JUST IN: Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders Announces New Justice For State Supreme Court

cabinet and leaders in Arkansas's justice system thank you to justices Webb wood and Kemp for being here today just two weeks ago our State lost a legal Titan Justice wins service to Arkansas was immeasurable from his days as a hard charging Dallas County prosecutor to his decade at the highest reaches of our legal system Justice Winn could have been anything a pastor a politician a businessman and yet he chose instead to devote his life to Arkansas and the law for that I and our entire state are eternally grateful Brian and I continue to lift up the entire win family in our prayers today I have the responsibility of choosing a new Justice to fill justicewind's place on the Supreme Court until 2025. I am pleased to announce I have selected another former prosecutor and a U.S attorney Cody Hyland for this role Cody brings a lifetime of legal experience to the job from his early days as a staff attorney and state government and an aide to my dad who is also here today he made service to Arkansas the centerpiece of his career he was twice elected prosecuting attorney for the 20th Judicial District serving Faulkner Van Buren and Cersei counties and after unanimous confirmation by the United States Senate something that I think all of us would acknowledge doesn't happen for every nominee he served as U.S attorney for the eastern district of Arkansas from 2017 to 2020. under his leadership the office produced an unprecedented 82 percent increase in criminal cases in that time Cody's commitment to Law and Order is unparalleled after the end of the Trump Administration Cody became Chief legal counsel for the Arkansas Department of Public Safety and last year Cody stepped down from that role to join me in my campaign for governor he helped us Traverse the legal issues that come up with any high-profile campaign and headed up our law enforcement for Sarah coalition together we crafted the safer stronger Arkansas legislative package that I had the privilege of signing this year to clean up the crime on our streets and after the campaign our fellow Republicans selected Cody to lead the state party under this new Administration today like so many times before Cody is stepping up again and making another sacrifice to serve the people of Arkansas it will be impossible to fill Justice win shoes on the Supreme Court but Cody's Decades of experience even temperament and love for our state and the rule of law bring him closer than anyone else could he will be there to call balls and Strikes interpreting state law as it was written and leaving the legislating to the legislature Cody comes from the same mold as some of the finest jurors we have in the country today the same legal Minds who are finally bringing back strict originalism to our courts this is the first time Arkansas Supreme Court will have a conservative majority and I know it will have the same effect on our state as it has had on our country Cody's highest loyalty will be to the Constitution and the rule of law that's all we can ask from our justices and that is all that I have asked of him before turning the podium over to our newest Justice I want to give my deepest thanks to Cody and his entire family Jana Claire Caitlin John Reagan Ethan thank you for your support as you all enter this newest biggest role to serve Arkansas Cody congratulations [Music] thank you [Applause] well thank you for that I will confess to being a little bit conflicted today given the circumstances that necessitated today's announcement Justice wins passing was a loss for his family the courts and a loss for the state
