how's it going everyone and welcome back to another video in this quick video i'm just going to be going over a knocking noise in a vehicle knocking noise that was picked up on a road test and the simple tests i used to diagnose that problem so the first thing i'm going to do on this video is i'm going to let you listen to the road test that i had and how the sound presented after that i'm just going to be running through the possibility of that noise when you're back in the workshop what you're going to be looking for and generally the simple checks that you can do to test them items out so when you hear a noise like that that's coming in and out as you go over uneven surfaces you have to start to think about the items that can move up and down that stabilize the vehicle so on this one i'm thinking about the shocks i'm thinking about the drop links or the sway bar links as they're called here and the anti-roll bar bushes as well they're all the items that you start think about immediately when you have a noise like that but let's get it back to the workshop and have a better look and see what actually is causing that noise okay so when you're getting a noise like that it is an up and down noise you're talking about going over different terrains and you're getting that rock up and down that is going to mean that some part of the suspension slash stabilization is going to be causing that issue so the items most commonly is you're talking about the shock or the shock top mount something with the shock bush or anything securing onto the shock in general the lower part of the shock like a ball joint is also a possibility and then on the um stabilization side of the vehicle that anti-roll bar or the drop link slash sway bar link any of those items can cause that fault i have heard a very similar noise even with the anti-roll bar bush or mount it has that hard sounding and even though it is a mounting bush once the play develops you can have that type of noise so the simple checks on the likes of these is stationary on the ground with all the weight of the vehicle on it is to do a bounce test not only does this give you an idea of the noise if it does show up it also gives you the location very easy you can push on the four corners but if you know where the noise is on the road test you just go straight ahead and you start to bounce on that area this test can not only show you what area of the vehicle what corner the problem is but it also can give you whether it's upper mid or lower when doing this check so with the bounce test done it was up in the air on the hoist and get a good look underneath it now on this particular vehicle it was very easy the securing nut on the drop link had come away and it was actually loose and it was shaking up and down that was resonating through the shock and that's why you could hear it so prominently in the cabin on the left hand side during that test drive now the common things to check for if yours isn't a drop link or a sway bar link is you go through the different shock components so you could either start at the top and you're talking about the shock top mount the strut itself maybe have a visible leak or a knocking noise the coil spring doesn't tend to show up in this type of noise you tend to hear a pinging type of noise if you have a coil spring but then as you come down lower on the shock itself them securing bolts i have seen those loose before if someone was in there before you didn't put everything back together you could have that problem but then more commonly on the lower side of it you've got the shock bush if it's that type of shock that you have in your vehicle and then you have the likes of the ball joint on some as well on the lower side that can cause that problem and that is it guys that is the quick and simple steps that you can take to find a front-end knocking noise on your vehicle what you always want to do is find out the corner that is causing the problem focus on that find if it's upper or lower and then stare to pry and figure out where the play is developing if it is on the rear of the vehicle there is some additional items that could be the likes of the diff mounting bushings or if you have a solid axle the likes of those bushes on the end of those also could give you issues if the control arms generally are coming from east to west and not north to south you can get a different type of noise you don't tend to get that up and down constant knocking noise as a rule of thumb of course if there is excessive um wear in any component where it has the ability to move up and down like on a wishbone if it's completely worn out you may have a noise similar to that as well and with that said that is the end of this video i really hope you enjoyed this one i hope you found it informative and useful if you did please like share comment and subscribe and i hope to see you in the next one thanks for watching
