sneak peeks at disney's new guardians of the galaxy coaster magic band plus in action new tech coming to your disney hotel room we've got all the details today on dfv guide [Music] hey everybody it's aj for disney food blog this week we're bringing you news from exclusive disney media events snacks and new restaurant announcements from disneyland and the disney inspired candle of your dreams we got a lot of exciting things to cover so let's get started this week we got a very special opportunity to check out disney world's newest ride before it officially opens you'll want to have those park passes ready brush up on your virtual queue how to's or be prepared to shell out some extra cash if you want to ride guardians of the galaxy cosmic rewind once it opens on may 27th we'll be bringing you a full video soon with all the details hidden easter eggs tips and tricks on how to ride what is about to be epcot's most popular ride we've got some new details on epcot's overhaul guardians of the galaxy might be one of the most anticipated additions to epcot but that's not all that's coming to the park journey of water inspired by moana is well into construction as you'd know if you check with us every week in our news video but disney's just revealed some new concept art that gives us a closer look and a more detailed view of what this finished exploration trail is going to look like and just how much space it's gonna take up we finally got word on epcot's new festival area as well this project has been flying under the radar and while it looks different than the three-story structure that was originally planned epcot will finally have a home base for its festivals in communicore hall and communicore plaza communicore plaza is an outdoor space that will serve as a festival hub it can host large-scale concerts as well communicore hall is within the plaza and will be epcot's designated festival center it will be home to a wide variety of experiences with food art live music and more there will even be a demonstration kitchen a mixology bar and exhibition and gallery space the plaza is a part of epcot's world celebration neighborhood which will be a hub divided into lots of different gardens that will change with the seasons and offer some much needed shade in the park and echo the nighttime display on spaceship earth pretty and functional communicore hall is also getting a new character meet and greet mickey and friends will be the replacement for the now closed character spot inside that festival plaza disney has not yet announced when any of these projects will be completed though last we heard journey of water was expected to open sometime in 2022 sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know when we learn of any opening dates and other exciting news coming out of epcot before its big 40th anniversary on october 1st 2022 and magic band plus is getting close to its official launch even though a few of the next generation magic bands made it onto shelves in disney springs this week the tech is not quite ready for guests but we got a special preview of how they'll work along with the initial 16 designs that we'll release soon at our media event this week these bands will do everything that existing magic magicbands do they'll work is your ticket to the parks your hotel key and a method of payment but they'll also have some new interactive features when you use magicbandplus to tap into a park the band itself will light up with rainbow colors and once inside you can interact with the 50th anniversary golden statues just wave to the characters while wearing your band and they'll actually talk to you there's also a corresponding scavenger hunt type game where you can collect each character in the play disney parks app as you interact with those statues and by collecting characters you can unlock augmented reality portals to see different characters lands on your phone there's also going to be a new game in galaxy's edge when you use your magic band plus with the play disney parks app on your phone you can track down virtual bounties throughout the land as a bounty hunter and collect them to return to the guildmaster these bounties start out pretty easy to find but they get harder as you continue to collect them when we purchased our magicband plus when they were released by accident the price was 29.99 annual pass holders and hotel guests will likely get a discount magicbandplus will become available at disneyland resort later this year but note that some of the features will vary between disneyland and disney world disney is set to share more details on that soon and it will launch in summer 2022 in disney world so not long ago we shared that disney will be debuting a new digital service called hey disney developed in partnership with amazon's alexa devices those will debut in disney world and disneyland hotel rooms it will also be made available for guests to use at home through their own amazon alexa devices and the service is going to act as an assistant to answer questions like what time does epcot open today or what's the weather like today but it will also allow guests to interact with characters in a brand new way for example you might ask hey disney what's the weather gonna be like and get some comments from olaf about just how much he loves warm weather characters can also tell jokes and hey disney will feature trivia games as well they're going to be soundscapes stories and magic moments where characters may leave you with messages hey disney will also introduce a new character the disney magical companion this character serves as your guide to all things disney to answer questions tell you the weather set alarms introduce you to characters guide you to surprises and more now we're still waiting to hear exactly when fantasmic will return to hollywood studios later this year but we now know more details about what will be different when this nighttime show finally returns a new show sequence will feature characters like mulan pocahontas aladdin moana and elsa and the pocahontas section of the show will be receiving the biggest changes and overhaul when the show returns disney says there will also be new technical enhancements so you should sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know when disney announces the return date of fantasmic the former nba experience and disney quest building has been revived with a brand new star wars virtual reality experience disney world is working with ilmax lab lucasfilm's immersive entertainment studios to bring a preview of meta quest 2 star wars tales from the galaxy's edge to disney springs from may 2nd through july 21st 12 p.m to 10 p.m each day you can try out a free virtual reality game that takes place on bat 2 which is the planet that's brought to life in star wars galaxy's edge we were able to eat ronto raps and played games of darts while on the virtual battle for about 8 minutes everyone who tests out this preview will be given a 25 store credit for the quest store to use on games like the one that's being previewed in restaurant and snack news it's a new month and that means new limited time flavors at gideon's bake house in disney springs the may limited edition cookie flavor is chocolate peanut butter swirl this is a nearly half pound cookie and it debuted in march 2021 it's made with a combination of peanut butter dough swirled with triple chocolate dough and topped with chocolate chips peanut butter chips and house-made candied peanuts gideon's will also be serving up a new cake flavor for the month of may the peanut butter and jelly cake the cake features three layers of vanilla cake as the bread smothered in peanut butter buttercream and filled with channels of grape jelly you can continue celebrating cinco de mayo all month long with these new margaritas at disney's boardwalk in first up is the pina picante from bellevue lounge this drink features haridura reposada tequila cointreau liqueur habanero pineapple juice and lime juice and is garnished with pineapple and jalapeno and had a tahini rim for 15 boardwalk joes currently has the fiesta de mango drink this has lunasul reposado tequila habanero mango smoothie lime juice and seagram's club soda and is garnished with pineapple orange and jalapenos this also had a tahin rim for 14 you can grab the dia de fuego cocktail at the leaving horse libations pool bar as well this one has haridura reposado tequila grand marnier blood orange puree lime juice lime sour mix and habanero and is garnished with the tajin rim and jalapeno slices for 15 that last one had the most heat though all three of these new cocktails are a little bit spicy animal kingdom's dawa bar is serving up another specialty cocktail for the month of may which is also asian american native hawaiian pacific islander heritage month the mango punch is made with parrot bay coconut rum stoli vanilla vodka mango puree and rice milk is very refreshing and it reminded us of a pina colada on the placards at dawa bar you can read about the origins of mango harvesting an industry with roots in india that has spread to locations like africa australia hawaii central america and the philippines an animal kingdom is also celebrating asian american native hawaiian pacific islander heritage month by bringing kakigori to the park this shave ice snack has been popular in epcot's japan pavilion for years but for the month of may you can get it at animal kingdom caravan road kiosk as well the version here is watermelon topped with sweet and condensed milk get it for 4.99 but watch out because it will melt fast in that florida heat all-star sports is celebrating the opening of dr strange and the multiverse of madness with a new cherry cheesecake of madness it's cherry cheesecake on a layer of chocolate cake covered in a cherry and chocolate glace with wafer shard pieces and it's filled with a cherry compote the cheesecake was a good blend of cream cheese and cherry flavors and that combo was excellent those wafer shards though they can stay in the mirror dimension now you'll find the strawberry bliss cupcake at landscape of flavors at disney's art of animation resort this very pink cupcake is made of yellow cake filled with strawberry boba topped a strawberry buttercream and white vanilla wafers with white chocolate and non-per reals it was sweet it had very artificial strawberry taste to it so not probably one we'd run to grab if you have a giant sweet tooth this one's going to be around until may 11th so get it for 5.79 this week we also tried the absolutely if not creatively named mother's day dessert that can be found at all three all-star resorts another strawberry one this time it's strawberry mousse with strawberry compote and lemon curd it's decorated with a passionfruit candy crisp it was very light and refreshing and well it was also pretty sweet that lemon curd cut the sweetness a little bit try it for 5.99 now introducing the ube tiramisu pop from vividly ill gelato in disney springs it's made of ube cream with graham cracker crumbs soaked with coconut ube is a purple sweet potato that has mellow sweet flavor this pop had a great texture and was a nice cold dessert for a hot day get it for 7.46 which is oddly specific and emirates patisserie in disney springs is getting in on the ube trend too they've got an ube chiffon cake layered with banana caramel mousse and banana liqueur glassage it reminded us of an opera cake with those layers the banana and ube went well together but this is definitely a flavor combo that's a little unexpected like everything at amarette's it was gorgeous it's eight dollars and will be around through the month of may and boardwalk inn's bellevue lounge has one more cocktail submission for the week this one is a secret menu item it's called mother's love here for mother's day obviously it's a fun and unique twist on a champagne cocktail made with graham-backed brute rose champagne i'm priscin lemon juice and simple syrup and garnished with a lemon twist for 15 the purple hue is from the empress gin which is colored with butterfly pea blossom it's not listed on the official menu so make sure to ask the bartender about it disney has announced a few big changes and additions coming to downtown disney the shopping and dining district near disneyland and that now includes a slew of new restaurant announcements one of the new restaurants coming to the area is the world renowned family owned din tai fung this spot is famous for soup dumplings and hours long waits to get inside chef carlos gatan is creating a menu of mexican cuisine for paseo and centrico which will also take over the building currently occupied by qatar and uva bar the restaurant will also have a courtyard bar and dining area and ralph brennan's jazz kitchen is working on some major changes that will bring a fresh approach to the menu while staying true to the heart of new orleans earl of sandwich will also be hosting a pop-up spot to grab those tasty sandwiches for a limited time now new restaurants aren't the only food news going on at disneyland we got a few new snacks to tell you about as well first up those banana beignets at the mint julep bar they're basically the regular mickey beignets but they get their banana taste from being rolled in banana powdered sugar which to be honest tasted just like banana laffy taffys for us and there's also a new passion fruit mint julep if you're a fan of fruity and tart drinks next up the pineapple tres leches churro at the hollywood land churro cart and disney california adventure this is really just a classic churro with a pineapple tres leches dipping sauce which was less trace lychees and more just sweet tasty pineapple all around it was delicious even if it wasn't the most exciting churro we've seen in a while gibson girl ice cream parlor is serving up the celebration sunday this substantial sunday is made with vanilla cake hot fudge choice of ice cream whipped cream sprinkles and a chocolate candle served in a mickey ear hat bowl either a birthday mickey ear hat bowl or an unbirthday mickey ear hat bowl at 15 49 it is a little pricey but at least you do get to keep that souvenir bowl and finally the gordita dog is the hot dog of the month over at craftsman bar and grill at the grand californian it costs 13 and has lightly grilled flatbread with a black green spread a beef hot dog melted cheese crema pico de gallo and micro cilantro served with fries we didn't care much for the black bean spread but it didn't detract from the rest of the dish in merchandise news the first thing we want to tell you about is that skyliner popcorn bucket and this time they have a 50th anniversary theme the yellow bucket is popping up at locations around the parks we saw in epcot and hollywood studios so far it features lots of 50th anniversary motifs mickey and minnie and chip and dale you can grab it for 19 and disneyland has been celebrating the return of the main street electrical parade with lots of light up new merch and we finally spotted the light bulb sipper cup at the refreshment corner this cup is 1629 and is served with your choice of fountain beverage at the time of purchase the best part it lights up you can find them at the refreshment corner and at the red rose tavern the newest dooney and burke collection has arrived at uptown jewelers and magic kingdom this pattern features remy and a meal along with some cheese against a deep red background and you can get it in either crossbody satchel or tote style these new bags are also available on shop disney a new wishables collection has arrived in disney world we found the millennium falcon set at tatooine traders in hollywood studios you can get a porg hondo anaka r5p8 or the millennium falcon inside the blind bag or purchase chewbacca on his own each are 14.99 and pandora world of avatar is celebrating its five-year anniversary can you believe it's been that long on may 27th and there's going to be a lot more merchandise available for this occasion but we got a sneak peek of the new offerings at a media event this week the new collection includes t-shirts backpacks a real snazzy windbreaker navi ear headband mug water bottle but most importantly a candle and yes that candle smells just like the ride navi river journey expect to see this merch in animal kingdom soon
