welcome to fair game I'm Christine Lakin my guest today went from a young entrepreneur selling garbage bags door-to-door to changing the world of tech this year he's number 179 on the Forbes wealthiest Americans list but he still wears Dallas Mavericks t-shirts to work and on this show Shark Tank star and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban it's good to see you it's good to be here thank you were you chuckling a little bit at the your place on the Forbes list yes I didn't know what the number was how do you feel about it I feel good I guess you're a competitive guy though I don't know I don't care about that so in January it's gonna be 20 years since you first bought the Mavericks do you remember that day still vividly but it was official oh yeah what's excited to you from that day walking up there and just going oh my god I can't believe I'm doing this and just thinking to myself this is where the fun begins and also being terrified you know the Mavs have been so bad for so long that I've made so many promises that it was going to change and then I think the bigger issue even was dealing with the NBA because they tried to stop me a lot of people tried to stop me from owning the team and David Stern actually stood up for me and got it approved but just you know just to saying to myself you know we're gonna figure out how to win and I don't give a damn what the NBA thinks I'm gonna do it my way what do they have against you just because the minute I took over I was raised in hell you know they always thought this is the way you're supposed to run a team everybody was like you know stand up you know sit up in the owners box or wherever you're going to sit and just shut up and write the checks I'm like that's just not how I run a business that's just not who I am and so I just decided you know what's worked for me to get me to this point is gonna work for me with the Mavs why change why stop and he felt like it was your personality and kind of being out there that helps with your previous business it was just I didn't give it what they thought right I was just gonna do what I thought was right that I always tried to be prepared I always tried to learn you know my business and understand my business and if they don't like it that was their fault and if it worked at work than if it didn't in at what point did you feel like the league was like okay we accept you you're in we didn't want you but now you know you're cool probably not till the Mavs win a championship and then probably not really till David Stern left because we were always at odds I love David right we're good friends but we just disagreed about a lot Adam and I are a lot more on the same page do you think Mark Cuban now is different from Mark Cuban then not really I think it's more come to me then I've changed to it right the things that I've always tried to change and change you know change approach the NBA is kind of come full circle I feel like I don't have as much I need to change but you know I still go out there raise some hell you're not running out on the court though anymore oh yeah a little challenging people to find you yeah yeah people just are used to it they just don't do anything about it so it doesn't make me doesn't make news or anything like angels like back in the mid 2000s I they passed a rule that I couldn't stand by the Huddle's you know during a game yeah I didn't care and they fined me and then they just stopped right you know now you know they'll say you know you you can't walk on the court I'll still walk on the court you'll still see me in you know before a game during a game talking right I just don't do anything they're adapting to you they've adapted to me I know big way I mean I came in and I said we don't sell basketball we sell entertainment and experiences and they're like no and you know but they've adapted and so yeah they just do what I say now is it true that what you were a season ticket holder you would actually heckle players oh hell yeah I remember actually Charles Barkley and oh god I when I was a kid um Robert Parish so the maps were so bad we would buy tickets for ten bucks and just walk down just walk down to the front row or second row whatever it was and I remember we were playing the Celtics and Robert Parish was at the free-throw line and we're just stupid right been drinking and I'm like chief you're getting fat you know and he just put the ball down started cracking up and all this stuff and so you know I was just like any other fan I like to get a response from players do you wish you could stow they yet I still do okay you're still out there heckling opposing what are you guys are bad well I like like I mean we'll do stuff like if a player has a rap video like we'll put it on the jumbotron or we love that yeah you know we'll put we'll put their faces on like I remember we did all the single ladies we did a single ladies video and put like Ginobli face on one of the dancers from the Saturday night life oh wow yes we'll have fun creative heckling and control Matt I think you can do well yeah and plus a leg I'll still give him a hard time you know if they've done something or said something oh good nature right not like mean but good-natured do you remember the best piece of advice that you got because when you bought the Mavs they were not in a good place and very quickly you turned things around for them did you get advice are you the kind of guy who you do what you know I got a lot Jerry Buss gave me the best advice interesting yeah Jerry Buss called me up and the league was giving me a hard time about everything and he was like mark let me just tell you you know when I gave Magic Johnson 25 year million dollar year contract everybody hated me and told me not to do it when I did this when I did that you know just relax don't worry about them just be yourself and the league would be better for it and so he was really supportive and that was important for you as the Dennis Rodman bring in Dennis Rodman and one of those things yeah I mean that was you know that was just trying to get better you know we were like last and rebounding and so I went to Don Nelson our coach and he went to the team and said look we can bring in Dennis Rodman he could rebound you know and the team actually had a vote and they were like why not and he came in he played two weeks I think or something like that and just didn't work so you make some mistakes he move on did he live in your guest house yeah he did because he did his driver's license was suspended and so and he needed a place to live and I wanted to make sure he wasn't driving and so he lived in my guest and literally we didn't touch that guest house for ten years after he lived there but because of what went down and Dennis and I have stayed friends yeah but there's a little thing of Carmex that was under the bed for like ten years no one would touch it wait he was there for what ten days yeah at the most days and he reeks enough havoc in your guest house yeah because no one wanted to know right everybody's like now I'm not going in there I mean you must have seen what was going in and out yeah I'm not gonna bust okay all right that's interesting I like tennis he's a good dude you also tried to bring some other big names to Dallas Shaq Kobe did you ever try for those guys yeah so I thought we had a trade done I talked to Jerry Buss this is when I was training for Dancing with the Stars that's why I'll never forget it and there was one of the PAS that was just a huge estate gore fan used to give me a hard time and I'm like dude we just I just talked to Jerry Buss and we have traded we had a trade down I think was Josh Howard and Jason Terry and picks and he was like okay and then he took one last shot at talking Kobe out of it didn't happen Shaq would get a hold of me all the time come and get me come and get me come and get me why ain't you got me yet come on what's wrong with you come with me I mean every time I saw him don't forgive me and so we almost had him one time when he was with Miami or maybe Phoenix before Miami I forget but we thought we had the team talked into buying him out and then him coming to play for the mid-level and he would just reduce it where was this 2000 2007 baby present yeah and so yeah but it never happened but I always thought
