John David Washington on Working with Samuel L. Jackson

I saw you in piano lesson and you were phenomenal in Brianna lesson congratulations now you're working with Samuel Jackson who's in the movie and his wife Latonya Richardson directs the play I said the movie the place so you are working with a married couple what's it like working with these two married people [Laughter] a learning experience it's it's a very passionate discussions about art about point of view character arcs uh but ultimately uh Latonya makes it known that this is her play that's what I was talking about and I'm and I'm proud of it because it is it is her this is her play because her direction is exquisite absolutely in the play now I salmon Jackson I've been around Samuel many times I want to know in rehearsal does he curse as much as we think he does ah sorry but yeah he does not he will not disappoint you if you're looking for some curse words you'll get them look I started cursing because of Samuel Jackson I [Applause] think oh that was like you can't curse him though I feel like that's intimidating no you go the other way I don't say any curse words because I know I can't they don't hold like you know no they don't you know now you come from this Hollywood royalty because your parents are Paulette and Denzel Washington now growing up with two people in the business did they encourage you to forge your path in acting all right not really they they they they supported me whatever I wanted to do but it came as uh as a surprise to them when I decided to pursue this in fact my father didn't even know I wanted to do it till I got the role of Ballers he didn't know I was even doing it and uh of course my mom knew and she was helping me read she drove me to my first audition because I was in a boot you know I had a torn Achilles and she's been giving me no she always giving me notes like she's seen to play 13 times she's been in L.A like the last 10 to 13 days still giving me notes from California so he's so funny because pauletta was there when when we came to see the the premiere of um of the piano lesson and I have to say to you as a mother I'm a single mom the way you honor your mother just like gives my heart Joy you always make sure that you honor your mom now and and and I don't know do y'all watch uh Reasonable Doubt okay Reasonable Doubt on Hulu your mama and she she be acting her butt off so when you see her in Reasonable Doubt like what do you what do you feel when you see your mother well just I remember she did a play um at the Billy Holiday Theater in Brooklyn a couple years ago too and um just seen her on stage seeing her on television seeing her like she was in a Spike Lee show as well I just get I'm so proud because this is this is who she is before she was a mother and a wife she was on Broadway so a lot of times I'm on stage thing talking about right before I go on stage I'm thinking about her journey and like how she's sort of returning to Broadway through me and she was you know she had a lot of jobs she was working a lot before she had me you know I joke with her sometimes hey you know I could have waited man you could have kept going but uh she always says you stupid boy but uh so I really like to feel like I'm representing so seeing her on stage and on screen is just uh it's encouraging it's inspiring to know that uh that is my bloodline oh I I love pauletta's Soul dog on much [Music]
