We are on the hunt for the rarest,
most remote and most elusive waterfalls
in the world. Here, at the very top of the planet,
deep in the Arctic Circle, this magical ice waterfall runs straight off
the glacier's surface into the ocean. and will be a whole new kayaking experience -We go with the kayak.
-Then? -And then we go...
-Oh! -Over the waterfall.
-What? There are several challenges
to overcome before we can even think about running them. But, first, we have to find them. ANIOL:First, we travel to the very
top of Norway and mainland Europe. And from there we headed north
to the remote islands of Svalbard, deep inside the Arctic Circle. We have just left the world's
most northerly town, Longyearbyen, and are now sailing
even further north aboard this polar research vessel. Ooh! This one's spinning. Oh, my God. We are aiming for the uninhabited
glacial islands in the east. We have a rough idea
of where they will be, but we don't know for sure
what we are going to find Into the fog. Wow. It's so thick. It's impressive that
Captain Benni can sail through this. He's the man. If something go wrong,
it's me to blame. Where is the wall? there! -I can see.
-No, this is not the wall. Bro, that's a wall. It's there. Look at that. -The wall is there?
-Yeah. It's the fucking wall right there. Finally, we are here. Wow. But it's quite high, huh? -Yeah.
-It's way bigger than I thought. -It's quite high.
-Quite high. So, like today, we just look
and try and find the waterfall. Then we try and find a way
to access the ice safely. Oh, fuck. Imagine that happens
when we're there. We just saw a big piece of ice
fall down and it created this huge wave. And you start thinking,
what if it's us down there? When we go up,
we'll be sometime down there. So, oh, scary. That was a big piece. We really need to take a look
from close with the small boats. I'm sure we'll find nice waterfalls. Wow. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Man, see how the water has made,
uh, made its way. This is going to fall any time, huh?
Behind us. All right. Yeah. Yeah, it will come
down eventually. It's pretty, but... It's good, yeah? That's good. We are looking for lots of water,
hydrated at the bottom, and that provides us soft landings. There's lots of waterfalls. It's just hard to find them
with enough water. Small and sketchy. There's about 160ks of cliffs,
so we'll keep looking. I'm sure we'll find something good. Oh, my God! This is fucking perfect. Wow. That is amazing. I'm not gonna go to... So I really think
we might just have found the most beautiful waterfall
I've ever seen. And now the main thing is
just getting up there. Uh, we found this other place
where the ice wall is way lower. It's a good access point and way easier than up there
where the waterfalls are. The ice wall is much larger here,
probably about 20m. So we can't get any closer. We are going to have to walk
almost 10k's across the ice. Our guides have come up with a pretty
smart plan to get up to the ice, but now we need to check
with our captain Benni and see if he's okay with that. Fingers crossed. Oh, so this was the one
you are thinking about. Oh, the one on the bow.
Get closer. Yeah, we will make it somehow. -Yeah.
-Okay. -If you're happy we can go, Benni?
-Yeah. Yeah. He is right. No route is without fix. [ALL LAUGHING] All right. So now the plan is
to get a ladder up to the ice. Philip will get up the ladder,
set up a rope, and from there,
he'll be able to pull us up, so. It's dangerous to be under the ice, so we got to do it quick and get out of there
as fast as possible. From what we have scouted
from the drones, it doesn't look like it will be easy. So we will need to be prepared
for river crossings, crevasses and much more. On top of our usual kayaking gear, we have a lot of specialist equipment
for this task. Ice-climbing equipment,
supplies, GPS radios, polar bear protection, and a ladder. Go light, they said. Didn't happen. [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] What is the distance now,
over to the ice? I think 10 meters closing. Distance 5 meters closing. Distance 3 meters closing. Nothing. Hit the rubber,
and checking forward. Benni,
you happy if we go, no? Now maybe if you're happy with that,
we can try. Before lights went out,
they will climb up. [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] -Hold on that.
-Hold on. And then when he's up,
we take the ladder away. -Okay.
-We back out. Back out. Back out. Now we can go back out
to the sea, Benni. I'm coming, start now slowly. After that, they shouldn't... Now it's time for us to get up there. There's a ladder set up. Phil is on top,
and he's going to belay us. From there we're gonna hike
all the way to the waterfall, and if it looks good,
then we're just gonna drop in and kayak down the waterfall. It's on now. No turning back. Okay. We are going. Good luck, guys. [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] I'm very happy I don't have to climb or jump off it. [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] PHILIP:
So finally, it's happening, huh? We are in the ice. Oh, how is that? I'll go a couple meters
and see how it is. -Yeah.
-And I think it's not gonna be pleasant,
but it'll work. At least I'm pretty sure
nobody has done that before. ANIOL: It's a trip of many firsts.
-Yeah. All right.
We're back in the ice. Yeah! We are in the ice. Only myself, Aleix, and Philip will
be going, so we can move faster. I can help you out with the ladder. -This ladder is heavy.
-Yeah. -Thank you.
-All right, Phil. One done. One done. Many more to go. But I'm afraid of taking a long time
all these crack in the ice. -I think maybe four, five hours.
-Yeah. If they do eight kilometers like that
in four or five hours, then they are fast. Now they were moving ten meters. How many you have? [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] ALEIX: I'll help you. -He is dancing.
-Yeah. Nice expedition
just to get to the waterfall. Yew! Interesting. This is the first big river
that we have to cross. Phil is walking up. Looks like there's a good spot there. It takes time,
many, many rivers to cross. We've probably crossed over 30
by now, so... probably as good as it gets, I think. PHILIP: All right? [WATER GUSHING] PHILIP: Step by step, eh? PHILIP: I guess we didn't bring it
for nothing. Yeah, buddy. ALEIX: Like, you see this
is not too big and it still took us some time, so. PHILIP: Let's get rolling.
ALEIX: Yeah. ANIOL: From there.
PHILIP: Yeah. I'll jump into the shallow part. PHILIP: Good morning. Way too shallow.
Jump in the middle. Better. [UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING] -All right.
-It's not over. I hate this fucking ladder. Oh, pain in the ass for you? Oh, man. If we end up making it, I think we'll have to name
this waterfall Phillip's Ladder. ALEIX:
Aniol is struggling a little bit? Just keep smashing. Philip, Philip, Arran. PHILIP:Yeah, Arran, go ahead. What is your ETA
onto the front, you think? PHILIP:We are, I think, about a couple hundred meters
away from the river, but quite high up. Standby. I will, uh, have a chat
with Aniol and Aleix quickly. ARRAN:Uh, copy that. Um, well, I can check it right now. -Huh?
-Scouting for lazies haha. We're not sure what river
are we supposed to drop in. It's a maze of thousand rivers. Therefore, we're gonna have
a quick scout and make sure we're on the right one. ANIOL:We need to make sure
we get the right river here. There is a huge maze, and we don't want to end up
going the wrong direction, and off the wrong part of the cliff. ANIOL: I think the boat is that
thing, so this must be it. It's got to be it.
It's like too much. Yeah, that's a boat so...
Yeah, this is the big river. PHILIP: Yeah. Finally, we're here. [TRANQUIL MUSIC PLAYING] That was really fast. It's bigger than I thought
and way more complex. The entrance is tricky
and so it's actually pretty scary. Not easy, but, uh, it's beautiful
and looks so incredible. Almost better for me to stop. Oh, I need a radio to let them know,
or you'll be there. -We'll be there.
-Yeah, we'll be... -Yeah.
-All right, Phil. -Tough, man.
-Thank you so much. No worries. Good luck. Enjoy it. Be safe, yeah? Thank you, guys. [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] PHILIP: Arran, Arran. Philip. ARRAN:Go ahead, Philip. Go ahead. Aniol will get ready and I'll give you a countdown
of five seconds before we drop. [TRANQUIL MUSIC PLAYING] -Yeah?
-I'm ready. Aniol dropping in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and drop. [TRANQUIL MUSIC PLAYING] ANIOL:Okay, okay,
approaching the lip. PHILIP:Ah, man. The most scary part of everything. ALEIX:Aniol, you have any doubt? I repeat, Aniol, you have any doubt? My pulse is going up. [DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING] ALEIX:5, 4, 3, 2, 1. ALEIX: This time, we're waiting.
Fuck! Hey, guys. All good down there? Yeah, first he dropped
and the guy's on the top. [UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING] You all right? Oh, yeah, man. What do you got to say to that? You can't say anything about that.
That was just amazing. No, all of you guys,
I am so thankful for your help and, Philip, he deserves...
I don't know. he's the fucking man eh Philip's Ladder. [MUSIC INTENSIFIES]
