Just How Powerful is Excalibur?

I've said it before and I'll say it again our Toria Pendragon is my favorite character in all of fiction she protec she attack and she's snag she's equal parts noble chivalrous fierce and absolutely adorable she's the poster child for the feint series for a reason and yet strangely enough she's not one of the top tier 5 star servants in fait grand order that's just a video game though characters are always balanced and scaled to make games fair in animation in lore however our toriel holds her ground is one of the strongest servants around in no small part due to the sheer destructive might of her sword of promised victory Excalibur so to celebrate our Toria getting an animation update for FGL I'd like to dig through the lore and use all the resources at my disposal to determine an actual empirical estimate of just how much energy is packed into that blade when she lets it rip [Music] welcome back to otaku tycoon now our Toria received Excalibur is a package deal with its scabbard Avalon from the Lady of the lake Merlin asked her which of the two thus order at sheath was more useful when she chose the sword Merlin reprimanded her pointing out that Avalon essentially made her invincible in her possession what a shame then that it was stolen from her before she became a servant thus whenever she summoned as a heroic spirit she has to go without her most useful asset her only hope of using it again is to reunite with it during her time as a servant this means she's got to make do with the sword sad right not really considering that's one hell of a consolation prize according to the 2004 visual novel Excalibur is described as an anti fortress noble phantasm ranked a plus plus it takes her mana and converts it into a massive beam of light that when accelerated surges with kinetic energy it's so iconic that most of the time she holds its power back keeping it shrouded in invisible air to conceal her identity we could dig through stat sheets all day and debate how strong she is but I'd rather take a more practical approach by analysing the instances when she actually unleashes its wrath thus it's time to play a bit of death battle & Hues some science to determine the power of the holiest of Swords between faiths zero and stay night covering the two Grail wars are Toria participates in she uses Excalibur's uncloaked might just a little over seven times in zero she uses it to annihilate shield array and his Lovecraftian horror creature and again on e scanned ARS chariot in the fate route she obliterates Medusa's Bellerophon and unleashes at a handful of times to counter Gilgamesh's anima ilish in every war except for heaven's feel she uses Excalibur to destroy the lesser Grail each of these uses tells us a bit about how the sword works turns out she can limit its strength the fitter situation during her fights with his kandar and Gilgamesh she unleashes Excalibur as a sort of quick draw the damage is more localized that our Toria fires off Excalibur from atop a 50-story building Shiro confirms this by saying he takes the elevator up 40 stories and uses the stairs for the remaining 10 this can be used to determine the height of the building it'll be an estimate of course since not all stories are the same height after googling various estimates I'm gonna lowball it at about 4 meters per story this would make the building 200 meters tall from that vantage point Excalibur slide extends outward through the clouds as far as the eye can see for all we know that beam goes off into space but we can figure at least a minimum length given we know it's definitely as long as she rose line of sight toward the horizon turns out we can calculate that she rose line of side as well as his distance from the earth and the Earth's radius form a right triangle the earth has a radius of 6 million 378,000 137 meters add 200 more for the height of the building and we have two of three variables in the Pythagorean theorem you know a squared plus B squared equals C squared factor the equation plug in the numbers and we get the beams minimum length of 50 thousand five hundred meters for about 31 miles light novel describes it like so pouring all the strength into her body into the two arms grasping the hilt tightly the king of knights lifted the golden sword up high light gathered as if illuminating this holy sword was its ultimate duty the light condensed further merging into a blinding brilliance at the fierceness and purity of this beam of light no one could speak a single word it was the gallant figure of a knight who once shone the light of purification upon a battle ravaged world a darkness blacker than night unyielding for ten years undefeated in twelve battles these peerless feats of arms in this glory or eternal transcending time this shining sword itself is the nostalgic sorrowful and exalted dream of all warriors past present and future who stand at the brink of death on the battlefield the crystallization of the prayer named glory proudly uplifting this will ascertaining that this faith will be seemed to its end the king of eternal victory now loudly declared the true name of this miracle she held in her hands it was light galloped light roared the prana accelerated by the factor of the release dragon became a streak of light a swirling and surging torrent that devoured the sea demon together with the dark night a silent scream rose within the river water evaporating in an instant as every single atom composing the body of the giant sea demon that had been the embodiment of terror who were exposed to the scorching impact as beautiful as this is some of the details shown in the anime seemed to contradict what is described in fate/stay night in zero we seek idiots agooo riding on a somewhat large yacht taken from the harbor he uses it as his vantage point in sniping Ryunosuke but then he anchors it in the middle of the river he rides a raft to where he wants he scanned art to drop the sea monster and fires a flare to signal these coordinates he then rides behind our Toria as she's charging her noble phantasm our Toria herself is clearly facing the bridge that crosses the river and fate/zero mentions that this bridge is 665 meters long which also gives us the width of the river anyway she launches the beam and it parts the waters rushing toward the monster when it hits him it changes trajectory aiming straight up otherwise the beam would have kept going and destroyed the bridge but we know that doesn't happen this implies our Toria has way more control over the blasts than one might think after seeing the noble phantasm hundreds of times in various media this idea of the beam travelling forward striking its target and redirecting upward is consistent this is great because it means she can mostly concentrate the blast on her enemies without murdering everything inside but about that yacht if you play the Fate route there's a point where she wrote aches are Toria out on a date and on their way back are Toria notices a mountain of rubble in the river caused by the sinking of a ship she reveals that this ship was destroyed by her noble phantasm acting as a wall to block the beam from spreading she remarks out Khadija go put it there without her knowing this sure sounds like the yacht key it's a GU road into the center of the river but in the anime it never gets destroyed not only is it just tossed about by the surging waves it's even on the opposite side of the bridge meaning that the beam would have had to plow through the bridge first to reach it that and let's be honest there's no way a dinky boat like that would be able to halt the beam in the first place let alone form a mountain of junk in the river over ten years after we see chills monster devour a fighter jet and I'm sure it could do the same to a yacht no problem thus in order to halt Excalibur's blasts you're gonna need a bigger boat Dienst a knight has the right idea showing the wreckage of what appears to be a battleship or cargo ship problem is that wreckage is out by the harbor in the ocean not the river essentially what I'm trying to say is that fate/zero and fate/stay night have slightly different continuities that don't match up nas who was confirmed as such that zero inst a night our best thought of is similar but ultimately separate parallel worlds nerd semantics really so in stay night the story is that our Toria used her noble phantasm at some point and had a large ship take the aftershock whereas in zero that's not an issue since the beam halts upon reaching her target let's talk boats in naval warfare ships are often destroyed when the force of an explosion puts enough stress on the whole to crack it to that end a direct hit isn't necessarily more effective than the angle that force is applied from we know this ship is a surface ship and after digging through the stats on various torpedoes designed to target such ships I think a reasonable assumption would be the force of something like a u.s. mark 20 which contains two hundred and thirty kilograms of TNT thankfully we have what's called a TNT equivalent which states that for every gram of TNT detonated 4184 joules of energy are released this means that a mark 20 detonation which is designed to fracture surface ships releases 962 million joules mind you this is simply an estimate of how powerful Excalibur's aftershock is fate zeroes account has a different piece of information we can use to get more figures Excalibur's light is so hot that it instantly evaporates the water around it this much is consistent with stain I'd a sartorial mentions her noble phantasm dried up the river for some time after the from the blast in a giant wave and there's a shallow amount underneath our Toria in the aftermath using wide shots of the blast radius we can see most of the affected area with waves pouring out from a circular explosion I think it's safe to assume that this circle has the same circumference as the river's with which Xero told us is 665 meters with that we can get the blast radius azaria from good old PI R squared at 347 thousand three hundred and twenty two square meters sadly this is just the amount of water vapor eyes around shield array at the impact point and doesn't account for the water vaporized by the energy from the blast as it traveled from Excalibur to that point they don't give me any metrics or camera angles from which I can derive the distance between R Toria and the monster that said I feel safe assuming the bulk of the damage happens within the area I calculated we still need one more thing though the depth of the river how wonderful then that the Mian River specifically around the bridge is directly based off the Cobain Great Bridge in Japan in the nearby port of ko Bay lists the waters death at 12 meters so let's say Excalibur evaporated all the water in that space in terms of volume we'd be talking about four million one hundred and sixty eight thousand cubic meters that's more than four billion kilograms of water evaporating that much would take more than nine trillion kilojoules of energy that's nine thousand terajoules to put that into perspective that's around 142 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima concentrated into a glorious thermal light beam of absolute destruction turns out destroying a ship and instantaneously drying a river aren't even on the same order of magnitude ain't no ship stopped in that so let's just be glad our Toria has such strong control over it what can we take from this when going into these DEATH BATTLE kind of scenarios you have to take them with a grain of salt actually more like an entire bag of salt the characters designed for anime and comics are written for entertainment and are drawn with the rule of cool more so than any realistic phenomena this is an exercise in fun not in determining absolute truth just keep that in mind as I summarize my findings in summation are Toria can deploy her noble phantasm in a variety of ways controlling the trajectory and extremity of the light emitted from Excalibur she can use it in short bursts to react within a split second or take her time to charge it to its full ante fortress might when released is a straight beam the light can travel at least 13 miles if not more this beam contains 9,000 terajoules which is enough to vaporize a chunk from an entire River as well as completely erase or targets from existence unlike an actual bomb our Toria is able to contain this destruction - what the light touches or if she goes altar and doesn't even give a crap she can cause massive explosions in the sky this is a testament to just how strong heroic spirits are as some servants like Heracles can take the hit and still have at least some of their body intact to regenerate it's no wonder such a sword can hold its own for a time against a ax which literally tears apart the fabric of worlds at the very least it helps explain why our Toria is such a glutton for delicious food as even her caloric
