good evening ladies and gentlemen welcome to the old-time music show you've got a surprise tonight haven't you [Applause] very good bluegrass band the bluegrass tradition I don't guess they knowed what in the world had happened are we here in the valley when they drove up a real good bluegrass band and then our special guest is well it's wonderful to have him and one of the biggest supporters of the Carter folder and the Music Center is Johnny Cash and so we will talk more later on about about the building and the thing that's going on we're gonna make it bigger and a lot of things are going to happen around here but but right now let's make welcome my friend Johnny Cage [Applause] [Music] yeah [Music] hello I'm Johnny Chad [Applause] I'm glad to see you folks thanks for coming to see our show Gerry in sleep I hear the train are coming it's rolling around the bend and I'd seen the sunshine since I don't know when I'm stuck it in Folsom Prison and time keeps dragging on but that train keeps rolling going down to San Antone when I was just a baby my mama told me son always be a good boy don't ever play with guns but I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die [Music] I bet those rich folks eat in the fancy dining car they're probably drinking coffee and smoking big cigars well I know I had it coming I know I can't be free [Music] well if they freed me from this prison if that railroad train was mine then I'd moved it on a little farther down the line far from Folsom Prison that's where I want to stay and I live that long [Music] [Music] [Applause] as June said inspiration like she always has she's never been one for me except courage and inspiration I thank God for June Carter I love her with all my heart I would like to do a song that she wrote that she there her spirit went on but her body was laid to rest and I won't try to tell you how bad I miss her I'll just say that well I'd like to do another song that is important to me that that she requested be sung at her funeral she had asked me this was months before we knew anything was wrong she asked me to have the Oak Ridge Boys performed Larry Gatlin Emmylou Harris and I asked her what she wanted him lose thing and she said I ain't you been [Music] okay [Music] my leg this Sun is sinking fast the race is almost the strong is triumph now were past the triumph has begun oh [Music] here until I die I met her accidentally in st. Paul Minnesota and it's only up every time I heard a draw Southern drawl then I heard my dream went back downstream cavorting in Davenport and a followed you big river when you call [Music] got an old amber Baton Rouge River Queens rolled it home take this home alone down to your liens New Orleans so own I've had enough now my blues telling a girl she loves you big river more than me yes I taught so we've been willow how to cry cry cry and I showed the clouds outer cover of a clear blue sky and the tears afraid that one I'm gonna flirt you big river and I'm gonna sit right here until I die [Music] [Applause] thank you yeah thank you all right well you know I know we're making a lot of noise up here but especially Jerry with this electric guitar but it's okay don't worry we're not gonna throw you out I won't let them I first time I brought electrical instruments to the to the fold Genet Carter got on stage and said well I know that we don't allow anybody to plug in when they're here but June said that Johnny Cash was already plugged in when she met him [Applause] that's what my cousin Jeanette said all right here's a song that I have not performed live on stage for 25 years and I've been getting a lot of requests for it here's understand your man [Music] don't call my name out your window I'm leaving I won't even turn my head don't send your kid to folks to give me no talking I'll be gone like I said I'd say the same old thing that I've been saying all along you lay there and you bed keep your mouth shut until I'm gone don't give me that old familiar trying custom own understand your man meditate on it understand your man [Music] give my other suit to the Salvation Army and anything else I'm leaving bye I take in nothing that'll slow down my traveling while I'm untangling and I ain't gonna repeat what I said anymore while I'm breathing there and even breathe before obvious gone as a wild goose in winner you'll understand young man understand you understand your man [Music] [Applause] thank you [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music]

I wish I'd been turned onto Johnny Cash earlier. It wasn't until my grandpa died and my grandma had me put together some music for his memorial that I ever heard him even though Cash was one of my grandpa's favorite musicians.

Would have been fun to have a beer with my grandpa and listen to some Johnny cash but my grandpa died a month before I turned 21 and he was a stickler for rules.

This doesn't make me sad. It makes me smile. I have so many wonderful memories in my life as well as some really bad ones - I wonder how many times I was listening to Johnny during or shortly after those times. Too many to count. Dad working in the garage, the night before my grandpas funeral sitting around a fire with the cousins, roadtrips, after breakups, during my wedding reception. Thanks again Johnny.

My father didn't like a lot of music but his number one singer was Johnny Cash (I agree with him). My father passed away September 4th 2003 and Johnny Cash passed away September 12, 2003, (one week later). I remember feeling comforted by this because I felt that my Dad and Johnny were together. Our body eventually dies, but our soul lives on forever. I still listen to Johnny Cash and especially love the ones when he was the oldest.

Would have been even more tragic for such a legend to have just faded away
