hello I'm Chris rhs with handun hunting a field we're here to answer that big question cor or Spore all right and to get a little background here we're going to have to go back to how I ended up here all right so I've purchased both these guns but see how we got to this was I retired two years ago from building custom guns for a living and I didn't want to build a gun anymore want to work on a gun I just wanted to go hunt and shoot and that's it didn't have anything else to do with it so I started looking around and the first thing I did is I ordered a COR this is a COR Mongoose it's course entry level handgun um this one happens to be in 44 and I've done quite a bit of hunting with it I've killed mu deer and Elk a lot of armit with it um I've shot a lot of Steel and I competed a handgun Hunters competition with it great shooting gun awesome firearm tight Dimensions really well put together firearm all right then Spore this year while walking around Shot Show I stumbled upon Spore I picked it up I felt a lot of the same quality in it when I picked it up and I started looking at it and examining it I had to have one say pardon the guns being dirty I shoot these a lot and uh I don't clean them until they need clean we just keep running them but uh great firearm once again tight Dimensions both guns are totally machine just awesome all right and I've taken I went on Exotics hunt inex T us with this to get some hunting with it real quick so I have hunting exposure with it it took multiple game animals down there you're seeing a hide from one some of the other hides are on the wall in here and pictures um I've shot verman with it and uh I'm the match director for hanga hunters competition so I basically set up the same kind of stages and I've been practicing on it all spring long getting ready for hanga hunters competition I have that same experience with this one as I do the core and you're going to see videos here pop up on the perimeter on the perip fields here of the screen they're going to show me shooting both at distance um both guns shoot remarkable all right so the next big thing is price point all right if you're looking at these you're probably also looking at custom handguns they're all going to be in the same ballpark in price range the difference in price probably isn't going to sway someone who's an actual customer for any of these whether it's custom or these from buying one of the other you're going to buy them because it's what you want and has the features you want at this at this price point the big difference you'll see you can get it right now from Nighthawk Customs if they don't have men they'll have men in a couple months not a big deal you'll be able to get it Spore uh they might have one in the country if they don't maybe 20 days to get it in the state side once you order um so pretty much both these are readily available the one thing you're going to see with Customs is the wait time depending on the custom gunsmith you pick you could be looking at anywhere from four months to two years and sometimes more all right so when I started looking at all these guns I wanted that totally machine firearm all right and there's a reason why I want a totally machine a totally machine firearm or is completely machine from bar stock meaning they take a chunk of Steel and they cut it out and they make every little piece every little piece of both of these is machine that custom firearm is going to start as some standard production gun in the United States whichever brand it may be they all start as castings or forging every one of them every brain we sell in the United States castings or forgings except for cor and Spore unless there's another brain out there that I haven't stumbled upon yet so when you do the casting or forging method you're trying to remove as much metal as possible to get you as close to final Dimensions through a less expensive process casting or forging that we have to do less machine work to clean it up that's going to lead to more difficulties not necessarily meaning they can't do it but more difficulties in getting it set up perfect in the machines to get that final product these have very little um run out between Parts uh the tolerances stay tight when you start picking up these Factory guns you're going to see variances in tolerances tolerance is stack tolerances what a tolerances is the allowable dimensional Dimension change or variance between Parts that'll be accepted by the end engineer the end quality control person these have much tighter tolerances all right versus some our other production firearms and when you're allowing a few thousands out here and a few thousands out there all that adds up to be a lot of thousands in variance there's very little run out between these parts very little tolerance shift between these parts and these guns um so to to fix that when you're building the custom guns you're normally going around trying to fix all those tolerance issues you're trying to tighten things up you're trying to take out play um you're correcting any other Mass manufacturing errors that's already done in these that was a big thing to me for both cuz once again all I want to do is I want to hunt and I want to shoot all right with accuracy being my thing if you've seen videos of me shooting in the past in blog post and such you've seen me shooting revolvers out to 150 200 yards and more taking game and so forth um I demand accuracy I'm not Jerry mli once again so I'm not out here racing him I'm not here dumping rounds on a mansiz Target no I'm trying to shoot Vermin from anywhere from the size of a small water bottle all the way through bull El all right and I want to take them precisely every time I put the sights on them um I count I hunt with just a handgun and I count on its accuracy in the field and I count on its reliability too and all that factors in to me jumping up the ladder in what I'm buying so so once again price point you're right there the same thing as having a custom build all right wait time whole lot quicker to get get a lot longer to get on a on a custom revolver um so with all that being said let's talk about the similarities between the two so this take me a second to go through is I got to recall them all as we go but both totally machine once again both have polygonal rifled barrels the big thing I hear from German Engineers about polygonal rifled barrels is that they're easier to clean all right what I've noticed shooting these guns I also get somewhere between 50 and 100 feet per second more in velocity but that can come from a few different things all of their Chambers are uniform so are their cylinder throats so on a standard production revolver they uh they generally ream more than one chamber at a time meaning they're using multiple reamers so we could end up with multiple size Chambers and throats whereas these are all exactly the same I don't know the insides of how they're working I don't if they're cutting one at a time or what they're doing but all their all their Chambers measure out the same um I've pin gauge all these throats I've internal mik my Chambers everything is exactly the same um so maybe the higher velocity comes from there maybe it doesn't on Customs I've built I've tightened up Barrel cylinder gaps um I generally set those right between 3 and 5,000 and that's where these are the cor is set at 3 and half thousand the Spore is set right at 5,000 for Barrel cylinder Gap that's the gap between the face of the cylinder and the back end of the barrel the bigger that Gap the more loss and gases you have the lower your velocity is going to be so like on most of our current production revolvers Out There Our standard ones that everyone's buying Off the Shelf at your gun store they normally have somewhere around an 8 to 15,000 Tolerance on that that's a whole lot of gas excap it's not that much gas escaping out of these um also going forward that they're both even though this is a 44 and this is 357 they're both using l-frame grip designs they'll both take Smith and Wesson grips um this one has hoges on it the L frame grips will slide right on here uh this one has NS but standard Smith and W and L frames will go on here as long as you make a little relief cut for let's call it their hammer spring support there's a little flat piece of metal in there that supports their hammer spring assembly you have to make a relief cut for that so they'll both take L frame grips they both have great trigger systems they both come with great sighting systems uh if the red dots weren't on here they would both take LPA sights as comes with an LPA in the rear mounted within a a cut on the back of or on the top of the top strap and this one takes a removable LPA site that's held down with screws just like an LPA would be on a Smith and weson so they both have great sights they both have great barrels they both have tight Dimensions they're both totally machined both great guns now let's talk about the differences all right what's different in them all right as you can see right up front we have high polish pieces on this cor Hammer trigger high polish um our barrels high polish right here around the CR on the outside that's all cosmetic stuff there's nothing functional there um on the cor here and the difference you have your cylinder release your cylinder release is located here I find this to be a wonderful feature because it gets red of the cylinder relase on the side so under recoil of my two XL size hands there's no way that cylinder release is going to hit my thumb and it's just as easy to get to I do have to reposition the hand I do have to break it away that could be a maybe a problem for an action shooter but it'll open right up okay removal of the cylinder you have a push button on the side so if you had a 379 mm version so you have two different cylinders and you want to change them out very simple change those out put it back on Cor also has to use a recoil lug assembly that's what I'm going to call it inside here there's a little lug that locks into the the crane here supporting the cylinder for the front lock up really robust really strong great system um the other big difference that we're going to see right now this is not Optics ready all right we're going to get more into that in a few moments once we get there so on the Spore it's a little more standard Smith and Wesson layout once again it's totally machine there's not a single MIM or cast part in it but what you have here is your standard cylinder release just like a Smith and Wesson they make a nice wide oh I say a paddle it almost looks like a brake pedal kind of setup you got a good purchase on on it um they do do this polished turn line on the cylinder or polished area right here between the Locking notches it probably allows it to track a little more smoothly as it's going around um the cor tracks smoothly as well too uh there another big thing I missed on the cor is this has their own trigger system designed in it all right it's qu's its own animal a Spore is largely Smith and Wesson designed with improvements were needed um some of the other differences here we use tor screws for the side plate assembly they use flat on the cor uh could be a big deal to you might not be on the Spore you use a ball detent to lock up in the front you can see it here on the back of the crane there's a little ball there that locks it locks up here probably locks up just as well as the cor does you'd have to look under highspeed video to really tell if there's a difference I haven't notice it coming loose um they're going to have a 44 coming out next year so they'll be comparable I'm gonna get a 44 so we'll be able to see if there's any differences in longevity but highly doubted they're both well-made guns good steals no problems there the big difference Optics ready all right so let's talk about those features that we're missing out on all right between cor and Spore and my feelings on is where we start getting into opinion when I first got this cor so I'm sitting here with a over 3K gun um trying to avoid those keep numbers to get flagged by Facebook or someone else as we share this around the first thing I did with this gun was detail strip it set it up in my milling machine and I drilled and tapped it before I even took it to the range I drilled and tapped this brand new gun to put this Trijicon SRO on it I had to make this uh Red Dot reflex sight base to get it ready I pretty much run red dots on or op or red dots or U any other of Dot site on handguns anymore for my hunting the distance as I go iron sights just don't work for it and these work in all lighting conditions where iron sights you can have various changes in point of impact and such using those in different lighting conditions that I might face in the field but anyways I set this up had the drill and tap at Trion SRO but once it was done phenomenal did great at hangun hers competition with it it's done great in the field takeing game I did have to drill and tap an expensive gun right off the bat this custom gun that's not sitting here let's say it was a Smith and Wesson in 19 in the 1990s they figured out the guns need to be Optics ready they started drill and tapping all their frames Ruger started putting scope rings on some of their Hunter models the intergral scope ring system they had it on the Red Hawk the super Blackhawks other models out there long come Spore you take that LPA sight off it's drilled and tapped with 648 screw holes this egw From Evolution Gun Works scope base bolted right on there that was Optics ready mounted my ultra dot was ready to go pretty simple and a whole lot less uh pucker Factor going on versus Drilling and tapping a very expensive handgun um I can't imagine what a gunsmith would charge you to work on that cuz they got to make enough money to cover their oopsie to custom make this and drill and tap that frame on a really expensive handgun that they can't just go out and instantly get to replace it um luckily I have a whole machine shop available I can do it myself that right there Smith and Wesson figured it out in the 90s where are you so along with that they offer they do offer an Optics ready model cor does it's almost a third more in cost it has a rail from the front about the front of the cylinder for going down the barrel which means they put your optic very forward on the gun if you want to run a pistol scope it's going to be kind of crowded up there um it's going to be right near the muzzle and then it starts having these rails all over it not what I need I don't need a chainsaw effect from a handgun that's a big negative to me this the Mongoose looks like a great classic firearm it has everything I need except it's not Optics ready once again Smith and Wesson got that in the 90s I don't know where they were on their thought process there Spore out of the box ready to go with that both guns shoot phenomenal there is no question about that at all both of them shoot really well um there's lots of videos out there me shooting both these at distance and there's game animals to prove it and say then there's highs on the wall in here from this one there's some pictures up there too from what the cor is taking um so they both have adjustable over overt travel stops on the triggers I always run those back and away cuz what I don't want to happen is when that trigger breaks I don't want the trigger to suddenly stop I want to have a little PL behind it so I don't Jerk it down when that trigger suddenly both these Firearms are phenomenal the cor and the Spore are both highly accurate I've shot them both at extended distances um there's videos out there of me shooting both of them at distance taking animals with both of them both of them work both of them work great the big major difference between the two is modern versus 1970s Optics ready not Optics ready it's whether if you want that kind of feature if you want Optics you're way smarter and way farther ahead to go with Spore versus cor unless you want a heavily railed model um this gun flat out Works they got more models coming shortly in other calibers it it's going to do wonderful things in our Market they've answered every call that I think the handgun Hunter has and they're just building upon it as we go so great guns both of them are Great Guns this one's more user friendly with being able to add Optics to it or what other whatever other devices you want um I hope to bring you more content from hun hunting a field if you want to get in touch with me you can go to my blog at hun
