate this cheap plastic lid uh this thing is going to wear out and I don't like that it's so much plastic coming in contact with the hot coffee uh don't like this thing it's easy to clean I mean you take a nice wet cloth and you just clean I'm not I should clean clean mine but anyway it's just you just take a wet cloth wipe it down and it's good to go uh supposedly the water arm here this one has been and I need to clean mine too the water arm has been redesigned uh in like the last couple of years and it's a much more Superior design supposedly um I guess the older models of the mocha Master didn't have as many holes or they weren't quite as strategically placed and as a result uh as a result uh you didn't get as wide of coverage over your coffee grinds which by the way is still actually kind of a problem with this particular unit now it doesn't really seem to get in the way of anything cuz again this thing produces a fantastic cup of coffee but nevertheless um I have found when I'm like Brewing some beans sometimes that like I'll like look over and see that like only half of them are saturated and I try to level them out as much as possible but there does seem to be a little bit of unevenness in the extraction process as it's as it's pouring over so um food for thought it's just worth mentioning anyway uh do I recommend the mocha Master uh absolutely um it is for people that just want a nice basic machine No Frills no Wi-fi no Bluetooth no smart features that you really ultimately don't need just a nice basic No Frills machine you will want a coffee grinder to uh to to kind of pair with this thing you can check out our coffee grinder video that we recently posted as to which one you should buy uh anyway um but you will want a coffee grinder for this thing because ultimately the best kind of coffee you'll get is from fresh ground beans uh and it does not have a built-in grinder or anything like that either um but if you're somebody that is looking for like you know auto start and scheduling and auto grinding and all of that stuff you're not going to find your your place at home with the mocha Master it's it just doesn't have any of that it's it's a no frills no luxury machine but that's the benefit of it is that you really never have to worry about this thing ever breaking and if it does it's easy to repair because it is so simple and it just looks so good I mean ultimately the mocha Master is just like a nice sort of mid-century modern piece of design and this thing will never look ugly and for that matter I don't think the ratio machines ever will either but this thing just it's timeless it just is so that's why I like the mocha Master is because all I have to do is come downstairs grind some coffee flick a switch and it's good to go so uh anyway do I recommend the mocha Master yes is it for everybody no and does mocha Master need to maybe rethink some of their material design absolutely but ultimately uh it's a good machine worth 370 bucks maybe wait to see if you can get it on sale like I did uh but you know again that's um to each their own with how how you want to spend your money but enough chitchatting about this machine let's go ahead and brew a cup and see how it tastes now before we plug it in and flick the switch to brew a delicious cup of coffee let's quickly talk about this second button right here now this particular select model allows you to choose between a full and half caraffe basically if you put it on the half caraffe mode uh it adjusts I believe like the extraction time as well as the hot plate temperature I don't think it adjusts the temperature of the water for the Brew brew period but um does a couple of other little small things but anyway um it basically just allows for a slightly uh better experience for a half cup of or a half caraffe of coffee versus a full 10 cup so that is basically what that second switch is there for anyway uh let's go ahead and fire her [Music] up [Music] and about 5 to 7 minutes later you are finished with your Brew process with the mocha master of course you need a Porsche mug because it makes the coffee taste even better but let's go ahead and give this a little a little test drive here smells good it's piping Baby by the way way this uh if you leave it on I think the machine stays on for like a few hours after you brew a cup of coffee it does have a number that it will stay on um it's not forever but it's it's like a few hours I think uh that it will continue to heat the uh the glass caraffe um by the way the models that have the stainless steel caraffe do not have a heat plate it is only the glass caraffe models that have a heat plate but uh anyway it'll keep your coffee warm or hot even for a long time some might even say it burns thee coffee but um I've never found it to be a problem I drink the coffee fast enough all right by the way these are Purity beans uh I have found that I really like the Purity bean bean because it just um supposedly there it's like mold free pesticide free and all that other crap so you know whatever it's good it's a good cup of black coffee I like my coffee black smooth no sediment tastes nice fruity clean better than your Diner typical diner coffee I like it that is the mocha Master again maybe not for everybody but it is a perfectly good coffee brewer for most people if they're willing to swallow the price tag um mocha Master if you're listening or watching use some better quality materials for some of the parts give us more than a three pack of filters that was really come on and um but otherwise it's a good machine so that's the mocha Master for you if you have any questions about the
