many of you enjoyed our previous news article analysis so let's do it again this time with an article from the BBC we will analyze the advanced vocabulary and grammar in each paragraph I will take detailed notes and you can download a free pdf of these notes by clicking the link in the description and just like last time at the end of the lesson I will read the entire article again a little little bit faster this is an opportunity to practice your pronunciation and intonation today's article is about one of my favorite moments in history let's look at the title the 1968 photo that changed the world more than 50 years after it was shot earthrise continues to be seen as one of the most iconic Environmental photographs ever taken on Christmas Eve 1968 the crew of Apollo 8 captured a spectacular site as they orbited the moon the illuminated Earth appearing above the barren lunar Horizon the NASA astronauts were a struck by what they saw the verb to shoot which is shot in the past tense means to film something or take a photo of something for example the Lord of the Rings movies were shot in New Zealand here we have a construction using the passive voice to be seen the passive voice shows that the person who does the action is one of these three things unknown not important or in this case General many people see earthrise this would be the active form but we want to focus on the photograph earthrise and how earthrise is seen in general by most people next we have the adjective iconic the first syllable is pronounced with a long I sound iconic this means that something or someone is very famous and represents a very important idea this week we will look carefully at probably the most iconic figure in American History Abraham Lincoln Britney always brought like an iconic moment an iconic look an iconic something a crew is a group of people who work on a ship a plane or a spaceship Apollo 8 was the name of the first spaceship to successfully fly to the moon they didn't land on the moon they just circled around it but at the time time this was a huge deal because it showed that we could finally send people really far into space and bring them back safely a site is just something that you can see something can be a common site a rare site or in this case a spectacular site to orbit means to travel in a curved path around another much larger object for example the moon orbits the earth and the Earth orbits the Sun the verb illuminate means to fill a place with light so here the adjective illuminated means to be filled with light ah I love this word it's one of my favorites if a place is Barren that means the land or soil has no plants growing on it next we have lunar Horizon in lunar is the adjective for anything that's related to the Moon you often see this word in collocations like lunar eclipse and Lunar New Year The Horizon is the line where it looks like the land or the water meets the sky so the full name of this US government agency is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration but everyone knows this as NASA pronounced with two syllables NASA next we have an adjective to be a struck but first we need to understand the root a as a noun a is a very strong feeling of fear wonder and respect all at the same time so if you're a struck you feel a lot of respect for how important and amazing something is if the sentence has an object then we have to follow this with the preposition by you are a struck by something notice the grammar here what they saw this is extremely important let me show you some examples of a very common mistake when is the meeting do you know when is the meeting this is incorrect we have to say do you know when the meeting is I don't know when is the meeting the correct sentence is I don't know when the meeting is remember that most of the time we only switch the subject and the verb when we're asking a direct question like in the first example question word verb subject in sentences 2 and three after the question word we follow the normal sentence pattern not the question pattern that's because these are just objects of the sentence I don't know that that's the object but that could be anything I don't know his name I don't know the answer I don't know when the meeting is so going back to the article it would be incorrect to say they were a struck by what did they see because this is not a direct question this is just the object of the verb this is the thing that they were all struck by these constructions are called embedded questions let me know in the comments if you would like a detailed lesson about this grammar point in the future the image was coined earthrise it was the first color photograph of Earth taken from space and quickly circulated around the world the photo is widely credited with propelling the Global Environmental movement and leading to the creation of Earth Day an annual event promoting environmental activism and awareness in 1970 to coin is a fun verb that means to create a new word or expression that many people start to use many people believe that Canadian rapper Drake coined the slang term YOLO which means you only live once he helped coin the term data scientist you know you're somebody important when you coin a new term also many words that end with the unstressed UR suffix in British English are spelled with o r in American English other examples of this are words like Flavor honor and neighbor the verb circulate means to spread and become known by many people imagine that you live in a really small town where everyone knows each other information tends to circulate very quickly let's break down this common cocation widely credited the verb to credit means to recognize or honor that someone or something is the reason why something positive happens the actress credits her family with her success so her family is responsible for her success the adverb widely before a verb or an adjective means by a large number of people or in many different places some other common collocations include widely available widely known and widely accepted here we have a very creative use of the verb Propel traditionally to propel something means to push or drive something forward so trains are propelled by steam but in this context Propel means to force a particular situation to happen or progress activism is the act of working for social or political change a person who uses strong actions to help make these changes is an activist finally we have the noun awareness if we remove the noun suffix we have the adjective aware if you are aware of something you realize or you know that something exists so promoting awareness means you want to inform people about something you especially want people to pay attention to possible problems or dangers it clearly showed the Earth from space but also put it into a context that we hadn't seen before it showed that Earth was this very vulnerable sphere in space 18 months after the Apollo 8 astronauts shot earthrise 20 million people took to the streets across the US to protest environmental destruction in the first ever Earth Day this is a variation of a very common collocation put something into context this means to provide extra information so that other people can understand something more completely um I think we were all really a struck and it put a lot of things into context so that was an amazing moment so I'd like to clarify and put it into context because in some context all of them are accurate another context it can be misleading so what type of context the perspective of Earth from space this is a context that we hadn't seen before this sentence uses the past perfect tense had or hadn't plus the past participle form of the verb the focus is on the relationship between two events in the past let me put this into context the Apollo 8 astronauts took this photo in 1968 but before this time humans didn't see Earth from space the best way to emphasize the connection of these events is to use the past perfect tense to describe the event that happened first or in the deeper past and use the simple past tense to describe the more recent event so let's change this before the Apollo 8 astronauts took this photo we hadn't seen Earth from space or we hadn't seen Earth from space until the Apollo 8 astronauts took this photo next we have the adjective vulnerable the first syllable is stressed vulnerable this means that something or someone is is easy to damage or harm this can be physical or emotional she was extremely vulnerable after her divorce computers that don't have any security are vulnerable to viruses a sphere is a round threedimensional object like a ball or a globe here we have an idiomatic expression take to the streets which which means that a large group of people go outside on the streets to celebrate something or to protest something thousands of people took to the streets to celebrate the team's Victory let's talk about first ever we use this like an adjective and sometimes you'll see these words connected this emphasizes that something is happening for the first time in history usually you need to use this with the definite article the or with a possessive determiner like my your his Etc hello and welcome to the first ever College Humor podcast I wrote my first ever song when I was like four years old and it was about her the earthrise photo played a pivotal role in encouraging people to take part in environmental activism that's where Earth rise's real strength and importance lies it was able to sum up so much in just a single image in a way that transcended documents and papers this collocation is crucial to play a role in something this means that something has an effect or an influence on something else he didn't tell us why he left the company but I think that his boss played a role in his decision even the most talented and hardworking actors say that sometimes luck plays a role in becoming successful here we have a formal adjective pivotal the first syllable is stressed pivotal this means that something is more important than anything else in a situation now in order to tell you this story I want to go back to a pivotal moment in US history yes there have been some books that were pivotal for me um in my early life and in my recent life another important verb to encourage someone to do something this means to convince or motivate someone to do something the government doubled the price of cigarettes in hopes that this will encourage smokers to stop I hope my lessons encourage you to keep improving your English in formal or literary contexts the verb lie can mean to exist in or to be caused by a particular thing situation person Etc the future of this city lies in the hands of the voters the difficulty of proving that he committed the crime lies in the lack of evidence so this difficulty is caused by the lack of evidence next we have a phrasal verb to sum something or someone up means to describe or show the most important qualities of something in a very short and simple way at the end of his lecture the professor summed up the facts that he presented earlier this is my lazy cousin I think this picture sums him up perfectly and finally we have transcend this is a formal verb that means to go beyond the normal limits of something here are some examples from some very well-known people in American history like music and art love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries our loyalties must transcend our race our tribe our class and our nation and this means we must develop a world perspective now I'll go back and read the whole article at a natural speed you use this as an opportunity to read along with me and practice your listening and pronunciation you can slow down the video if needed the 1968 photo that changed the world more than 50 years after it was shot earthrise continues to be seen as one of the most iconic environmental photographs ever taken on Christmas Eve 1968 the crew of apoll 8 captured a spectacular sight as
