and now without further ado let's go [Music] first story want me to clean a bin of balls how about you do it instead about 15 years ago i worked at a green hardware store in the midwest u.s that helps you save big money i had just graduated college and was going to be leaving in a few weeks to start my new job as a teacher my manager and i got along really well but he didn't like that i was leaving soon we had this huge bin of inflated balls that were obviously dirty nobody wanted to clean them and it was going to take a long time note when working in a school you need to take training on cleaning up blood blood-borne pathogens in many schools the teacher cleans it up the blood-borne pathogen training at this place of work said that you contact your manager to clean it up i start to take out the 30-plus balls to clean them in the bin when i see an old bloody band-aid i go to my manager and say that i can't clean the balls because of the bloody band-aid and how i'm supposed to report it to my manager to have them clean it up he tells me to get gloves and clean it up as he knows that i had the pathogen training for being a teacher cue malicious compliance with a big smile on my face i told him i didn't want to go against company policy so i can't clean it up i also said that i don't know which balls came in contact with the band-aid so i won't be able to clean them up either he was pissed knowing there was nothing he could do but clean the whole thing up he got the last laugh a few days later but that's another story he was a great manager and a great guy to be honest next story uproot the hedge let's just double check my grandmother lives in a city neighborhood where the houses are fairly close to each other she has always had a problem with her sour neighbor complaining about one thing or another so one day her neighbor notifies her that she believes that the hedge running down the property line separating the two driveways is on her land and she wants my grandmother to cut it down seems a little stupid as the hedge provides a small amount of privacy between the two homes and benefits both parties so my grandmother has no choice but to comply with her wish but first she hires a surveyor to come and determine exactly where the property line is turns out that the hedge is indeed on my grandmother's property it also reveals that the neighbor's garage is two feet over the property line onto my grandmother's property the look on her neighbor's face when she gets the report and is informed that she has to tear down her garage was worth the price of the survey they eventually settled and in the interest of peace my grandmother allowed her to buy the land on her property for several thousand dollars next story want me to move something without tying it down first you sure okay then meet bob bob as someone i know bob is a great guy he has worked hard to support his family his whole life i admire bob because he can fix a lot of things on his cars house etc he is almost entirely self-taught and has a lot of common sense despite not being book smart which is why i was astounded that he had me do this bob can also be stubborn as all hell and gets to be a really jerk when he is stubborn bob's wife found a beautiful roll top desk at a yard sale she had wanted one for years bob asked me to drive to the yard sale with my pickup sure thing bob i don't mind helping you out a bit bob's wife was excited her eyes were gleaming it was huge heavy as hell somewhere around 250 pounds and old it was also a very nice desk so bob and i and the cellar get it manhandled into my pickup bed i grab straps and bob snaps at me we don't have time for that let's get it back to the house i know damn well it isn't going to hold still and i tell him so yes it will it is a big heavy desk drive really slowly with your hazards on now me who actually paid attention to physics in high school and you dear readers know where this is going i protested let's lay it down or strap it bob overruled me bob's wife said something no he didn't want the desk marred up by straps i said something again bob got pissed and yelled screw the straps let's go just drive like i said i said screw it i did exactly what he said despite it being my truck after all bob had done a lot of free work on my pickup for me i was doing him a favor so whatever let him be stubborn we left the yard sale at 10 miles per hour with a dozen or so people staring after us slack jawed bob and his wife were in their corvette behind me so i was doing exactly what he said driving really slow with my hazard lights blinking we make it the few blocks to the main drag that will take us most of the way to bob's house i get in the turn lane to wait the desk starts to shift the turn lane turns green and i edge out at about five to seven miles per hour the top heavy desk tilted started to shift then the wheels on one side came up nothing you do at that point is going to work to stop it from tilting physics wins again bob's wife's new desk died a horrible death in the middle of powers boulevard in colorado springs one warm spring day in 1993. i could hear her wailing through the open window rest in peace desk sorry bob's wife i wanted you to have that thing you were so happy edit for those asking the whole thing was anticlimactic to be honest we gathered the desk up and bob attempted to repair it it was broken into a lot of pieces though my understanding is it worked for a bit but when they moved out of state they threw it out rather than try and move it next story doug the statistician this goes back more than 10 years ago i got a part-time job working for the county this was in an urban area in california my job was to call every non-profit and church organization to ask about their after-school programs for youth it was dull but i got paid and the work wasn't hard i used public transportation and my bike to get to work and often arrived late one day the project director called a staff meeting he introduced doug that statistician in the protect and told us that doug had compiled a spreadsheet of our hours i braced myself for a bumpy ride but then things took a weird turn the project leader announced that we had not logged enough hours if he did not use all the money allotted to this project his budget would be cut next year i nearly fell out of my chair every week after that i inflated my hours on my timesheet as the weeks went on i got bolder and submitted timesheets saying i worked 9.5 and 11-hour days actually working no more than five those days required overtime pay at time and a half no matter what i submitted i never got a push back it was a great summer in my off hours i practiced pottery and got moderately good on the wheel at the end of the project i learned that the entire study was to produce results that would support a predetermined outcome we were supplying data to support a use of funds not investigating a problem to determine a solution i learned that county government can be a refuge for the incompetent later in life i learned that private corporations can also be a refuge for incompetence but my experience working a county job made a big impression on me next story just feed the pig some cheerios we have a miniature pig she's adorable at times and she's insufferable at times this pig is too smart for her own good we use cheerios to bribe her outdoors to go potty she'll wrap her hooves on the back door to tell us she needs to go but she's figured out our game multiple times per day she'll tell us she needs to go out but she doesn't need to go potty she just wants a snack queue tonight it's finally 20 21 i bring the animals outside so they can pee before we go to bed not five minutes later the pig starts hoofing the back door to go out again i call her on her bull crap open the door and shuffle step her outside a tactic i use to educate her that when she hoofs the back door she will go outside whether she wants to or not wifey yells just give her some cheerios knowing pigs hate cold weather almost as much as they love cheerios i grab a handful of cheerios i then walk outside to the farthest corner of our backyard pig in tow and scatter the cheerios over a relatively wide area now i'm back inside snug and warm and piggy just now wrapped at the back door to be let back in she's now wrapped up in a blanket snuggled and warm and i'm preparing to sleep past 6am without being woken by a pig hoofing at the back door next story you calculate my work time based on phone login fine all come to work technically not late welcome everyone to my first reddit post it was my first it job i was responding to level 1 technical issues over the phone we had this in browser panel for logging in and out of the queue when you were ready to take calls you clicked a button for start when you were going for a break 5 minutes every hour plus 15 minutes lunch you hit pause same goes for stop leaving work on a typical day i would get to work on time turn the computer on log into the voip system and after let's say two minutes of all of that start taking calls my supervisor didn't like it he said that i am supposed to start answering the phone at eight o'clock sharp and that my work time starts only after i log in not when i come to work a little back and forth and i decided fine told him i would log in precisely at eight o'clock here's a thing about that web panel you can manipulate it using not only your mouse but also using javascript code that selects a html element and clicks it so over that day i made such a script i would leave my laptop on for the night and activate the script browser window remained open the next day i wasn't there at 8 o'clock but i was logged in my program detected the 8 o'clock mark and clicked me into the queue of course if i didn't answer the phone i would get in trouble so at eight hours zero minutes and one second it clicked again on the pause button i calmly went into the room made myself a cup of coffee had a little chat with co-workers and logged back in at 8 15. it took four working days for my supervisor to notice this and that's only because someone mentioned it to him we had a very short conversation he said that i can come to work at eight o'clock and start whenever i'm ready but i cannot tell my co-workers about this trick i told them i didn't care about this job at that point by the time i left at least four people were using my script i'm pretty sure he would fire me if he could but didn't really have any legal reason i left the company after the first contract three months since i figured i'm better than this like i said it was my first real it job and i've gotten some more serious offers since then i didn't do all of this to be able to come work late i was trying to point out how ridiculous that login system was next story called the police over a burger i will try to sum this up the best i can so it isn't long i got off work at about 11 48 p.m on new year's eve went on a really long date that ended sad and went to get dinner at 4 20. i ordered a burger at a burger place over their app and paid for it that way so it would be done when i got there i get there and the woman is very confused the manager is brought over and he laughs in my face saying well your problem is that we are selling breakfast i told them about how the app website and google says differently and they didn't care i sighed and asked for a refund which the woman said nope can't refund sorry after some back and forth i said fine then i'll call the police she replied back with do it now i wouldn't call the police over a cheeseburger but mine had bacon i called the non-emergency number and a police car came over then another when they pulled up i realized i just called the police over a damn hamburger end result i got basically a slip to come back any time the next day for free lunch which i just finished eating next story insist on speaking only a second language in class hold my bilingual dictionary let me preface this by saying i was a little craphead as a kid and part of me regrets being such a brat now i'm 30. it's compulsory to take a second language usually according to your racial group during your formal education years in singapore most of the malay 90s kids grew up speaking their mother tongue at home and excelled in it unless they had learning difficulties it's really hard to pick up a second language if you only use it for 45 minutes a day in class and i hated it people made fun of my accent asked me if i was lost and ended up in the wrong class and saw me as an outsider i also found it hard to follow the conversations when everyone spoke fast fast forward to when i was 13 and had just moved on to secondary school to my horror there was only one mother tongue class and we weren't going to be banded according to our abilities here i was ac student surrounded by native speakers and now i have to keep up with them the mother tongue teacher introduced herself by saying we would only speak in mother tongue during class and then went on a full-blown rant about race religion culture and identity of which i only understood 40 percent of the rant started because she noticed some of the girls had tweezed their eyebrows and it was against their religion or some crap like that part of the rant i recognized as mildly offensive towards those who did not subscribe to the same religion oh great i hate this teacher already i thought cue malicious compliance because i didn't like the teacher i made sure i brought my translator dictionary to keep in my locker and brought it to mother tongue class each time the day finally came when she asked me a question and i painstakingly attempted to look up every single word of what she said by the sixth word she gave up and asked me the sentence in english i then looked up every single word of my answer in english and directly translated it to malay the process took about ten minutes she never called my name again and i continued being the mediocre c student in malay for the rest of my formal education in singapore next story more tickets a combination of executive manglement laziness and too much work means that our i.t department is rarely on top of everything when it comes to my department this tends to manifest in two ways either they ignore our problems or a temporary workaround is developed which requires extra effort on our part and then they ignore the problem rendering the temporary workaround a permanent solution for entirely too long the most common solution it would offer was to tell us to cancel the offending order re-enter it and hope the glitch doesn't recur you may notice that means that my department is left doing significantly more work so it doesn't have to do theirs we would of course complain and be told to enter a ticket for any new issue in times past we would submit one ticket for any specific glitch no matter how many times it occurred to save i.t the trouble of having to close duplicate tickets but with their reticence to get anything done we had to get creative we started submitting a ticket for each new issue every instance of a glitch even if that particular glitch had already been reported on as happening on a different order the number of tickets we were submitting exploded we started submitting tickets for issues temporarily resolved six months ago in addition to any new glitches and there were a lot of issues since our new computer system hadn't been redlined before they pushed it out to us to make matters worse we even submitted tickets for orders that we went ahead and resolved on our own using the prescribed workarounds when it inquired about those tickets all they had to do was close them which was extra busy work for them mangelman started to become very upset with it over the massive amount of unclosed tickets and it started panicking asking us to hold off on submitting tickets we graciously back off for a week and allow it to clean up their cues but then they're back to their old habits of not fixing our problems so we turn up the heat again when it asked us to back off again the more polite among us told them this is what you asked us to do or we just want to keep you informed on the progress but our boss sarah flat out told it my team doesn't have time to cover for you do your job and solve our problems eventually eventually it got the message and started solving the underlying problems but even now there are some problems they are only getting to after two years of complaints and now we have reached the end of today's stories thank you for watching my video
