oooh, Iris DeMent!! Saw her first on David Letterman i’m the early 90s. He introduced her as “Iris DeMent, rhymes with cement”. She sang Let the Mystery Be, and I was hooked!

Ok, quick bemusing story. I was invited to a small wedding to a beach in hawaii by a rather “rustic” couple. I went only because it was a block away. The mother showed up drunk in a stained sweatshirt. She loathed the man marrying her somewhat dimwit of a daughter. This groom sang “in spite of ourselves” as she walked down the “aisle”. It was crazy awkward. Best bit: when the bride said “this is the best day of my life!” I heard her mom mumble behind me “this is the worst day of my life”. Pretty sure the marriage didn’t take.
