[Music] going mean it so I just found out as a manager about how empty okay though December 2018 here we are last time we did this I think it's been two years which totally depresses me but it's because we're traveling and having stomach flu that we can't get together all the time you look there it's a rough life those of you who don't know Sydney does this I think you're the only person I know that commits to this insane knit miss NIT miss extravaganza okay so before we start tell us what you're wearing okay I am wearing part of my Pendleton suit because I have a very deep and unhealthy obsession with Pendleton so plaid pants which one's the I'm Tiffany yeah this is unplanned but I'm like I knew I liked this I wanna end it she did I just didn't know because you have a blazer yeah yeah yeah same I actually have two of them adorable it's a problem I always a Pendleton Pendleton well I just say it really fast okay I'm just saying so people know yeah Pendleton yeah I think that's how it's about the deep yeah yeah okay and um the top is a variation on the flax sweater by Tim hand knits I just didn't do the side garter stitch like it has like a little row like a ridge of yeah of garter and I just didn't do that and then I shortened it this is forever old and probably one of my most worn like holiday time sweaters yeah I like sitting next to sitting I feel like it makes me look better what I need to have my updo though I'm really disappointed in my hair right now in this frame I don't know why but I think the gods of marvelous mrs. Mazal like shine down upon me this week because my hair I've been having so many issues I have a MIDI cut which means that my hair actually does that and all these pieces that are long come to the front and it's just very challenging yeah deal with but hair this week is nice John okay you have any of a vintage brooch yes I just got this two days ago at my favorite little shop in Carroll Gardens and this belt is belting is that a vintage look on the waist yeah like if I have my waist covered by my knit hem I guess like yeah then I'll belt it okay now should I invest in a 50s pointy bra for this sweater be honest yes okay so tell us the plan for this year go okay and just in review you start knit miss around I start knit miss on November 1st Oh November furnace I'm a crazy person that's right because it was after Halloween or it's after Halloween you have to have Halloween knitting is its own name / Rhinebeck knitting so yeah I have to get stuff done for Rhinebeck and then I have like a one-week window where I can knit something spooky and then it's Christmas time thank you thank goodness I'm Mexican October yeah it was in December yeah you couldn't I wouldn't sleep I remember I think it was on your Instagram feed it was like there was a Halloween photo on and the next day I feel like I hid the Grinch or something right or some cartoon like John Smith cartoon I was like oh there she goes no and that's it I feel like on Instagram lately I've been veering towards my stories a lot more than like this is day-to-day where my brains out because it takes me more time to kind of figure out what I want to actually post but my stories I just it's free for all yeah that's like my real everyday life yeah okay yeah okay so tell us about the plan this year yeah plan this year so last year my number was 33 and by mid-january I had got to 27 and so I told myself I cannot go over 27 mm and my goal was to try to hit somewhere like in the 2223 range I ended up hitting 27 as my number of people to knit for I am proud to say that that number has not grown because it almost always does and I add people on she's only like 20 so what you're young not that young the more people she meets and the more life she lifts can you imagine mine it miss at like 45 I'm just I'm putting myself in your shoes I'm fast-forwarding 15 years and going this is not a good for you Sydney oh it does not okay keep going I'm sorry to interrupt it can't help it okay um okay so 27 27 and I've had a few people like go off the list and I've had a few people go on but the number has stuck to like in the 26 27 so this is very good I am super behind just good ends up today which is er 7 yeah then Y and Ferb um I yeah I don't know what it is because last year I was finishing my master's degree I know I was working 30 hours a week at purl Soho and probably the busiest yarn shop in America right now and trying to maintain a semi social life and Christmas like activities life yeah and I don't know how I got so much done cuz this year I'm like I'm working full-time at girl and I don't know if it's just like the tiredness from the day or that I'm old now all of a sudden I'm telling you you are old and in one year I have aged deeply um yeah but I have I have six seven at the count six things totally dying complete I have actually already gifted - okay which is good and this weekend basically just to boost my own confidence I'm trying to get all of my kind of quick like a hat little scarf thanks done done - just knock them off the list the major thing this year is that I have a total of seven adult garments so that's a lot that's a lot in you know eight weeks time although your rules are you can go beyond to the Christmas yes day yes I can I what's the final final like I feel like I I usually give up at the end of January if I'm like I don't get stuff done that time it's okay and last year the unfortunate thing that happened is I had one really major project that had a lot of finishing work to it and I was gonna basically be cutting out somebody's name in felt letters and sewing it on to the front of a sweater cool and it just was like too much and I was so ready to be done with nimis that it didn't get done it's on this year's list to get done okay the recipient is a sweet angel so she was like didn't care at all you can you can put it forward to the next nimis this is this is probably the first year I've done that yeah I try not to do that and I try to kind of start fresh every year but my goal this year is to not do that at all I'm kind of to have an end date to have everything done and not feel like things are still on my needles okay so let's talk about the land the plan what do we have you wanna show or they want like say it out loud and then show or talk and show and I can cuz you already make like a pink sweater I made yeah those are what they've already given them those have been gifted I can I can send you photos you could post so we can see okay tell us about that pink sweater yeah for so that was kind of that was the really fun piece of knit miss so far my dad and my now stepmom got married on Thanksgiving morning and what I wanted to do was make them matching house sweaters like just cozy warm kind of like chunky bulky merino sweaters um they my family is really weird put that there right now let's start there um and they call each other pink heart and black heart are like their little nicknames so with the sweaters I knit sonja's to be pink with a black heart and my dad's to be black with a pink heart mm-hmm they turned out really cute and the thing that was happening on my Instagram was that I challenged myself to knit a sweater in three days from start to finish right yeah they don't realize it's three I knew it was that was eight but no sounds crazy it was but it was really it all night hey I had very late nights and luckily I mean the yarn was like well Pierre so that's good that's a big secret you have to understand yeah figure they are in the path to the project I'm a true it's very true yeah she'll do like stuff on twos yeah but that's for her vintage patterns but only city should be knitting anyway nobody get yeah well I mean it's just that's all Coco it's I respect all the respected me all the respect by love we are knitters I just I it's hard for me to get on board with that I well because the reason is because it's not as functional what you knit you can wear affair very easily and you look in splattering and so that's why it's important if you want to actually wear your knit to really think about it but if you just want to knit and finish something come in a bulky okay so we're gonna get a picture right here yes a black car pink car here it is black car pink card they loved it they loved it it's actually the first time I've really made something for my dad because my dad is for lack of a better term like a glam rock dude who wears eyeliner and like black all the time and doesn't really isn't like a hand it's kind of guy so it's been really hard to figure out something to make frozen with that vibe yeah but he also can totally be like a cozy homebody so I thought something like a house sweater were they're both just gonna be at home in the winter it's perfect that was perfect yeah so that was really great I got the sweater done in three days that was I said that challenge for myself and I kind of was like lol Sydney come on this isn't gonna happen but it did yeah which is great now how did they feel about getting their Christmas present so early so here's the thing with that they're technically the wedding gifts got they're not their Christmas gifts I'm not going to knit projects for either of them for Christmas but because the knitting felt in knit miss which for me is like gift knitting see yes I count it as knit miss Agra I think it was right that sounds right thank you okay Shay so what else so you're left to my lab the big thing that's happening right now is that I am trying so hard to get all of my international gift stuff oh yes good idea because my other family lives in Germany me and I now knit for the whole family and she now has two boys two young little kiddos so the boys are getting matching sweaters this is the year of matching sweaters this is I'm doing three sets of matching of it I think we should all be twins with all the people all the time let's just I'm just gonna knit matching everything for all my people yeah and make them stand together and they have a picture and have a picture like it knit miss its 2019 yeah that's up yeah that's happening so yes I don't know if you can see like the detail work and I'm gonna pull out oh sweet so this is from 1950s pattern oh my god she's gonna love it and then this is for the other one older that one's still in progress such a great color isn't that great there's a two together yes so the long term plan is to get their sweaters done and then they're each gonna have hats with like the opposite color pom pom yes so they're extra moon mm-hmm that little pop and will these have buttons they will have buttons buttons TVD I love this and this yarn is miss Babs from right when I was riding backyard I would not have it set that my guests are late yeah because I just think of Miss Babs is all the crazy indeed I stuff I don't I don't always think of her as having these beautiful solids but these are yeah I totally I go for her solids every year because you can they're like five hundred and sixty yards you have without a baby garment or even the olive one is like a two year old and I'll have enough it's awesome when you went to Rhinebeck for shopping did you have these projects on your yes okay because I I made a I made a sweater for my godson last year out of Miss Babs and he loved it and it worked really well it was really nice to work with so I knew I wanted to use that yarn again so okay and then I just finished this week these are like kind of house wash boot socks for my best friend's husband because he secretly not so secretly hinted that he would love some hand that socks so I brought heard that and a lot of that those got done and then are these DQ me yeah this is hazelnuts DK which has a little bit of nylon in it which is awesome yeah I love Rico socks yeah they're just really cozy they feel really good and my vintage bestie she is she's a mom she's the mom she's Sarah she's all over my Instagram always she is getting the same sweater I made for myself for right back oh that has like a it has this like deep bib like yeah hella me thing and then big collar here and then it has these like hem sleeves and they're puffed it's very cute and I asked her every year like what sort of style thing do you want she's like honestly I want that sweater like okay I could do that and so how do you I would feel so intimidated about making a sweater for someone else's body how do you do that you just get their size yeah hit it yeah I mean I don't try on my sweaters a lot but I've knit so many now like I know that that's gonna fit me yeah and it Dean saying absolutely yeah it is still somewhat of a guessing game but I'm a lot of my friends are also in the vintage community and just as part of the vintage community like I kind of I have all of my friends measure yeah because no it's not because you have to know like there's a big difference between here and here yep but when you wear vintage it's all about negative ease whoa oh my god I learned that from this sweater yeah could that was the one really I would really want to do dirty negative yeah negative mommy tight yeah show your lady curves I should have a girdle too huh I need a girdle and with mighty bra Sydney wow I can do better okay what else um but yeah because I have those measurements on of things like I don't feel too intimidated right yeah yeah I feel less afraid the other thing I have to show is just a cute little like keyhole scar keyhole scarf Ascot but this is honor notice is that I know what this is it's called um Miss Marple yeah yeah yeah the Miss Marple scarf yeah there is one on so I'm cute Ramaiah this making this is so much fun and it has the little hello this is so much fun to make I thought yeah they're really easy I'm doing a few of them this year I have another one on the needles with a different like stitch pattern not on this for this is for a vintage friend Leah and she's going to get little matching mittens as well is this some pro so of that cash that cash Marina this is from purl Soho it's the worsted twist okay so it's all merino but it feels nice yeah it's early thought I love that color too and she's getting matching gloves just getting matching mittens mittens yes now will you cut the mittens if at the end you're not you're not you know enough time no just give this no it has to be stuff has to be sent is that a vintage thing like it has to be a little bit no I really want to know a serious question I don't know I'd say it's a vintage set but what originally happened is I intended this yarn for somebody else so I bought two skeins and then switched and was like oh this would be great for my other friend for her mittens but I had already started this and I was like oh I'll just do a set and then I did like not being in your head and keeping track of I can't imagine being in my head either I think what's the time well every year I make this is like mine it medical journal so in it I have I keep track of everybody and I have the type of project I have the yarn that I'm using I put a checkmark I'll just flash this out a flash when you have the check mark when I have the yarn in my stash and and then there's an empty box and left to check off when it's done and there's my totally terrible yes she put witness to 108 like so didn't even notice that was like posted like its name missed I'm like oh my god I am an idiot I was so focused on making it cute I feel like that's oh I just wish me he's all about the font not the number this is your this guy yes and I also have a yardage County later what yeah so okay wait this is last year okay well why do you have a garbage calculator so on my on my Instagram I try and try to do weekly updates every Tuesday and on the weekly update I'll put a yardage counter - how many are Chickahominy how many yards I have knitted so far for nimis yeah so does that make you feel like you're accomplishing something even though they're not finished is that why you do that it does feel good it feels good to have like a number and to see that growing because especially from weeks like maybe two to five I have a lot of things that are all in the middle and it feels like nothing is getting done I hear them and I start to panic and freak out so the yardage counter really helps me be like okay I've knit like five hundred yards this week so I'm not doing nothing okay so okay gallops and it's fun to say like I'm hoping at the end this year because everything kind of fell apart last year I didn't get a final number yeah this year I want to get a final number and like convert it into like how many miles of yarn is that such and such like football fields yeah that's cute yeah I I think I'm gonna think about that for for 2019 as a whole the whole year of just like how much because if you just I count by this game and then I also like if I'm halfway through a project I'll weigh this game yeah and then count that bite yeah so yeah that's hard yeah that's not bad I have a scale now and this year for 2018 I just wrote down everything I finished in a month I finished it which was very satisfied yes but at the same time I don't know when I finished it so like in September I had one finished thing but then in October I had six or seven so I just have been but I don't know because I didn't write it down I must have been working on stuff yeah instead remember to finish yeah in October yeah anyway so I'm going to think about different ways to keep track because that sounds fun it is fun okay well this is probably like the more ambitious project I have going right now because it's cables and seats did girlfriend and it's like it's faith more like oh there okay hey just like that so it's its own it's just starting this is- ease who's that for dummies I'm doing a matching set so I'm making two of these can I just say that again I'm making two of these for my very darling friends in Sweden so this is sweaters it's gonna be a sweater vest it's she's also little okay wait okay stretch it up okay yeah I get totally yeah I got it okay two sweater vests Matthew matching me to take your old seed stitch sweater vest see it's just in shock will ya it's real so this is linen quilt oh good he'll double which is basically my obsession so I work at purl Soho I'm around yarn yeah five or more days a week yeah linen well is everything it's like really I'm not I promise I'm not just like trying to plug into my portion no but this is a nice it's really nice and he'll double its DK weight and knits up well it's merino and alpaca and linen and it's Tweety and it's it's like sixteen bucks you have 480 value in 40 yards so if you double that up its 440 or it's a DK I like it much better he'll double and I love the feel of the fabric yeah yeah it's nice I love it it's kind of like what do we call it like staff pick I think over half of our staff would say that linen quills their favorite Emery yarn and do the customers agree customers um because I could see some of the customers at purl Soho just going for like the softest that's what I was going to say I think more I think more of our like regular everyday customers tend to go for the softest squishiest so a cashmere merino blue line wait we need more samples of this in purl Soho and get people on board yeah and put it near the Brooklyn tweed wall yeah because it looks I mean privileged a nice family tweed toilet in the same family yes I agree I don't work Doug that I just know this store pretty well I think this should be over there by the Brooklyn tweed wall yeah okay that's like two and this is this is that bar you are with - this is I'm in the first one yeah yeah yeah sorry I have not started up a second and it's the same color the second one same color and debugging the so this is for my friend Josie and Josie's about my height and her wife is about six foot so it's gonna be a very different funny sweater honey that's gonna be cute it will put their little different sizes their revenue they're the best I was gonna say something about oh you should have a theme every year like this year is like a year of the multiple yeah this year really playing your if the toy yeah I'm hearing the time there are so many this is yeah three sets of matching and things right now that's why I said multiples just in case it was like triples that are supposed to have a different theme yeah okay okay um this one is another project bag winter polar bears that is the clever clementines she's always at Indian tangled okay it's actually if you you know Tasha if I go by golly yeah that's her mom oh that's right there the Betty said I'm her instant which Tasha made this yeah right back yeah but she made it any acorns acorns and it was like when orangie yeah super cute well then this is just another keyhole scarf for my favorite vintage dealer buddy yeah she's made Linton she's made the list yeah yeah she might find you some good stuff she just finds good stuff and then I buy it that's what my dealer um okay so then the last is something that I did post on my Instagram about this is this was going to be the first year I was knitting for myself who during knit miss and I was going to give myself one day a week then I got to work on this project in hopes that I would get it done for yes yes I forgot about this one yeah it's I got this yarn at I might need your help molding and it's a get help funky right now I got this yarn at right-back here this year and I've been so obsessed with it that I it was just like I know that the knitters who are watching can understand that you sometimes get yarn that you're so like so stoked about and so excited and you want to knit with it right away and you already have a project and it's like it's like when you read a good book and all you can do is just like I need that book and think about the book like that's how I felt about this yarn when I found it yeah yeah yeah it's catskills merino I'm gonna do an interview with them please do because they're amazing they're a little farm like upstate New York they're on the list I just need to get it together and this is naturally dyed no it's not yeah wait what I know I know I have said that to everybody and they're like no can't be but on their website it's like is it an indigo situations not indigo based it's something that starts with an eye and then something else like they're mixed together is that you can kind of see like I'm gonna meet them marry you get really yeah look at the variation on here can you see it in there you can look at like yarn - wow that is so amazing and did you know you wanted to make this sweater I knew I wanted to make like 1950s kind of like wintery your scene yeah like color so this will have it's gonna have a big like pine tree here and then a reindeer right you can see the reindeer see the reindeer you can see the body right little light little legs there's a few like me it's on its way but I you know I started this a little bit before knit myth started and then was like I love it so much I'm going to give myself one day a we are hahaha though I feel like you're so cool it's not it was wishful thinking if but the good thing is that it's to me it's not inherently like Christmas it snatcher no you're right so I can finish this up in January and wear it for the rest of winter it's a center thank you it's worth it take your time on it make sure it's right it's so beautiful on it I might even make that one - where'd you get that pattern this is from a Jack Frost I think 1951 how do you find I you know I need to give a shout out because I have so many people contact me on Instagram or even at the yarn shop over the years who are just like I have these books from my great-grandmother and they're just sitting in my house and I'll just send them to you I I get that often and it's incredibly sweet and very special because that's always my thing with vintage too is that I love it if it has a story or might know the origins of where it's coming from just makes it more special and you just page through and find all the treasures yeah yeah I tend to my favorite my favorite knitting books are Jack Frost you're like I'm in row me no flowers on eBay today yeah yeah well there pull one out yeah oh no this is a Jack Frost I think this actually has the best pattern in it so we can gather this now what is the main difference between how patterns were written then compared to now one is that none of them give a yardage ever they give it in ounces boom so you have to do some you have to be able to convert and you have to be able to know like judging by gauge and judging by maybe the name of the yarn or if it's sometimes it will say like four ply three PI to PI we do that mean four ply is like a fingering weight have two plies like a lace weight three ply is like light fingering you would say you know one would know that really that's just stuff you know yeah and this is the whole pattern yeah so it's only I can show this right yeah okay so like here's the picture and then the whole pattern for is this from between my fingers is this so if there is a stitch like a textured stitch pattern it's written out cables all of that I guess that's kind of still true like that you'll have the written but you'll have the chart you do not get the luxury of a chart unless there's color work color work there's usually a chart they still have their bulky sweaters in here I know I've I existed in the fifties - pastor pastor that's what I'm making oh the dad's for the sweetener oh yes that's incest here's the finished object except theirs will be a v-neck and look at their hair okay so that's why I love Jack Frost I get so much style inspiration from these gorgeous gals their hair is incredible so incredible it hurts my soul it's so good and I love so I'm just gonna keep going Quito out for a second Jack Frost what I love about them is that nearly all of the patterns in there have like small details that's kind of what Jack Frost is all about is it's simple it's easy to wear it's easy ish to knit but looks interesting stone like just a small little stitch pattern but their hair is everything they all have the best hair I can't like well an you can tell that they got that someone did it like it's not it's well yeah I feel like in movies like Perry movies it's always awake yeah I know very this is their real hair yeah yeah of course that's just sit there very long hair it's a quite real hair I know so I think that's good for you because you're setting your own real hair yes what I'm saying is you know when you go like if we were to watch I don't know like Scarlett Johansson do a fifties show she have a wig on yeah fair and so I'm saying they this is they were on set real hair really done yes so there's hope for if you want to get it done yourself this is insane and they're just like the Jack Frost books to there are some like Minerva oh gosh what's the other one there's another big one with Columbia yarns and they always they'll kind of do their knits like out in the wild which is super cute but I love that Jack Frost is so simple it's just the backdrop and it almost always two really cute ladies with different color hair side-by-side and two like projects that are kind of similar knees so you can match you match your friend can yeah matchy matchy the year of the twin here's the book this one's mine on the left because this is the bulky and what are they looking at is what I want to know there's like just look right look at that see stand right there oh look she's holding a little camera yeah right she's a prop she has a job looks like she's wearing easily like a little camera oh yeah these girls are holding flowers and Jack Frost also can like cuz my knitting especially more recently I've just veered a little more towards like the casual / like feminine masculine so yeah I noticed you've been wearing pants more I do love pants I love pandas now like 1940s trousers yeah I think Noah's got on your and stuff yes but there are sweaters I think they could be you can dress them with a skirt and it can be kind of feminine or you can put them with trousers and it could be a little bit more on the like casual masculine side my great I love that okay so what have you not cast on yeah number seven weird it's okay yeah you're still in the single that just still single digits for three more days okay um gosh I would say the biggest thing is I need to cast on Sarah's sweater I have food yeah you haven't started I have I haven't started that yet sorry okay but the good thing is that her birthday is also in January so worst case I knit a hat for Christmas okay um I have that I have to do the other sweater vest those are also international gifts don't know if those will go on time just being honest with myself have a fair isle beret from my friend in New Zealand may I consult my book yes please um thank you I have socks for my sister mm-hmm that will be a good one and I have I think a project this is what I've been trying to do for three or four years now my grandfather is for lack of a better term like a mountain man he studied like Native American everything for 35 years he's like built a tepee on his land like he lives like I love the vintage lifestyle and he lives like this special Dances with Wolves manly lifestyle is amazing so I've been wanting for a very long time to knit him a hat with like a Native American tribal design like accurate and with the tribe that he studies a while up and I got this really special yak yarn from my M yeah who I love so much it's all like natural undyed yak because my papa like talks about yakin and bison and all of those in Buffalo like stories that revolve around them so that's a very special I think like very very personal project that I've been wanting to do for him for a long time and he is he's still out like on the land and they have horses so he goes out in the morning it's really cold so he needs a warm cozy so good yeah now what about your upbringing and your family that makes you all choose like a very issue heir yeah yeah identity lifestyle why isn't it that you're all the same and living that like what what makes it that you all gravitate towards something specific and different from one to the next it's no I as much as I as I've gotten older I've come to realize like oh my family is not normal it's especially on my dad's side because my grandfather's so into this my father is really into like his thing his thing my brother has his own saying of artwork and he like plays metal in a band and my sister is super like hippy and is going to school to be a massage therapist and she has her own world and I have my own vintage thing I think we grew up at least like my siblings and I we grew up with a family that is so passionate about whatever it is that their thing is like it for all of us it is all encompassing in our life and that's how like that's the advantage between you yeah like for me the vintage lifestyle isn't just what I wear it's also the things I have around me and the way I like live my life and see my life and I think that all of us in my family do that with our own thing and we've all kind of been unintentionally encouraged by the previous generation yeah yeah so cool I think it's really interesting because so many people just I know this is about knitting but it's about Sydney so many people I mean this is why towns were built right because families raise children and then they State and then raise more children like that's how a tent-like that's why I go to a town and all the streets have like the similar family names right so so many people just their tendency is to follow exactly in their family's footsteps and don't even leave the town but you guys are following the footsteps but yet having such different points of view it's just really interesting to me yeah really cool okay so any other final thoughts on nimis my goal is to be done by like January 20th okay like having everything done all right and sent off okay because I am fully acknowledging that there are many international and domestic like gifts that I have to send out that need to probably go out all on Tuesday mm-hmm or earlier and that includes an entire sweater from start to finish or like three yeah so that's not gonna not happen and that's fine and this is I think my sixth year of knit --mess so I am going to enjoy it does it brings me a deep amount of stress and a deep lack of sleep but a lot of joy I'm gonna flip it it is worth it's a good path yes and all of your people you have rules about knit worthy just talk about your knit worthy why yes so some people haven't seen you here before yes I have as we all have been burned in the past with gifting knitwear to people who are not knit were thee and not knit worthy to me is somebody who doesn't who sees handmade as kind of a bad thing or sees handmade as like oh you wouldn't go and like spend your money on me instead you just like made me something just and they don't get it they don't get it they don't understand like the reason that I knit for all these people is that I love and care about them so deeply that like I want to spend my time doing something that makes me think about them that I've put thought into like what is something for me that I think encompasses are embodies that person and that they're going to love and it's about taking the time to plan that and do that that I think is how I show people that I care and if I spend a few hours even just on making a hat for somebody and they don't get it off the list I think I don't have too many people in my world especially anymore yeah as I grow older like who aren't knit worthy babble most everybody at this point in
