in this video series we're going to try to convert this used hayward sand pool filter this one happens to be a hayward s 24 4 t model it's a 24 inch holds three cubic feet of media normally sand we're trying to convert it to a uh a bead filter using plastic media ordered off of amazon looked around didn't see a good youtube video so i figured i'd shoot it maybe it'll help somebody comes with a veriflow xl valve and i'll walk you through the basic steps of converting this to a koi pond filter that you can backwash first task of converting the sand filter over is to go ahead and take this valve off the top you'll need to remove this lock ring and then you'll have to wiggle this out if it has a bunch of sand in it it'll be tough to come out i've removed this one already normally there's a pipe coming up this will come off of the pipe that runs down to the laterals we'll use this later and you'll need to go ahead and get all the sand out of your sand filter i've already removed all the sand out of this one you can dump it over you can run a hose in it wash all that sand out so when you use one of these if you do it with sand with koi pond it'll plug too easily you want to use a plastic media and i would recommend that you open up these laterals to get better flow of water through the filter without using as much pressure you want to try to get away from using a high pressure high energy consumption pool pump you'd really like to use a high volume low pressure koi pond pump so to do that the standard laterals have these very fine slits cut in them to keep sand from flowing through we're going to use a much larger media we can really open that up and decrease the back pressure that this filter will produce so over here i'll show you where i've broken out two of every lateral one of those little uprights i've left two and i've taken two out i've left two and i've taken two out and i've done that on one one side of the top of the lateral and then also on one side of the bottom of this lateral so basically i've opened up this and the back side of that same lateral i've done it on this one i've done it on that one and i've done it on this third one i've got to go now and do the rest of them there's a total of eight so uh i'll make a quick video to show you how i pop those out with a screwdriver all right here we go i'm gonna break out we're going every other so two are out we're gonna leave two we're gonna break out these next two okay i'm going to leave two and break out the next two that's it maybe this is easier put up here right here good nice and close okay i think this will work the best i wanted to show you what media we're going to go ahead and put in this filter here's a two cubic foot box ordered off of amazon this is the plastic fill material i guess it's some kind of k1 copycat it's not that sophisticated but it is very inexpensive and it's big enough to where it shouldn't cause us any problems getting through the laterals for instance here are the laterals that we just modified you can see the pieces are significantly bigger and can't go through there we will have to make some modifications to the diffuser that's underneath the valve but i wanted to give you a quick shot of what the media is going to look like what i've read on amazon is this stuff initially will float but once it gets bacteria growing on it it will sink and we'll have a basically a standard standard fill that'll grow plenty of biological all right here's the underside of the valve from the sand filter and something i want to show you this is the media we purchased off of amazon and it will actually fit through these holes so this diffuser here is meant to protect um or keep everything inside the sand filter during the backwash water will flow through all these holes but these holes here some of these holes are a particular problem and that the media will just fall right through them so that's a problem what we're going to do is we're going to take this uh skimmer basket we bought at the local pool supply store we're going to cut a hole big enough in it here to be able to fit over this center pipe and it will rest down here and cover these holes or at least protect them and this is significantly smaller and i'll go do that now cut that and fit that right over there to fit that skimmer basket to make it easier i'm going to take this diffuser off if you've never done this i want to make sure i point something out there's normally a screw right here in this small hole and that screw holds this diffuser onto the body of this valve so make sure you take that out before you wrestle this diffuser off the valve otherwise you'll break the tab okay with this diffuser off i'm going to take it to the shop and modify that basket to fit over this and protect these all right i put a hole saw here on my drill i've checked to make sure the hole saw slightly bigger than where that center pipe mounts to the diffuser now i'll go ahead and drill it slightly off center but we got it drilled and it does indeed fit over the diffuser so now i'll work on securing it on that bottom edge so i went ahead and mounted the skimmer basket fit is pretty good may put a ring clamp a hose clamp around there just to fill that void in a little bit tighten this up a little bit i ended up just attaching it with four stainless steel screws drilled them straight through and into the plastic diffuser screwed them in with a screwdriver so we should be ready to load up the filter with the uh media okay i went ahead and took the laterals they were folded up i sat the lateral pipe in and then i hand folded all the laterals down you can see they're all opened up ready to go you just drop this in put it in the center best you can and get it ready to put the media so i went ahead and covered the tube the drop pipe there with some packaging tape to make sure that this media doesn't go down that pipe so on the label of your hayward pro series sand filter you should see here effective filtration area this is a 3.1 cubic foot filter i just put two cubic feet of media in and it filled it about halfway so still need to order one more cubic feet of media to finish this off
