she's still searching over the rainbow she was looking for it everybody [Music] kindness from her memorable performances both on screen and in concert Judy Garland earned the distinction of being called an American icon but the public fascination with Garland's Korea has been fueled in part by the harrowing details of her personal life she was chemically trained as a kid to take a pill to go to sleep and take a pill to wake up and go to work she would get hysterical if she hadn't had that she'd be alive today she was just trying to survive and she had kids that she worried about and and an image that she tried to worry about in the next two hours you will hear how one of the world's most beloved entertainers persevere despite her tangled world of drugs and depression and will also learn how in 1969 time ultimately caught up with 47 year-old Judy Garland she did know she had a problem she didn't know what to do about it and neither did any of us dying seem to be the farthest thing from her mind if anything Judy wanted to live her body was failing you know and she was failing fast I fell to the ground and I hit my fresh tune to the ground the night shift why Judy 5y baby why are you this is the amazing story of a woman who was programmed for a life of success and faith and struggled to find the common ground this is the story of the last days of Judy Garland the true Hollywood story [Music] I'm far away [Music] [Music] throughout her life Judy Garland lived on borrowed time more than 30 years of passed since that fateful night in 1969 when 47 year-old Garland swallowed too many sleeping pills in her London home in the decades that followed her death Judy's life has been among the most celebrated and most misunderstood of any Hollywood entertainer the she was a triumphant figure and she was a tragic figure my complaint is that the tragic side of Judy has been over-emphasised she lived such a tragic life I know that you would have a compiled Lee young and tragic and I was blessed with extraordinary talent and a passionate unquenchable thirst for love and acceptance Judy Garland was destined to perform [Music] Frances at Fordham was born in 1922 in a small northern Minnesota town of Grand Rapids Frances was the youngest of Frank and Ethel gums three daughters neither Frank nor ever wanted a third child they sought help from a family friend medical student Mark Radwin Frank said pregnant and he says we can't afford to have another baby I don't want another chance all I can do to feed the two I have and Mark says looks right are you asking me to arrange an abortion for Ethel and Frank yes I am Mark said don't be a fool he said I will not put her on the kitchen table with a rusty knife which is the way they were being done in those days after Mark rabouin refused to assist with an abortion Ethel drove the family car over bumpy roads to try and induce a miscarriage but the plan didn't work baby gamez her family nicknamed her survived ironically she became the apple of her parents eye Frank and Ethel shared a love of music and ran the town's vaudeville theater baby gum made her stage debut as soon as she could walk Judy talked about her start in show business in audio tapes she recorded in the mid 1960s I was too little when I went into the board of the law I was two years old and I just knew jingle bells and my grandmother threw me on my father's stays she owned the theater in Grand Rapids Minnesota I just signed jingle bells and nobody told me just stop so nobody ever asked me look being on the stage and she's saying that some four or five times before they could get her off she was born for the theater baby gum soon sang and danced alongside her older siblings in a vaudeville act billed as the gum sisters the trio performed nightly at their parents theatre Judy Garland later wrote in her unpublished autobiography that her days in Grand Rapids were the happiest and most peaceful of her life but the Bliss did not last in 1926 the gum family was forced to pack their bags and leave town Frank was obviously bisexual and he became enamored of a young boy and made love to of course and it would became common news in the community and there was nothing to do to save their face except to move to escape the cloud of scandals the gum family drove West all the way to Southern California where friend Mark rabouin had set up his medical practice the young doctor helped Frank and Ethel locate an affordable theater in the high desert community of Lancaster with Hollywood the show business capital of the world only two hours away Ethel set her sights on bigger and better things for her daughters she signed the girls up for dance lessons and singing engagements all over Los Angeles in his biography on Judy Garland titled get happy Arthur Gerald Clark revealed how Ethel relentlessly drove her daughters when Judy was 9 or 10 years old her mother started giving her and her two older sisters who were in the act the gum sisters she started giving them pills I'm feta means in the morning to get them going and then when they got all revved up couldn't go to sleep at night I would come to sleeping pills next morning the amphetamines again and her mother would say to a friend I've got to get those girls going and boy she really did Ethel kept her girls on the go and 19:29 her persistence paid off the gum sisters were invited to perform in a short movie Ethel eventually took the act on the road in 1934 while in Chicago vaudeville star George Jessel advised the group to come up with a snappier name he suggested the garland sisters taken from Gesell's friend New York theater critic Robert Garland [Music] 12 year old baby gum went one step further anxious to shed her childish nickname she began calling herself Judy after a popular song of the same name written by Hoagy Carmichael and Miller was another well-known child performer from that era bland never forgot her introduction to Judy Garland it was a woman's voice and a little girl's body and it was powerful and you know you didn't see many girls around the could say like when she would start to sing everybody talked to attention [Music] the little girl with the adult voice began to overshadow her older sisters Ethel recognized Judy's growing popularity she shocked her youngest daughter to every major movie studio a secretary at MGM was taken aback when she heard Judy sing she arranged for an audition with company president Louie B mayor the most powerful executive in Hollywood in the fall of 1935 Mayer was so moved after he heard Judy's voice that he offered her a contract on the spot she was very thrilled to be signed by MGM and I think those days to be working them 13-year old Judy Garland signed a seven-year contract that paid her a starting salary of $100 a week a fortune during the Depression the contract could not have come at a better time as the family theater in Lancaster was going bankrupt but the celebration didn't last long in November 1935 two months after Judy signed with MGM Frank gum came down with spinal meningitis and died a devastated judy was now in the sole care of her career-driven mother she loved she wanted like to fell apart in it she played the piano with the movie house and that was as far as she got but she saw an opportunity for the girls and she grabbed two I was dismayed Judy's career at MGM got off to a slow start garland performed in short movies while studio executives tried to figure out what to do with her at 13 she was too old to play a child and too young to play a love interest Judy finally found her niche as the perfect girl next door in 1937 when a year after she signed her contract Garland began shooting her first feature film for MGM Broadway melody of 1938 co-starred Robert Taylor buddy Epson and Sophie Tucker Judy teamed up with Sophie Tucker again for her second MGM Feature thoroughbreds don't cry the movie also starred seventeen-year-old Mickey Rooney Maroney and garland developed such good chemistry on and off camera that they went on to make nine more films together and she developed from the girl next door into the girl next to me and I was so proud to be the fella next to her while Judy yeren praised for her singing and acting she was dismayed that MGM valued more glamorous actresses such as Lana Turner and Hedy Lamarr Garland desperately wanted to get noticed but age and beauty weren't the only factors working against her Judy also had trouble keeping weight off her petit four foot eleven frame when you have a fourteen year old person in fourteen such a rough age anyway who's gaining weight they didn't know what to do they tried diets they tried all of this she didn't want to do all of that so they found this little wonder pill called Benzedrine and they knew what cut your appetite gave you a little energy I thought what could what could possibly hurt Studio doctors who prescribed Benzedrine were unaware that Judy was already taking a daily dose of amphetamines and barbiturates and dangerous regimen initiated by her mother years earlier it was a high-strung individual she was like a violin really and then she couldn't sleep worrying about whether or not she's going to do good the next day then the mother would give her a sleeping pill then they'd have to get her up real early and she was groggy and they'd have to give her something to get her going by the age of 15 judy garland's dependency on potent drugs fueled her belief that she did not belong among the many beautiful and talented women at MGM Garland's anxiety was partially alleviated in the spring of 1938 when she was offered the role of Dorothy Gale in a musical adaptation of the much-loved children's book The Wizard of Oz the role gave Garland all the approval she desired and more if happy little bluebirds fly coming up next on the e true Hollywood story Judy finds her pot of gold [Music] and later a cry at the picture show by the mid-1930s Judy Garland was MGM's newest singing sensation so she was talented yearned for more recognition her break came in 1938 when the teenage actress was assigned the lead role in a lavish musical fantasy The Wizard of Oz of course was so important to her mainly because it was her first starring role and that's what the catalyst for her career as a motion picture star was Judy was cast as Dorothy Gale a Kansas farm girl who suddenly finds herself on an unforgettable journey the talented ensemble included ray Bolger Jack Haley and Bert Lahr as Dorothy's colorful comrades the Scarecrow the Tin Man and the lion lions lions and tigers and bears the role that changed the course of Garland's career almost didn't happen produces briefly considered Shirley Temple for the part of Dorothy 20th Century Fox had temple under contract and refused to loan her to MGM Louie V Mayer then turned to Judy the character of Dorothy was several years younger than Garland so producers put Judy in pigtails and fitted her with a corset to hide her breasts one of the movies assistant choreographer is Donna Mason who was aware Judy had pressures other than just memorizing her lines hello and everything and she mentioned that she had to go on a diet she was gaining too much weight that the studio didn't like the fact that she was getting silver lunches I remember that she was Garland controlled her weight with daily doses of the amphetamine Benzedrine prescribed by Studio doctors principal shooting was completed on the Wizard of Oz in March 1939 a majority of the movie was filmed in color and many elaborate sets and special effects were used the completed project cost nearly three million dollars the most money MGM had spent on any one production to that point the budget overruns were forgotten by the summer though when the Wizard of Oz premiered two long lines and glowing reviews a wonderful story and the part the Judy played I think was very very kind and made you realize that there isn't any place like home America's love affair with the film turned 17 year old Judy Garland into a bona fide movie star in the summer of 1939 thousands of screaming fans showed up in New York City when Judy and Mickey Rooney made a joint appearance to promote The Wizard of Oz as well as their latest film together babes in arms and garland also appeared on major radio programs to perform a memorable solo from The Wizard of Oz here's one of your all-time sweethearts another command performance for that lovely sweater girl Judy Garland [Applause] [Music] dreams as you did [Music] executives at MGM responded to Garland's rise in stature by increasing her salary to $2,000 a week beginning in 1939 Judy became MGM's leading musical star she made 10 song and dance movies in three and a half years including such big hits as Ziegfeld girl for me and my gal and girl crazy but the grueling work schedule wasn't easy for the teenager Garland increasingly relied on pills to get her through the long days when you finish a day's shooting you went home at 6 by the time you drove home was another hour to get home by the time you ate your dinner then you had to take your bath then you had to read your script learn your lines our wise it was hard but you can imagine if somebody's on drugs like Judy was that must have been a living hell for her Judy was under intense pressure to work hard and make money she hoped romance would provide an emotional outlet in 1940 eighteen-year-old Garland began dating 30 year old David Rose a handsome and talented music composer Judy's mother Ethel Gumm and MGM Executives disapproved of their relationship they feared the age gap between the couple would ruin Garland's wholesome image but Garland was anxious to get out on her own in July 1941 Judy and David shocked her mother and the studio brass when they flew to Las Vegas and were married by a justice of the peace once they got married they discovered they had very little income and except music Judy was lively she wanted dancing she wanted to go to nightclubs David Rhodes didn't want any of that he wanted to stay home social differences proved to be the least of David and Judy's problems in the fall of 1942 20-year old garland found out she was pregnant David Rose agreed with her mother that she should not have the child and Ethel Gumm the mother came out from talking to David and said you can't have this baby and Judy said why not I have to it's mine I want it the right time Judy you can have all the children you want but not now they both thought it would hurt their career because MGM wanted to keep her as the girl next door a virgin the following day Ethel and David drove Judy to an illegal establishment just outside the Los Angeles City Limits where her pregnancy was terminated a marriage that Judy hoped would provide stability and happiness brought nothing but sadness and grief she responded by having an affair 34 year-old Joseph mankiewicz was an outspoken hotshot producer at MGM and Judy was attracted to his power in intelligence mankiewicz was equally crazy about Garland but he was also concerned about her mounting personal troubles mankiewicz recommended that garland see a psychotherapist discipline I kept saying to help once again Judy went against the wishes of the studio bosses and her mother in 1943 she began daily sessions with a psychotherapist while Garland attempted to get her personal life in order she continued to work at a frantic pace in December 1943 Judy started shooting her 18th feature for MGM meet me in st. Louis [Music] six-year-old Margaret O'Brien was cast as her younger sister Judy would be very mature at some times you know because she was a little bit older in her thinking because she grew up at the studio and had been through so much but she'd be like a kid to she get down on on the ground with me and we played jacks the production on the big-budget musical got off to a shaky start Garlan didn't like the script and she frequently showed up to work late or not at all the film's director remained patient and eventually convinced Judy the part was worthy of her talents this was a very happy time for her on the set of Mimi in st. Louis because she had met Vincente Minnelli who was the director and he was such a kind gentle man he was just a wonderful man although production still ran long and over budget meet me in st. Louis was a resounding success the fragile garland flourished under Minelli's direction and the film set a studio record for box office receipts that was the first movie that I recall going to see where when it was over I was like actively surprised and disappointed I got so into that movie as a kid that I II was really living with those people and I didn't want it to end [Music] on the heels of meet me in st. Louis forty one-year-old Vincente Minnelli was immediately assigned to oversee garlands next project Ziegfeld Follies bye now the 22 year old actress was so smitten with the Italian director that she asked David Rose for a divorce garland a Minnelli's magic on the set resulted in a love affair that surprised their closest friends would say the same thing he was very nice don't misunderstand but he didn't look like the type that would have a girlfriend and marry somebody people told Judy that Vincent might be gay or bisexual because he was very effeminate when he first arrived at MGM II was born makeup he went on to one set just to observe and he wore make it more makeup than most of the actresses Garland's need for attention and affection far outweighed reality in January 1945 the couple announced their engagement and six months later they married in the backyard of Judy's mother's house Nellie is one of the most charming men you could possibly meet and greatly talented they both had a lot in common they were both in show business they could talk about scripts when they couldn't home at night they could talk about their friends unlike her previous marriage garland had the blessing of her mother Ethel and the bosses at MGM the feeling was the older and mature Vincente Minnelli could keep an eye on the young troubled star on her honeymoon in July 1945 garland threw away her pills and said she planned to start seeing a therapist two months later the newlyweds announced they were expecting a baby Judy Garland believes she found the happiness she so desperately wanted but her newfound confidence and tranquility were not to last she had everything going for her she had the tower everything and everything went down the drain and I would have to say it's all because of the stupid fields coming up an addiction out of control he knew that this girl was going to kill herself with drugs and later Judy's star is reborn [Music] are you boring unpopular got nothing to talk witnessed the testimony decide for yourself only Ani at the age of 23 Judy Garland could hardly be called an ingenue she was an embittered showbusiness veteran saddled with a domineering mother and a growing addiction to prescription drugs then 42 year old director Vincente Minnelli came into her life there was marriage a pregnancy and a renewed passion for acting on a movie set Minnelli and garland were a magical combination even though Duty put on weight with her pregnancy critics applauded her appearance and performance until the clouds roll by [Music] one reviewer wrote she is radiantly beautiful winsome ly appealing and for 20 minutes the picture is all hers [Music] positive reviews were icing on the cake for Garland in March 1946 Judy and Vincent became proud parents and they did have a baby which was no sort of a minor miracle and they had a wonderful baby Liza was absolutely a dream as 24 year old Judy got acquainted with motherhood am GM executives plotted to get their biggest moneymaker back to work garland was enticed with a new contract that more than doubled his salary to six thousand dollars a week in December 1946 after a year's absence Judy returned to the studio to star in the Pirates along with Gene Kelly Vincente Minnelli was once again directing his wife but on this occasion shooting was anything but smooth in an effort to regain her figure judy was back on amphetamines she missed 99 of the 135 shooting days and when she did show up she often wandered around in a daze one of the side effects of amphetamines is paranoia and when she was on the side of the pirate they were they had bonfires that were doing dances around bonfires and she started screaming they're trying to kill me they want to burn me alive as if she were Joan of Arc being led to the stake she hadn't but Judy had to be led away from the set she was surrounded by a very intricate spiderweb of people that were yes people people that were supposed to be her friends but I think underneath it all were they her friends because they gave her the what she wanted which destroyed her she would be loving and affectionate then when I came home I could tell always tell when she's taken the pills you know the pirate was the only movie Judy made at MGM that failed to turn a profit Garland blame Minnelli for the film's woes just a year earlier Judy seemed to have the harmony she longed for with a new husband a baby girl and a lucrative contract by 1947 the 25-year old actress was on the verge of a nervous breakdown Garland's family dr. Mark Robin took drastic measures mark senator sanitarium at one point he knew that this girl was going to kill herself with drugs in the summer of 1947 her despondent garland endured short stays at psychiatric hospitals in Los Angeles and Boston doctors at both clinics prescribed an extended leave so Judy could be properly treated for her addictions and depression MGM Executives bought instead Louie be mayor ordered Judy back to work garland agreed to return but only as long as her husband did not direct her next project the studio granted Judy's wish and in November 1947 she was cast alongside Fred Astaire and Ann Miller in Easter Parade with her reputation clearly on the line Judy pulled herself together and production ran smoothly Easter Parade was a runaway hit and MGM's top grossing film of 1948 garland proved her immeasurable value yet again and in the summer of 1948 she was reunited with Fred Astaire in the Barkley's of Broadway but the good behavior and reliability Judy displayed during Easter Parade were non-existent on the Barkley's of Broadway she continually showed up for work tense and exhausted turned out on the studio made up ready to go at nine o'clock it's a big deal costing a lot of money for every minute you're late it's very expensive you know at all the percent to finish the movie on-time and on-budget studio executives took an extreme measure they replaced Judy with Ginger Rogers Fred Astaire's most famous dancing partner not only was Garland bumped she also was suspended from work and dropped from the payroll she was a rooster studio and she was a nuisance to herself and my husband Mark Reverend noticed the change in her temperament she was almost hysterical so much of the time and he kept he kept saying to me this girl's gonna die of nervous prostration Garland's fragile state was further damaged by her crumbling marriage to Vincente Minnelli aside from the professional riff that developed while making the pirate Judy also felt personally betrayed by her husband she came home unexpectedly from the studio one afternoon I went into her bedroom their bedroom and there and her bed was Benson was a man who worked for them the homosexual aspect of this man was so strong but he could not have been happy with a wife most spouses discovering the partner and such a compromising position would have taken a gun to him or a knife or hit him over the head or something Trudy did just the opposite she ran down the hall and into a bathroom broke a glass Garlan survived the half-hearted suicide attempt and her embarrassing suspension was actually a blessing it gave Judi time for a much-needed rest in March 1949 eight months after being taken off the studio payroll 27 year-old judy took on one of the most challenging roles of her career the gun slinging Annie Oakley Annie Get Your Gun had been a huge hit on Broadway and MGM executives were betting that Garland would assure the same outcome for the movie version very quickly the studio bosses found out their assumptions were wrong you'd never know she was gonna show up we get on the set at 9 10 o'clock no Judy may be creeps in two hours later I mean fire but nobody knew why when I think now I think I know why she probably was out late or maybe on diet pills Judy's relentless use of amphetamines was often encouraged by studio doctors to help keep her weight down but the pills made her moody and unreliable there was dr. feelgood on the lot who would kind of come in and and give her things when she needed them while making Annie Get Your Gun Garland experienced another unfortunate side-effect of amphetamines some of her hair fell out during one costume fitting session judy barely resembled her former self the pills had a cumulative effect and she had to take more and more and more and eventually the number of pills she took that she could take safely would have killed a lot of other people to say the movie produces made drastic changes and they started at the top in May 1949 judy was replaced with betty hutton a popular actress on loan from paramount for the second time the studio also suspended Garland she didn't have anybody that she could really cling to I think she was the person that had to be guided and there was nobody there to guide her Garland second suspension finally convinced Louie B Mayer that his prized actress needed professional help in the summer of 1949 Mayer authorized three months of therapy for Judy at a Boston hospital at the company's expense if you're on dope or anything like that but there's nothing to go down to the Betty Ford Center and get rehab there was no Betty Ford Center for these people in those days there was no way around when Judy returned to Los Angeles in September 1949 she was sober and a healthy 20 pounds heavier nervous executives immediately told Garland to slim down before long Judy was back on her destructive regimen of pills three months of therapy down the drain in June 1950 Jane Powell replaced an incoherent Garland on the film Royal Wedding Judy's days at MGM seemed to be numbered [Music] coming up from the silver screen to the Broadway stage [Music] and later a golden voice is almost silenced if she survives we got more than five years to live but that it was certain she would never sing again he presents this week's box office preview of the wedding date of overwork and a severe dependency on pills left the 28-year old actress without any emotional stability she was literally like almost paralyzed she just couldn't get on stage on time she couldn't remember her lines and she would have all these fights with people around her and I think I think she was in a living hell Judy's living hell became reality on the night of June 19th 1950 I was after she was suspended by MGM for the second time in a year her distraught Garland locked herself in the bathroom of her Hollywood Hills home smashed a drinking glass and cut his throat judy has always been an emotional girl and I think a lot of it probably was feeling sorry for herself just feeling sorry for herself and not being able to do anything about it she was like somebody drowning Vincente Minnelli discovered his wife on the floor with blood streaming down her neck Minnelli rushed Judy to the hospital he was relieved to find out the cut wasn't deep and required only a band-aid newspapers of course a Judy Garland / it sounded like Jack the Ripper time it was it was really a cry for help that was she was a self abuser in that sense she wanted attention desperate for attention that was how she felt she could get it as the scathing press reports reverberating through the hallways of MGM Judy's family physician Mark Radwin took matters into his own hands so mark went to see lb mayor for whom Mark had done many favors incidentally it said mr. mayor I just want you to know I think Judy's gonna die if you keep her here on the contract she is in such a rebellion she is so nervous he is such a wreck Mayer had enough on September 29th 1950 MGM released a statement announcing with reluctance and regret Judy Garland was released from our contract it could have had more patience with her because she had made such a terribly a large amount of money for them and when she was a star she was she always came through for them in 15 years at MGM garland made 30 movies and generated 100 million dollars in box office receipts Judy's addictions and unpredictable behavior made our unemployable at any studio but at 28 she wasn't yet ready to retire so instead Garland turned to radio just stay tuned then folks this program will be followed by entertainment clever girl do you folks you know she started out in radio with me we had a lot of fun working for Pepsodent Pepsodent you told me we didn't have a sponsor Garland's engaging personality made her a hit on the radio circuit Judi spirits were further lifted in the winter of 1950 when she was reacquainted with a former admirer 33 year old Sid left first met Garland on the MGM lot in 1937 when he worked as an assistant to actress Eleanor Powell in Hollywood circles the broad shouldered former test pilot was better known as one punch left he was in some very public fights before I met Judy Cyrano's the Mocambo places like that one fight that zeroes a thousand people stood on tables to watch to watch him fight another man and said usually one Sid was a real you know kind of a real tough guy and kind of told Judy to you know get it over here move it over there and she loved that Judy wanted a man to stand up for and Sid promised to do that he promised to punch out anybody who didn't do just right by Judy Sid Luft had had Judy write like this and he had her heart and soul he had her trust and her love and respect and he knew what she needed - Judy loft offered more than good looks and protection he offered her another chatter happiness Garland had been separated from Vincente Minnelli for nearly a year in March 1951 the two divorced after five mostly difficult years of marriage he was not the right man for her under any circumstances and it's not a surprise that she did leave him and I'm sure he was relieved Sid laughed and Judy Garland moved in together following her divorce loved also wanted to manage her career Sid encouraged duty to concentrate on her singing in April 1951 Garland accepted an invitation to perform at the famed Palladium Theatre in London to her surprise judy received a warm welcome and was paid eighty thousand dollars for four weeks she has a forcefield in her body an electrical force field that when she turns this on it would reach to the back of the theater reception overseas convinced it loved that his new girlfriend would be an even bigger head in the United States in October 1951 love persuaded the owners of the abandoned Palace Theatre in New York City to reopen their doors for Judy Garland he was a wonderful agent for her he's one to bet the palace that being closed for years opened up and everybody came the place was sold up on the evening of October 16 1951 thousands of fans lined the sidewalk outside the palace including an aspiring young composer named Jerry Herman Herman later wrote the Broadway musicals Hello Dolly and Maine she sang a wonderful song that ended with and vaudeville's back at the palace and I'm on the bill and it was it was it was a very emotional and exciting first experience for this young man who had loved her as a movie star realized that there was much more there [Music] actor John Carlyle who later forged a close friendship with Garland was moved to tears by the performance when she sat down on the apron to sing somewhere with the rainbow there's never been anything like it ever I mean no no record can really do it justice because she meant the words to that song she really did [Music] Wow [Music] Judy's debut was an overwhelming success and her engagement was immediately extended she filled the 1900 seat theatre for a staggering 13 performances a week the audience was blown away because they had not ever seen that magic fully captured even in some of the great films she did it wasn't fully realized unless she was standing in front of the performance scheduled soon got up with Garland four weeks into the run she collapsed backstage with heart palpitations doctors advised Judy to take at least a month off to rest garland said she didn't want to let down her fans and was back on stage five days later sit in the chair and pay money to see I think that's a great tribute so I kind of [Music] maybe a marriage between the audience and myself February 1952 nineteen weeks after she started her historic run garland finally decided to move on in April Judy continued her rise to the top of the singing world with a triumphant return to Los Angeles opening night at the city's Philharmonic theater who is a star-studded affair that included none other than Louie be mayor Judy's former boss at MGM [Music] [Music] repeating the success of London and New York Judy was a hit in Los Angeles she credited Sid love for the amazing turnaround in her career when 30 year-old Garland was startled to find out she was pregnant in the spring of 1952 she didn't hesitate on June 8th she and love tied the knot Judy's third marriage in 11 years that November garland became a mother for the second time with the arrival of daughter Lorna when she married Sid loved he contributed to her stability he cared very much for her and I think that he was the best of all of her husband's for her what Judy needed most was confidence and that said gave maturity at the beginning in spades becoming a husband and a father didn't slow Sid from aggressively pursuing work for his new wife by the end of 1952 left had not only orchestrated a flourishing music career Judy he also secured her improbable return to the silver screen Garland's chaotic and dramatic life seemed to be back in order but the peaceful times were not to last [Music] coming up debt depression and distress she one Septim a piece of meat that sings so she was very insecure to say believe and later time year's SAG Awards this red carpet moment brought to you by Maybelline maybe she's born with it maybe it's Maybelline for all so many years I've been a minstrel girl singing for myself by 1952 successful concerts in London New York and Los Angeles jump-started Judy Garland stalled career and opened the door for a return to the big screen Garland prepared to play the lead role in a remake of the 1937 classic a star is born then she receives startling news her mother Ethel suffered a heart attack she died at the parking lot how that could happen look - Ethel she managed everything so well how could she not have managed a little better when she passed away in January 1953 58 year-old Ethel Gumm was working for $1 an hours of clerk at an aircraft company in Santa Monica Ethel was the driving force behind her youngest daughter's career but as Judy grew up she came to resent her mother by the early 1950s the two rarely saw or spoke to each other despite the strain in their relationship judy was deeply saddened by Ethel's death to deal with a depression garland relied on large amounts of prescription drugs Perry Ruben was Judy's assistant one of his duties was keeping her pills in ample supply the truck store on sunset Larrabee dr. Polk is her doctor would put a prescription and every day I would pick him up when garland run out of pills she went to extreme measures to get her fix family friend Marcella rabwah noticed one of her prescription bottles was emptied during a dinner party at her home she suspected Judy was the culprit I looked in the person opened her corn purse and I spilled all of my second dollar pills from my medicine cabinet she'd gone in taking all the pills well she was pretty she grinned by this she said to me do you hate me Marcella was a Judy I could never hate you I can feel sorry for you but I will always love you as Judy struggled with her mother's passing and a drug problem production on a star is born forward British actor James Mason was cast in the lead role opposite garland shooting on the big-budget musical began in October 1953 Judy's conduct was reminiscent of her final years at MGM she was occasionally late or absent from the set filming dragged on for 10 exhausting months at a final cost of five million dollars a star is born as the second most expensive picture of its time the problems behind the scenes did not dampen the public's interest in September 1954 thousands of moviegoers lined up outside the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles for the film's premiere Elizabeth Taylor Liberace and Lucille Ball were among the celebrities who attended the gala affair is born Judy Garland [Music] [Music] critics were equally impressed with a star is born many top reviewers called the picture the best of the year and predicted garland was a surefire bet for an Oscar the star is born I to this day cannot believe it with all of every fiber in my body the greatest performance I've ever seen on the screen the tremendous buzz surrounding a star is born' was quickly hushed when theater owners complained the three-hour running time was too long in the fall of 1954 just after the movie was released nationwide Warner Brothers executives bowed to the pressure and trimmed 27 minutes cuts left the film with noticeable holes in the story the press lambaste of the studio's decision and audiences ultimately stayed away for duty the final blow was delivered in March 1955 during the Academy Awards [Music] watch the ceremony from her hospital she had given birth to her son Joey the day before cameras were brought into the hospital to capture Judy's reaction following her expected victory but they were quickly turned off when Grace Kelly was named the winner for country girl she wanted that Oscar because not only because I think that the Oscar itself meant something to work but also because it would have meant the town really liked her fans may have adored Judy but Hollywood insiders were far less enamored Warner Brothers executives were so incensed with Garland's behavior in the Star born they canceled her three-picture Dean to further complicate matters Sid left was unable to manage his wife's money by the summer of 1955 the couple was broke and owed thousands of dollars in back taxes on their expensive Los Angeles home she complained that Sid was always at the racetrack and that money was disappearing she was desperate for money I suppose it'd blow between the track and buying clothes and charging it to the stars born and all that for a thousand maybe thirty three-year-old Garland was forced to go back to work to keep her growing family afloat financially no movie roles were offered so Doody turned her attention to the expanding medium of television in September 1955 she was paid a whopping $100,000 to host a 90-minute variety special on CBS this is the first board start you believe show of the season and we're presenting Miss Judy Garland and their first television appearance [Music] the very mention of your name [Music] Garland's appearance on the fold star Jubilee series was a boon to CES forty million viewers tuned in making the show among the highest-rated network history the bells are [Music] she didn't know her power over people and therefore they are insecure it was astonishing this genius who had everybody in the palm of her hand but she never thought so she didn't think very much about herself she was this great style great town she won Septim a piece of meat that sings in 1956 Alan King was a rising comedian when he opened for Judy Garland during a return engagement at New York's Palace Theater King toured with Garland for the next four years like everyone who was close to Judy King had to adapt to her unpredictable behavior I used to put a Do Not Disturb on my phone and at 2:00 o'clock in the morning the phone would ring obviously the operator said who's calling mr. King has been issued mr. Judy Garland and of course her voice was so you know identifiable and the operator said mr. guy said I know Julie yeah he says come on over many nights I get dressed in the middle of the night garland often took one or more amphetamines right before a performance when the show was over she was so high she couldn't sleep typically Judy didn't go to bed until 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning and only after taking several sleeping pills amazingly Judy trudged through one sold-out concert after another in 1956 she brought in more than a quarter million dollars during the record five-week run at the new frontier Hotel in Las Vegas although she earned hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in the mid and late 1950s Garland remained in debt the growing list of bill collectors included the IRS she expected Sid left to take care of her money later on she expected her agents to take care of her money she didn't know anything about it and she didn't want to know she wanted to perform she wanted them to do everything else Judy's ongoing financial woes put a strain on her marriage to Sid Luft they stopped fighting and never when he leave and he'd come back and he were in Iraq for another three days everything was hunky-dory hunky-dory another week won by by 1959 Judas troubled marriage was just one in a growing list of problems Garland's hectic performance schedule kept her away from her three children for months at a time she was hundreds of thousands of dollars in death and her once slender figure inflated to 180 pounds in November 1959 Doody checked into a New York Hospital to find out why she was gaining weight so rapidly Garland was startled by the diagnosis nearly killed oh she wasn't that she was just fat she was bloated coming up Judy triumph the comeback at Carnegie home could you walk that me crazy [Music] and later but tragic overdose he called me and he said John Judy's dead I said I don't believe that [Music] the actors shine on their special night they've dressed Garland's marriage to Sid loved was on the rocks she was heavily in debt and her health was failing by that November when Judy checked into a New York Hospital she weighed 180 pounds her legs were so stiff and swollen that she could barely walk Garland was diagnosed with acute hepatitis and told her failing liver triggered the weight gain Judy was warned that she might not survive I found out what hospital she was in in New York I said this is Mick I said I want you to take my hand if we can make it together you and I it's like over the rainbow you and I can make it did you hear me Jutes the doctors slowly drain some of that fluid from her body and told her that she had no more than if she if she survived that she would have no more than five years to live but that it was certain she would never sing again miraculously garland rallied by January 1960 her liver partially regenerated after seven weeks in a hospital bed judy was released the new year death experience frightened Garland but she had no choice but to go back to work she and her family were broke [Music] shortly after she left the hospital judy was approached by a persuasive entertainment agent who promised to revive her career and erase her debt in 1960 37 year-old Freddie fields along with his partner David Begelman formed their own agency Fields was desperate to sign big-name clients and garland was at the top of his list I know she had a big audience Faton and had no management and nothing to push her into something different something original feels convinced duty to sign with him in December 1960 garland broke professional ranks with Sid love to managed his wife's career for nine years sid and judy was still married but their volatile relationship made working together impossible she'd be burning his shirts in the fireplace I mean I actually saw that all his new shirts you know the change in management quickly paid off in March 1961 garland was cast in a supporting role in the star-studded drama judgment at nine the switch for musicals to drama was a bold move for Judy but she was grateful for her first acting job in seven years who actually played a character pod no matter how small if it's good I think it's it's interesting for an audience and it sort of keeps keep their own work interesting Garland solid performance in judgment at Nuremburg earned her critical praise as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress even though she failed to win the Oscar for the second time her career was back on track in April 1961 garland further cemented her place in entertainment history when she performed at new york city's legendary Carnegie Hall Mort Lindsey conducted the orchestra on that monumental evening she always was standing in the wings and as we finished the overture she would start you know doing this and I could see she's just getting up and up and up and by the time she walked out and she was ready Judy looked at they stood through the entire overture he looked at my plays flame hurt you couldn't have done it better if you were shooting a movie about [Music] your baby with a Dixie melody when you cool too from the heart there's a sound to that voice that nobody else has and it brings out all the emotion in an audience and you only had to be at Carnegie Hall to know what I'm talking about you look down in the audience and there's a you know every big star you could think of Henry Fonda Rock Hudson Ethel Merman they're all standing on their chairs applauding Benny Goodman you know it was unbelievable we know the sold-out concert was recorded and turned into a double album sense Judy at Carnegie Hall spent 13 weeks at number one and collected five Grammy Awards including album of the year less than two years after doctors told her that she would never perform again Garland was at the pinnacle of her career [Music] [Music] [Applause] the performances saved her there was something inside of her that was magic I was born to do that to work and try to entertain take people's minds off their troubles for a while if I can every time we were doing concerts somebody's screaming we love you Judy we love you Judy all all you know from every corner of a concert hall Garland's good fortune didn't stop at Carnegie Hall in 1962 she started a pair of movies a child is waiting with Burt Lancaster and I could go on singing with Dirk Bogarde and Jack Klugman and I could go on singing Judy portrayed a legendary singer who confronts her past when she returns to London for a concert Ronald neem directed the film it was that was part of her life that in some cases it was too painful for her she just honestly couldn't face it and yet there was a part of her that was pleased that it was true to her in her life a crowded theatre eagerly awaits one of the world's great dramatic scars on her best behavior during production of her two previous movies on the set of I could go on singing however Judy's demeanor radically changed Garland was temperamental complained incessantly about the script and frequently showed up late for her scenes there were times when she was terrified of coming to the studio and so if she would phone in she'd say I can't be there today and as the film went on and as the strain of production goes on because she was in practically every shot in the film so the difficulties became stronger I think whenever I want do you understand that don't stand there just hang on no matter how prosperous a professional life scene duty could not and would not give up her pills during filming if I could go on singing garland took such potent drugs as Demerol ritalin in second Judy couldn't relax and couldn't go to bed early and couldn't go to sleep early she would tire everybody out Judy pulled herself together long enough to finish her scenes but I could go on singing was a disappointment at the box office with Garland's film career again stalled her agents looked to the small screen in 1962 variety shows with a rage on television and CBS executives but a series hosted by Judy Garland would bring in huge ratings that December the network committed an astonishing twenty four million dollars for four years of the Judy Garland show George solder was hired to create and produce the series she was a legend she was bigger than television and so we decided to put together a series of shows with each show being an event so we made each show into a special and and had its own look and its own signature look beginning in the end when judy would walked out with a big spotlight behind them at the end of the show is when she would stand at the trunk and just talk after months of rehearsals the Judy Garland show premiered amid much fanfare in September 1963 over the coming weeks Judy welcomed entertainers such as Barbra Streisand Lena Horne and Tony Bennett Garland even invited her children Liza Lauren and Joey to appear on the Christmas episode I'd like you to meet my daughter Lorna to meet you this is my son Joe against all predictions the usually unreliable darlin managed to keep up with a long work weeks and punishing schedule but when the ratings began to slip CBS brass lost interest in the expensive variety show in the spring of 1964 before the end of the first season the network announced the series would not be renewed judy was crushed didn't have to push you either work she begged for it she needed it she needed it emotionally she needed it professionally she needed it financially under her agents Freddie feels and David Begelman Judy worked non-stop for almost four years surprisingly when our series was canceled garland had no money in the bank has her bills and troubles mounted garland sank into a deep depression in the spring of 1965 the 42 year old entertainer checked into a Los Angeles hospital on the verge of yet another nervous breakdown could Judy Garland the queen of comebacks rally one more time [Music] coming up Judy lick her drug addiction and depression but as she had done in the past Garland checked out before she was properly treated I would have liked her to have been able to find some peace and happiness and medical care for the problem of addiction when Judy left the hospital in June 1965 she was a half-million dollars in debt that same year garland severed ties with her agents Freddie fields and David Begelman and ended her up-and-down 13-year marriage to Sid left Judy was on her own with three children to support she worked all her life and worked so hard and here she didn't really have any money because she didn't know how to do that you know and the people that she had around her weren't doing it for her properly physically and emotionally unable to handle the rigors of a concert tour Judy settled for guest spots on television during the 1965 season she performed on The Ed Sullivan Show the Sammy Davis jr. show and The Andy Williams Show [Music] baby I go along I was very god commanded as much as fifty thousand dollars for a television appearance but Judy was uneasy without a man to handle her business affairs her anxiety didn't last long mark Herron was several years younger than Judy he was good-looking he had a lot of charm intelligent good sense of humor all of which Judy appreciated and he was also ready to do her bidding mark Herron was a tall handsome aspiring actor from Tennessee Herron met Judy at a New Year's Eve party just prior to her divorce from Sid loved in his past 33 year old Herron was involved in romantic relationships with men nevertheless Mark and Judy began dating soon after their introduction in November 1965 following a brief courtship they were married in a small chapel on the Las Vegas Strip in the beginning mark made Judy laugh and that one that went a long way with with judy if you could make a laugh mark may have been able to make judy laugh but he had no control over her frequent fits of anger garland resented the negative aspects of her life including insurmountable debt and a drop in stature in Hollywood between 1964 and 1967 judy vented those frustrations in a series of tape recordings she intended to use to write her autobiography many of the recordings were dictated in the middle of the night when Garland was delirious from pills and mad enough and yet still very self-conscious but I'm gonna write a book and I'm gonna talk because I can do something besides sing you know I don't always have to send this on there is something besides the man that got away over the rainbow or the trolley song there's a woman there are three children there's me there's a lot of life going here and I tried my damnedest to believe in the rainbow that I tried to get over and I couldn't so [Music] Judy's anger was not limited to the tape recorder Garland's abuse of prescription drugs which often meant taking a couple dozen pills a day made her prone to unpredictable behavior husband Mark Heron was not immune from Judy's wrath Judy could have eaten him up and spit him out and I think he began to realize it she didn't want to I think like all of us she loved him in the beginning Heron was ill-equipped to deal with Garland's emotional state they separated in April 1966 after just six months of marriage their divorce was finalized a year later when she got divorced from things super-bright remember in she said well that's over now what you know and that was kind of her attitude Judy's temper diminished her job opportunities in April 1966 garland tore up a dressing room in a drug filled rage moments after hosting the popular ABC variety series The Hollywood Palace the following spring judy was fired from the feature film valley of the dolls when she repeatedly refused to do her scenes because she didn't like the script in early 1968 garland even lost her golden touch with audiences while performing several concerts on the east coast she would show up sometimes not show up sometimes be late sometimes not be good when she went on but she's oh she kind of did it for to herself you know if some of the audience walked out on her in the spring of 1968 Judy's downward spiral continued her Los Angeles home had been sold to pay back taxes Garland's oldest daughter Liza Minnelli was a rising singer dancer and actress living on her own in New York Lorna and Joey went to live with their father Sid left with no money coming in 46 year old judy was forced to live out of a suitcase at times she didn't even have dollar in her purse she was a homeless person she was if it hadn't been for the kindness of friends and strangers she would have been on the street much of the time she really had no place to go she was like the flying dutchman she was kind of homeless circling the globe looking for a foothold and I was happy to give her one John Mayer was an aspiring songwriter who played the piano at small clubs in New York a mutual friend introduced Meyer to garland in October 1968 and he immediately offered to put her up at his parents Park Avenue apartment like so many men before him John believed he could rescue Judy that was a very attractive idea to me that I could take this lady who was at that point had been discarded and then I could bring her back to her her rightful place of glory that was a very seductive idea acting as her manager Meyer booked Judy on several talk shows including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson Meyer was thrilled by the response garland received but he had trouble keeping up with her I just collapsed and when you weren't with Judy she went right on to the next guy and that's how she got to Mickey Dean's by late December 1968 New York discotheque manager Mickey Dean's replaced Myers duties caregiver and companion 34 year old Dean's met Garland a year earlier when she was working in New York and the two formed a casual friendship at the end of 1968 and Judy said while she was going to England to sing at talk of the town a cabaret very fashionable supper club in London and Mickey said well I'm going to miss you why don't we get married on March 15th 1969 46 year old Garland became a bride for the fifth time the lavish wedding ceremony was attended by hundreds of members of the British press Matthew west was Garland's publicist in London and organized the wedding ceremony and reception they sang and did the piano we were all there and it was it was quite good it was it was amazing that Jane and she was very pleased to be getting married she felt safer I think with a husband she'd refer to Mickey that's her husband she liked that four days after their wedding the newlyweds embarked on a week-long concert tour of Scandinavia set up by deans in Stockholm Sweden received a ten minute standing ovation she was given a similar reception during the tourists final show and Copenhagen Denmark upon their return to London in early April duty and Mickey settled into a small cottage they rented in the trendy Chelsea section garland was tired and slowing down though over the next two months she spent several quiet weekends at Matthew West Country home she wasn't pretty worn out but but she was strong and she wanted that she always had plans you know she was always planning the next concept her next thing was to go to Paris to go to the Olympia I remember sitting with her once and she was designing what should wear and never made it to Paris on the evening of June 21st 1969 11 days after her 47th birthday Judy and Mickey plan to meet West to see a show at a London theatre they didn't show up and so I called called the house and Judy was there and Mickey had gone to bed it was about 9 o'clock you know it was at the intermission at the show Mickey had the flu she was watching a royal family biography or something was on I remember because she told me and and she said that you know Mickey's gone to bed and I said you're right Judy and I'm sorry you're not here because um you're missing a great show and she said I know and we'll and I said we'll see you in the morning I'll call you tomorrow cause we were going to the ditch the next day was Sunday later that same night friend John Carlyle called from his Los Angeles home Mickey I woke him up and he he said for Hieronymous she's in the bathroom and then he came back to the phone and he said John I'm gonna have to call you back Judy frequently she loved privacy in the bathroom she had locked the door so Mickey had had to climb out on the roof because he got no answer tapping the door Judy there was no answer thank Judy oh my god I just felt so that was wrong coming up the end of the rainbow I wasn't really shocked because I knew that she had this drug problem and I knew that it had to come to an end I turned on the radio and I heard you singing and then answered my voice was stilled [Music] he's what and only red-carpet coverage continues with the Screen Actors Guild Awards Saturday at 5:00 Eastern and Pacific this is hours of Sunday June 22nd 1969 Judy Garland locked herself in the bathroom of her London home when husband Mickie Dean's knocked on the door later that morning Judy didn't respond when I grab Julie as I move Julia and she normally I don't think I realized she was cold the phone rang it was Mickey and he rang about 7:30 in the morning to say to come down and come over and West called for help and then rushed to Mickey and Judy's house she was upstairs and they brought her down and took her away in an ambulance and that was that but she was dead paramedics pronounced garland dead at the scene she was 47 an autopsy revealed Judy had taken the equivalent of 10 sleeping pills and died from barbiturate poisoning the coroner ruled her death an accidental overdose Dean's broke the news to John Carla one of Judy's closest friends he called me and he said judge what he's dead and I said I don't believe that act like you're kidding and he said John she's dead you've got to call the children you're kidding if you say that one more time John I'll kill you and I don't blame them it just it just was so inconceivable to me I was in my house at Fire Island and I walked out on my deck and I saw all the flags that people had on their houses at half-mast all over Fire Island pine and something told me that somebody who was very dear to the gay community had obviously passed away and I didn't know about it and my phone rang at that moment and a friend of mine said did you hear and I couldn't speak I turned on the radio and I heard you singing my voice was still let's look that's what I believed if she didn't have any plan to die she was quite prepared to go on if she could but her body was failing you know and she was failing fast we were all numb and very shocked and poor little judicium she really didn't mean to I was shocked that there was a beautiful light that's been turned out but I guess I wasn't really shocked because I knew that she had this drug problem and I knew that it had to come to an end so maybe God get you know did her a favor on June 25th three days after her death Garland's body was flown to New York City more than 20,000 fans showed up at the Frankie Campbell funeral home to pay their final respects to a woman who entertained them for five decades six strapping six footmen came walking in the door and they walked down the aisle towards a coffin they turned they picked up the coffin and held it over their heads skyhigh was just very difficult but they did it and slowly walk of the Campbells you know Paula and everyone was singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic mine eyes have seen the glory impressive much more than and everybody there and there's no one who will ever forget that people in the years since her death Judy Garland has become a Hollywood legend remembered as much for her vast body of work to see the whole picture before you can really understand Judy you have to know what happened to her as a child [Music] the beginnings before you understand the ending the ending without the beginning makes no sense whatsoever the very life that a lot of people would give their life for but she was also very tortured and had a lot of pain in my life so how do you love the tragic image of Judy Garland and it's part of her appeal that she's never gonna get credit for being as funny and as witty as she was [Music] he saw life the dark side of it but I think she saw the great humor of it most of them [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
