[Music] foreign [Music] hello i'm adam from no rolls bard and welcome to board game club where the first rule the board game club is a new hope although that would later be rebranded as the fourth rule of board game club and look where we are we're in we're in our brand new studio located within one of our favorite places drafts board game cafe in london who we've worked with to create this wonderful space where every week we'll gather together a group of our friends to play a board game to show you how much fun board gaming can be for more information about drafts you can check out their website link at the top of the description and you should by the way now let's crack open the safe to find out what game we're playing this week this week we'll be playing cosmic encounter designed by bill eberle jack kitridge bill norton and peter locker and published by fantasy flight games in the game we'll be playing different alien races each violently vying for galactic real estate in a war-torn galaxy in a bid to establish dominance over the very stars themselves it's my favorite game for detailed rules you could always watch my board game masterpieces video on it and we'll be covering the smaller stuff as and when it comes up but before we start here's how you play at the beginning of each turn a player will turn over a card from this destiny deck that will tell them who they have to fight so for example blue or have an encounter with which is a nicer way of saying invade wipe out the natives and hang up a home sweet home sign above the planet when you know who you're fighting you choose one of that player's planets send in your invading force and then each of you play a card face down you turn the cards over take the number of the card add it to the number of ships and whoever's got the highest number wins the invader wins they move in game one foreign colony and that is one-fifth of the way to victory the first player or players to reach five foreign colonies win they'll be doing that by forging alliances getting other players to add ships to the fight bluffing with cards betraying trust negotiating or using their special alien power whatever that may be who will emerge as the new benevolent emperor of the known universe let's find out as we play cosmic encounter [Music] joining me for the first ever in-person board game club i am joined by laurie hi i'm your boy john hello i'm dropping blair jefferson hello i'm joined by tom hello okay [Laughter] and of course they are joined by the reigning defending gods board game club champion which is only bloody me i love that we've done the entire room up looking super special and we still have the crappy little tape i've never seen this in person here it is it's so bad this could be yours can i hold it no are you board game club champion black no yeah then you will never never touch this right we are gonna start we're gonna start the game and we're gonna start by turning over the destiny deck that player will go first it is blair okay oh very exciting all right so i now need to flip another one over to see who i'm encountering correct so i'm gonna do that oh it's a special this is a destiny card and it says have an encounter with the player who has the most foreign colonies other than you in an event of a tie break the tie to your left yeah sullivan get it back oh no i'm coming after you no don't do that would anyone like to join me i would [ __ ] love to oh please [Applause] i'm going to put four ships towards this encounter all right what is the maximum i can contribute to this forum although i could i could use it to defend sally but why would you want to why would i do that well these are the two nicest people so i could pick either one and i'm not a bad person we're in the alliance phase which means so blair has put her four against sully's four so currently it's tied and uh sully's winning but uh as the attacker blair gets to offer alliances first and then yeah we can add up to four ships on the side if we are if we're successful as attackers allies we get a colony as well which is good one in salutopia however if anyone wants to join sully's doomed cause that's that's the that's a face that inspires military optimism um then you will not get a colony on sully's planet if you're successful but for every ship that you put in uh if your side wins you get that many extra cards from the deck and these are all good they're all exact you get your ships back [Music] but if you join my side we get to live on this planet which is the kissing planet it is the kissing so many wars fought over the kissing planet the mouth that launched the thousand ships look i'm all in well they're so much kissing well i've got four for someone who wants them me please oh wow whoa i want them more than blair okay well i'm i'm very open to offers who's who's likely to win blair are you feeling confident uh yeah i feel i feel pretty confident so first of all yeah i got some good cards attacking allies basically are you opening up attacking ally ship to everybody yeah yeah yeah i'm i'm in oh no oh tom 100. how confident are you feeling sully i'm feeling real ace real great real nice there's many ships in them yeah yeah oh yeah yeah yeah take them away you don't need these other two there's it's gonna be fine john we're gonna be we could it could be great you too tom and laurie we have a great time together we need you to join the war effort to do kisstopia it's poor kistopia gross um if i if i win with blair do i then are these four then stuck on kistopia yes but you um for future fights you have a mission for these guys future fights you can blow the conch and they'll come and join other fighters oh cool so i can why would they want to leave kistopia am i right heavily disinfected you can check out any time you like but you can never leave your mind is always in kisstopia well i'm with i'm with you blair oh no i have four of my little hats you'll always have a mono oh my gosh oh it's always oh no lorry knows which way the wind's blowing this does feel like bullying doesn't it okay at the moment we're doing okay yeah okay great great said a man for whom it was not great [Laughter] strolling into kistopia there's going to be some changes made around here now i know what you've heard don't worry it's a very small attacking force nothing we can't handle don't worry the entire the galaxy is ganged up against crystal everywhere we're a kiss loving peaceful people yeah we didn't bother training you to fight because you're such good kisses so i think you'll be fine on the horizon you can just hear that make kiss not war all right very good please yep yep all right make out here we go make out look what he's got it three two one negotiate yep brave folks have kissed token but yeah have you considered a kiss so for those watching at home um just because the first encounter uh blair had 11 ships plus 23 that's an incredible like it's an armada of 34. uh at which point sully's been like no thank you but because sully has played a negotiate uh for every ship he's about to lose four you get to take that many cards at random from blair's hands oh yeah nice oh yeah i'm taking them all yeah i'm only taking four one two three four your four ships have gone to the warp and then uh blair would you mind moving us all yes lovely to have you everyone this feels very uncomfortable now this many ships it was 30 what was it 34 against four no 34 against nothing because he negotiated just one what one a week stained white flag did that cold spread around the galaxy so quickly we all went to kistopia i think we might be the bad guys in this story the fall of kistopia will be remembered in the cosmic history books or sort of like the cosmic lads mags i guess chap lip sync ships death to kistopia we will kiss again we get a point yeah yeah everyone except for sully yes and you yeah cool all right yeah everyone else goes up one yay yeah well done peer pressured into it because everyone was on there okay well of course you're gonna do it at that point sorry mate when the whole galaxy says one person is wrong and bad and they must be destroyed it's fair enough oh this [ __ ] martyr over here um blair you had a successful first encounter first of all good job thank you um would you like a second encounter i mean yeah all right hell yeah hell blair you all heard that so said hell blur instead of hell yeah thank you thank you it's nice it's nice doing it in person when you can ask for this demand it with your intimidating presence blair has chosen her own color which means uh you can either attack uh an invading force on one of your planets or draw again because there's no one there [Laughter] this is johnny bollock's big planetarium planet uh why would why would the planet be a planetarium it's both planetary it's just looking at a mirror the planetarium planet tell us if you guys want in honestly i'm not feeling very confident about this one so you know if if you guys have some reinforcement cards that could potentially help out then then maybe we can do this i've got my eyes on that planetarium everyone looking through their telescopes and it just goes dark and is that all the allies are attacking me oh should i defend sally this does feel a bit cruel why would why would you defend him oh just because he's already lost so much i don't understand why would you [Laughter] why would you all right you know i've committed to blair uh hell blair as we say let's go i'm going to help you out too but thank you oh hey big spender mate one i got time i went on all this action me once hey adam you wanna i wanna help help a little little little old planetarium planet out give him health thank you so much excellent this doesn't make you look good this doesn't make you the good guy i see you all right next half of blair's hand i think he might have it three two one yeah what do we need uh we need how many are we at probably not many we have the same amount best card what the [ __ ] have you done to me how does it feel on the other side four ships over there hey we've got we've got we've got we've got four we've got four four yeah we've got eighteen what did you expect from sally have you watched the last year apart from blood on the clock tower when he inexplicably keeps winning every single week [Laughter] they're currently at 18. we are at uh 12. yeah nothing i can do at this stage i'm afraid well i tried congratulations see we bloody did it we bloody did it you gave him hell sully uh so all of those go into the war hold it right there because i think you're fired i am the zombie uh so this means this ludicrously overpowered card means i have the power of immortality i could never die which is why i'm going to be committing ships with gay abandon to every whenever you should lose ships to the war use this power instead to return any of them to your colonies and keep using them i will thanks zombie shadowy forms on a dark and murky world zombies prized all sources of energy they could flourish only by careful recycling of their own kind living on decomposed organic matter that's that's [ __ ] um they are poor the needless waste of war and have developed effective techniques to make sure their numbers will not be reduced which basically means yeah i can't die because i eat [ __ ] much like blair much like blair you're heaping help of [ __ ] then i guess so these come back to you they come right back to me apparently uh in addition you may free any player ships from the warp back to any colonies as part of the deal so i could give sally some ships back i can swear right yeah i'm gonna go and [ __ ] [ __ ] up i'm gonna i'm gonna swan around the galaxy killing everyone with impunity because i just get my ships back so uh very excited about that john's power is annoying but also it's nice because you don't really have to worry about him too much you know you know he's gonna be in the battle he's not going to die but he seems to just be kind of doing his own thing so i'm i'm not too worried about him i really wish i wasn't sat next to the zombies so i did uh four ships so i'll take one two three four very good doing business with you thank you very much adam i i abhor bullies i'm sure you all will be leaving because soon get adam does anyone are we good should we move on no yet [Laughter] his magic card scares me yeah oh my god oh no what is going on what does that mean i'm scared should i be scared okay what does it mean lurking in the depths of space-time beyond even the warp itself this mechanical race waits patiently for the heat death of the universe when it will rule over the strange abyss that remains in the meantime they subtly turn the races of the universe against each other to prevent them from discovering a way to prevent the unpreventable i am the tick tock and i have the power of patience whenever any player wins an encounter as the defense or a successful deal is made between any two players can use this power to discard one of these 10 tokens when all tokens are gone the universe itself has ended and the tick tock are the only thing that remains amidst the cosmic dust tom's character is the cold emotionless clock ticking away counting down to the moment where our own incompetence hangs us out to dry it is the most tom character that ever tommed tom's power is terrifying he has put a stop clock on the entire game we are the tick tock and we simply wait until the universe dies and then we move into the void that is left behind does anyone else have any terrifying reveals they'd like to make no no uh yeah so i just had an unsuccessful encounter so i'm no longer attacking and it moves on to me is that all blair's turn yep yeah my word but look look how much you did yeah yeah it's true so at least losing so you know yeah we're doing good everything everyone's having a great time can someone please turn over the card for me as i'm far away i only have tiny tiny arms yellow hey come on in baby how are you doing don't die [Laughter] but you'll want to die because the horrible tick tock that's true no hold on i don't want to i don't want to defend do i for the tick tock although i'm going to defend well well we have we have 10 tokens to play with jung there's plenty of time well before we do anything else i'd like to make a reveal oh no try i'm yes the bride has left a trail of broken circulatory pumps and legal hijinks across the cosmos and yet her allure is impossible to resist the bride however assures the social pressure of the present and rejects wallowing in the past to share just through space longing for a fantasy future with her true soul mate be it a low-life hate or a noble ethic and here we go it's um basically i have the power to marry god kistopia keep this is this is a kistopian ritual that i do not approve of dystopian as a main player before allies are invited you may use this power to marry your opponent i don't want to marry you oh i'm afraid that doesn't matter zombies do not consent i'm irresistible we literally eat feces oh now you're just don't talk dirty to me that player must choose one of his or her ships and place it on this sheet uh you may be married to one player only one player at a time uh you and your spouse may ally with each other without uh being invited and may show each other cards in your hands at any time should have done it for blair you're closer once per encounter you may use this card you may use this power to allow a trade of one card each from your hand in your spouse's hand you may divorce your spouse at any time please please do i file for divorce by turning that player's ship on your sheet upside down and taking uh half of the cards in his or her hand at random what as alimony in marriage now this sucks [ __ ] i wanna i wanna consume you so that i don't have to be married anymore you may not remarry a player when you have previously divorced but we're going by very traditional space rules if the sheet is lost or turned face down you must divorce your current spouse without receiving any alimony anyway there we go what the [ __ ] does all that mean it means wait so i can survive death but not marriage to sully oh you sound like a seventies comedian am i am i right [Laughter] i'm the bride i get to marry everyone because everyone wants to marry me because i'm irresistible it won't last nothing lasts except the tick tock uh right so you uh which planet would you like to attack uh oh that's my darling wife yes well this is your first act of matrimony is to attack me yes like any good marriage a good marriage is a good offense yeah yeah just to sort of really bring you down i know you're nagging me yeah i'm negan you yeah this is just a horrible version of the book the game oh no yeah that's what it is who wants to join in my horrible marriage yes hooray excellent oh i love a wedding who doesn't love it let me clear everyone i have a very angry series of zombies who will happily side with anyone who doesn't who doesn't pile on me at this stage uh okay so anyone no one can defend me because all of you scumbags have just jumped on i mean i'm the zombie i can't die i'm a mindless shit-eating horde it's not i am a husband you are not the only one i'm a family now oh look after me we're gonna have tourists in love i'm doing this for love my insane bride has married me against my wishes and is now killing me so what am i like oh brilliant but you know i could have brought so many of you back from the warp hey hey blair yes i could have i could have brought you back from the walk the next time i go and retrieve some ships i'm not gonna be doing that anymore we could have been immortal together before i would have but you piled on me didn't you you all piled on me and now you look ashamed of yourself now that you know i can't that's true okay uh feeling pretty good about this so uh i guess let's rumble yep okay let's tussle you ready actually hold on hold on just okay let's go three two one yeah so that makes sense yep awesome that's a big pile of [ __ ] that i got from sully so that's good if you don't die your ships go wherever you like okay well i think i'll but they can't stay here they can't say no you don't you don't have to you can't go home but you don't have to go home or stay married married life am i right it's a living not for me i'm immortal uh he's a terrible wife uh i want out but of course he's taking the kids he's taking all my little my little bacteria horrible zombie children with him uh i mean not literally but i'm angry and i both want to leave and also i'm stuck in a terrible relationship so i need to call my space lawyers so there's current scores um everyone who isn't sally and john has two foreign colonies uh starting john have one foreign each sully that was a successful encounter hooray love wind i'm so proud of you darling would you like a second encounter yes please yes you are going up against the tick tock [Music] um cards here we go one two three yes or so a lot of negotiation happens uh right so um the tick tock are removed from that planet wait using the spiff's flare card the wild power of the spiff as the defense when you lose an encounter you may leave one of your ships on the planet instead of sending it to the warp it co-exists with defensive ships oh god he's never going to be able to lose his alien power because he still has that planet now also we're all on this one planet we've got everyone in the galaxy on this one planet together that's nice so but if tom uh played if someone played a negotiation against tom they could potentially take that card from him right i mean he would never give that card but is it random that you take four random cards yeah yeah you can absolutely yeah if someone played negotiate card against him and got compensation absolutely negotiate with me let the defense succeed it's a small loss for a bigger victory we have to get that card away from him uh just in case um as well we haven't clarified um everyone has their alien powers we're seeing them emerge throughout the game uh if anyone loses three or more of their home system planets uh for example john has lost one uh sully has lost one uh if they lose three or more they lose their alien power which is it's a real way to kick someone when they're down uh right so sully those are your two successful encounters um we all move up uh one apart from tommy stays and there we go it doesn't carry on with me does it mean now it is the tick tock turn so do we do a little withdrawal from the warp thing at the end of a turn at the beginning of a turn so tom could i take one of my ships back please they always come back in the end could you please turn the destiny deck for me the tick tocks will be facing special um have a uh encounter with the player with most cards in hand in the case of a tie break to your left oh no one two three four five two thank god for that oh my goodness how many do you have could you pick a planet with two in it for me it would be my pleasure let's go first this one super duper uh right so uh tom how many ships are you sending on this doomed voyage to red spill in the usa you can't begin to comprehend the concept of doom okay i'm gonna send two and i'm inviting allies why only two tips i'm not a four ship kind of guy okay what does that mean it means i don't tend to send four ships i like to keep some reserved back of my planet you know you did spread them out right yes the difference between two and four in an encounter for me with good cards is negative enough that i'd rather keep backups tom wants to lose this well he benefits either way yeah he benefits either i think he wants to do bear in mind that five colonies is a faster way to victory than getting rid of tentacles that is true oh blair's gone away would anyone like i have not i have got one i thought you're just rinsing blair for putting they were like to defend yes when i helped and it gave me the cards which has doomed me beautiful okay yes would you like to honor i will honor that that alliance take my ships off of that and put them on put them next to yours i guess you're defending me wow now it's it's the honorable thing to do there is my card please place your card but wait over eons the clan of sorcerers studied the cosmic flow and learned to channel these tides to their own needs beginning with minor alterations in the probability patterns of matter they progress to transportation of objects over great distances undaunted by an occasional backlash of fate they even now are humming the incantations of mastery i have the power of magic as a main player after encounter cards are selected but before they're revealed you may use this power to switch the encounter holy [ __ ] with your opponent so that he or she reveals your card and you reveal theirs oh my god this game has space wizards balls now hang on a second so you uh so six against our five is that's 11. one two three four five six seven eight we're winning at the moment i mean it's no ships for me so i'm not that invested it does mean tick-tock looks for something first things first sully please take three cards from the deck is your little treat for coming to my aid so much that is wonderful yeah that's right walk away because i'm magic oh where did he go so that was an a failed encounter the defense won and god oh no right where are we going green hello laurel laurel i want to go for the one with two please a ultimately meaningless [Laughter] choice many ships are you hazarding this guy just came back from the warp maybe this guy just came back he's just just back from the wall really wanted to see it turn around boys give your son a quick hug and then off to the next one i'm going to go three for now can somebody make them look nice please delighted too how come how confident i'm pretty confident yeah but i will accept allies okay will you accept my ally ship before you ally with laurie i'm listening if laurie wins this lorry is up to four whoever wins this is now one encounter away from winning the game yeah that's true just keep that in mind adam and blair how you feeling i'm i'm out just in case how are you feeling as defender tubes i would say with some good numbers in with a decent shot all right it's not good enough for me i'm with you laurie thank you tom please feel free to move three of those reds over to your planet you little turncoat once again i thought you said you weren't involved i mean i i've decided to align myself with the uh a more enduring power don't let him intimidate you with his talk of eternity can i have my three of them of course but where sully where to also defend what you gutless look laurie is so close my bride you can let your husband talk to you like that i can't believe i'm not i can't believe i married you how many's on there uh six eight cowards eight cowards versus eight brave noble attacking ships oh no spawned on a totally liquid world amoebas are highly conscious of vibrations quick to withdraw from danger they are equally able to ooze menacingly into combat when confronted with the proper turbulences amoebas pity those who are less able to respond to circumstance and will be sensitive cosmic masters the purple rain begins okay so i am the amoeba which doesn't sound like much but actually can do quite a lot their ability is ooze you get to either put more little ships on things when you ooze or you can ooze away and be like i don't want to be involved in that i'm an amoeba i don't know what an amoeba's motivation is in a great galactic war but they're there oozing i might also play this what i want this to go through oh i'm going to play laser as a main player or ally during the alliance phase you may discard up to three cards from your hand select up to the same number of cards at random from any one player's hand that player must set those chosen cards aside and cannot use them until the end of the encounter wow so you can just see temporarily blind basically can block some of tom's cards oh sally we've made a terrible choice this is awful so i will discard these three cards all right um so tom uh you you've discarded three so tom at random you have to take three cards from your hand and set them as oh he's not got many cards yeah can i have two off the left and then the one on the i want that one in the middle so i don't see any of tom's cards yep gosh you can see the facade of the grandfather clock slowly cracking little mirror fracture come on laurie lubricate my gears let's see what happens so that is now eight versus ten okay you ready three two one oh don't worry about us tom yeah no worries i've actually been i've heard the warps lovely this time of year you [ __ ] bastard yeah i thought that would be a great movie you're trying to help out the tick tock i'm trying to help out the game blair i'm ultimately just i'm looking out for myself here yeah by the time laurie had had the potential to ooze and with some cards out of my deck negotiates the only thing i'm gonna get anything out of you [ __ ] toaster i cannot express this enough your entire lifespan the lifespan of your children your children's children what a drag is so this is pretty important now the scores as they stand uh tom and sully are happy to be here with two foreign colonies me and uh me and john are in it but not looking super healthy with three foreign colonies one foreign colony away from victory blair and laurie if blair or laurie get one more foreign colony they will win instantly so now is the time to be careful who you invite to be your allies um lori that was your success successful encounter oh yeah i get to do it again yeah please thanks wild have an encounter with any other player of your choice oh attack adam nice you're going to take me yeah good good which which planet would you like to one of these two is these little tufas pierce all right not red town usa no this one was red town this one is adam another great bit of improv pun that was red tennis big big planet can i have two from that planet there please thank you are you inviting anyone to be your allies yes please feel free not blair uh well [Music] i really want to join in and i'm going to use my alien power which is the parasite [Applause] it's the one from the box evolving late on their almost totally polluted world the parasites had to depend on the already dominant life forms for survival but so rapidly did they sorry let me say that again but so rapidly did they succeed in infesting their home planets they now need unsuspecting hosts to carry them throughout the far reaches of space oh [ __ ] uh so basically i'm the parasite i have the power to infest meaning unless specifically prevented by another game effect when it is your turn to ally you may use the power to ally with one side and an encounter as if you had been invited even when you were not so i'm on four points right now i have four colonies all i need is just one more and with my power like i don't think i can lose you know i'm just going to keep doing this i'm going to keep latching on to people get that fifth one blair's power is very blair she's your friend whether you want her to be or not i like blair that's mean so like i know you want to win this but i also want to win this so like why not just go in together we can be buds you know the only thing less than laurie winning is a duel victory yeah that's nothing thank you i'm with adam shared victories of [ __ ] yeah [Music] i'd quite like blair to win but not both of them come on at what cost yeah exactly think of lori's face for the next year oh we can't have lori winning his first ever game of cosmic it's like so easily as well oh invading your planet i thought i'd sing the most horrifying thing this game had to offer but no not the eternal tick tock not weird space bride the toad hat on laurie's on the amoeba's head um i would like alliances um and based on what laurie plays i think we've got this in the back okay i mean yes based on what lorry plays yeah yeah because yeah gold sorcerer power this is like the end of two rooms in a boom where it's either this or this and that will determine who wins the game how are you feeling lauren how are your cards looking yeah good yeah good good he's got two they're still your cards they're great how many cards do you have larry but now we're in a horrible i've got two cards okay so they're not going to be good aren't they if he's got two can you put my three from your uh planet tubes can you yes and here's four from mine there is my card [ __ ] there is my card and now we play the bluffing game so he's only got two cards and he did fight tom last round suggesting he would have used his big guns there so the chance of him having another big gun adam adam don't switch you know what you have adam adam what are you doing you're crazy you're interested we'll have to film another game if you lose here it is a great game though john it is good i would like to happily play another round yeah no i would have a legal another round as well this is a phenomenal game but i'd quite like to win okay i'll leave him i'll leave them i'm one colony away from winning i'm going to ooze all of my ships as many ships as i can spare from all of my other colonies into this attack plan because then i'm gonna pick up the win it's amoebas all the way baby this is tactically terrible because if this goes badly i'm [ __ ] but why not hail mary so we got one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven versus fourteen i'm ready three two one that's a lot of dead he fell for the trap suck it lorry i have just smacked the [ __ ] out of lorry basically uh he put all of his forces into one uh huge attack into me and i i i spanked his little bottom and now he is absolutely boned oh i am boned i am boned so hard i uh oh i lost a lot in the warp of the old ooze the thing about amoebas is you just need one one little guy and i was gonna start building up my forces getting them back and maybe i could win maybe would you like to to do the honors oh yes there's always a greater threat isn't there be it blair or tom doesn't count doesn't count i have to do it again now all right failed encounter there from laurie swords uh it's your girl john excellent um all right i will draw and it's perfect what the [ __ ] kick him when he's down get him in the kitchen holy [ __ ] lorry your issue is though if blair gloms on she wins the game yeah don't get him hey blair hey blair huh cosmic zap baby get off my [ __ ] back [Laughter] to clarify the cosmic zap means that yes blair cannot use it stops a power for one entire encounter blair has no power black cannot glom onto this fight i just i just don't get why they don't want to be my friend i like i i honestly i don't get it have a brain leech it's fine it's fun everyone loves it uh lori i'm i'm helping you out you are okay wow this is stupid i'm not even the parasites with you not even someone's gonna leech off you his brand's dead let's just take that this is just this is just poison to us okay uh all
