[Music] hey guys thanks so much for joining me for on the couch with pouch like comment share subscribe if you're on YouTube and go to Matt pouch com sign up for the email newsletter today I have an interview with one of gospel music's favorite soprano singers Karen okay thank you so much for joining me thank you I am so glad this finally worked out well we have we tried to do it in 2015 at national court exhibition because I've actually said this for several the interviews legacy 5 there's a lot of artists here that we don't see a lot throughout here there are some artists like greater vision the booth brothers that we do a lot you know the Jubilee stuff we do a lot of the concerts with them but like you guys we don't see you a whole lot so I don't have the opportunity to do this so last year we tried to do it and it didn't work and to be honest with you the questions I have for you today are the questions that was submitted I'm in 2015 I kept it for a whole year hoping that in 2016 we could make it happen I am so glad this happened even though it was a little like getting to the interview it doesn't matter guys thank you and I'm so glad to be here and it's such a beautiful day outside today it is and we're this is one of the only ones we're going to do this year outside so it's beautiful out here there's not a lot of people around right now which is perfect there's a beautiful river behind us or in front of us behind you guys and and it's just so nice out here so we thought we'd bring it outside do the interview out here we're not on a nice soft couch but a concrete house or concrete this way down that we could have brought some Soroka so those down there so Karen the first question I have for you is Kristy Devine thank you for your question she wants to know who is your biggest gospel music I guess that my greatest gospel music influence would be rex meeting because he was my boss for almost 10 years he was such a great a great man a great example who the great ball he was such a classy man you know he's very straight but yet he was fun and so I even found myself to this day when we're trying to make decisions for New River I think what would Rick do so I would say he's probably not greatest influence and as far as a person in gospel we could have so many but but I think that Rick's would have to be the top affiliate so share did you mention Rex share one of your favorite Rex memories oh my goodness there are so many and matter of fact I'm I guess one of the sweetest memories was when my dad passed away I had left the mainland and we had decided not to go on the road that particular night day they have my father's funeral and he and Kelly and the family they came and playing at my dad's funeral and and I just thought that got me up so much to me that they would do that yeah well I guess probably a couple of years later he we were working with the mainland's and we will walk him back to the bus he was about to go to his bus to go to my face and he says well II said I guess you know he was a man of a lot of words and but he said well I gave care and since your dad's not here I guess I can just see your dad and I just thought that was the greatest compliment and that just felt that Missoni feel so good and so objects will always remember that but he was always a jokester and and he teased me out relentlessly I mean like it was he was always teasing me about something if anything ever bothered me you know just little things he would tease me about that very thing so I mean so he was really a funny person as well everybody needs a prankster absolute around especially or a jokester especially on the bus but you got 45 feet that you're on for a straight you know and so you need somebody that you can go to me and give me a good joke we're going to tell you what he did I don't know if I should tell this or not but business is now on the couch and since these are energy this is immunity that is like off the cups right yeah go ahead we were when I was working with the mainland's and we were working this fair and so they were catering food and so I walked off the best he was coming down the hill and I was about to walk up the hill and you know of course you had the ferris wheels all of it the rides go in there and I said Rick for catering he picked those active he goes to go the rest up the hill take a left and go all the way to the end and it'll be right there on the left I said okay so I went up the hill to the left and when I got to the end there were some fair people in there like outside taking a shower and I screamed and when I did he heard me and so when I turned around and I started running back and I remember running down the hill and I could see I can see him to this day he was standing at the front of the bus outside with his hands over his stomach bent over laughing he just thought that was the funniest thing and I but he was always just you know always telling me the rock ain't giving me wrong direction that's you know just always funny yes you know and it's the thing those are memories that I will always cherish and I've just got so many so many great memories of wrecks and being able to be with my favorite group which was the man's I was within for almost ten years and of course I was able to travel with Alex laughs ever and the lefeber is one year prior to the mailings which I got that job because of race and so with it you know those days are days that I'll never forget and now we've had me River since January of 91 so 2016 we started the year off celebrating 25 years as new river and so I'm able to travel with my sister my husband my kids and it's just a dream come true you know as the natural protect Convention 2016 seemed like it all week all I heard with artists and even industry people like Adam Leonard and Ed Harper and you know people talking about their dream jobs and this is my dream journal awesome I'll be one of those people you know that honestly you and you will be thinking this out they'll be rolling me out or I'll be walking out slowly on the stage and you'll look at my head spinning you're safe tell her to go tell her something with me to go home I will be one of those people okay because I love what I mean be forewarned you're going to be listen to her singing until she can't sing that's it again I mean till it's good it's gone it's that the Lord will call me home that's that'll be it and then I'll be done oh maybe he'll just come and get us all well speaking of your singing you are a great singer just phenomenal and everyone loves to hear you saying and Christian Johnson would like to know do you do vocal warm-ups you know what I used to be very faithful at doing women but you know lately it seems like you know if every now and then maybe you know I'll be in the back of the best singing along with a CD or you know we're maybe something on TV or whatever but and but I don't do it as much as I used to but I used to be very faithful at it which I need to do it so if you are a singer always do vocal warm-ups no don't do as I do do as I say I would but I took I mean I've taken voice growth and when I was in college I was a piano major and I took classical piano for 11 years and so I went when I took voice lessons listen what does accent it's harder but when I same classical and so that listen you know it would be like Elly May Clampett trying to say you know whatever but at but I will say this to all of the aspiring singers always take voice lessons you know and if they say well you know we have you know it's operatic style that's great because that teaches you how to breathe it opens your your range and and I say I mean you can hear this and you know hear how I'm talking and hear how I say but you can always apply what you're learning and then make make it your own and so but I always say learn the instrument and learn what you're doing right and for your learning after all of these years I've been traveling all night in 80 I'm still learning and we're all still trying to continue to do a better job at our craft our crashes you know I'm a bass singer you're a soprano so we are always trying to develop and get better it's so continuing to do a better job at what you do and before you know what I challenge you and me why don't we do this okay and y'all have to stay for this interview however long it goes it can we make sing a duet we had to create a big hold on home okay we have a bass and a terror oh no hi this is what you all love you could care less about the lead singer and a baritone and all right this is on the couch 4000 I control this interview okay you have no control here quick you're not going to tell me what to do and why very straight nice at mama sites say yeah maybe we'll daddy sang bass mama sang caner there you go you got it there you go okay so you know you're speaking of tenor singing so there was actually a question on here that has something to do with dinner actual tenor singing West Jenkins thank you for your question Wes back in 2015 he wants to know what's it like seeing looking for a city with Brian free it is crazy because Brian free he sings like a woman and he sings higher than I do and so and right here I mean Brian free there is no limit to his to his voice and he is so good I mean Brian to me is one of the best tenors ever and so he does a great job so that's a lot of fun and we scream I mean it but it's a lot of fun okay gene Beck wants to know how do you always seem so perky well you know I'm not always perfect I mean you know I mean the truth comes up that's it but I have always been young at heart and I've always been a very silly person I guess it's just my personality you know now you're touched on the silly thing yeah and you always get the whole blonde joke stuff every minute that you're at is the blonde Jessie yeah you know I'm really not blonde and I'm really not done but it's one of those things where I'm I'm a glass half-full person that's that you know I always try to see the good in people have I been disappointed in life many times have but I'd rather take a chance I'd rather take a chance on people I'd rather take a chance to believe them and and just be happy I mean I just am have always been a happy person well I've got something for you here since you said you're not really blonde and you're really smart well hot so here's a this is going to be a challenge for you I'm going to do something I've not done before and on the couch with pouch I'm putting you on the spot I would love to hear you sing the lyrics to Amazing Grace to the tune of when we all get to heaven I take a moment and think about that and while you're thinking about it I just want to tell you guys the only couch with pouch is being it's not being brought to you by this week but one of them my great friends to seeing Newsradio has let me use use their room in their couch for several of the interviews so be sure to check out singing news radio.com and listen that maybe they play the best southern gospel music so you absolutely want to go check that out they have an app you can listen to it online however you really want to with the media and everything so I hope that has given Karen enough time to think about this so you think you can do this Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me oh where to go thank you you just know I did it you did it right yeah no idea I so when I decided I'm going to do that I had to figure it out for myself right because then if you couldn't do it I was gonna have to say well this is how you do it right what are you doing see I would do it Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now I see yeah I mean it it's close enough that's awesome good job oh here we go you always try and take control you supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is it to the tune of amazing brave I mean I got a little bit there you do it are you d knob very much so for that yes it was good that's good so I was that was excellent good job I'm so proud of you um Ruth Hebert wants to know have you perfected the carrot cake oh my carrot cake you know what I have not perfected it now the taste is always consistent but every time I make that carrot cake it always falls even if the weather's good weather is bad I've tried everything I know and I do not know what I'm doing but that cake fall every time I just gives me more excuses with more icing edges and the true doesn't look like Singh exactly and it's how my cream cheese icing exit go mmm very good so I want to try your carrot cake well maybe I just want to try the icing oh it's good it's good do you like character I do yeah I have to make you seriously so this is another good question Smoky Mountain Santa wants to know Danny Jones gives you a hard time what do you want to tell on Danny Jones to get back at him this is your chance Danny Jones to get back at Danny for all the hard times he's giving you and I would say and baby Jones gives me such a hard time I would have to say he really is not as funny if he think he is so he thinks he's a comedian but he's really not so he's really not funny at all that's what I would say about Danny Jones there you go take them daddy for all as hard times you gave her you're not funny now you're not okay time for that stop zone are you ready for they're ready you know what it is guys do you have a certain unspecified amount of time to answer the questions if you don't get these questions and the answers in in the amount of time I go directly to the next question number one if you're scared half to death two times what happens to you time how many strips of bacon do you get from a pig time what do you call a fog of crows time how much lipstick does the average woman use in five years can a kangaroo hop if you lift his tail off the ground no all right what I wrote on that you've got the last one correct yes I had no idea I just said no it was a yes or no no okay so if you're scared half to death two times what happens to you you're still scared has to be know what happened are you scared home to this I don't think your dad yeah I don't know that I'm saying I was not blond but I do eggs what did you know who you're interviewing here yes that's why I asked you that I'm not you need that how many how many strips of bacon do you get from a pig you said one like another try because I don't think yeah happy trip the bank infirmities yeah well what's that a pig little pig we don't know it's approximately 300 really yeah how do you know what you put on a sick Pig you know what what kinds what you put on a sick disappointment next question years her what her height on average a woman uses her height in the rain every five years I don't know nothing about how much lipstick you have a lot of lips that you know what I could believe that I can't believe that can a kangaroo hop if you lifted two tail off the ground your answer was no and that was ding ding ding correct well I'm glad I got one well I don't know did I fail that test well one out of five was that 20% let's ask those kids at home that are watching would you pass it you got a 20% in class no but hey you got one some people don't even some people don't even get to say a
