today we're going to talk about killing winter weeds before i begin it's real important i'm actually we're actually working on the finalization of our bermuda lawn guide and our zoysia lawn guide and we're going to let you know via email so make sure you sign up for the email list i'll address that in a minute i will talk to you about the myth that pre-emergents impact have an impact on weed seeds which they don't the next thing we'll do is we'll actually i went to home depot the other day and i bought a whole bunch of over-the-counter products and what i'll do is in this video i'll talk to you about the labels i'll talk to you about where you can use the product when you can use the product but one of the things i want to stress i didn't cover in this video is that i really like treating winter weeds because i don't have the fear of hurting my lawn if you have a lawn that's dormant so if you have a bermuda lawn zoyja lawn this is an easy time of year to kill weeds because your lawn is pretty much asleep you don't put indiscriminate killers like roundup down because it's still you can still kill your lawn but you don't have that fear of burning a lawn because it's 85 or 90 degrees outside so in today's video we'll cover multiple products over the counter products i'll we'll talk about the labels how important the reading the labels are on these products i'll show you a resource center i'll actually come out here and i'll treat this perennial rye and i'll probably go out and also treat the zoysia which is out front which is actually kind of dormant a lot to cover sit back hold on [Music] so before we start this i'm actually upstairs and i'm starting to work on the zoysia lawn guide i will send out an email when all this stuff comes out that's probably the only way you're gonna know about it so make sure you go over to the website and on the website uh you will see a thing that says sign up for the email list get on that list it's not a marketing list we don't send out emails maybe six a year there are notifications that come up when we uh post up videos but six emails a year is about what we send out and it's usually important information plus we're gonna be doing a giveaway this year it's a pretty big giveaway it's close to five thousand dollars and it's only going to be done for people that are on the email list so get on it let's move on so in our last video one of our last videos and talking about pre-emergence we learned an important factor and what is that pre-emergents have no impact on weed seeds nothing matter of fact if you go to google and you type in edu extension pre-emergents kill weed seeds you'll get about 50 results that all say the same thing let me read you one of them i actually sent it to my phone this is from i think this was one of the nevada state extension office it's a common misperception that pre-emergent herbicides kill seeds directly instead when sprouting seeds encounter the herbicide cell division in the young root system system is inhibited resulting in the death of the young seedling got it so it has no impact on weed seeds so what does that mean it means that we actually want our weed seeds to germinate so that the pre-emergent can stop the root growth and the seedling will die off however our pre-emergent treatments are never perfect there's always going to be some weed seeds especially poana i don't know why polena seems to break through pre-emergence quite often and if you're dealing with poanna it's a pain in the button this is about the time of year you're going to see it so today we're going to focus on killing off wintertime weeds that will often carry over into the spring number one one tool that you're going to need if you're going to go to lowe's or home depot and you're going to look for i'm going to talk about some of these over-the-counter products the one thing you're going to need or at least i need are reading glasses why is that it's because you really need to read these labels you need to understand can i use this on bermuda grass can i use this on fescue what kind of grass can i use this on and sometimes it won't say on here clearly then you might have to open up this little panel back here and what happens when you open up that panel it's so small you can't even read it i always forget my glasses and i'm even asking people to borrow them bring a pair of reading glasses if you need them so you can read these bottles the next thing i'm going to do in the description below i always put up a web page and on that webpage i am going to link to a resource center and it's a do my own resource center and here's what you can do once you pull up this page you'll be able to go in there on this one page and you'll be able to type two or three keywords that's what you want just want the keywords bermuda bermuda poana when you do that you're gonna see commonly asked questions will pop up based on that that they've already answered and it will show you a related product same thing so let's say maybe you have clover in fescue type that in there and it will come up and you'll see some previous answers and it'll show the related product that you can order from them it's a great tool i use this all the time if i have a weird weed or someone has a weird weed and they want to kill it it's a great resource to have but today um i want to give you three rules when you're looking at these products rule number one is it made for my type of grass so you have to know that's the number one rule is it safe for bermuda grass is it safe for fescue is it safe for zoysia is it safe for saint augustine whatever you have so that's the number one filter when you're looking at products like this that you're going to want to look at is safe for my grass a lot of times they'll say where to use next the type of weed is it going to kill the weed that you have so you have to understand what weeds you have do you have clover do you have poana do you have chickweed what kind of weed do you have that's out there in the winter time so understand what weed you have and they will usually have a list of weeds that it will kill so make sure to kill the weed that you want number three the next rule is most of these are going to tell you that there's a certain temperature range that they're effective on so what you want to do is you want to use a phone app and you want to look at your 10 day forecast and you what you want to do is you want to watch for a little bit of a warm-up period now i call these weed killing windows these weed killing windows all come in all the time especially in the southeast where you'll have you know lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s and it's not too good but all of a sudden you get a couple days come in the temperatures are up in the 60s you know in january or whenever that's a great time these things remember your weed has to be alive and it actually has to be growing so if you can find a period where it's going to be sunshine and 60 degrees coming through that's when you want to spray this stuff you don't want to spray a weed killer when it's 25 degrees and frozen outside you want that weed active and grown okay so let's open up some of these bottles and let me give you examples you're going to have to excuse the background noise there's a swimming pool being installed a couple houses over so they're back there digging it with heavy equipment so you might hear that so i'm going to open up a couple of these labels so let me give you an example i have zoysia out front and i have a few weeds not many i have perennial rye back here and i have a few weeds starting to pop up so obviously i can't use the same weed killer on this that i can out there or can i it's a good question so let's find out so this grass looks absolutely amazing by the way this perennial rye came up super strong now someone was talking about all my p-spots and i have reseeded them so i've just thrown some seed down in there you can see that they're starting to sprout back up and the only thing i'm putting on this right now is i'm putting down green chalker and that's it i throw down green chakra light coat once a week i'm done i'm even throwing it on our bamboo on all of our new plantings back here it's a great little product to use but let's look at some of the weeds i got popping up here what is that that may be dollar weed right there this is um some kind of wild flower weed i don't know what that is i've got a few of those popping up uh looks like i got a little clover maybe here that looks like maybe a little bit of clover but you can see a little bit of weeds coming in here so i have an established perennial rye and i have some more broad leaf weeds coming up so i'm going to read the label for that so one of the things i did is i ran down the lows and i bought just about every weed killer they had for you guys just to give you an example first i'm going to show you two of my favorites at this time of the year at least and that is the image brand now this can be a little bit confusing because this is the regular image that most people think about and then this is a different product they make this is image lawn weed and crab grass killer these two products kill different prop kill different weeds and can be used on different lawns this normal image as an example is targeted towards grassy weeds you can use this on warm season grasses you can use this on your bermuda on your zoysia but you cannot use this on a regular grassy type lawn like a rye or a fescue you can't do that so let me i've remembered my glasses i'll probably have to open this up this one actually says it tells you right on the back what you kill uh dollar weed wild onion sand bur annual bluegrass which is poa anawa uh and it's for use in established bermuda grass buffalo grass centipede saint augustine zoysia grass blah blah blah but not on cool season grasses got it so if you have poana that's the one you want to use this will not kill po anna but this can be used on uh fescues let me see let me make sure i'm saying this right this is more of a broad leaf this product can be applied to the following established turf grasses kentucky bluegrass ryegrass perennial tall fescue bent grass boba warm season turf grasses bermuda grass common and hybrid zoysia grass and bermuda grass but this one is focused more so on broadleaf weeds another product that's out there man they're really digging today another product that's out there is roundup i'm not a real big fan of this because this only kills 90 weeds and let's see where you can use this this kills dollar weed clover dandelion yellow nuts edge um i don't know st augustine bermuda grass buffalo grass zoysia grass kentucky bluegrass tall fescue so this is a pretty wide use product but it doesn't kill a whole bunch of weeds next one i grab spectracide 460 weeds kills yellow nutsedge but where can i use this and the funny thing about this is yes okay so it treats blue grass fescue zoysia bermuda perennial rye grass so i can use this on both my lawns but let's see if this will actually treat poana hawa anawa so again if you're trying to kill poana this isn't going to do it even though it can be used this is a great i really like this product more so in the springtime because it actually has kind of a long-term effect on it um i really like this but again i don't think we're going to be treating this is going to kill poana so for back here i can use this product here it says it's safe for perennial rye out front of my zoysia if i have any power out there i can spray it with this tooth so basically you it just goes to show you that you really have to actually read these labels carefully don't just grab something that says safe on bermuda you have to go through that process now remember the weed has to be actively growing for it to absorb this chemical and for it to die off so don't come out here when it's 28 degrees and start spraying wait for that winter weed window to come in so i've got a nice warm day it's sunny it's going to be high 60s and this weekend where we are at the beach it's going to be in the 70s high 70s this weekend great time to kill winter weeds so i've read my label rule number one yes i can use it on the perennial rye grass rule number two will it kill the weeds that i have it says it will so we're gonna put this on and i'm just gonna go back here and give it a spray and uh we'll see what happens that's one of the reasons why i like these products and a lot of people like these products because once you determine that it's the right grass right for the right grass for the right weed just pop it on the end of a hose spray it and treat it then you're just going to leave it just leave it alone you don't want to water it you don't want to put it on before rain just read the instructions on the bottom so let's walk down let's take a look usually a lot of these weed killers you might see some impact in the first 24 hours but usually in the wintertime everything works slower so you may have some real slow effect now i will warn you if you're trying to kill poe anawa poana as we call it georgia a lot of that weed killer has to be absorbed through the roots so there's a difference some of these killers are absorbed by the foliage and some of it's absorbed by the roots so if you're trying to kill poana not only do you have to apply it then you have to wet it in wet it in and then wait and it can be slow don't be rushed it can take two or three weeks for poana to turn yellow so i sprayed it yesterday watch out for girls for the poo back here and uh let's see do i see any yellowing or the weeds back here yet maybe a tad bit maybe a tad bit that's kind of hard to tell in the last video we talked about i can actually see some yellowing over here in the last video we talked about putting down pre-emergent on new lawns and new saw important video to watch and you want to wait until that lawn is dormant and you have a small window where you can put down some pre-emergent so my front lawn i'm getting ready to apply some pre-emergent and i'll probably put some down here this is established now so i need to put down some more pre i need to put down some pre-emergent here to stop any more weed seeds from germinating because they're just going to keep germinating and germinating even though i kill them and kill so you want to stop them first but overall i really don't see a lot of death yet again this will probably take a good two or three days for this stuff to kick in so don't forget guys read your labels make sure you go through those three steps and uh don't forget to sign up for the email list because that's how i'll notify you about the new guides new products everything that's coming out i'll talk to you later [Music]
