[Music] so [Music] hello and welcome to hallow's pray 40 lenten challenge my name is jonathan rumi and i have the privilege of playing jesus in the tv series the chosen in this pray 40 challenge we'll also be joined by jim caviezel the actor who played jesus in the film the passion of the christ it's a great honor for us to walk through these 40 days of prayer with you the theme for our pray 40 challenge this year is the seven last words of christ in the final hours of jesus's life he spoke seven words or sayings as he hung upon the cross each week of this challenge we'll meditate on one of those last seven words using scripture writings from the church and the saints litanies psalms and music we'll especially draw from venerable archbishop fulton sheen's book on the last seven words he begins the book with quote three elements conspire in the making of every great message a pulpit an audience and a truth these three were present in the two most notable messages in the life of our blessed savior the first and the last which he delivered to mankind the pulpit of his first message was the mountainside his audience unlettered galileans his truth the beatitudes the pulpit of his last message was the cross the audience saints and sinners the sermon was the seven last words in the four thousand years of jewish history the dying words of only three are recorded israel moses and stephen in his goodness our blessed lord has left us his thoughts on dying for he more than israel more than moses more than stephen is representative in all humanity in this sublime hour therefore he calls all his children to the pulpit of the cross and every word he says to them is set down for the purpose of an eternal publication and an undying consolation there was never a preacher like the dying christ there was never a congregation like that which gathered about the pulpit of the cross there was never a sermon like the seven last words [Music] over these next few days we'll begin by focusing on the first of jesus's last words father forgive them for they know not what they do when jesus is lifted up on the cross during his crucifixion he looks upon the soldiers who have scourged and crucified him he looks upon the elders who have arranged for his execution and he looks upon the people who called for his death shouting crucify him crucify him [Music] but jesus in his incredible mercy raises his eyes to heaven and says forgive them they know not what they do we begin this season of lent with ash wednesday a day of humility that reminds us that we are dust and to dust we shall return a day that reminds us that we must repent and believe in the gospel a day that reminds us of our need for god's forgiveness just as christ pleaded for us on the cross [Music] so we begin this day of humility and our meditations on this first word by praying with the litany of humility this is a powerful and challenging prayer that reminds us of our need to grow in humility and our reliance on god for his forgiveness and grace i will lead us through a series of petitions and you will respond with a repeated prayer [Music] before we begin let's take a moment first to settle our hearts and minds if you'd like i invite you to take a deep breath in [Music] and a deep breath out [Music] again deep breath in and deep breath out we'll begin our prayer now with the sign of the cross [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit oh jesus meek and humble of heart hear me [Music] after i say each petition respond either out loud or in your heart with deliver me jesus from the desire of being esteemed deliver me jesus [Music] from the desire of being loved deliver me jesus from the desire of being extolled deliver me jesus [Music] from the desire of being honored from the desire of being praised from the desire of being preferred to others from the desire of being consulted from the desire of being approved from the fear of being humiliated from the fear of being despised from the fear of suffering rebukes from the fear of being colombiated from the fear of being forgotten from the fear of being ridiculed from the fear of being wronged from the fear of being suspected now our response will be jesus grant me the grace to desire it that others may be loved more than i jesus grant me the grace to desire it that others may be esteemed more than i jesus grant me the grace to desire it that in the opinion of the world others may increase and i may decrease jesus grant me the grace to desire it that others may be chosen and i set aside that others may be praised and i unnoticed [Music] that others may be preferred to me in everything that others may become holier than i provided that i may become as holy as i should jesus grant me the grace to desire it we'll take some time now to reflect was there a particular line that stood out to you hold the line in your mind for the next few moments don't worry if you get distracted just gently bring your mind back to that line [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] let's pray this litany together one more time oh jesus meek and humble of heart hear me from the desire of being esteemed deliver me jesus from the desire of being loved deliver me jesus from the desire of being extolled deliver me jesus from the desire of being honored from the desire of being praised from the desire of being preferred to others from the desire of being consulted from the desire of being approved from the fear of being humiliated from the fear of being despised from the fear of suffering rebukes from the fear of being colombiated from the fear of being forgotten [Music] from the fear of being ridiculed [Music] from the fear of being wronged from the fear of being suspected [Music] now our response will be jesus grant me the grace to desire it that others may be loved more than i jesus grant me the grace to desire it that others may be esteemed more than i jesus grant me the grace to desire it that in the opinion of the world others may increase and i may decrease jesus grant me the grace to desire it that others may be chosen and i set aside that others may be praised and i unnoticed that others may be preferred to me in everything that others may become holier than i provided that i may become as holy as i should jesus grant me the grace to desire it [Music] talk with god now how might he be speaking to you through this prayer today [Music] [Music] [Music] so take a moment now simply to rest in god's presence and mercy hear jesus's words to the father on your behalf father forgive them [Music] so to conclude we'll pray the first prayer that jesus taught us let's pray together our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil amen in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen thank you
