first we need to master the basics see what i mean just like that these are the secrets to life you guys i don't even know what's your name john pedro john and pedro okay okay you guys filming yep so we have john and pedro here we're gonna teach these guys how to slide today and uh we're gonna teach all of you as well cover all the basics and then work our way up to some more advanced slides so what's your experience level with sliding job the only thing i'm familiar with is doing it on snowboard oh yeah okay so if you're a snowboarder that's going to help you because you have to do a lot of counter rotation with your shoulders and snowboarding right and that directly crosses over into into longboarding and then for you pedro like and i've done a couple slides on skateboards longboards or shortboards but yeah i'm not really knowing what i'm doing though cool we're gonna definitely make sure you guys know exactly what you're doing at the end of the day it's gonna be awesome yeah start with glove slides there's one thing i'd want to go over it's just how to have a correct body position throw your boards up on the grass just so that you're not going to roll away you want to have your front foot directly behind the front truck for my board i would just look at the micro drop because my board's designed specifically to have that as a reference but if you don't have a micro drop like on that totem there you can just use the bolts and then your back foot finds where it feels the most comfortable and that's where your back foot is going to go in order to be able to balance properly on your board you need to have a good range of motion so just be really relaxed remember to bend your knees don't be nervous if you're nervous you'll probably be stiff so like a push-up slide do you just put your hands on the ground and just end up in like a push-up position literally put your hands on the ground and then just extend your legs out [Music] a lot of people when they're learning how to slide they'll think you know you need to go pretty fast in order to slide especially if you see it in a lot of the videos but in reality as long as you have a good technique you hardly need any speed you guys come down even a little bit more and start down lower a lot of the time people end up going so fast that they're actually kind of starting to get scared and then if you're getting scared then you're gonna forget what you need to do just keep it at a speed that you're comfortable and don't really try to push past those boundaries yet are you guys regular or goofy goofy both goofy oh all right i'm gonna have to ride ride goofy today there's something called a pre-card have you ever like literally just turned so hard that you can feel your wheels starting to scrub so that's why you do pre-carve and then once your wheels are turning so hard that they're wanting to slide out on their own all you have to do is just push just a tiny bit and boom you're sliding for the push-up slide though you don't really need to worry about the pre-carve because when you put your hands on the ground in front of your board that alone is gonna shift your body weight enough that you're gonna be turning that'll put enough weight on your toes that you'll be able to pre-carve just automatically don't overthink it just make sure you keep your weight on your front foot at all times that's the golden rule so we're going first put both hands on the ground [Music] oh man look at that that was pretty good all right joe let's see how this goes man you got this keep your weight on your front foot put both hands on the ground and just do push-up basically in the nice wide open area there feeling all right i'm good that's good i got a big bracket awesome yeah that was probably a good move wearing the jacket that's another thing we talked about the other day protective gear you could even just have a nice long sleeve jacket like john and that's going to really help you avoid a lot of minor injuries for you pedro i noticed like your fingers were contacting the ground but i don't know if your slide pucks even touch the ground i don't know either i don't think they did it's the first time i i wear these gloves nice nice definitely a strange feeling to get used to you know you actually have to teach yourself how to use the gloves properly it doesn't come naturally that's why you've got the nice plastic puck that keeps your hands safe there's nothing really wrong with getting a feel for the ground a little bit you did something that i've seen a lot of people do you're hesitating to actually put your body weight on your hands trust your slide puck put a lot of body weight on your hands this time oh yeah i heard the slide pucks that time that sound i'm not even gonna try to imitate it it's hard to avoid it's really hard like you know my gloves it's the same thing like this is after like a year almost my fingers are starting to come through you physically have to teach yourself how to keep your fingers off the ground put your hands down right away yeah that was good because that time you put your hands down right away instead of waiting and that's why this time was better for you john you almost just put so much weight on your hands it's almost like you just collapsed and that's some good commitment for sure keep your arms really strong so that you can actually support your body weight you really have to brace yourself when you put your hands on the ground you have to keep your whole entire core strong and all your upper body muscles need to be working other than that i'd say you should probably give it another go man see how it goes watch out for the board maybe john when your hands are hitting the ground your hands are kind of staying where they are but the board wants to keep going try to put your hands slightly in front of the board and then let's see how that goes i think i have a feeling i know what's going on this is another really common problem with a lot of people that are just starting out you're trying so hard to make the slide happen that it's almost like you're twisting and you don't need to twist your body to make your board turn just by having your weight on one side you're already going to be turning if you try to make the board turn by twisting your body that's going to just throw everything off balance you want to try to keep your body centered with your board put your hands down as far forward as you can and just extend your legs all right i'm gonna get my board [Music] oh yeah that was perfect yeah nice one john okay so you guys have the push-up slide mastered just taking another few feet up the hill and then do the exact same way oh yeah oh yeah that was the best one yet the next thing to do would be to learn heel side note unlike a toe side you can't really put both hands on the ground you'd be using your right hand for goofy and for regular riders you'd be using your left hand it's just gonna be like before where once you put your hand on the ground you're leaning so far away from your board that you're gonna be turning so don't even think about turning don't even try to turn as soon as i put my hand on the ground see what happens like my board leans so much and as soon as you put your hand on the ground just kick your back leg out body position put your hand on the ground and kick your back lego those are the three things you need to remember you don't need much speed watch this start from down low you guys so let's see if you feel more comfortable grabbing rail then grab rail yeah oh nice grabbing rail is when you grab your board while you're sliding this is your rail here on both sides if your foot tried to slip off your board having your hand on the rail would prevent that from happening and not only that but it helps you stay low and it helps keep your body weight forward however you feel works better for you john that's how you should do it let's see if you got this first try [Applause] came right out when you grab your board you actually pulled up on your board that is an extremely common mistake so you don't actually want to pull up on the board at all your hand is just there just to act as like a brace what am i supposed to do with my hand well can you just grab rail if it feels more comfortable so this time maybe try it without grabbing the board at all see how he does it sometimes it helps not to grab rail because grabbing rail will limit your ability to actually initiate the slide because you can't really extend your leg fully because your hand is in the way once you put your hand on the ground you're gonna be leaning away from your board and then once you're already turning then it's that much easier to just give a little push and your wheels will be sliding you're just going to turn all the way around that pylon over there with your hand on the ground the whole time no sliding so like this get the hand on the ground forward oh look at that damn bro full full slide you just did it and you weren't even trying oh i wasn't expecting that like if you seriously are going so fast and you make a turn that's so tight your wheels are just gonna lose traction that's another reason why the pre-carve is so important so i have some really good advice for john your back knee was kind of upright like this whereas you actually want your back knee to be down on the board like this having your back knee all the way down to the board is going to trick your body into leaning more onto your front foot imagine that there's a line in between those two axle nuts when you're putting your hands on the ground put your hand as far in front of that line as possible for a push-up slide it would kind of be something like this so now see how that feels like this you can get farther than that see look where the line is see right here your hands like this far in front of the line you should be like this far so maybe come a little closer yeah like that always remember that keep your hand in front of the imaginary laser line sometimes when you put your hand down on the ground what might tend to happen is your hand will get stuck where it is but your board will keep going and then you end up getting pulled off your board that's why you want to put your hand as far forward as possible we're doing stand-up slides we're really really going to focus on pre-carving now though another golden rule this is a big one wherever your shoulders go that's where your feet are going to want to go your feet are always going to have a tendency to follow your shoulder boom 180. we'll start with 180s if you're goofy you're going to do a slight left turn you're going to switch directions and you're going to start turning right and then you're going to hold that right turn until finally you're going gonna throw your shoulders out and you're gonna initiate that slide show you what that looks like so left and then right and then all the basic stuff still applies like the body position make sure you keep your knees bent and keep your weight on your front foot and other than that you just have to follow that same pre-carve with your weight on your front foot you're going to start by just swinging your shoulders your hips will follow and then immediately after that you kick your foot out this is all one motion the main thing is hold that right turn as long as possible really good exercise so just look down at your feet and remember where they are my left foot is going to end up where my right foot is so you're going to end up like this you want to try to like keep your feet contacting the ground as much as possible and just really just de-weight your body and just like this if you go down a little lower and jump a little more once i jump i bring my knees up to my chest and that prevents the weight from going back down onto my feet and then once you're done start bringing your knees back up to your chest it'll delay your body weight from going back down onto your feet the same moment that you start doing your d weight is the same moment you start twisting your shoulders by the time your shoulders past the straight point where they're matching with your board that's the time that you should be finished doing your d weight that's the time that you should kick the slide up because that's when you have the least amount of weight on your wheels so that's when it's easiest for your wheels to slide all the way around yeah it's a little tricky sometimes to get the timing right if you try to initiate the slide too early then you're actually going to be pushing your wheels into the ground so you have to wait until you're done pushing down and then kick out the slide you hardly get any speed the most important thing is that you get a nice pre-card right before you went to kick out you went like this you put all your weight on your back foot did you notice that did you see it too yeah yeah when you start your pre-carve really your shoulders like bring them back a whole bunch and get ready to do a full twist all the way around so see how he was just turning turning turning held the turn got ready still holding the turn and then drew just kick that back leg up i know you can do it right before you kick out your slide just remember to stay on your front foot send it yeah front foot front foot oh yeah we've only been at this for what half an hour you're already doing straight up stand up slide it's taken me weeks sometimes to get to this point not even kidding man just keep practicing and for you you can probably try like adding in a tiny bit of speed once you start initiating the slide all the fear goes away if you're leaning away from your board too much when you do the slide you're gonna land your slide but you're still gonna be leaning away from the board a little bit once the 180 is complete you're standing right on top of your board if you have a drop through board or something like this just put your foot as far forward as you can in your case you had your foot back about here so you're already starting out with your weight closer to your back wheels than they are to your front wheels that could be why your wheels are sticking to the ground so much so i'm gonna take my shoes off here i'm gonna show you where i put my feet when i do a heel side but when i kick out a slide i like to put the rail of my board right in this nice part of my heel right here and i have so much to push off of my grip tape's not going to do everything for me it takes a little getting used to but it'll work much better for you guys so give that a shot and see how it feels those sides are fun toe sides are fun toe sides your front foot is going to still be the same but your back foot is going to be a little different instead of hanging your heel off the edge to kick it out like that you're going to use the other edge and a lot of people will tend to have their foot straight like this it's actually better to point your foot forward like this start out by turning right switch directions and then hold that left pre-carve we're gonna rotate your shoulders and then your hips will follow your shoulders and your feet will follow your hips and boom put your back foot so that your toes are on the edge like this and then utilize the muscles in your back to push your board you want to be utilizing all these muscles here to really pull the board back this way so i'm going to turn right and then i'm going to switch directions after and i'm going to hold it when you do a 180 what's going to happen is you're going to lose sight of where you're going don't let that psych you out look at this open space you're not gonna hit anything find a nice open area to practice this where you know like even if you're not looking where you're going there's nothing for you to like collide with really really lean into it too all right man we got the toe side damn both of you guys had your back foot placed like this don't forget to really try to point your back foot forward like this those sides are fun you almost want to push from underneath push the board sideways like this [Music] when you're trying to do a check slide instead of a 180 once you get those back wheels to slide you've got your first step down and then to complete your check slide you need to take your front wheels and slide them forwards so your board matches up again the best way to do that is in your case it would be your right hand reach to the sky literally try to grab the bridge when you want to take your front foot and slide it forwards take the bridge and pull it into your chest you start out with your shoulders going the same way as your feet when you bring your shoulders in your feet will go the opposite way so like this like you see what i mean and for regular riders you'd reach out with your left hand to progress basically from doing 180s into actually doing check slides is you need to figure out how to slide all four wheels simultaneously the best way to learn how to do that is to do really long pre-carves and try to actually just hold out your 180s a little bit the slide just blends into the turn see that so just turn in real slow see that you can really use that for checks and 180s you did a slide so for the check you'd reach up to the sky for the 180 you keep your shoulders tucked in you see how the pre-carve was the same the only difference was what i was doing with my shoulders that's the golden rule your feet will always follow your shoulders one thing i really want to mention too if you're going to do your 180 you're going to find yourself riding in switch so you have to learn how to ride switch when you do a 180 you have a new front foot your back foot becomes your front foot so now you have to lean on your new front everything's the same it's just flipped check it out [Music] the heel side checks your shoulders actually come back for goofy riders your left hand will reach backwards towards the top of the hill you need to physically try to grab the top of the hill you hold your shoulders back until you're ready to finish your check and then as soon as you decide that you want to finish your check slide that's when you take your hand you whip it into your shoulder just like that i'll try to really exaggerate it on this one just like that you kick out with your back foot and then you finish the check slide by sliding your front foot forward to meet up with your back wheels so in a slow speed it would look like this instead of like this and then that watch for the pre-carve too oh little blood slide you see the tiny blunt slide guff we had a great day i think we covered everything we did heel side glove down toe side glove down stand up 180 toe side stand up 180 heel side stand up chest toe side heel side touched on switch riding we talked about the golden rules like always lean on your front foot and your hips will follow your shoulders and your feet will follow your hips yeah i think these guys really learned a lot today and you're not going to learn everything in one day i think we've laid down enough fundamentals that you can take these lessons and apply them to any type of sliding at any speed on any board hopefully we covered everything today if we didn't miss anything once again let us know in the comments below let us know down below yeah all right i'm gonna do some sliding [Music] yeah this is always a good thing to see you know if we weren't longboarding today we would have never been on this road and we would have never seen that caterpillar now that we're out here we've got a good excuse to stand here on a road for five hours long boarding will really open up new possibilities in your life like caterpillars caterpillars are a good possibility
