Yeah if he does a choke he's just going to change my voice.
I'm going to sound silly, but I’m going to finish the job. What? Is this— Is this for real? Hello Internet Citizens! Welcome back to another episode of Scenic Fights’ Fight Scene Breakdown. I'm Logan Lo I'm Chad Vázquez Today we're breaking down The Hunted (2003)
with Tommy Lee Jones. It's actually our second video with Tommy Lee Jones. The first one we did was Under Siege (1992) with
Tommy Lee Jones and Steven Seagal. Yep and we had an interesting knife biting
situation there. If you haven't seen the episode, I recommend
you look back, check it out, it's one of our best ones. Also guys, you know what to do, Please hit that like button, notification bell. If you like what we're doing subscribe and of course leave comments below. Tell us what other projects you want us to
do, other scenes. Tell us how well I'm doing. How poorly Logan's doing. We're this close to firing him, right? So let us know what's going on here. That was mean Chad. I'm sorry.
[Logan] That's all right. Stay until the very end and see what grade we give The Hunted. Alright, Let's do this!
Let's go! [Logan] Alright they're saying Hi to each other. Nope no they're not. Del Toro comes in slashes the hand. We talked about this previously with
The Man From Nowhere (2010) video where Cha cut the man on the inside. Which makes sense because that's the part that grips. [Logan] Here he was cut from the outside, which
is the hand part that opens up. [Logan] Let's break that down! Del Toro steps over to his right comes out
and slashes this way cutting behind. If you cut behind the tendons behind open the grip rather than the tendons in the front which hold on so what would have made more sense is he would cut him this way. Two things would happen: 1) It would mean that he could no longer grip the knife as effectively 2) You'll note that by doing it this way I prevented Chad
from being able to flank me, because I can turn my body. Where if I'm here Chad has a straight shot to just walk behind me and take my back. [Logan] It looks like Del Toro is actually trying
to shove Jones's own knife into Jones's throat [Chad] Oh. I see. I see. Yeah. Yeah He's got his, He's got his left hand in there.
Yeah okay. Pushing him. Trying to cut in. Oh he slashed the arm. Big slash on the face. [Chad] On his cheek, yeah. [Logan] Okay. A stand-off—little Mexican stand-off. [Chad] All right.
Wait where did he caught him? By the bicep? [Logan] It looked like he cut him on the bicep.
The top part of it—oh [Logan] Right in the face.
[Chad] Oh that's disgusting. I would have thrown up.
I would have thrown up right there. And that is something one would do in a real fight. Honestly if I was in a real fight and I was in New
York City—which is where we are I'd start throwing garbage cans at people. [Chad] If it works, yeah.
[Logan] I really like that aspect of this film. [Logan] Okay and that makes sense too right? Imagine you're blinded and someone just threw something in your face and you have you have a weapon you would want to basically just flail and cover yourself In this scene Del Toro took his own
blood and threw it into Jones's face. Jones covers his eyes and tries to take the blood out. As he's doing this, he's defending himself by throwing what we call Ones and Twos. You'll note that this is almost like a three-dimensional shield. He's protecting himself like this He's covering himself so he can be in a safe way
and gather his bearings as he looks around. I like that Tommy Lee Jones looked behind him
to make sure that he wasn't flanked. Because if you notice the three-dimensional shield that he's got, Del Toro could have walked around him and flank Jones without him realizing it. Had he not looked back behind him to make
sure that wasn't the case. [Logan] All right he's looking. I also like this. They're very aware of the terrain that Jones is on.
Jones is walking carefully. He's older. Both in character and in real life so he's careful. You can see there's a waterfall so he's worried about the wetness of the stones. [Logan] So he's treading carefully. He's not just running like he was a young man—which I appreciate as well. Now that I'm getting older. Yeah of course. Yeah. I didn't want to say it. You didn't have to agree so quickly. I'm just saying. [Logan] Okay wild slash okay. [Logan] That was good. So there was a pass and then there was a cut.
We can talk about that. For those of you that don't know, Chad is not just my drinking buddy but he's also my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach. and one of the things that he's impressed upon us is not just changing distance in terms of lateral movements but also vertical movements up and down right? Yeah! That's very important. In this scene, Jones has his knife in an ice pick grip. Del Toro comes and tries to slash at his neck. He passes under. Passes the knife and then with his stone knife in an ice pick grip. slashes the thigh while passing. Note that I've progressed onto my flank. As I always want to do. And I did this by changing levels. [Logan] Okay shoving it in BAM!
I like that. When you see these scenes where they're pushing a knife into a person. That it's not the same as striking a knife in. This type of acceleration versus this type of acceleration. They're not the same. Instead of having a push here, right? [Logan] so Chad prevent me from pushing it into you.
[Chad] Yeah [Logan] Right? So I'm gonna push into you.
[Chad] Yup. Chad's much stronger than me, and younger. I don't like that [Logan] I'm doing double force. Yeah And I can't. I can't do this.
Right? Because I can't generate enough acceleration.
—we're both locked. However with this I can generate enough acceleration. And guys, I'm trying to really hold Logan off. So I could feel the difference where you're doing those hits. It's actually breaking through my frame and touching my body. [Logan] All right here we go!
Del Toro just tried to shove it in with a #8 2-on-1 Yup! 2-on-1 but now he's trying to hit the knife out of the hand. Which I don't know how valid is that. [Logan] I've that in karate and stuff. I don't think that works.
And he drops it? [Chad] oof. okay.
[Logan] That's risky. Jones has lost his weapon.
I'm here right now. I'm hitting him, right? Chad I'm going to hit you. Yep! I'll hold this real tight. I'm going to get out some aggression I've had for years. All right so we're here, right? I'm going to try to disarm him here. That's not going to work. Chad hold on to the weapon. Yup. Yup. All right so we're here let's just do a real disarm here. Yeah, couldn't hold that. You couldn't hold that, right? That would have made more sense. That hitting that happens a lot in other martial arts. I don't see that ever working against someone that has adrenaline, that's angry There's no way you can disarm him. You have to use force. You have to use leverage, physics. And with him here, By doing it this way, I'm creating a lever. This is the fulcrum for the lever. Here the farther I get from the edge, the more difficult
it is for him to hold on. He won't be able to hold on to it. Yeah So I can do a strip, or I can rip it away from him. That part didn't make sense
especially if Jones is the instructor. Jones would have known that. For this scene, Del Toro twists his hand and
drops the knife and catches it. In fact, I was actually worried about that, because I was
worried I would look stupid and drop this on on camera and I'm glad I didn't. But if we were fighting, I would be really scared about doing that. Question, why didn't he just do this? I don't understand why he wouldn't do that. That would make a lot more sense, right?
Yup! And also I get the same action right there. Now we're going to be talking about the 2-on-1 and I'll show you the 2-on-1 that we had in the scene. You'll note that his wrist was captured
and it looked like the forearm was captured. This is one of those things that visually looks as if Chad
has a lot of control, but he does not. because first of all nothing's keeping me from switching the hand. Yup Eviscerating him. One of our mutual friends who is a judo practitioner, Pak, He natively and instinctually did a proper 2-on-1 So Chad why don't you show them what is a proper 2-on-1
for someone with an edged weapon. Yes! 2-on-1 is a wrestling term there are four main variations. In our context, What probably a better 2-on-1 for Tommy Lee Jones to do is control the biceps/elbow and get a grip on the hand
that has the weapon. Right? Note that because he's got the hand also he's pressing my arm against his body so now I'm going to try to take the knife away. Chad don't let me take the knife! I just cut my finger. There's no way. I can't get this knife out. So now we're gonna struggle. I'm gonna try to keep to my feet. Chad's gonna want me on the ground, because he's got his chest against my arm. He's got my major joint— my elbow. He's got my hand itself and so now he can cause pressure on my shoulder joint and my wrist joint and take me down to the ground. And also to add to that, I can further combine that with certain leg trips or hits like that
where I can start getting his hands to base on the floor. Which is what I want because he's going to punch me. But without the full torque on my waist, This is sub-optimal. He'll eat those as he proceeds to take me to the ground. So he's going to do that—I'm going to punch his shoulder. Right?
Go! So uh yeah. I'm already down.
Note, I've posted my hand So now I have two hands locked,
just like he has two hands that are locked. But now watch. He now has an edged weapon.
What is that edged weapon? This one! I cannot use it, because he has total control of my arm. He, however, can use my entire arm as a weapon. Right here. He can stab me in the chest or
slice me in my belly. That is a proper 2-on-1. If you are going to be in a knife fight, run. if you cannot run, get that 2-on-1 as soon as possible That one!
The right one. [Chad] Ooh nice elbow. [Logan] Elbow to the face. [Chad] Okay, looks like a wrist-lock he has here.
[Logan] Kinda like a wrist-lock. [Chad] and he's blocking the carotid with his hands. Yeah that wouldn't work at all and I'll show you why in a second. Okay. Moving on slash. Oh these are two hurt people! Emotionally too, probably? Sure, right?
I mean why are they there with knives in the waterfalls Why do we fight? Yeah—oh my God.
What that the stomach? That was not good. oof Ouch!
That's gotta hurt. What the through his bicep? He's not writing anytime soon. No. Or other things you know what I'm saying? Oooh. Chad, this is a family show. I don't think so. With the amount of violence we're doing here, I don't know it's family. If you're fighting a guy that is armed, and you're not armed. You generally want to be in—one of two of what I like to consider—
the two safest ways to be. One is prayer where your hands are like this Why? I'm covering my wrists. I'm also keeping forward so that I could attack if I needed to. If I'm being purely defensive, I can do Home Alone. Home Alone, I'm completely shielded. I can't get stabbed or cut here. My arteries are being protected. My arteries are being protected here. But you'll see, I can't really launch an attack this way. Home Alone is purely defensive. Home Alone is when "Oh bad things are about to happen to me
and I don't want bad things to happen to me." Jones is in a half Home Alone. So you'll notice that we're here. Note that there is absolutely nothing—because he's in Home Alone—
he can't even stop me from doing this. Right so we're here. All Del Toro has to do is go here go here and the fight ends. I've won. But he doesn't do that. Instead he slashes and then shoves this into the arm. Which is unpleasant. You don't want that, but that allows Jones to come with his left hand and shove it into Del Toro's throat. Was it like a choke attempt? Yeah I don't think that would work, because if I
have the upper hand— Put your—and then do a choke on me—
Yeah, like that? Yeah so do a real choke. As hard as you can. Yeah it's going to change my voice, but I'm going to retain my knife and I'm going to punish Chad for that. So that's not going to work. It's going to make me change my voice and make me sound really ridiculous, But that's all it's going to do So that would not stop me from finishing my job. I would also add, there's like a wristlock control In grappling wristlocks are cool the problem with them as weapons is there's
not a strong control system behind them so I don't know also how valid you could hold
someone still like that with them having a free arm in regards to movement [Logan] Right.
[Chad] and possibly striking. [Logan] Sure
[Chad] So I don't even know how realistic that is to that exchange. So now the question is, did Jones redeem himself from Under Siege? In my opinion, absolutely! Much better fight scene. Much more realistic. There were still problems with it and again
the fight coordinators of this are very seasoned very well respected knife people. so I feel that any criticisms I have are purely for production So for example the dropping of the knife, that was clearly Hollywood,
that wouldn't have happened and no one that teaches knife work would have recommended anything like that. That Mexican standoff where Jones did Home Alone and Del Toro
basically attacked the arm rather than going for the jugular that too purely production. The knives were really cool. You can see again the Tom Brown Tracker Knife
that's cool even the the homemade knife was a cool element. Was it realistic, I don't think so. Because of those elements of it, I give it a B+ instead of in the A category. Still excellent and this was one of the first films that really showed knife
work specifically kali work which I really love and if you haven't seen this film it's worth a watch. Hey everyone! Thanks so much for watching. If you want to find out more about my school or The Hunted (2003) read the description. And guys, if you want to support us,
