[Music] whatare pants so today it's very special day because we're gonna fly a space shuttle which you know not too different to what we normally do but it's gonna have a twist as you could probably tell from the title of this video and the thumbnail probably I haven't I don't name of this I've I mean as I record this I haven't made anything yeah you know you're not videos worked at you but we're gonna go here to the space plane hangar so some of you may remember this magnificent beast from my Falcon Heavy recreation and discuss a quick spin see if it still works okay so some of you may remember that the TV show from England Top Gear did an episode where they sent a Reliant Robin into space at least they tried to they didn't get very far there was a stage separation error and the main tank didn't attach and the whole thing came crashing down so I'm gonna try and I'm gonna try and one up top gear and get a Reliant Robin into space and back again so the first thing we the foot the first thing we need to do is convert this thing into a glider let's do that first thing I'm gonna do is add some sort of vertical stabilizer and that is pretty good I'm pretty proud of myself that's at these now I'd say that's pretty darn good we don't swear on this Christian channel just officer them right back so then the elevators instill that freedom of movement what do you think of that that's a pretty good start let's add some straights actually oh yes I do that they say it definitely looks the part let's do a quick drop test so we're staying pretty Wells so we're gonna all three autos so we're trying probably not gonna glide this to land but it's only a test so we don't need it to survive we just need to make sure it will actually glide think of this is the computer simulation aspect of the mission so pitching up this is going well so far probably a little bit knows every listen her her her we are coming down we have all these parachutes to have as a backup in the gutter for this kind of craft we probably need a few additional plans in case the project a needle in the likely events that the main the main plan fails but no this is pitching up quite nicely and once we had to the thicker part the atmosphere should continue to picture it might I think we've hit [Music] [Music] Oh well that went well yes so we'll bring that center of lift forwards a bit what we'll do is we'll add some cleaners like this will attachment starting again we'll just offset them into the front like this so not quite as unsightly but we still got a small control surface there now I'm gonna move these okay so so far so good not done anything yet drop test again still not flying great thank you probably mitigated by all those struts of it okay an hour in business I still have this Tennessee to pitch down low don't we yeah wait more of the car is here it's it's still in a Reliant Robin shape so I'd call that progress now what we may need to do move this as far anteriorly as we can and pretty good play for this one actually I think we could do anything either what we could do is do this have some Verna engines one there and one there and then we'll add some sort of fuel tank as well I mean to fair this is actually a shuttle isness we should probably think about attaching an engine to it as well so that actually let's focus on that let's focus on it I quoted in this originally because this is quite a crucial thing for the balance of the ship now it's too big now that actually looks like a pretty decent size and then what we'll do is we'll add an engine it's gonna be one engine for this baby the vector will just drop this down just nice and tucked away inside the boot looks pretty good actually considering what it is and it might actually be worth giving this thing controls like like rubbish having some sort of reaction wheel system work this point has a smaller profile isn't it [Music] now the weight of that injury will actually help with help with balancing out this aerodynamics hopefully let's see oh this thing flies beautifully now so I'll go try keeping my speed as high as possible so I know this is gonna stall quite easily at low speed so we're gonna pitch up at the very last second to maintain our Horeb maintain some degree of speed but look at that that's a one heck of an improvement hey I'll say so obviously we were landing it in water so it's not very representative not very representative of how it would actually you know land on the ground okay we've got a nice basic structure so now we need to think about getting this thing into space right so let's do that so first things first you know just build out the obvious really so we'll go for the and we'll go for the orange tank because you know shuttle and all that yeah cutting it bit closes in it that's just good feet drag this out of it that's pretty good aerodynamic thing actually given this thing is not going to really work too well that's out of you SAS units and up here and then we will try initially to have no engine on the actual fuel tank night we'll do a NASA style one let's give that a shot so add some struts and [Music] and then it might worth having some SRBs whoever the mid-sized ones now I don't not too optimistic about this working but I've been wrong before and of course you having to have some sort of fuel tank systems fuel flow system okay begin flight number one unmount all right this is a big moment for us being a five four three two one [Music] here we go [Music] I'm gonna go ahead and call an unsuccessful flight right ready going in three two one Oh see now the issue is when we tear that engine down our twr goes through the toilet so I know one little click that should now be adequate because issue is before the engine was kind of thrusting like this way you ideally want your engines to thrust through your center of mass it's not quite but the gimbal on that thing should compensate for that and hopefully these SCS wheels will as well there we go [Music] I don't really control I think I probe calm I've got destroyed it's all up to God now come on run out of fuel well we can still drive it I'm gonna move this thing back to to get rid of Lee and then we may as well actually that's pointed the right way if I reckon half the problem was the fact that this thing was hitting that clamp okay flight number three the shuttle down settle down throttle up read love alright this is going well Oh thoughtful down battle down no not Mission Control cracker box yeah hey [Music] [Music] I really hope that norms in that building okay so what what every round every failure comes with some sort of lesson learned but I don't think I've really learned anything I'm just gonna keep playing around with the engine what I need some sort of abort system so the bots will just I mean decouple that's probably good and shut down this now we have at least some kind of rudimentary abort system modern first this time it's done not the space hitter come on just I need more vertical ascension really at least the least we've cleared the Vav I mean I feel like I'm not we're not achieving anything here are we we just sort of this is like just a very expensive helicopter that may or may not crash into a building at any given time for Cara thrust is needed her vertical ascension Nancy [Music] so that guy that [Music] I bought a board a perfect landing alert Bakari drive away we can play Center has seen better days but this is how they get into space though I reckon these this is Poirier a lost cause those boosters will need something a bit more beefy I mean we could always go for the like liquid fuel like that before we do that I'd quite like cereal dude the top gear slash NASA star 1 the NASA did NASA totally copied Top Gear's designed in May with their SRBs rather than liquid fuel now this looks a big goofy now because these are as bigger than the main tank but what we ought to do is this [Music] extend it out a little bit why not these pleased to hear but for the actual main one instead of having a nose code we have a shielded docking port and actions I'm going to say we have control from here that way we're controlling from the actual central tank which is where the centre of centre of mass is so we may get some gains I'd actually know it's just a theory a games [Music] forgot to add got tied launch pants well as low as possible these hey ho let's go Oh God so this time I remember the launch clamps but forgot to check my staging [Music] that is really concentrated hard oh my god this is definitely the best flight we've had so far okay look at that so it's not flying - well it's not the most stable thing let's just take control from the docking ports Wow what talk about going from nought to ten really fast it is not the easiest thing to fly it's hard for me to talk and flight at the same time I was going to keep on cruising let's try an aim for ten kilometers hour I mean I want to get into orbit as the ultimate goal of this flight as a preliminary test flight so it's gonna Coco go but a nice angle here prepared to stage our beautiful separation it just looks ridiculous doesn't it I know it's on its side but I'm gonna take it I don't if I should I'm know if I'm gonna I'm losing it I'm losing it I've regained it I've not regained it [Music] come on baby I don't think it's all over the dream dream is dead just a ball will this be a good opportunity to fly it back actually so consider this a glide Testament that was in violence flushed a mother we definitely have the thrust-to-weight ratio with us now the issue was we kept losing controls if we add some steering fins what it what thrusting what to be able to just under a hard [Music] backwater [Music] we can start banking 90 degrees a pretty strong start if I do say so myself all systems are normal just gonna keep on up see I try to get cocky and align it again but it's now sort of lost its SAS control it's really wanting to flow along its retrograde marker and they go the SRBs so I'm just going to keep this held and there's ten kilometers okay so let's see if we can get an Apple axis that goes out of the atmosphere the start may have spoken too soon not-not-not okay well this isn't our another opportunity has presented itself to try out gliding this to the runway how do you know what to do let's try this let's let's add some more create some more and burn engines might be overkill for the moment I'm just testing at the moment so let's try this take water looked good so remember that so we're not going to use the burner engine to the moment because we know that this thing can fly relatively straight when using the SRBs water what a burnished shot Bay so this is flying pretty rock steady so far so I'm just not going to try and do a proper gravity turn because the objective is just get beyond the atmosphere nothing more than that for now so we're just going to basically going straight up it really really comes this here here that is the most beautiful majestic thing that I ever did saw okay we're going to be going in a polar direction now then those Avengers are really able to work aren't they might be worth adding maybe some bigger wingtips to the main tank I don't see no I Delta V we've still got a lot left and look at our alpha access it could be that if we could Paulie we might be able to do an orbital flight like this we just have to do a big long burn in space and there we are we have a look at the map screen you can see we now have an apple abscess there skipper the skipper skipper 100 well that's not actually say what about 638 meters per second remaining so we only need a mere 1,000 meters per second so in order to achieve a stable orbit so we have 1060 so we're actually only about 700 meters per second of Delta V short I just see how far yeah so this is the number here for the fuel tank the orange tank this is the rest of the shuttle we have bingo fuel old gods the croquette yes I think I figured out why this thing didn't control that well because it's not controlling from the forward part of the craft so now we know what I'll do is I'll add a junior docking port or something that we can control from okay so that's a pretty I'm pretty happy with that let's try and aim for this landmass I'm gonna point this pro-grade because again this thing's not gonna fly too well I'm just gonna let it Coast down luckily we're all going where you know we're already going fast enough to have any significant reentry heating effect worries now we've got this problem again of those K nerds so we just stable disable those we should regain stability and quite nicely and we have why is that one still firing or is it just time warp now this we're gonna let it fall and yeah there we go that's control regained let's try and aim for this but this looks relatively flat doesn't it and now we're back under control I'm going to tentatively reactivate them come on baby okay Mission Control we're coming oh yeah destroyed mission control him with posts down trying not to picture to them that's plus of a second come on stay balanced rainbow gently doesn't how is that today we are our first successful flight I'm pretty happy I genuinely didn't think I'd get it this quickly so let's bless some let's build upon this so we've managed to get into space back for a space and landed so it's going well but now we need to space isn't enough we need to get this thing into orbit so let's try that all right so the issue was we didn't have enough fuel so this well let's just take the simplest approach first just add some more fuel tanks and then we'll adjust accordingly as needed so action group - I'll do let's bind it to the seat driver's side seat haven't really didn't really do anything for this I just sort of added the extra fuel tanks and away we go now already that's a much more stable liftoff probably spoke a little too soon Oh tonight I'm just gonna end just refer to her it's a lost cause that flight we'll just call that a simulation why needs to ouch is this the burns I'm switching control to the docking port after launch and I that throws off a little bit so we'll switch to the control point at launch rather than you know after the launch so we'll just change control now okay three two one [Music] and now we begin I'm just gonna relinquish SAS power every so often my hitting F and that just means that this thing will naturally tip to follow along the pro-grade marker they go the SRBs I want us to point a little bit more towards the red marker at this point because we're coming up to the 10 kilometer mark and then we ideally want to be pointing 45 degrees to the surface this is so hard this is one of the worst flying ships I think I've ever flown they've got 2,000 meters per second of orange tank remaining and at about 300 in the shuttle itself after that so this rate we are gonna have enough to get into orbit provided I don't mess something up horribly start tipping ourselves over gradually but not to come on there's little ridiculous look at it our bus is now above the common line and it's not too ridiculously steep we only have about we'd have a lot of fuel left though when I get it led to get to 80 and then we'll stop as a team carry on following now comes the big the big question [Music] we need oh my god we have enough huh just this is very exciting okay there's gonna be a 14 second burn I'm not gonna burn at full throttle though because I suspect we're gonna start losing control especially now we're lucky and we haven't got any ability to use control services to assist in stability so we're just gonna tentatively I might burn a half so it would be a 28 second burn [Music] 419 second remaining but we only 197 to complete circularization clearest the time and they are we've lost some undercarriage it doesn't matter come on our Paris is out of the atmosphere [Music] we did it well how about that a our first success obviously this is not it because we need this is just a test flight we need to have a crew so now let's see if we can land this back at the curb with Space Center so I'm not gonna do multiple attempts we'll just do the wall and if I mess it up so be it there we go I'll be really great if we didn't if we weren't destroyed but then again I think what's happening is the game's freaking out I don't know what to do that wheel okay so we definitely did get destroyed didn't we that's it we've got an orbital vehicle now so you know what it's time for now this game is a bit stupid in a lot of ways but one of the ways it's stupid is you can't put crew into command seats off the bat you have to do this stupid thing Weaver who would like a some sort of contraption to get them on the ship I don't need to do this once because I'm orders I'll just create a custom quick save to revert the flight we only need to revert it because we know the craft itself is flawless clearly so Jebidiah go and bill can take the passenger seat please don't explode get your camera jebadiah and Billa look at that when I'll set up or do what's that do if you think first we need to set up camera tools auto fire a position target self launch okay so throughout the flight I would give you some cool shots also I'm currently not wearing my flight suit and flight see that mean first of all we need the flight goggles we can't be we dealing with designers glasses anymore or there we go there we go I flight hats as well it's very cold up in space [Music] [Applause] [Music] maybe it needs to go on the other way around to actually hear stuff though we are an efficient Space Agency okay give me my microphone to communicate with ground with ground control during our flights okay ground control also it's a special occasion the meteor hit I'm just gonna put on a smart tie there we go so I think we're pretty much ready to go I look pretty handsome just made my my boot iron shot there so without further ado I'm ready jebediah and bill probably aren't ready Mission Control are you ready oh yeah that's right okay the world's media is standing by I can't see much through these red goggles everything is the same color five four three two one ignition okay Oh God it's not going not the best takeoff so far it goes back on track [Music] okay not the greatest start or we've recovered I don't think the world's media noticed so we're doing okay okay okay we're clear clean separation so very well it's not going well come on pick up a bit this isn't going quite as well as the test flight did but the curve was are keeping their cool jebadiah raining Rocksteady I though they just died of shock and they're just frozen there I think we wasted too much fuel on the seventh we're going to go again [Music] okay this is already a much cleaner liftoff I'm gonna just turn down the vector slightly I really want to aim for a clean orbit as close to equatorial as possible just because this thing has virtually no control upon re-entry so it will be much easier to get back to the runway if we have to start with I think as any attempt at me I do to correct that it just sends us further and further over so I'm just gonna ignore it I'm just gonna try and get our apps above the common kind of worry about the rest later [Music] but this is so weird look I'll shoot bloody tilt it I'm graphing the executive decision we'd have enough fuel [Music] so for most of this tip I'm just going to rely on the SRBs overpowering the vector and naturally pushing the craft over why are we still flying I say what I'm gonna revert I'm gonna revert and do this and we're disabled all the control surfaces for the liftoff so I think they're doing more harm than good now why has that happened was major standing by once again three two one [Music] beautiful [Music] this is fine the issue is that we rolled over and I didn't want to roll over god this thing's doesn't bloody controller does it at all okay so what is going wrong here how did we get a flight so easily and now we're just struggling is it the weight of the codes I feel like the weight the code was very insignificant there was the thing it's controls surprisingly well because we're so low in the atmosphere at this point it's only once the atmosphere starts to get a bit more tenuous that we start to have a lot more difficulty controlling it but I've whacked up the authority limited here so to show a bit more lateral control so I'm just waiting now for the solid fuel to the police which it's really has but this is already I think this is probably the best flight we've had so far and it comes to the manned mission so there go the SRBs looks so ridiculous doesn't it okay when our 39 seconds to a collapses there are 10 or gods luckily we got those Vernor engines to attempt a gravity turn very slowly berlin prorate until all going to live Oh God we'd have enough delta-v I'm gonna have to take a quick intermission whilst his camera recharges ah hello it is the dawn of a new day my friends because III didn't turn on the plug to charge my camera's battery so uh how to charge overnight so we're in a different day but let's get back to where we were so begin the necessary flight preparations oh yes there we five four three two one it's going well so far think now we're on like a new day of I've had some sleep refreshed myself I'm feeling confident about this working first time but then again you go absolutely so I think we'll just hold this angle until the SRBs burnout okay Mission Control can hear me oh yeah Mission Control is still that's still the best I've gone dirt okay this is actually going really well so far and we have confirmed stage separation of the SRBs sugar throttle up that vectors we didn't carry on tipping over too much how's that for a flyby as we smash through the ten kilometer mark how this is a very well controlled flight I must admit notice the active icon remove the extra Zach steps I went to I mean I'll have to check that I mean so far the vaguest timeline is on an hour and a half of footage so I'm gonna have to cut this down so obviously over the course of an hour a heart I can't remember the exact process as I had to go through in order to get to this point I live it was because I disabled with these elevators or not but whatever it is it's going well our app box escapes 20002 though now we're getting to the twenty kilometer mark the atmosphere is becoming ever more tenuous and as you can see we're starting to drift aren't we so I'm gonna fire up the RCS thrusters but I don't rely on them too much because I think what happened last time we ran out of fuel because I was relying too much on the burner engines they were just burning off all the oxidizer although corner perhaps is a 40 come on just keep it steady Jeb keep it steady I'm going to attempt a correction maneuver [Music] okay let's just hold it like this our time to app apps is running out though as long as we're watching this time and all that to fool too much who have to do it gonna hold probe right this thing is balanced to work on its back somewhere there's a scroll over saber last yes that hopefully yeah they go wouldn't keep its back up again it's really lot left in this thing okay our purposes above it 76 and that's a pretty good looking have to be we got we've got enough we've got enough to circularize I'm making a quick save so it's looking good we're not at the dog house yet but it's looking promising German Bob looking suitably delighted there and we have reached we have crossed the border of space so the world's media Roger take some photos now there's a little photo there nice little photo there okay I'm genuinely excited so euphoric right now so it's not an ideal orb as you can see we're very much 45 degrees to the equator but I don't care [Music] and we are bingo with you ready to touch that and continue of God bloody hell [Music] so I have to keep the throttle nice and low come on we're nearly entered the atmosphere again there we go we did it and Java Dyron Bob putting suitably delighted there [Music] it's just the most ridiculous way to do a quick spacewalk [Music] bill Carlin is going to inspect the heat-resistant tiles make sure the safe for re-entry after that is pretty flawless I see nothing wrong with this vessel so we only have 78 meters per second remain your good really safe there actually so how much would it take to deorbit ourself oh we got loads if y'all haven't well it's not gonna say very much at all is it so it's gonna put us there so we want to ideally burn from here to get ourselves to the KSC in fact no because remember this thing breaks super fast doesn't it we're gonna wait for kerbin to rotate back around before we consider LAN I mean I guess I could have gone for the desert Airport but whatever is too late now I reckon my need to make one more Robert okay [Music] and we are at Bingo fuel where's my flying helmet no we're going to under sin teresting that we have oxidizer that was the vermin with the declaration I have to use that that's interesting we actually add more delta-v than wheat I initially thought we had so let's do a glide test can it get to that lamb master so we have an idea of how far this thing can theoretically glide unpowered right now it's very very Philippi I'm not optimistic about getting this thing back to the curve with space under then it can't really travel any kind of distance kind of it's just too terrible okay so you probably wanted the the orbit before the one we actually went for we might have more Delta V than we thought we heard yeah look at our Delta V is shooting up a hundred fifteen so know why so 115 wow I feel like a millionaire nobody really knew that was going to burn expend all my fuel okay let's just make a quick saving case this is successful reentry if I mess it up front K nerds will leave inactive until we need them and then which is going to go so we should those metal plates have very high heat tolerance I'm just watching the now cooler and what I could do is aim for the island there's the peninsula I could aim for the island runway over for those who don't know there's another runway just on this island here all right firing we might be able to get there that was close though we got close so I think with a bit of tweaking that reentry path is a good one attempt number two again this thing back to the curb with Space Center all the island runway in fact what if I just did hi progressively five good luck that's putting a little bit too much isn't it especially given I'm seeing some flames lap the side of this thing I'm pretty great they're still fairly high in the atmosphere hopefully it's very happy to see the flames though because I only see everything is red to me some of my hobbies in KSP Cocoa's face room just taking little photos as I go along so if you ever see like any of my videos the UI suddenly disappears because I'm taking a picture come on just keeping a really close watch on that temperature gauge [Music] this is a much better trajectory for the island runway I don't really care which run where we land on as long as we land on a runway and I think I'm feeling confident oh no the rolls are starting but look how close we are to the island this time it's just that weight of that vector is just dragging this thing come on just pitch down a little bit liberal with the quicksave spam I think in this circumstance it's somewhat acceptable to rely heavily on quicksaves come on baby come up oh god it's flipping I'm losing it I'm Elisabeth captain oh my god this is close this is close disable auto SS here we go is it just me all those wheels a bit have they always been always pretty cuz the thing we own the time yeah whatever I don't care everyone's a little bit tilted aren't they or something with that so I know we might fall short and got a point progress pick up some speed come on baby yes this is like the most anxious I've ever been for like getting back to a runway with us SS do not sto like an ass face play space play and we lost too much speed whatever just see if we can land anywhere yeah we lost him at horizontal speeds but worst comes to worst our pilots have survived huh yeah it's just like a Mad Max Reliant Robin now isn't it see from this height it kind of looked like we were going to be able to make it but it was not the case hopefully reloading might have fixed the bend again I'm gonna pick up lots of speed okay we're actually just I've gotta overshoot it now so and the very last second with a pitch up don't look at a keep an eye on vertical speed you see Oh No yes yes well we're on the runway sir we are on the runway so it's not good enough we need to survive in one piece for this thing to be a fully reusable spacecraft but now I'm in a good position I can easily just really do the landing again and again it's annoying about those wheels that wasn't there I reckon part the problem is the wheels okay came down a bit too hard bit too hard and they're kind of stopping us too quickly when flipping gently does it gently does it part of the issue is it there's those reels peeler God what is that it's blowing up it is difficult in every single way you could rely on wake up it's a car so it's really really heavy somebody who quit somebody somebody who's spying like power washer I have the power as the repressor to make you really begin to make you get up when you got a three-time loser that's my wife no wires go see what she will you think with yourself when you want to quit and give up yo that is valid you need that that lift that you need to get to the nectar your why do the job right or don't do it at all that's the same person who has his hand raised or the podium point then say mother it's not easy if it were in fact easy everybody to do it but it is serious you'll go all out we're about glucose every time as a rocket is the most awful shape it could ever be but I thought the Robin was a good place to start because it's plenty of certainly I think it's gonna be possible to understand is look at the happiest boy when they don't have [Music] oh my god fiction it's tearing return a certain if neither cold poverty managed to call sick to subpoena Bobby oh my God look at that you proceed come on Ultron [Music] [Music] we did it oh my god even the wheels are intact well they're completely bent so now let's see if we can drive yes what I might actually do is quit the game now and then see if reloading the game fixes the wheel problem aha the wheels are fixed and so we can officially say [Music] I mean come on look at it okay I'm amazed this thing not only landed in one piece but also on a runway with the wheels intact oh it is just absurd but there we go so that's a happier way to end this video rather than just it's kind of all bent out of shape but I guess that would be quite fitting cuz that's probably what it would have happened to a Reliant Robin if one were to do this in real life well when Top Gear did it the Reliant Robin was in certainly far worse condition than this so there we are I'm gonna show this video to NASA now because I feel like I've just come up with the the solution to a lack of a space shuttle so yeah hope you enjoyed this video somewhat different change of pace to my standard Kerbal videos and obviously hope you enjoy the rest of green harvest when that eventually drops so I haven't got anything else planned for an outro so goodbye [Music]
