I've spent a good chunk of time over the past six months playing Kerbal Space Program 2 and recording my experiences For Your Entertainment but I think it's no secret that Kerbal Space Program 2's release has not been the smoothest and many of us look back at Kerbal Space Program one with a newfound appreciation but just how different are the two games really to find out I decided to do two back-to-back man missions one in Kerbal Space Program two and one in Kerbal Space Program one with mods that's right it's gonna be a classic head-to-head challenge which is the better game modded ksb1 Oil stock ksp2 we're going to start off in ksb2 with the construction of the Man rocket now uh when it came to the design and construction of the man rockets for this video I decided to set two rules for myself first of all the rocket needs to be capable of Landing four kerbals on the surface of the man and safely return them back to kerbin and the rockets need to be an Apollo style can configuration in that we have a command pod that stays in Muna orbit while a separate Lander goes down to the surface does all the surface activities on the surface and then returns to the Mother Ship which then heads back to kerbin and you know lands the kerbils there safely and as you can see construction of the ksp2 Rockets coming along very well I have now completed construction of the spacecraft portion of the rocket now we need to just build the big dumb booster underneath it now I initially decided to just have a single stack rocket with no strap on boosters because this isn't a very heavy payload a single stack should be absolutely fine but before I filmed the final construction of the rocket I did create this test article which is essentially the same craft and it doesn't get off the pad at all in fact it had horrendous thrust weight ratio but even when I added two Clydesdale boosters it still couldn't get off the pad and bear in mind those are four Mainsail engines at the bottom of that stack so it should easily have enough power to get off the launch pad so I figured well hey this is just the test clearly something has bugged and is a Miss hope when I rebuilt this craft for the video and launch it this bug whatever it is won't happen and it will all work so let's cut forward to the rocket that you saw me building at the beginning of this video this is the final version all SLS style let's see if it gets off the pad foreign Pad but in my defense let's look at the engineers report it had a Thrust weight ratio of 1.594 which is like it is easily enough to get off the launch pad at a fair old Pace so clearly something was amiss I don't know what made me do this but I just decided hey why don't I just try taking the engine plate off the bottom of the rocket and just put the Mainsail engines directly onto the tank itself let's see how this changes things oh yeah so now as you can see the rocket performs uh actually it performs too well uh it's basically almost a single stage to orbit I guess if you don't count the solid rocket Motors it can almost get to orbit just using the core stage not even needing the upper stages so clearly this is now very much Overkill so I decided to roll back to my previous plan of just having a Delta IV style single stack rocket and there we are uh it works perfectly so I guess that's kind of a feature of ksp2 in that there'll be lots of unexplainable unexpected bugs that might prevent you from building the rocket that you wanted to admittedly this has never happened to me before where the thrust weight ratio has been well I guess it wasn't calculated wrong but it just performed wrongly like the engines weren't outputting the right amount of sauce has this happened to anyone else this does not bode well for my future in this game I'm still discovering new bugs that might mess everything up but yeah that this is a feature uh in ksp2 that I didn't have that I didn't encounter when building my rocket in kerb or Space Program one now when it comes to rockets in ksp2 I may have mentioned one or two times uh that they are a bit wobbly and in to make the competition Fair the rocket that I build in Kerbal Space Program one will not be using Auto strut I will just be using regular strut and that's it actually so just there's another reason to stick around eh get that view of retention up all that good shebang make sure you like the video down below as well if you are enjoying the experience so far I make ksp2 videos every Saturday sometimes so for your enjoyment I hope you yep that's smash the Subscribe Bell that's my upset my YouTuber peace now here's another thing that's unique to ksp2 and that is wait for it yes bugged fairings uh they don't deploy properly so there's a thing that you won't be seeing in the ksp-1 version of this video but not to rag on ksp2 too too much you know I think the visuals especially during this launch sequence are brilliant and I love the fact that you can repaint the rocket uh Parts looks brilliant I think uh at least for the spacecraft ksp2 is definitely the better looking game now I haven't actually tried this out in a while and in retrospect perhaps I should have tried this before filming this Mission and that is that you can't use a docking port in the same way you can use a decoupler bit like you can in ksp1 if you attach a docking port to just a non-docking port piece in the VAB you can still undock that docking port as if it were like a decoupler essentially but you can't do that in ksp2 at least you couldn't in previous builds I don't know if they patched it in yet so I had to use a stack separatron piece to separate my Lander from the mothership and that meant that it was all stuck between the two vessels that uh destroyed in the tracking station I tried quicksaving and quick loading to see if that would just get rid of it but it didn't so that was why that little sequence of events happened oh but look at the uh the fairing for that uh Rhino engine has reappeared a bit weird doesn't really matter because we're going to be ditching that stage now that we have our spaceship in its final configuration and we can activate Aura extendable nozzle engine is it the trumpet or the tuber I don't know it's it's a wind instrument doesn't really matter oh look at that plume uh it was quite jarring going back to ksp1 after filming this and having uh the uh the engine plumes in that game and I am using the waterfall mod as well so it goes to show just how good the rocket plumes are in ksp2 you know credit where credit is due the art style and sound design I know everyone agree is I think very good very good anyway we've created our maneuver plan so not much else to do other than perform our burn that's gonna get us an encounter with the mun now at this point guys I should point out that I did have another bug happened to me I can't remember when exactly I noticed when playing this Mission but I realized that the game had bugged out kind of once again see ksp2 has this feature that's not actually very helpful at all in that it will auto populate your rocket with crew if it can't detect any crew on board but it will sometimes do this even when there is crew on board and it will continually do this as you reload rockets and test launch and things it will still try and stick kerbals in compartments where you didn't want them so when I built this rocket I put Tim C Kerman Valentina Kerman jaredi Kerman Bill Cameron and Bob Kerman in the spacecraft the idea being that one Cobble would stay on the mothership while the other four descend down to the surface but at some point the game added hengen women you see her face uh in the top right of the screen it added hengan to the crew roster unbeknownst to me which means that we're not going to be able to get all of our kerbals home because the re-entry module only has five seats and we now have six kerbals on board and just to prove this wasn't my fault because I must admit even I was like oh maybe I did just make a mistake I've got to show you the footage of me building this rocket before the first launch so this is what it was still in its SLS style configuration in there I had I added the correct number of kerbals and no more so obviously during my reverting back to VAB and making changes to the rocket the game just added a sixth Kerbal to it so yeah I really wish the game just didn't do that and just trusted me that I knew what I was doing and had already selected the number of cardboards that I wanted and populated the crew modules that I wanted populating and left Vons empty that I wanted leaving empty ah real shame so guys there's gonna have to be a sequel to this video which we uh rescue one of the kerbals from the surface of the mum we're gonna have to abandon them there no as well when you undock vessels in ksb2 it just causes one of them to spin out of control erratically defying physics at least the physics that I understand but yeah we're gonna have to strand one of our kerbals on the surface of the mun who will it be vote now on your phones make sure you stick around the video uh comment below take a guess who do you think is going to get abandoned in this video anyway here I thought I'd made a mistake watch the footage carefully as you can see I'm now attempting to point retro Ray to form a landing burn but it's happening really slowly so I figured oh I guess the Talk inside of this command modules uh SAS unit is very low and you're actually supposed to use a dedicated SAS unit when using this particular Command Module because it turns way too slowly otherwise hence why I had to use a puff of the poodle engines to get this thing oriented in the right direction ready for our Landing burn but this is actually not the case this is another bug that's happened the SAS just was really really not very powerful because when we do our Ascent back to moon orbit it it handles like a dream it's got really really powerful SAS either that was a bug and it shouldn't have really powerful SAS or this was a bug where it's supposed to have a bit more SAS power than basically none at all which is uh how I would describe the speed at which it rotated uh before I did that puff of the poodle engine but here we are on the surface of the man we can get all four of our kerbals out on Eva plan to flag and and do nothing else because there is no science in this game but I want to give another point to ksp2 here I find it's much easier to land on celestial bodies because they're nowhere near as rough and the surface is nowhere near as undulating as it is in KSP one and I think this is more realistic there's a lot more big flat areas where you can build big spaces and stuff I guess because of the fact that a core feature of this game which uh doesn't exist yet is Colony building which necessitates kind of big open spaces so I really really like that it's much less stressful and overall I find it a bit more fun to land on the surface of celestial bodies in Kerbal Space Program too but were you watching closely yes the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed what I called my flag site that's the name of the Kerrville that's going to get abandoned here and it's a it's a hearken back to when I first did my very first first ever man mission in Kerbal Space Program 2 back when I played the pre-release in Amsterdam where I I think I had the same bug in fact where the ship had Auto populated with one too many kerbals so I had to leave one on the surface of the mum so I asked my colleague who was playing the game next to me Billy wind Jr who should I strand on the surface of the Moon and uh well right Billy I got myself in a pickle here I brought one too many curveballs I need to abandon one on the surface of the bun usually it's built you're right you're the one that said we're gonna send fill out look he's he's got no idea he's got no idea he's never getting back off we just don't like you very much so it's not funny so yes history hath repeat itself I once again was strand Bill Kerman on the surface of the man and I still really like the fact that you know Billy win Jr zero hesitation before condemning Bill Kerbal uh to an eternity on the surface of the Moon and in that case it really was an eternity I did ask the staff hey could I get a copy of my save file so I could do a blunderbuss Mission and rescue Bill Kerbal and they they said no they couldn't do that so now I have the opportunity to do a spiritual Rescue of Bill from my first ever mun Landing in ksp2 Mission uh it's like it's slightly rhyme so I can I can do this so maybe maybe not next week I'll keep the content somewhat very but at some point I'll rescue Bill Kerbal I keep calling him Bill Kerbal now because Billy Gordon that uh Bill Kerman from the surface of the mun but yeah I do still have my ESA early access event footage from that fateful day in which I got to play Kerbal Space Program 2 before anyone else did aside from I guess the other YouTubers and reviewers that were there I don't know maybe we found at some point to uh look back at that footage and compare it you know to how the game looks now maybe when the game's got a few more features in retrospect you know when the game's got a few more features a few more performance enhancements you know maybe in like three years from now we can look back at that footage and say ah isn't it just so quaint that we we put up with that I look I watched the footage back again recently and I was like oh yeah there's a lot of stuff that I didn't realize how much it would haunt me for example how wobbly the rocket was on takeoff I kind of put it down too at the time like oh well um I was really kind of in the zone to be honest I wasn't really having fun when I was doing those missions so basically I don't know if I ever told this story on this channel but whatever it's all like fairly nothing's really interesting is happening now is it's just a redock and return back to kerbin but yeah I knew in advance that we would have about three hours to just play ksp2 and I was like I'm not going in to have fun or enjoy myself I'm going in there for a mission to make money on the internet so I was like I gotta pump out three videos so I like took like screenshots of like rockets that I knew worked like just rocket designs that I built previously in KSP one that I knew worked I literally put the screenshots on my phone I sat down at my desk at the esa event next to Red Bull with my phone out and just like I was like trying to slap the rocket together as fast as possible that was probably why I made a few building errors and why I missed a few components because I was literally just trying to get things done as fast as possible because I wasn't sure if the game would perform differently or another bug or just keep messing up because I was so nervous so uh yeah that was like my uh my experience of playing the game at the esa event it was very very uh stressful but I think it paid off in the end I got a nice Apollo style moon mission out of it which is what I really really wanted to get couldn't get the journey Mission done because uh I don't remember that was such a long time ago guys six months ago you know who remembers that far in the past not me apparently um but yeah that's I guess that's all I have to say about that really now we can get Jebediah Kerman timsey Kerman Valentina Kerman and hengan Kerman back to the surface of cabin before of course proceeding with our Kerbal Space Program One mission so yeah that's a I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys think of how that mission compares to to this Mission which is obviously like I say in its end stages now we're gonna form our Escape burn hope I had another little visual glitch just there with that extendable nozzle engine that I forgot the name of uh we could form our mooner Escape burn that's gonna get us on a curb and encounter not just a curbing encounter but a Kerman atmosphere encounter so we want to drop our periopsis to be nice and low really really low in fact because of course thermal is not yet in the game real shame that's not going to make it into patch four although patch 4 has been delayed so maybe it will but I doubt it very much uh here's me uh failing to encounter curb and I was getting it trigger happy with time War but I kept on time warping through kerbin so I have warped around a couple of times but now we are entering the atmosphere and I guess you know not having thermal you know re-entry heating or you know the thermal effects themselves is a good thing because I guess the heat shield isn't very optimal on this craft because as you can see kind of there's two command boards right so that we have five seats we've got the Apollo style one on the top then we've got the Lander can one which as you can see has a flared base which actually extends beyond the area of the heat shield so you know maybe the craft wouldn't have been safe I should have used a bigger heat shield maybe that's a change I can learn from when we do this in ksp1 where re-entreating is very much a thing as you can see one of the parachutes didn't deploy just there isn't that weird I tried deploying it in the parts manager and it just didn't do anything so that was a one final bug to wrap up the Kerbal Space Program 2 man Mission but you know gotta just draw attention to this beautiful environment that we've landed ourselves in Andrew the appearance of the the craft is ksb2 you know it's a beautiful game it's a beautiful game but is it as beautiful as modded Kerbal Space Program one let's find out out in this the second part of the video oh doesn't the Nostalgia hit you like a freight train well I mean I guess I say Nostalgia because like I haven't played this game in a while but I guess I think most players are still playing cardboard Space Program one so I don't know what to make of that statement but here we are building a pretty similar craft to what we did in ksp2 so again we have a Lander that Sports space for four kerbals to get to the surface of the mon as well as an Apollo style command pod that has seats for five kerbals uh you know so one can stay in orbit around the man and uh here we are basically just building it in the Vehicle Assembly Building and doing this immediately after doing my ksp2 mission I must stress guys as soon as I finished doing that kspd mission I immediately launched ksb1 so I could really get a sense of just how different the two games were I started missing a few aspects of ksp2's Builder now don't get me wrong I'm much quicker at building stuff in KSP one really because I've got so many more hours in this game compared to the sequel but just little things like being able to scroll up and down the rocket and using the middle Mouse button in ksb2 just feels a bit nicer just pressing Ctrl a to just select the entire rocket and move it around rather than find the root piece there are things about ksp1 though that are better for example the fairing system it's just so much easier to build bearings in Kerbal Space Program one I just being able to right click Parts having to wait seven centuries for the past manager to appear That's nice as well here we are on the launch pad by the way throttling up the engine and taking off yeah the uh the launches don't hit quite the same do they now have been spoiled by the visuals of ksp2 and of course the sound design of ksp2 but hey modded ksp-1 still looks really really good I've got the waterfall mod for the engines I've got the newly updated like this week it was updated black racks uh true volumetric Cloud environmental visual enhancements planets Planet shine scatterer I think that's it I'm trying to think I think that's it whatever but yeah it looks beautiful and of course it runs really well I mean ksp2 runs pretty well on my PC but my PC is not a normal PC it's got a 4090 as the graphics card which is like not a normal consumer graphics card so I guess one of the big big advantages for ksb1 over ksp2 for most people without being performance isn't something that I really relate to I don't know how I can say that without sounding like a massive douche I'm just saying you know performance was not isn't too much of an issue for me anymore in ksp2 now one thing that I notice with ksp-1 and indeed the discourse around ksp-1 and ksp2 is the differences in the flight UI it's very very Stark and I feel like most people on the internet prefer the UI of ksp-1 but for me I vastly prefer the UI of ksp2 except for the parts manager just want to make that very very clear I'd love to just right click parts and just get a menu up for that specific part but for like the nav ball and having all the altitude information and apple apps's information all that around the nav pool in one area of the screens you're able to flick from the bottom to the top to the sides it's just I really really like the UI of ksb2 there are like there are things that need to be improved I think the parts manager definitely needs to be optimized and I would still love contextual menus for individual Parts if I were to right click individual Parts but for the most part like the flight information and all that do like I do like esp2 but um the Aesthetics of ksb1 is definitely something to be acknowledged you know a lot of people like the more car opportunity aesthetic of the ksb1 visuals I don't say card Call of Duty sounds like a negative adjective but I don't mean it as a negative now one thing I do like about the ksp-1 UI is that the Kerbal portraits down there it shows the kerbals in ksp2 it will show the kerbals but it also shows empty seats which I guess is kind of nice but it only shows three portraits at a time and the game will just pick and choose which seats are being shown so if for example you've not got kerbals in what the game is assigned to be the primary command pod or whatever system it uses to determine this I don't actually know you could potentially just have three empty seats as the default portraits at the top of the screen you have to like scroll through to find the portraits of the curb was you still only get like one curveball and then two empty seats next to them it's kind of weird it'd be nice if the game actually just showed all of the kerbals first and then did all the empty seats and broke cores Etc and speaking of the curbles I had sort of the opposite problem in this Mission so when I did the ksp2 mission I brought too many pebbles in the ksp-1 mission I brought too few carbos that was my fault 100 I just I just added all of this I'm so used to now they're being five stock default kerbals uh rather than four because obviously ksp2 you got Jeb Bob Bill Val and Tim in ksb1 you just got Jeb Bob Bill and Val but I'm just now so used to there being five stock default kerbals when I was populated in this craft I was like yeah just put all the default cables in we haven't got a recruit anymore because we've got five and then I was like oh yeah I'm an idiot I guess I I in my defense I just played ksp2 before I did this Mission so I'll still kind of in ksp2 mode so I'm just gonna put that I'm gonna put it down to that to that psychological phenomenon that I've just made up here's a little thing that you can't do in ksp2 though right we can see inside the craft I mean I suppose you can right some of the vessels or some of the command pods I should say have transparent glass but not all of them and not this specific command pod in ksb2 the little Mark II Lander can or was it called in case between just the medium-sized land can whatever that hasn't got transparent glass but yeah one of the things I wanted to compare when playing ksp2 and ksp1 back to back was the visuals and I must say I think the mun from a distance in ksp2 I think it just edges out ahead there's not a lot in it I think in terms of beautifulness um it's a modded ksp-1 and you know ksp2 but I think ksp2 from a distance the planets do look much better but when it comes to up close I really don't know I feel like at the mid distance it could go either way depending on which region of which planet you're landing on I suppose when it comes to ksp2 but when we get down to the surface of ksp-1 thanks to the oh I forgot when I was talking about what mods I've got earlier uh I've also got this The Parallax mod which adds all these rocks and stuff uh this makes it like up close now now we're down on the surface it's like there's there's no contest is there I feel like ksp1 just looks so much better now obviously ksp2 is Early Access gosh don't we know that so you know there's definitely scope to improve the visuals in ksp2 and really I think the devs should be focusing on the uh the other stuff in case we do these work uh so there's definitely room for a case to improve and of course mod support will improve with Kerbal Space Program 2 over time so games links can put his talents to use in ksp2 so that we could even get Parallax in ksp2 at some point down the line wouldn't that be amazing but right now we've got Parallax in ksp1 only and goodness me it's beautiful as we get our kerbals out there and of course all these rocks and Pebbles and Stones yeah they've all got Collision which is great there's a few stones and rocks on the surface of planets in ksp2 they ain't got Collision right now apparently they will at some point but not right now and there are the kerbals out there on Eva and another thing the cables have got headlamps frustratingly their suits have got headlamps in ksp2 but they don't work but they do work in KSP one I had just a little clock wipe just there because I didn't want to I think you guys would want to watch me waddle all the kerbals back onto the craft and yes I did say all of the kerbals because again we didn't bring too many but we did bring too few we've not got a Kerbal on the mother ship to help us dock so we can't do the loud lazy method of docking uh I didn't want to get a kerbil out on Eva because I feel like I should punish myself for making this silly mistake so we're gonna dock to the Mothership just using the Lander and what makes this a bit more difficult is that the Lander doesn't have any RCS thrusters uh only the mother ship has RCS thrusters so we're gonna have to do some creative maneuvering to get ourselves docked so make sure you stay tuned I look forward to that I know the video is like almost over now isn't it so it seems silly to bring up your attention at this point you guys have made it this far you've been the end I hope and I don't you know massively go off the rails and ruin it all here we are you know time warping up to our encounter now I must apologize um ever since I upgraded my monitors to 4K uh the UI in ksp1 and I guess also kind of in ksp2 is a bit rubbish the text is really really small I'm uploading these videos in 4k to be fair but I'm guessing most people just watch these on like their phones probably you YouTube today Etc uh so you might not be my struggle to read the text so I really really need to go in and just try and figure out how to make KSP one uh readable for like 720p even though the footage is at 4K I'm sure there's probably a UI scale option there now I kind of cheated the uh the mothership was spinning so I just hit Time Warp when it was an optimal orientation so that I could dock a bit more easily but we still have to realign the Landers that our docking ports are you know somewhat aligned with each other so I'm just doing a few little sort of vertical Puffs getting ourselves visually aligned slow laying down as well pointing a little at retrograde and then I think that's a that's an overall fairly optimal Dock and there we are boof aligned thank you magnets for saving the day once again and now we can transfer our crew back onto the mothership and I actually prefer the crew transfer system in ksp2 and that shouldn't be a controversial point because it is much better than the one in ksb1 we've gotta right-click each individual like crew compartment this is where things like the parts manager is better there's a thing called Kerbal manager in ksp2 we just press it and it just shows all the command pods and all the curbles you can just drag and drop them between them dead easy love it that's what I mean the parts manager is good for certain instances but I feel like it shouldn't be the only option what do you guys think let me know in the comments down below but there we are approaching our Final Approach and remember how I mentioned earlier that I feel like the uh the heat shield I used for the crafting ksp2 was insufficient I decided to evolve the design a little bit for the ksp-1 version of The Craft and I use the big inflatable heat shield because of course in ksb1 we actually do have to worry about deadly re-entry so that's what we're gonna oh kind of sketchy just there but we were fine but yeah as the uh video wraps up I I don't really know what to think now I thought it was gonna be a night and day ksb1 is the best and it was a lot more enjoyable to do this mission in ksb1 because there was basically no bugs and the game just runs a bit smoother and I said earlier there's not a huge performance difference for me but there is still a performance difference and it's just a bit more consistent it's more predictable and designing the rocket like what you've just watched was the maiden flight of this I didn't do any test flights and test launches that failed like I did in case you want Oh landed back in the heat shield so yeah I think ksb1 was a much more enjoyable experience for me but at the same time you know Kerber Space Program 2 it has all the right foundations and I'm hoping that as the patches roll out and as the road map starts being progressed along things will get better and it will surpass ksp-1 but for right now I think ksp1 is the smoother experience and it was quicker for me so to give you the real times including all the building and testing and flying and all that with these two missions in total the ksp-2 mission was 1 hour 16 minutes ksp-1 Mission which again includes all the flying and building Etc was 48 minutes that's the difference of 28 minutes granted as I am a professional player of these games I might be a bit quicker than a normal player would be but there you go there's the times that that means anything but that's the end of the video guys I hope you enjoyed this experience I certainly found it interesting and I hope to see you in the next video
