[Music] hey you guys today i'm gonna be talking about how i draw anatomy as a disclaimer i'd like to say that this is overly simplified because what i know about human anatomy is down to its absolute basics so this isn't fully accurate if you really want to go more in depth with this topic and fully understand all the works on the human body and the best way to draw it i highly recommend watching videos by proco i'm gonna link his channel on the description on this one but if you're looking for maybe a different perspective on the topic this is how i go about it in my head and i hope it will help you guys too so basically what i know about the human body is down to the level of a doll so that's how i draw it i'm gonna be breaking down the parts before i give you guys any examples because this is really important first i start off with an oval for the head and then i draw a circle for the neck and two more circles to represent the shoulders this is incredibly important to me that these joints are drawn as balls or as circles because it makes it very clear in my head that these are the places where the range in motion for each body part starts and then i draw this kind of like a cereal box shape for the chest and the upper torso and then i draw this an upside down pentagon to represent the pelvis but really how i think about it in my head is that i'm drawing underwear and there's no easier way for me to explain how i draw the pelvis and then i just draw a little tube to represent the spine so i can connect it to the pelvis the thighs and the calves are really just these tubes again the calves maybe taper down more than the thighs and again these are connected by circles or balls to represent the joints even down to the ankles where they are connected to the feet so the arms are just basically a repeat of the legs they're tubes that are connected by the joints which i draw as circles again or as these spheres the hands i draw as trapezoids usually but i'll go more into detail about the hands later so the concept for this whole thing is that the body parts only move where they are connected by the joints or to the spine there's so many nuances to this so many details about actual human anatomy that i'm missing but really for most of the time when i'm drawing this is all that i work with it's very important that these are all three-dimensional shapes so they'll be changing depending on where the viewer is looking at them from so now we're baking down some of these parts starting off with the head i start off with a circle and then i just bring it down to a taper until they meet at the bottom to represent everything down to the lower jaw bone also something that's very important to note about the head is that the side of the head is a little flatter than the rest so it's not brown all the way around so i just put a cross over there so it's easier for me to spot that this is a flatter surface and that then makes it easier for me to place where that surface is in the photo depending on the reference photo too you'll see more or less of that cross but it's still good to know where it is because that's where the ears sit also it gives you a better idea as to the angle where the head is pointing to be moving on to the torso usually this looks something like like i said a cereal box maybe a little pointier on the chest but that's just so it can show me where the chest is facing the hips i have said before is like drawing underwear i feel like it's important to do that so i can then clearly see the hollow where the joint is connected to the legs because you'll see more of that hollow if they're sitting down and facing towards you and then less of it if the angles are somewhat facing down towards the model and then the arms and legs are pretty straightforward they're just tubes the lower ones of the two will taper down more than the ones on top and then we're moving on to the hands they're really just these trapezoids with this other shape that extends over to the side to represent the thumb muscle this is absolutely important that these two are connected but they're not one shape because the muscle for the thumb is very mobile and it's mostly independent from the rest of the palm and then the fingers i just clamped together like if they were wearing mittens at the top of the palm you can draw four circles in if you want to know where to start placing the fingers and if you're someone who has trouble with having space for all of them i can't really go into more details about the hands because it's a very comp complex body part and it's gonna take up most of the video if i do do that but essentially this is it this is what i do for the hands that's all i need for my drawings the feet are really just as complicated as the hands in reality too but i draw them as this long shape i just really want to make sure that there's a circle to represent the heels and and the balls of the feet these are really important because this is where the feet are most mobile when we walk other than of course on the angles all right so enough of that now we're just going to be moving on to the examples this first reference photo i think is good practice there's a nice white balls in there and you can see a lot of his body so we're gonna go with this first the first thing i do is make out the overall shape of the subject this is good because it helps me place it better on the page and the way i do that is i imagine that there are lines that are connected around the outermost points of the model we're gonna be start off with the head and since his is tilted more to the side you see more of that flat side of the head so then i make sure that i draw that cross in there the next thing i do is pinpoint where the shoulders are and i just look at where they are placed next to the head i think that's a good reference point then having the shoulders first also makes it easier to draw the chest because he's placing slightly away from us then we'll see more of that side of the boxy shape that i drew for his chest and then i just draw the elbows first so it's easier for me to draw the hands i feel like drawing the joints first really helps me place the limbs easier because because they're just easier to pinpoint i just use the other body parts when i'm drawing them as a point of reference like his leg joint is somewhere down from his right elbow and then his knee isn't too far away from under his pelvis so again his wrist is closer to his face and his left ankle is also close to his right knee so basically that's it for the doll level on this one now i'm just gonna be going into more detail on there with my green pen just so you guys can clearly see it and separate it from the first stage of my drawing i honestly think it's good to practice with code models because then you'll learn a lot about how clothes drape on the body but if you want to really focus on the human body definitely just go ahead and go and try nude models first now i'm just gonna go in there finish this whole thing off with my highlighters and my gel pen just so you guys can see how i actually finished my sketches like this one all right so now we're going to be looking for another reference photo this one looks very scary but let's just try this out and see it looks like it could be a challenge but we'll see if it works so with the same process applied so we start off the same way with the outer most points again but this time we are going to be starting off with the shoulders because they're the most prominent parts in this photo the way they their pose they're the ones that you can clearly see now because i know that she's pointing it towards me i'm gonna be drawing more of that top part of the cereal box for her chest too i'll also see more of that right shoulder because it's closer towards me than the left one and i make sure that the chest is curved up because her back is arched and then i just draw her neck and her head making sure i show more of that flat side of her head because it's turned slightly away from me her left elbow is interesting on this one because you can't really see it but because i can see her lower arm fully then i just know that that's also where her elbow starts and then because the upper arm is mostly pointed straight towards the viewer so that just means we don't see most of it at all the pelvis is also gonna be an interesting shape for this one because you don't see any of the leg holes at all where her joints are connected to her pelvis because it's pointed all the way away from us but i do know that the left one is closer to her hand so that's also a good guide the same goes for the right knee i use the left one as a guide i imagine that there is a line going from one to the other and i try to picture the negative space between them to figure out where to place the knee on my drawing and then the foot just goes straight down and she's on her tiptoe so we'll see more of her heel and we also see that the balls of her feet are where she's touching the ground too again i'm just gonna go ahead with my green pen on this one so i can fill her out more since she's not really super skinny or plus size it's easier to do this step so i'm just going to focus more on the folds of your clothes and where the creases meet those kinds of details really just bring the drawing together then i'm just going in with my highlighter to add more depth to the shading and my gel pen to finish it off i was going to finish this video right here but i realized that i don't have any examples for plus size models so i added this one in there this is more complicated because weight will distribute differently for every person so you really just gotta study your reference photo really well if you're drawing different body types generally the curves are softer so you want to make sure your lines aren't stiff and there are folds too you just really need to know where they are placed on the body because again yeah these things are different for everyone [Music] then i just finished this off like i did the other two but that's it for the video i really hope this helped you guys even just a little bit for the next video i'm gonna be doing a detailed watercolor painting tutorial so stay tuned if you're into that thank you guys for watching and i'll see you again soon you
