John Mulaney on the Best Intervention Ever, Living with Jimmy After Rehab & Seeing Usher in Vegas

our first guest tonight is among the best of the best he turned a not so funny year into an exceptionally funny comedy special called John Mulaney Baby J the whole time I was in rehab it was very locked down for covet so we never got to leave the building but I've heard it's some rehabs they take you on field trips like the one I was at I guess in better times you got to go to a farm and meet a horse they do it a lot it's called Equine Therapy that sounds really nice but how bad do you feel for that horse it's born being like one day I'm gonna win the Kentucky Derby and its whole life is just junkies being like okay John Mulaney please welcome John Mulaney how are you how are you Jimmy I'm doing well your special is so funny you're you're really your drug addiction turned out to be hilarious it was uh yeah it worked out that the plan worked out well for everyone I'm very flattered you like it thank you really I watch it with my wife and my daughter-in-law and we all Oh I thought you were about to say your daughter and I was really nervous that that Jane watched this yeah no no she's eight years old we're gonna wait a few years until she sees this is Scared Straight type of thing maybe you also really had like one of the coolest interventions as far as like the guest list went and I've ever heard it was a good group I was I was flattered when I walked in like I honestly uh I was like this is a good lineup this is like for your consideration best Ensemble my my intervention yeah you could have won a sag award absolutely the um you know as far as the intervention goes and I hope you don't mind me asking questions I know you've talked about it at length but I'm curious as to like so you come to the intervention you go through the whole you don't know it's an intervention when you come to it right I thought it was dinner with two friends from college right it was not it was not and you were like two hours late for that dinner I was two hours late for that dinner but uh that would have made me madder than the drugs they were matter about that so all their concern for me as a drug addict really went away with the two hours late they were very mad I'm sorry I was late to dinner Coke addicts not known for their appetites it was not a a pressing concern so then at the end of this intervention and of course you listened to them and did what they asked what happens you go right into rehab that would that's what I was so during the intervention at one point I went oh is there a car downstairs and they went yeah and I was like oh my God they had made me so when I was walking in they said shoes off and I was like that's odd I don't normally have to do that I took my shoes off so that I didn't bolt once it started wow they thought of everything yeah they really they really thought about this um as if you would do cocaine but not walk around on the street without shoes it was pretty cold out but yeah I would have I would have hooked it in my socks I uh I then I said I'll go to rehab but can I go on Monday they said and this really stuck this really insulted me they said we don't believe you'll go on Monday oh really that's a that's questioning my character so then I go ah but I have to go I was living in like an Airbnb at this point and there's a plug and uh and so I go I have to go home and pack and they go we packed for you they bring out these two roller suitcases they packed never let 12 comedians pack you a bag for two months of winter it was it was all bomba socks and iPhone chargers and like late night show swag camel mugs oh good you had mugs while you're in yeah I had one one uh it was one suitcase was all like jackets like and then after you how long were you in rehab well uh two months two months then you wound up coming to my house and I'm curious about that because at that point did you feel like you couldn't trust any of your other friends oh no no I TR I trusted them but what happened was over the years you've been very kind and very very fun guy to hang out with but you've always been kind to people that come over for dinner and you say uh I don't know if you realize how often if anyone ever needs to stay in this guest house right it's always open right and most people have homes so they take that like oh Jimmy you're a mentioned I must have filed it away so I was in rehab then I was in a sober living situation and then I was coming to LA and I I called you and I said hey uh I'm between lives you've always mentioned this guy I remember thinking like I'm gonna call his bluff he said it enough time so I lived in his uh guest house yeah for a few weeks then another few weeks right yeah it was like it was like we'd adopted the sun it was yeah it was like uh that's it but I was treated so well I never saw you but uh no I never did but I'd wake up and there'd be a basket with Bagels he was like my sugar daddy like I'd wake up and there'd be money for the day go buy an outfit and uh and you guys a nice restaurant quality espresso machine not bad if you're thinking of having no home it gets it's real good over there you know what's funny to me which was kind of embarrassing me you're like um can I use the gym and I was like yeah I guess I should maybe be using the gym too but yeah yeah you can use that I was using the gym but you know fresh out of rehab uh still smoking a lot of cigarettes back then wasn't in the best shape so I uh you have you have a Peloton uh do you still yeah congrats uh so I didn't have Peloton shoes I think I squeezed into your wife's Peloton shoes I think I put on Molly's shoes and then I'd clip in the front of it and then I would start Peloton workouts and be so winded so quickly but then I thought oh they can see the saved workouts and it'll be like 20 minute workout build after three minutes you know failed after one minute just listen to the music so I wrote I kept them playing while I would basically sit on the floor and look at my phone I see oh unless you guys think that I abandoned a good hits and hits you're assuming I actually ever got on the Peloton which is not the case you did use you had like a mirror workout I had the mirror I have all the things yeah yeah oh did you use that yeah and I saw some of your saved workouts good The Good short looks like you do shorts yeah yeah real short intervals no like but hey he's a busy person you know and he's got he's got his sugar baby in the guest house he's got a family he's got a lot of people to take care of I feel like this is now an intervention of me yeah yeah spend a little more time with the kettlebells and yeah we're gonna take a break and we'll come back guess who's still gonna be here John Mulaney is here he's got a comedy special on Netflix called John Mulaney baby Jay you're in Las Vegas this week I know I was in Las Vegas my hometown your hometown I was at the Wynn uh doing some shows for a few nights yeah it was great what's it like being in Vegas when now you can't do any of the stuff that you were doing in all of the vice all the devices all the devices yeah so um it was good I mean I I sort of said I'm going to plan my days I'm gonna exercise I'm gonna get ready for the show and focus on the show and you know I'm not just gonna descend into Vegas uh uh activities and by the third day I was standing uh in a wet bathing suit uh playing baccarat while arguing with the Pit Boss whether or not the baby I was holding counted as someone under 18. because I because they have rules about who can be on the floor and I didn't think that my 17 month old son counts as a person I agree with you by the way I agree with you plus it's nice to see your father lose money and baccarat it's a good lesson it's a good lesson yeah did you go to any shows in Las Vegas yeah no I planned my nights you know after the show we would all go out to dinner or something and one night we went to see Usher uh yeah yeah he's got a big show a big show I he's the king of Vegas he uh do whatever you have to do to go see Usher really I didn't know us well I didn't know the name of a single Usher song But as I'm watching the show and hearing all these hits head after hit I realize I have heard all these songs over the past 25 years while I'm getting my hair cut like I've I was like I know this one I know this one and I've had like an existential crisis since it because I'm in Vegas I sell a ticket to come see me he sells a ticket to come see him what you get when you go to see Usher like I'm up on stage just talking about addiction and things this guy he was on roller skates at one point singing and dancing and interjecting positivity you know he kept pausing to go this we got one night it's all love I was like I've never paused my show to tell everyone that it's all love no no but I really I was like maybe I should start doing that and just say like we're all here tonight you know this is just keep reminding people that we're here he is important sometimes he also uh at one point you think uh oh I bet that's all the theatrics we're gonna get and then a cannon explodes and these fall from the sky this is uh Usher money this is um not legal tender but I trust this more than I do crypto because it's real and then you grab it it flies up in the air and everybody grabs in the air and you as a 40 year old man get down on your knees pick up pieces of hush money were there celebrities in the audience oh yeah okay so it was fight weekend too oh okay yeah so um so we're there and he pauses the show and he goes there's too many VIPs here oh and I was you know and he's like there and I'm here and I'm like okay see what happens yeah and uh you know it's all love we're all here and it's like first off Jermaine Dupree and I'm like yeah Jermaine Dupree he goes we were we came on this planet at different times but we're brothers you know and I was like we get it you're younger than Jermaine Dupri he's like L.A Reed is here Nelly is here Chance the Rapper is here wow and he's moving along and he gets right to me and I'm like this this could happen I bet he got a seating chart you know he's not just seeing people he goes oh man I didn't know you were here division you got on your Balenciaga that wasn't you no it wasn't me we're in Balenciaga I wasn't wearing a lot of Balenciaga you tell a story in the special about um being is it fair to say disappointed that people didn't recognize you in rehab a little bit yeah I I got there and like they had a welcome group when I got there and I sat down and I was like hi I'm John M they stared at me I told the story about leaving a newspaper that had a story about you yeah it ended up in the newspaper that I was in rehab and I left it out is that true though yeah I did do that I did do that also uh I was at a very Petty time in my life and you know I was grasping for what normalcy I could uh and then also like I would walk back from the cafeteria there was like a there was an area where the teens smoked you know okay and I'd like walk I made a point to walk past I was like this is my demo uh I just sort of like hey how's everyone doing you know hey like hey look who it is and uh they they weren't interested no no a lot of people would be happy that they weren't recognized in a rehab situation at first I was worried I would be but as the days rolled on I became quite concerned yeah nothing ever works the way we wanted to does it no nothing ever works out not even being institutionalized well I'm very happy that you're no longer institutional oh that's nice and uh yes and the specialist super funny it's called John Mulaney baby Jay you can get it on Netflix now John Mulaney everybody [Applause]
