well here's the bad news 70% of Americans say they hate their jobs or feel disengaged many just clock in and clock out and call it a day at least that's how Jon Acuff felt until he called a do-over I worked at big companies and small companies I started my own and ran it into the ground I found my dream job and left it along the way I learned one big lesson about work it's on us good job dream job bad job no job this remains true though it's easier to blame others or the economy or applause who doesn't get us the reality is that a better job begins with building a better you what if you could change the way you looked at your job what if you could rescue Monday what if you could get unstuck what if you could call do-over all right well Jon Acuff joins us now his new book is called as you just heard do-over it's available nationwide Jon welcome to the program thanks for having me why did you meet you so you left your dream job you were working with Dave Ramsey everybody knows Dave Ramsey why in the world would you leave your dream job I know it I derived I had nice pants and sport coats and whatnot belts like yeah I was wearing belts constantly yeah it was a great job but when it's time to go it's time to go three years there was a season change and when God calls you somewhere even if it might not make sense to people on the outside you have to leap okay but within 24 hours I mean your phone was ringing off the hook your email was burning up and what happened within 24 hours this network of friends and connections and opportunities came around but it did not happen in 24 hours it was a process now what was really fun to see okay so you tribute this to something called a career savings account CSA what exactly is that well career savings account is built off of four different investments it's relationships plus skills plus character times hustle you see most of us we spent eighteen years getting ready for college we graduate and the next thing we get ready for is death and retirement there's this 40-year gap where we buy the lie that a job is just a job we eat at TGI Fridays not TGI Mondays for a reason what if we could actually invest in the things that matter well how how do we reinvent Monday everybody's like oh it's Monday I mean how what does that mean well yeah and the saddest hour for Americans statistically is Sunday at noon because that's the first time that Monday comes into the picture kitty so part of how you reinvent it is you change your attitude Christian's hopefully because we're in church hopefully we're a lot of times that I'll talk to pastors and they'll say I get them for an hour and then Monday hits them by the time they get to the car so it's a faith discussion too when pastors say I wish I knew where to reach people I say I know where they are 40 to 60 hours of the week what if we were on purpose about our careers our work life is you know we go to school we major in something hopefully we're interested in and then we work for you know 30 40 you're well if you're Pat you know forever but you know why do people stay in jobs they hate John well there's a number of reasons one it's fear I've had I had a dental hygienist tell me John I can't look for another job there's a lot of unemployed dental hygienists and I said well so is what you're saying until every dental hygienist has a job you can't look for a new one sometimes it's fear sometimes it's we're busy you know we say we're really busy and then you look at stats and go the average 21 year-old plays 10,000 hours of video games by the time they're 21 we have time it's about making time for things that matter so what I challenge viewers say is to say if you're gonna spend 40 years doing it I dare you to spend an hour this week being on purpose about is this the right job could I be better at my current job it's not about hating your job it's about figuring out how to give the most to where you're employed what I tell young usually journalism students or any young person is you know follow your passion do you tell people that to follow your does your passion eventually lead to money I think it can I think the big thing as far as follow your passion follow your dream is give it time I tell college students you know graduating from college is a huge do over leaving the military is a huge to do over I always tell college grads your first job won't be your dream job it's your first job it's your first job now your dream job well you had to make a couple of career changes you know leading up to your dream job even how can people handle these situations because changing a job it's one of the most restful things you can do it can be really stressful one is to have the right network of friends um you need friends in your life that will ask you hard questions we all have cheerleader friend that'll say any idea we have is good you need a smart friend that'll slow you down and say you're being impulsive you're being impatient you actually have a good job right now you're looking at it the wrong way it's not enough to be brilliant it's not enough to have skills you got that friends it's a combination relationships get you the first gig skills gets you the second hustle gets you every gig after that okay well what are you doing now you left your dream job we know you're a best-selling author this is your fifth book so we know you're writing what you know what did you do after you left well I worked on this book I wrote this book because I need it at first and I travel the country to see if other people are going through transitions and they are everyone is in a transition right now with the with our economy with our culture and so I'm writing books I'm going to companies to help them figure out how do you have fulfilled employees they produce better work so let's figure that out and I'm going to um you know networking organizations and it's been a lot of fun to help people around the country even when you're in your dream job sometimes you can feel stuck you can get in a rut or you can just feel like you know how do you get out of that well the the way that you get unstuck is you learn something new it's impossible to get stuck somewhere old if you keep learning something new so skills are the hammer that helps you break through a ceiling and so old dogs can learn nutria now I'm an old doctor oh oh no but we can all feel like that for me for instance I write a blog and asked a roomful of high schoolers who here reads blogs and none of them raise their hand I said well what do you use and they said we're all on snapchat so I'm in a position now that if I want to talk to this next generation of high schoolers who become college students who become employees I have to stay connected to the change in technology so you have to continually reinvent yourself if you want to have a long term job and not become a dinosaur and I know you have almost a million likes on Facebook and a lot of followers on Twitter and that's kind of important now especially if you're doing what you do and what I do and if you're in the media and for a lot of folks well it's important for everybody I mean today is the smallest social media will ever be it only gets bigger every day so you might not have a job yet that depends on social media but going forward your relationships your connections new job opportunities are going to happen via social media so what have you learned about your own do-overs that you can pass on to us that it takes patience that it always takes longer than you want that it's not easy nothing that matters is that you need friends that'll ask you hard questions leaders who can't be questioned end up doing questionable things show me a church who fell or a businessman fell and I'll show you an isolated leader right well this is the best career book ever written according to Seth Godin is that his name yes that's good that's except Godin so if you're just starting out or if you need to do over you know you want to get this the Fast Company named it as one of the books that you should definitely read this year it's called do over a rescue Monday reinvent your work and never get stuck and it's available in stores nationwide John great to meet you thanks for bail-in - that's great
