sh all right it's that time again time for another midweek video and I'm thinking the top four Poncho shelters you need to know let's get to it now there's a movement that's going around where people are trying to say well if I read the weather I don't need a tarp and in the desert of California or a that might be true however where I'm from in the Eastern Woodlands we have something called humidity now in my experience that humidity is there day and night the sun goes down the humidity is still there as the Earth starts to cool it forms a Mist a fog if you will and It Coats everything how many of you that camped wake up wet your bag is wet your actual sleeping bag is wet your tarps wet your hammock is wet the trees around you are wet it's because that mist adhered to everything now follow me if you're hanging a hammock between two trees with no overhead cover or laying on the ground under a tree and that mist comes in at night lands on all those leaves and you get up and you bump a branch what happens or the wind blows all that water starts coming down like a rainstorm and you're soaking wet I know from experience cuz this has happened to me I've hiked through plenty of areas just bumping trees and bushes and I'm so being wet from the waist down as well as being rained on from the mist from the night before so in my opinion carrying a tarp is one of the better choices simply because if you're out there in the Mist forms and the water drops where's it going to go onto a tarp it's going to shed across your body so with that being said in my humble opinion a good survival instructor not only needs to be able to read the weather patterns besides just being told what to do or look at your phone but be able to apply those weather patterns to the area and the climate where you're from just my opinion here's your typical military style Poncho roughly 5x7 got a hood right here with a drawring and we're going to demonstrate four different types of shelters s so we place it through the loop and then we just simply pull it and what happens here is these toggles roll away from each other locking this down and locking your tarp or your Poncho directly to your line that way it's not hanging off on one corner it's not looking like garbage it's locked in place and it's not going to move now if you have tent Stakes that are small enough like these ones they can fit right inside that grommet hole and then you can just pull it back and STI it directly to the ground so I'm 6'1 and the Poncho actually covers my entire body we have two points of contact in the ground in one large overhead cover here at a 45Β° angle it's a wind screen or a Wind Block on the outside you can grab this tarp twist it and actually put a piece of cordage or rope or string onto it and actually pull it back give you more room on the inside the first toggle that we put on we're going to leave in place we disconnected the other one took the stakes out take out our batwing like we talked about we have three points of contact three Stakes one two and three we basically have two walls in a ceiling open area front here room for a campfire over there most importantly in my opinion if rain were to start dumping this is the ideal shelter you can Hunker back inside here there's even room for your gear and ride the storm out for the A-frame all we're going to do is Drop The Ridge line down to about your knee height go to the center grommets on our tarp and Pitch it out like this and then a frame configuration [Music] [Applause] the last one is a no-brainer it's called a ranger roll is a lightweight military Sleep System where you combine a poncho or military style Poncho with a wubby or poncho liner and again it creates a lightweight sleeping bag or sleep system so all you're going to do here is take your strings and put them through your grommet and then simply tie it however you see fit if you have some type of sleep pad like this one right here you have two options or two choices One open these layers up and you can slide it inside there all the way down and then simply fold it in half and button it up downside your Poncho is now going to be on the leaves on the sticks if you move around the night it's going to rub in there could it poke holes in it yes could it wear it thin yes could it damage it at some point where it starts leaking down the road yes so again like I preach on my channel what's your intent if you don't care and you're in soft sand or soft dirt or you have something underneath you or you're doing this inside of a tent I don't see a problem with it for me I'll keep the pad on the underside of it meaning on the bottom like so that way I can protect the poncho as much as possible [Applause] there you go four simple Poncho shelters that you should know then we briefly talked about the importance of carrying a tarp and using a tarp after all if you're going to carry it you might as well use it and if you're in the part of the country where I live at you're getting that mist that Dew that fog and in my opinion it's better to use it than wake up wet just my humble opinion with that all the gear in my videos can
