[Music] welcome to my backyard so we're in dave's backyard and this is dave's early bronco i bought this thing about a year ago from the guys where we built the pacer at because we were cruising around that yard and i was like oh my gosh that thing is beautiful it hasn't run in 18 years apparently it used to be great ranwin parked but this is a 1966 u13 code bronco this is a factory roadster bronco which is kind of rare so it's probably super valuable and worth a lot of money maybe we're gonna take it rock crawling up a trail probably smash it hardest trail in the area right it's a good idea so this is dave's um spark what do you call this thing it's like a spark tester so we basically are putting it in line from the spark plug wire to the spark plug and the idea is there's a little light in there and when he cranks it if we're getting spark this should light up go ahead dave that's a no no spark we aren't getting any sparks so we're changing ignition parts right now we're putting new points and condenser in okay it's got new points it's got a new coil we're running out of new parts to throw on it cranking crank yep we're getting spark that's like a little tiny miracle i'm gonna just pour a little fuel down the carb okay and we'll see if we actually make it make motor noises is that what you meant yep give her a heck [Music] oh it did things a little fire small one that's fine i'm used to that the engine ran which it hasn't done in 18 years but we found a bunch of problems so today we have to put a new freeze plug in a new water pump a new alternator a new carburetor put the exhaust back together and then we can actually start the fun stuff which is putting lockers in it so we can go four wheeling yay engines dave's buying his way out of these problems rather than replace all five of those i'm gonna replace that one because that's what you do right you just have to leave something for failure this thing's going to be so reliable anyways that's good it looks good well it's it's at least yeah oh that's neat [Laughter] oh that's neat so one of the things with this bronco originally it was a column shift it was three on the tree uh the shifter mechanism is missing and i got a few just random rods when i bought the thing so rather than trying to piece that back together i got a floor shifter for it i bought this thing used it's a james duff shifter so it's made by one of the companies that does a bunch of bronco parts so if all goes well this thing will actually fit in the bronco and we can ship this transmission finally let's get frustrated at this thing no wait man that thing's gonna kick right over give her a heck dave [Music] i'm getting fuel in this fuel filter but i don't know if it's just residual um i'm gonna come to the other side okay crank her up cranking don't get too excited wow it's running it's running like it's purring beautifully ah this is beautiful yeah i love that trail just gonna look behind us i'm kind of thinking maybe we should have made the thing run better before we worried about lockers here's the ledge that we're gonna have a hard time with [Music] okay there's three options right here there's this log climb which is probably too much for the bronco and then over here on the right is the bypass which is too easy for the bronco so we're gonna take it right up the middle come on dave bring it up this i'm gonna try it open first okay so the name of the game whenever dave and i are wheeling is to try and run everything without locking our differentials if we have selectable lockers so he's gonna try and climb up this open diff you gotta keep a little speed good job the bronco doesn't have low enough gears we've already figured that out just getting up to here so it's really hard to climb things gracefully you got to kind of beat on it yeah so but at least the engine's running good and not they're not smoking or burning a bunch of cooling off [Applause] it's got duck dynasty seat cutters i think it's gonna be great though the cj7 had lived a pretty hard life it was currently living on a ranch and it had been through many previous owners in fact one of the previous owners even painted the engine bright green but we looked it over most of the parts were there the frame was a little bit cracked but it would be perfect for our project got a jumper cable the jeep doesn't want to start battery's dead when we do finally jump start it and get it running it won't charge the battery so it won't stay running and we don't know if the brakes are going to stop it we don't know if the steering's going to turn so we hot wired the alternator to finally get it to charge everything looks like yj's ooh half doors we need those too this is a much better specimen luckily somebody already started loosening everything up [Applause] look at that styling these are our new seats we got a new rear axle some replacement seats a spare tire and a few other odds and ends to put our jeep back together then we drug it all back to dennis's shop where we swapped the parts in we pulled the old axle out folded the new one in and by the end of the day we were back on track this definitely set us back on our timeline but it was better than heading out on the road with a broken rear end okay dennis let's go over everything before we start this up we put the new battery cables in all the grounds new battery tie down all the wiring to the alternator new coil ignition stuff anything we didn't use we rolled up and tied up nice and clean on the sides i'm going to turn on our master kill switch okay and check some lights how's it look up front everything looks good up here all right let's start it up all right fire it up [Music] clear another successful story let's go four wheeling here we go [Music] so we had hopped on a plane flew to texas found an old jeep drug into our friend dennis's shop rewired the whole thing with some help from painless put in new headlights new tail lights got everything working got the jeep running great swapped an axle put in some new seats a new bikini top and now we're ready to go painless really stepped up and helped us out a lot to make this happen the guys drug us around to junkyards so we could find the parts we needed dennis lennis's garage where we just made a giant mess for a few days before we got the jeep back together we can't wait to come back to texas and take this jeep on a little adventure [Music] well dennis i think i'm gonna need my raincoat sure looks like it today thanks for your help hey you're welcome glad to have you i had a good time we got a working jeep we have new lights we have a new axle seats i think we're ready to go i bought this 1950 cj 3a out of a junkyard and the idea here is that we try and get the thing running those guys love old flat fenders it's going to be a good time plus even more important rick's got a literal junkyard of old jeeps in his backyard so anything we need for the jeep we can probably find out there and anything we don't want off of the jeep we can probably leave out there and he'll never know the difference first order of business introduce pay way and fryburger to an old jeep what do you guys think of my jeep 3a it's like the previous jeep owner read everything he had to do about the jeep in a magazine and didn't look at all the high performance stuff all this moroso stuff holly double bumper what kinds oh four barrel intake is it an offi it is it's an offi 360 intake that's the one with the split port that thing's terrible so i got this thing home it was covered in rat turds i cleaned it off started pulling spark plugs i went up and down both sides spraying some pb blaster in the cylinders but when i got to the last cylinder on this side it literally poured water out oh wow i'm guessing that one that's fine the radiator's full so i think there's somebody washed it and poured water through the hood somehow into the carb into the intake into that that's not good so overall this is pretty cool it also has a worn overdrive really yeah yeah look at the ship here wow this is awesome it's like the perfect family mobile now i can see why you bought it this is sweet look at the tie after the roll cage no i think it's literal schedule 80 pipe that's plumbing right there and did you see the door handle oh yeah there's a screen door action there amazingly we got the master cylinder probably had it in stock since 1972. yeah but it was new so we have one of those so we can look at the brakes the wiring is kind of junk yeah because the rats have chewed it yeah so the wiring isn't perfect but i'm sure we could make it run if we don't get any parts in the mail in time so we don't have any problems [Music] as i began working on the brakes peyway tore into the old holly and lo and behold it was also full of water ah awesome it used to run on chocolate milk so now i'm gonna try the other side that's that's vanilla yeah this side was chocolate and the other side's vanilla for our second day of jeep recovery peyway messed around with the rat's nest of wiring freiburger did the carburetor rehash and i rolled around on the ground fixing brakes and draining and refilling anything that would hold oil 140. be a little i did it'll be it'll be fine i got one of each [Music] good just a little low okay hi gunther [Music] this carburetor looked like it had been on the titanic so uh we pieced together one off of my old ford f-250 4x4 one off rick's old motorhome and a random rebuild kit and we're going to make it good this is a strange carburetor because it's actually a 390 cfm deal you can tell the the hole in the venturi is a little bigger on this 600 which is the really common 1850 carb versus this one which is a 390. actually a better deal for that little v6 [Music] hey [Music] [Laughter] even though we call every episode of this show dirt every day this project really epitomizes what the ded or dead philosophy is all about i wonder that dog loves this jeep bringing an old jeep back from the dead and getting it ready to hit the dirt once again [Music] i think it is time to go for a drive hopefully we won't end up in the neighbor's front yard all right let it warm up a little bit let's go [Music] one of the things i've always wanted to do on dirt every day is find an old farm truck that's out in the field rescue it and take it on an adventure so about four months ago dave sent me a craigslist ad for this truck sitting behind me it's a 1945 chevy military truck that's been used on this ranch here in montana and i said let's buy it let's just buy it we'll figure out what we're gonna do with it once we get there so today is the first day we've seen this truck dave lives about three hours away from here in washington in a normal vehicle so the plan is really simple this thing hasn't run in 20 years and we're gonna fix it and we're gonna drive it back to dave's house which will probably take us about three days instead of three hours because a we don't know how fast it'll go b we want to go off-roading and see there's something very unusual about this truck so this is basically the chevy version of a dodge power wagon it's like a one and a half ton truck that was used in the 40s and probably world war ii but the cool thing is is that it's no longer driving this way the way they use it on the ranch they now drive it that way they take the differentials out they drop out like a ford nine inch or a toyota truck and they flip them upside down and bolt them back in so they run backwards on the coast side so basically we're going to try and drive this thing with dualies in the front and the steering axle in the rear which is going to be sketchy because driving a forklift at five feels like it's gonna spin around on you so it'll probably take us now nine days to get home the guy that we're buying it from his dad built these and he built about 40 of them from what he explained and farmers would buy them and there would be all types of attachments he would put on the back of it by having the steering in the back and the big drive axle in the front he was able to maneuver it better a little bit tighter so they called him a ranch hand i just thought it was beautiful because i really like orange and green me too let's start on getting it running and see if it's still good make it a steer or something that's so crazy doesn't seem to want to get into a first it looks like there hasn't been fluid in here for a long time it's just full of rust so we're going to take the master cylinder off and like hose it out with some like wd-40 or something like that and see if we can clean it up and if it'll work again you send me links on craigslist all the time of wacky stuff and we don't follow through with it i send you one link well in that rav4 thing and you're like oh yeah we're doing that that's a great idea and that way we get to do dumb things and you get to blame me [Laughter] [Music] a heel and a toe and a heel and a toe and a slide slide slide i kind of wonder if we don't get it out of here let's go drive it take it on that gravel road and see if it what it does i like it okay we're gonna test drive it let's test drive it that's cool that the shifter holds your seat up so the brake line that comes down here this old hose this is all working except the brake fluid is leaking out of the wheel cylinder we're just going to undo this brake line right here and i got some caps so we'll cap that off and then hopefully the wheel cylinder on this side is good enough that we can have brakes at least on one side of the truck which normally you wouldn't do you don't want all your brakes on one side of the vehicle because if you hit the brakes the thing will go sideways it's going to go sideways anyways this thing pretty much drives sideways because all that horsepower torque steer all right so i was only able to get like this flex tube that was too large for the pipe so i'm gonna cut it off here leave a little bit of the old muffler and then hopefully it'll clamp on there this thing was just pumping exhaust into the cab so hopefully i can like aim it that way look at the size of that thing stick oh man we were getting struck by hail oh [Music] the drive is really nice you
