John Daly | A Short Golf Documentary

[Music] born in 1966 to jim and lou daly john daly was born in carmichael california the dailies were a middle-class family his father was a constructional worker and his mother a homemaker john's father worked incredibly long shifts and often had to travel long distances to commute to work because of his father's line of work the dailies moved frequently across small towns in the southern states it wasn't until the age of four that john and his family moved from california to a small town in dardanelle arkansas it was here at age five that john began playing golf for the first time he joined the bay ridge boat and golf club looking up to his idol jack nicholas but it wasn't long before the dailies were moving again at the age of 10 john and his family moved to locust grove orange county virginia john continued playing golf at lake of the woods golf course in locust grove where he won the spring club championship at age 13 defeating all male members the club promptly changed the rules baron juniors from future club competitions with no time to get comfy the daleys were moving again this time to zachary louisiana there john completed 9th grade and half of 10th grade and then moved to helios high school in jefferson city missouri the state capital here jon finally had a chance to concentrate on his sport becoming a letter man in football and golf in 1983 with john handling punting and place kicking juters helios football compiled a 10-0 record to this day jon still holds several school kicking records the same year in golf john was a missouri state team champion and the missouri state amateur champion he followed up his amateur success the following year winning the arkansas state amateur championship daley completed his final three months of high school at the dardanelle high school in the spring of 84 back at the bay ridge club that summer for a young boy to be moved around so much having nowhere to call home properly not sticking around long enough to make friends and always being the new kid must have took its toll on john it was 1984 when john joined the university of arkansas in a golf scholarship where the personality we all know today began to blossom he had a turbulent relationship with both his golf coaches steve loy and bill woodley due to john's drinking problems and infrequent class attendance john's love for party and didn't stop his progression in 1986 daley qualified for the u.s open as an amateur but failed to make the cut shooting 88 in 76 so it was no surprise when daley dropped out of college and turned professional in 1987 and it didn't take long for him to pick up his first professional win at the 87 missouri open he played the majority of his golf in minor events around the country and even had some success in south africa in 1990 he earned his full playing privileges on the ben hogan tour winning twice and even having some success on the sunshine tour edging david ferretti to the win this slow progress was encouraging for daley he was playing higher caliber events and beating more experienced and well-established international players he then finished the year in fine form winning the 1990 ben hogan utah classic and then finished tied 12th at the 1990 pga tour qualifying tournament earning him a place on the pga tour for the 1991 season on his fourth attempt during his time john married his childhood sweetheart in 1987 but divorced in 1990. daley showed increasingly strong play throughout his rookie year and then he got the lifeline of his life having not qualified for the pga championship john daly was ninth and the final alternative for the championship due to nick price withdrawing after his wife went into labour john had to drive throughout the night to make it in time just to claim his spot playing in just his third major and accompanied by nick price's caddy jeff squeaky meddling jon hadn't even been able to play a practice round the virtually unknown rookie opened up with rounds 69-67 and finished 69-71 giving him a three-stroke victory over bruce letski after that win daley gave thirty thousand dollars to a family of a man who died during the tournament due to a lightning strike the money was used by the family to pay college expenses for the man's two daughters daley was just starting his golf career and was not a wealthy man at this time his win generated enormous media coverage propelling the virtually unknown tor rookie to international fame who was also the first rookie to win a major title since jerry pate won the u.s open in 1976. daley was subsequently named a pga tour rookie of the year for 1991. his surprise victory and powerful swing provided the impetus for a cult-like fanbase composed of many people who had not been previously attracted to golf and from that point onwards daley became one of the most popular players on tour in 1992 john had a pretty decent season having several top tens and even managing a win at the bc open by six strokes to claim his second pga tour victory that year he married his second wife betty fulford and had his first daughter shiner hale december that year daley was charged with third degree assault for throwing betty into a wall at their home near denver the actual circumstances of the incident remained unclear since betty did not want to press charges daley has lately said in his autobiography that he did not nor has he ever hit or hurt a woman daley was struggling and his drinking and ravish lifestyle was affecting his game in 1993 daley had a terrible year apart from a third at the masters john barely had any top tens to his name john's game was suffering and he wasn't hiding his frustration on the course after walking off the course mid-round and thrown his scorecard at the official's tent daley was suspended by the pga tour after many pros on tour was slating his behavior john hit back once again claiming that many of the pga golfers were using cocaine and said that if drug testing was done properly on the tour he would be one of the cleanest guys out there this statement brought uprob among the pro golf community admitting defeat in 1994 daily entered alcohol rehab for three weeks feeling refreshed and like a new man jon returned to the tour at the 1994 bell south classic which he miraculously won after all the drama and the publicity he'd been through in the past months this was just what he needed john claimed this was his first win sober after daley's divorce with fulford was finalized in 1995 he married paulette dean that same year and had his second daughter sierra lin feeling like a new man and as healthy as ever daley entered the 95 open championship a huge underdog daley was in contention from the start but trailed behind new zealand's michael campbell going into a very windy final round at st andrews but it was italy's constantino rocco who sunk a 60-foot putt at the last to force a play-off that daley eventually won the 95 ryder cup was just around the corner due to his past drinking problems john daly was not selected and to this day he's the only two-time major champion never to be picked for a ryder cup team after reaching his peak daley began slipping back into bad habits his game was suffering once again due to his drinking in 1997 john withdrew from the us open after a round of 77 citing shakes from alcohol and exhaustion it's reported that daley was attending alcoholics anonymous meetings in 1998 daley recorded one of the highest scores on a single hole in pga tour golf history daley finished the 1998 season with two top 10 finishes he also withdrew from the sprint international and the disney classic and was disqualified from the fedex saint jude classic in 1999 daley won the jc penney classic which was neither a pga tour event nor a european event this was another bad year for john he withdrew from several tournaments and scored a high round of 82. he also withdrew from the us open whilst at 12 over power to top off the end of a whirlwind of a decade john's second marriage broke down in true john daly fashion he entered the new millennium marrying his third wife sherry miller with newfound happiness and all distractions gone jon's game started to pick up pace again daley won the bmw international open with a one-stroke lead over padraig harrington with a personal best score of 27 under par for four rounds this was the first time daley had won a european tour event in six years after daley had a comeback to the european tour he also had his best pga tour season since 1995. his best result was finishing fourth place at the bel canadian open with still plenty of work to do on the pga tour daley had nothing more to his name other than being inducted into the arkansas hall of fame a few wins on non-european and pga tour events and being added to the famous tiger woods video game his biggest prize so far this decade was the birth of his third child and first son born july 23 2003 john patrick daly the second after the birth of his son john looked like a new man once again he partnered with dunlop for his new equipment sponsor going into the 2004 buick invitational where he beat luke donald and chris riley in the playoff this was his first win in 189 tour events on the pga tour and that win skyrocketed him from 299th in the world to 50th 2005 was no different and another great year of goal for john narrowly missing out twice to arch nemesis tiger woods and vj singh in 2006 daley revealed in the last chapter of his autobiography they had a great difficulty with a gambling problem he claims to have lost over 50 and 60 million dollars over a 15-year period this includes losing 1.5 million in october 2005 after winning half that amount at the wgc american express tournament most of it lost on a 5 000 las vegas slot machine at win casino john didn't win another tournament until 2014. in that time frame john had been on one hell of a ride on june 8th 2007 daley and sherry got into a fight at a restaurant in memphis tennessee at the stamford st jude championship daley claims later that night his wife attacked him with a steak knife he showed up for his second round on friday afternoon with cuts and scrapes across his face authorities were contacted by him and they came to his house but his wife had already fled the scene and taken their son with her sherry later pleaded guilty to federal drug charges and was sentenced to a five-month prison term judge donna fields awarded custody of the couple's seven-year-old son little john to daley and jailed sherry for interfering with daley's court-ordered visitation rats and other failures to abide the court's orders in an ongoing divorce proceeding daley was also in court suing the florida times union for libel after a columnist claimed that daley failed the scoundrel sniff test a judge threw out the case in 2009 saying that daley had failed to prove the basis of the libel claim daley was also ordered by a judge to pay the newspaper over three hundred thousand dollars in legal fees things were bad on and off the course and in 2008 john's swing coach butch harmon quit saying that the most important thing in john daly's life is getting drunk daley responded by saying butch's lies kind of destroyed my life the sad thing is butch wasn't lying on october 26 2008 john was taken into protective custody by winston-salem police after being found drunk outside a hooter's bar john wasn't arrested but his mug shot was released to the media which resulted in negative publicity once again whilst his die-hard fans encouraged and looked up to daley's rock and roll lifestyle jon spoke out on dan patrick's show saying that much of his past struggle with alcohol was due to growing up with an alcoholic and abusive father after receiving a six-month suspension by the pga tour john set on changing his lifestyle choices and decided to get a lap band surgery which limits the amount of food someone can consume daily lost 100 pounds and was a slim trim 185 things started off great after finishing second at the italian open on the european tour but when returning to the pga tour at the buick open in 2009 daley shot a personal high 88. his swing coach blamed the surgery saying that jon had lost lots of muscle whilst losing weight taking away his powerful swing but daily blame the effects of his poor eyesight for his putting while slowly falling out of love with the game daley was channeling his emotions through music he released his second album quoting the album really is my life all of the songs have a meaning most of the record is happening or has happened in my life i hope people can relate to some of the troubles i have had along the way everyone around the world has problems and i want to connect with those people a much wiser john was emerging in 2014 he set a date for his comeback during the second round of the valspar championship john shot a career worse 90 which included an 8 over par 12 on the 16th hole his frequent failure to make cuts in high rounds has revived the debates on players who frequently received sponsor exemptions after a somewhat average season competing on the european tour and pga tour daley finished the season in fine form winning the beko classic 15 under par that was daley's first win in over 10 years after that win daley did tried to get his card back on the european tour but failed after finishing tied 46th and tied 50th in his next two tournaments a life that could only be thought to come out of a hollywood movie a true character that will never be replicated in golf ever again a true fan favorite and lovable guy that just got lost along the way after turning 50 in 2016 john was now eligible to compete on the champions tour he made his debut at the inspirity invitational in may where he finished tied 17th it was just good to see john back on the golf course competing to win and competing for the love not playing just to feed his habits at the same competition one year later john daly shot 14 under par to win the tournament it was his first win of a pga tour affiliated event since 2004 with no real schedule and only playing when he wanted to jon felt free while still admitting he battled demons every day he had better things to channel his energy into one being little john daly promises that we will see a little john on a pga tour one day and we can't deny his talent at such a young age inheriting his dad's swing and having his dad by his side to guide him down the paths he didn't take he really does have a lot of promise daley has plenty to keep him occupied he's got his music a wine company golf clothing brand and even a company that designs courses which has been extremely successful in helping build five courses already sadly in september 2020 daley announced he had recently battled with bladder cancer he underwent surgery to remove the cancer however doctors said there was an 85 chance of relapse to reduce the chance of recurrence daley plans to improve his previously unhealthy lifestyle which involved smoking and drinking large amounts of diet coke a truly incredible story of one man's life an icon in many ways and a true household legend yes he's struggled over the years and yes he isn't your front cover kind of guy but he touched so many hearts and inspired so many people and when the media in the pj wasn't there to catch him when he fell he had us his fans who believed in him every step of the way and will continue to do so no matter what path he travels down next you
