hey everyone and welcome back to royalty now studios my name is becca and i reimagine famous figures from the past as modern-day people i share some history about each of my subjects what they may have looked like and then share my recreations which i think helped make the figures feel more relatable to us today today's subject is leonardo da vinci whose looks are actually a bit more mysterious than you might have originally guessed first off if you like the video make sure to like and subscribe if you're interested in more content that brings history to life also follow me on instagram at royalty underscore now underscore to check out the new images and reels of new subjects that i post every two weeks i do have one leonardo da vinci video already available on the channel but that one is kind of more of a photoshop process and not really the history behind it so check that one out if you're interested in more of the making of in this video i'll talk through why da vinci is such a fascinating figure of history what he may have looked like and the portraits we have of him today and then of course reveal my modern day recreations of him at the end research sources are included in the description let's go ahead and get started [Music] so leonardo lived from 1452-1519 he was the illegitimate son of a notary and a peasant girl classic love story right there he was born near the northern italian town of vinci from where he gets his name leonardo was an apprentice to andrea del verracchio at his studio in florence where he learned the crafts of sculpture painting and goldsmithing experts have analyzed famous paintings by veracios to see if they can find the hand of a young leonardo da vinci in them it's actually believed that the leftmost angel figure in the baptism of christ by verracchio could have been one of da vinci's earliest paintings and it's such a great example of his early work and you can see the skill that was brought to this one angel varakio was apparently devastated by this and he thought the angel was far better than any of the figures that he had created was really upset that his young student had upstaged him da vinci simply blows me away because of his sheer depth of talent he had such an intense curiosity for the world around him and it was in his own florentine workshop that he made extensive notes about the world around him including drawing birds in flight he spent hours drawing plants and extracting oils rosemary oil for instance was used to give his paintings a hazy effect so he did botany as well you know so many of us know him as da vinci the artist but he was also da vinci the scientist da vinci the inventor da vinci the musician da vinci the engineer and so on i just truly feel like he is one of the most staggering geniuses in recorded human history leonardo once said simplicity is the ultimate sophistication he was definitely a pioneer of what we now think of as user experience he would steadfastly apply the scientific method to each aspect of his work we also know from accounts about his life that he had a jovial personality he was really conscientious of the people in his life the people around him and he had an immense love for animals so not only was he this genius but he also was probably a pretty great guy an interesting fact about his lasting legacy is that da vinci only has 25 major works that scholars have confirmed were painted by him and obviously he did so many other things and this this was due to his penchant for leaving projects unfinished he was always distracted by a new hobby a different interest going as far as for scholars today to tell tell people that he had adhd which may or may not be true but he was just so curious about so many things and so it's funny that we only have 25 works that we can attribute to him it's also assumed that many works have been lost throughout the years so in 2017 salvatore mundi attributed in whole or part to leonardo was sold at auction for 450 million which set a record for the most expensive painting ever sold at a public auction that is a lot about his mortal legacy that we talk about today but let's talk about his mortal form his appearance there are many portraits of da vinci that circulate today but which ones are accurate so there's a lot that are kind of they depict this young da vinci they look kind of consistent with each other showing this flowing hair a strong bony nose these inquisitive eyes but there are only really a few confirmed images of leonardo that exists for us today and they're all sketched when he was in his mid-60s i've worked from the presumed self-portrait of leonardo that he took of himself in red chalk and most scholars agree that this is him there are still some that don't agree i did think it was probably safe to use this as a likeness of him and establishing provenance for these images just proves extremely difficult so we really don't have an image of young leonardo anywhere that's been confirmed there's also a confirmed side profile by francesco meltze and there's also another that has come into the news in recent years that may be authentic thought to have been sketched by an assistant shortly before his death and this one looks consistent with the others that have been confirmed we also don't really have any information on his skin or eye color although his hair may have been kind of a medium brown or reddish in his youth based on some unconfirmed portraits we also know that he was quite physically strong and he cared very much about having a meticulously well-groomed appearance we also may have a glimpse of a very young leonardo who it suggested was maybe used as a model for verracchio statue of david so leonardo came into verrakio's workshop to work as an apprentice between 13 and 15 years old and it is thought that maybe varakio used him as a model for this david some scholars would also even argue that there are secret self-portraits hidden among his works alright so the time is now let's go ahead and take a look at the way that leonardo da vinci could have looked in the modern day based on his self-portrait sketch [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] another thing to note is that he may have had blue eyes given that he was likely lighter-haired and from northern section of italy so let's check out a blue-eyed version as well [Music] [Music] and then i also did some fun quick ones of a possible younger da vinci and a little da vinci with glasses i thought these were just fun so don't judge the artistry on these too harshly [Music] so everyone what do you think of the possible leonardo da vinci likenesses presented here today i actually have prints and bookmarks of this work available on my etsy store the link is in the description make sure you put your suggestions for figures you'd like to see in the future in the comments below and i'm excited to say that i think next week on the instagram and youtube in a few weeks we will be doing our special halloween post of vlad the impaler who is someone that a lot of people have been wanting to see thank you so much for watching and i'll see you for the next subject [Music] you
