[Music] hi my name is fluffy pacifier and today we're going to play with half rectangle triangles I'm a fabric designer actually we get a chance to play with some of my fabric today so I'm very excited and I also design patterns I co-founded the modern quilt guild and I love to quilt a love very graphic quilts I love things that are nice big and bold and half rectangle triangles are perfect for that first of all we'll talk a little bit about the shape of the half rectangle triangle sort of everyone familiar with the term half square triangle half rectangle triangle is the same thing that we're looking at a rectangular shape instead of a square because of the fact that you're length or the height is different than the width of the fabric there's a few things that are a little bit different in how you create them and so that's we're going to play with today there's a couple of different methods that are used to make half rectangle triangles one there's a few specialty rulers out in the market that you can purchase the limitations of those are that you're pretty much stuck with the same length and width of your half rectangle triangle paper piecing is always an option and there's some really wonderful ways that you can do that but today we're actually going to play with the method that's very similar to the same method that you're familiar with and your half square triangles we have a quilt here on the wall that is a half rectangle triangle quilt that I designed that I actually did use paper piecing with because you can get a little bit more accuracy so there's benefits and plus and minuses to every single technique but this method is fun it's easy it's great for quilts where you're using making a whole quote out of the same size half rectangle triangle so the first thing we do is we're just going to take two rectangles of fabric just like that and it does not matter how wide and how tall they are you have long strips just as this that we can use we have sort of smaller strips or smaller rectangles like that that also can be used so you can kind of pick any kind of dimension that you want to and the first thing that we're going to do is to mark our half rectangle or our rectangles so we're usually just lay it on my mat and either I can find my corner we want market a quarter inch from the corner in either direction this and we're going to do this on the back side of the fabric this doesn't have to be an extremely accurate but you want a pretty good point here and I just going to put a dot in that direction we want to do it on the opposite corner one thing that you should note with half rectangle triangles is when you create half rectangle triangles you're actually going to with the two rectangles you're going to create rectangles with the same angle in order to create the other angle you have to make your points in the opposite corners of your rectangles so so and on the back on the opposite side of fabric we're going to do the same thing we're going to create eight those points that are quarter inch from the corner just like that the other way to do it is to take your ruler and place it on top and you could get really nice accurate points there on the top piece of fabric we're going to take our ruler and we're going to line it up through those points and destroy a straight line straight across I'm using a fabric marker here it's inside of your salvage or your seam line so oftentimes I'll pick up whatever I have available the next thing we do is place our fabrics right sides together and this is the trick that makes them different than half square triangles we're going to rotate them so that we can match up those points that we just put in and that's exactly how you want it to look right here now I'm going to take a straight pin and I'm going to put it through that point that we just drew and look on the back of the other piece and put it through the other point as well make sure it's lined up and I'm going to do the same thing on the opposite side it's really easy to do this allows us to have our perfect quarter inch from the corners when we sew this together as well so that's how it should look when we get finished we take that to our sewing machine now all I'm going to do is I'm going to sew using a neutral thread I'm going to sew a quarter inch on either side of that line that I just drew and you should always take your pins out before you get to them [Music] nice and easy a quarter inch on either side Center needle position or in standard stitch width there I'm going to cut my thread and race okay and we're going to fill the opposite side down cut my threads again now in that line that we just drew we're going to come back to our cutting mat and we're going to cut directly through that line we take it through our iron I'm going to press the seam towards the darker fabric here you can press open if that's your preference as well and I'm going to press the opposite side and voila we have a set of half rectangle triangles now that we want to get that opposite angle like we have on this shape here we're simply going to put our our quarter inch dots on the opposite corner the fun things about half rectangle triangles is that there's a lot of different options that you have for playing with that particular shape so you can put it in a very regular sort of an order or pattern you can combine half rectangle triangles of different sizes to create interesting shapes and so in a lot of ways it gives you a lot more possibilities for what you can do even outside of what we can do with a half square triangle and now we're going to take a look at a quilt that I designed using this technique and half rectangle triangles this quilt is called buzzed bird and I designed I wanted to design a quote using a very classic quilt block that I took and put my own interpretation or spin on so it's the birds in the air technique but instead of half square triangles that we talk about a little bit earlier we extended them the half rectangle triangles to kind of create this elongated shape instead of a square shape if it's this quote is really great for showing sort of how I use color I love and understand the color will but I look at colors and how they resonate with me and that how I picked him and select them of course we put it on an angle here and it sort of represents the way the birds are sort of flying in the air and off we start we have the two background colors as well so I get to play with a lot you really want to get super accurate half rectangle triangles and it's really good to play with paper piecing as well so the beauty of this technique is the fact that or this particular shape is that there's a lot of different techniques that you can use to achieve it so the technique that you learned today there's paper piecing and their specialty rulers as well so it's a fun shape to play with because it interacts with each other and itself is actually a half rectangle triangle within a larger half left angle triangle as well so get half rectangle triangles to try [Music]
