so we're going through the gospel of john and so if you want to pull out your bible today's message is going to be a little bit different because it's going to be a lot of storytelling and a lot of scripture reading because it it sets up john chapter 7. and so i'm really gonna set up john chapter seven in in in several different ways and so i just encourage you just to kind of go back two thousand years and let's just walk through together so just some background of some things that are happen happening there was three different feasts uh and even now that are that every jewish person their family guy back in jesus day was required to attend at the temple and if you could put that up please so every every um jewish person is required to attend a passover at the temple they were required to attend the feast of unleavened bread and required to attend the feast of tabernacles or the feast of booth or sakha or a sukkot and so like in what they would so that was the three of them the feast that we're going to deal with today in the gospel of john is sukhot which is the hebrew word for for uh like booth or it's the feast of tabernacles and this is what jesus is gonna go to and so during this feast they would celebrate um 40 years of wandering in the wilderness and so during the 40 years tents were set up similar similar to what you see and as they wanted for 40 years this is where they would stay and god miraculously provided over and over again whether it be supernatural food from heaven or whether it be water from a rock or whether it be like there was bitter water and and they had to strike it and it became sweet whatever it was like there's 40 years of wandering and sir during this festival it's a reminding that to remind you that god is faithful even in the most difficult parts of our lives as a matter of fact the same festival is happening now happens currently and so this will happen starting september 20th and so this is um rather i'm sorry i'm ahead of myself so for a week to set up boost here's what the boost looked like in in jesus day uh i'm sorry today this is what the bruce looks like today we have the one for jesus's day there we go so this is what they look like in jesus's day they would set these booths up and they would they would live in them for maybe a week or something today they're still doing it and they would look something like this and so different parts of israel depending where you are there's still some booze and some people still stay there the orthodox jukes might still stay there for the entire week some people will just they do their meal then they might go back to their home but still this idea of celebrating the 40 years of wandering of god's faithfulness and they also celebrated like the fruits of the labors and far the harvest time and water and so it's the celebration time that that takes place and this is what jesus is coming into seven days of celebration one of the events that took place in jesus day is the priest would descend uh to the southern border to the uh gehan springer to the pool of shalom and so the priests will go down to the pool of shalom they'd wander from the temple all the way down to this pool and there'd be a huge group of people with them and they would follow with them and the priests and all these guys who were there they'd follow down here and they would go to this pool of shalom which is also called the living water because if it flowed from a living spring and they would take a golden pitcher and they would dip it in this pool of shalom and then they would march back to the temple and put it in the altar and the other thing that would happen during this is the priests would be chanting isaiah 12 3 with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation so they would go down and they would take this this pool and they would they would take the picture and they would bring water up and with joy with joy you will draw waters for salvation and they would carry this thing back through and everyone would come and the people would also be singing some psalms and we're going to talk about both of those by the way this pool of shalom the next day after the event we're talking about today jesus actually heals somebody here at the pool of shalom and he if you recall he takes mud and he puts it on somebody's eyes and he's like hey go to the pool of shalom and wash you remember the story okay he spits on the mud puts it on his eyes and he says go to the pool and and wash and so that's what's happening the priest reads isaiah chapter uh 12 3. but there's context are you with me still so there's context to when the priest says with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation like what what are the listeners thinking about as the priests are going and they're dipping the water and they're coming back and they walk around the altar and they pour it out like what's happening what are the people thinking about when a priest is saying with joy you will draw water from the worlds of salvation it takes us back to isaiah chapter 11. and i'm going to do quite a bit of reading on it but the context is imperative and i promise you you will never read john chapter 7 the same you can't so here it goes this is the context of what the priests are saying throughout this whole ritual for seven days a shoot will come from the stump of jesse ah it's messianic remember the messiah would come out of the lynch of david isaiah 11 says he shoot will come up from the stump of jesse from his roots a branch will bear fruit the spirit of the lord will rest on him in the spirit of wisdom and of understanding the spirit of counsel and of might the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the lord and he will delight in the fear of the lord he will not judge but rather he will not judge by what he sees with his eyes or disciple what he hears with his ears but he but with righteousness he would judge the need he was just as he would give decision for the poor of the earth he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth remember this in the bible somebody about in the book of revelation about out of his mouth as a sword he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth with his breath his lips he will slay the wicked righteousness would be his belt faithfulness would be the sash around him all referring to the messiah and then look at verse six so there's something happening so verse six the wolf will lie down with the lamb anybody remember this the book of revelation the wolf will lie with the lamb the leopard will lie down with the goat the calf and the line and the yearling together a little child will lead them i don't know about you but i'm not putting my little kids in arms away of a lion anytime soon but there's a messianic thing that's going to happen the messiah is going to come and he's going to rule justly and he's going to reign supremely and there's going to be a kingdom that's set up we call it the millennial in our world today we call the millennial reign of christ where there's going to be peace and so as the priest is speaking this the hearers are going back to isaiah chapter 11. messiah the priest the king will rule they'll be reigning there'll be peace on earth and this this thing goes on and on in chapter 11 if you're not reading something i would encourage you to read isaiah chapter 11 this week it's great great reading about the messiah verse 12 comes into play in that day when all this comes apart when the messiah comes i will praise you lord although you were angry with me your anger has turned away and you have comforted me surely god is my salvation i will trust and not be afraid and then here's his this phrase the lord the lord himself is my strength and my deliverer he's become my salvation with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation oh my gosh do you get this jesus is about to go to this festival and they're chanting and looking for the messiah to come they're taking water from a living stream and dumping it on the altar the rock of salvation if you will and they're chanting for the joy of my salvation and and and drawing water from the wells of salvation they're looking forward to something listen to what the people are singing in psalm chapter 113 through 118 they sing this whole part i'll sing it for you [Laughter] who laughed so not appropriate if i was if i was roman catholic i would be singing the whole time but we're not so we won't um psalm chapter 113 i was gonna sing it but now i won't so much better you guys are awesome listen to 113 praise the lord they're saying this praise the lord praise the lord you his servants praise the name of the lord let the name of the lord be praised both now and forevermore like they're worshiping they're singing to god they're praising god rising from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets the name of the lord is to be praised the lord is exalted over all the nations his glory above the heavens who is like our god we sing this don't we who is like our god the one who sits and thrown on high who's who stoops down to look on the heavens and on earth like who is like our god who raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ashes who is like our god who's who sits them uh with sits with princes i mean like this this goes on in psalm 113 and 114 and and then you get to like 115 and it's just like it's amazing listen to 115. 115 they're singing not to us lord not to us but to your name be the glory lord let your name be glorified let your name be honored because of your love and your faithfulness and then why do the nations um say where is your god our god is in heaven and then they start mocking their gods your god listen to verse four but their idols are silver and gold made by human hands they have mouths but can't speak they they have eyes but can't see they have ears but can't hear they have noses but can't smell they have hands but can't feel like do you remember some of this stuff as we get to the new testament this is going on the the the priests dipping the water from living water streams of living water carrying it on the altar messianic promise the people are saying how great is our lord how awesome is our god how we need him how he's how he's the real god like all this takes place when jesus steps on the scene and we'll come back to that a moment so in john chapter 7 if you were here last week we talked about how the disciples rather jesus's brothers wanted jesus to go to the feast of tabernacles to the feast of booths and begin to do some miracles remember last week we talked about that jesus said no it's not my time but jesus goes by himself and in the middle of the week he starts doing some teaching and i wish i had more time he starts talking about verse 17 hey if you want to do my father's will you'll be able to discern it if my teaching is accurate in other words here's what he says like if you really want to know god's will you have to have a heart that wants to know his will that's pretty deep like like sometimes we're like i just don't know the will of god but you're not really seeking his will you're really seeking for god to bless your will don't anybody guilty like i don't know what god wants me to do you know what he wants you to do you just don't want to do what he wants you to do so you're saying god i don't know you will but here jesus is saying listen if you want to know the will of god first seek a heart that wants to obey his will and when you have a heart that wants to obey his will and then his will be made clear to you it's about the condition of our heart and so this whole teaching comes on about hey you must be willing to learn you must have a heart that's willing to listen and then he talks about judging correctly and how easy it is we judge the outside what we see in appearance and how god like you know jesus healed someone on the sabbath and they were upset because there's a sabbath and jesus is like you can circumcise a boy on the sabbath but i can't heal somebody if you don't don't know what circumcision is ask your neighbor at some other time and an interesting story let me know how that goes for you verse 32 they try to arrest him jesus says hey i'm going away to a place you can't go and they're like where are you going great stuff again if you're not reading anything john chapter 7 this week this jesus teaches throughout this feast this festival but on the last day on the last day the priests go to the pool of shalom they take the picture the chanting about the wells of salvation they're going up to the tabernacle the people are saying about the goodness of god and the mercy of god and how great god is on the seventh day the priest will walk around the altar seven times and he'll take that picture and he'll dump it out and the water will pour down the altar this is cool prophetically speaking here's what zechariah says on that day the day the messiah comes living water will flow out from jerusalem from the altar the lord will be king over the whole earth on that day there will be one lord in his name the only name zechariah chapter 14 8 and 9. in ezekiel chapter 47 verse 1 there's a vision that ezekiel has and he says the man brought me back to the entrance of the temple the same place the priests are right now the same temple they're worshiping at i saw water come from under the threshold living water of the temple toward the east for the temple face the east then listen to this the water was coming down just as they're pouring that water right the living water the pouring it the water was coming down from under the south side of the temple south of the altar the vision goes on it talks about how this living water begins to pour down the temple on the southern steps this is cool too because we sat on the southern steps we visited israel twice still there the same steps are still there like and we're sitting there and i'm like two hours just praying like the vision is those same steps the living water flowing down going into the dead sea and when it hits the dead sea it comes alive so as that water begins to flow through the temple from that sacrifice from the the altar everything it touches begins to live becomes alive and alive and alive and it grows and expands and this living water flows and flows like you get it seventh day jesus steps up at some point seventh day after the celebration on the eighth day and with a loud voice scripture says like they want us to get this the people are there they're talking about the messiah the talking about the millennial reign of christ and here's what jesus says if anyone is thirsty if anyone's looking for water if anyone is looking for something to quench their thirst their spiritual thirst their hunger if anyone is thirsty let them come to me and drink whoever believes in me as the scripture has said streams of living water will flow from within him oh do you get it everything they have been celebrating living water flowing prophetically touching the nations healing anointing reaching people forgiveness of sins like everything they've been singing about jesus steps into place and he says here i am come to me and you'll receive living water first corinthians 10 describes jesus as the rock that gives weather water remember the rock in the in in the in the 40 years of wandering they struck the rock and out of that rock came water and corinthians paul says hey jesus is that rock jesus is the sacrifice jesus is on that on that altar when they pour the water and it begins to flow that is christ flowing out for you and for me he's that living water and so when i think about that verse there's a few things that i just want to talk to you about briefly in the next few moments that i have the first thing that is this that the first thing implied is this that like we have to recognize our thirst if anyone is thirsty come to me if you're going to be filled if you're going to have the holy spirit refresh you if you're going to receive all that god has for you you have to be thirsty you you can't drink you won't drink you won't partake you won't accept you won't receive if there's not a thirst to receive to take the first thing that jesus says is if you're thirsty come to me psalm 42 david's cry is he as a deer pants towards the streams so my soul pants for you as my my soul thirst for god and here's what's interesting about thirst do you realize that that you're naturally thirsty for the things of god ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 11 says that god put eternity in the heart of humanity that means that you naturally are thirsty for the things of god the problem is is that your mind doesn't comprehend the spirit's wound and calling for the things of god like your spirit man within you you are spirit man and body and your spirit man is crying for more of god it's pleading for more of god the problem is we can't articulate it as the things of god and so we say man something's wrong with me i'm not feeling right something's not good and so we get on youtube we start scrolling we're getting social media we start just flipping through things or maybe we start calling a friend or maybe we start getting into a good movie and we find all these other things and our spirit's saying i need god i need god i'm not feeling fulfilled i'm not feeling what like like like i'm like i have a purpose but we can't comprehend it so we start going to all these other things trying to fill this god void this god need listen do you realize that you are thirsty for water does anybody realize you have a natural thirst for water i mean do you wake up every morning and say to yourself you know what today i'm just going to be thirsty for water no one does that no one gets up and says yep i i don't know what's happened today but i just i can't i'm just not thirsty for water just like it's not happening i don't know why i just want to be thirsty for water it's natural but what what do we do sometimes when our body thirsts for water what do we do we go into the cupboard we grab some twinkies does anybody else do that like you don't even know it's water you just know something's not right and your body's saying water and your mind is saying twinkies or you go in the fridge and you grab a bottle of coke or you grab a cup of coffee or grab mountain dew or whatever it is and you're like your body's screaming water but you can't articulate the fact that you need water and so you try to fill like does this make sense so you're trying to fill this this this desire for water with something that's not really water and you can kind of get some water out of it it's not like mountain dew is bad for you amen it's not like twinkies are necessarily you know bad for you per se but you but but there's something more pure and listen sometimes when we go to other things it's not that social media is bad it's not that movies are bad it's not that you know friends are bad it's not that trying to work is bad but it's in trying to find all of these things to make you feel a god need that only god can fill becomes a problem implied all you who are thirsty is we have to recognize our thirst we have to recognize that we need god and that sometimes when life seems out of sorts it's our spirit crying out for the presence of god it's our soul crying out abba father daddy god abba father you have a thirst that god wants to fill but it can't be filled until you first recognize the thirst i think the most important thing or one of the most important things you need to know about yourself is that you were made to live on god like you were made to live for god and everything else is going to distract and still and rob and distort all that god wants to do in you and through you you were made to be with god your soul is thirsty the second thing that i see all you that are thirsty come and drink is jesus never has any thought of earning he doesn't say all to you that have cleaned up your life first come to me and drink and i will give you thirst or i will give you you know what you need rivers a flow of living water he doesn't say get everything lined up first get you know make sure that you're doing the devotionals first make sure that you have no sin that you're struggling with make sure that your mindset is perfect he doesn't say make sure that your marriage is perfect he doesn't say make sure your kids are perfect he doesn't say make sure that your job is perfect he doesn't say make sure that anything's perfect he simply says be thirsty and come and so i had this idea that somehow maybe i have to clean things up first or maybe i have to get things right first maybe i have to change something before i can really give god all of me is just a lie listen you can't be the person god wants you to be without the presence of god in your life like you cannot be god's person without god helping you to be that person the fruit of the spirit right is love joy peace patience long suffering you can't have the fruit of the spirit if you don't have the spirit living in you and so the holy spirit would call us come let me fill you let me refresh you let me do a work in you let me change your heart let me change your mind come right now whether you've been saved for 80 years or you don't know christ at all the holy spirit calls us and he says come come and out of your belly will flow rivers of living water come the third thing or implication that i get out of all you who thirsty come and drink is when we ask we will be filled when we ask god is faithful to fill us each and every time each and every day out of your belly will flow rivers of living water it's interesting i'm not a greek scholar or theologian but in the greek there is no commas there's no periods it's just the you know the sentences flow and we try to put it together as best that we can so there's two different thoughts in this verse of what happens one thought is hey it's supposed to say all you are thirsty come and out of jesus's belly will flow rivers of living water and they get that idea that as the as the um the altar of the sacrifices waters flowing so out of jesus was flowing rivers of living water and touching everything and comes in contact and that's true that's biblically speaking the other one of the most common one is referring to you and to me that when we come to christ out of our bellies will be rivers of living water and then we touch everything we come in contact with the point is that both are accurate both are true both jesus touches everything as the river the living water but when we receive the holy spirit and we're filled with the holy spirit how many know that you also impact everybody you touch that out of your belly is rivers of living water and the bible says that that's referring to the holy spirit in john john 7 39. he said this about the spirit who those who believed in him were to receive free as yet the spirit had not been given because jesus was not yet glorified and so we know when we get saved we get the holy spirit in us when we get baptized in the holy spirit there is a river of water that begins to flow either way like jesus has a lot for you and he's faithful to fill you the day of pentecost comes six months later the holy spirit is poured on all believers tongues of fire a great outpouring this is what jesus says in john 14 i will ask the father and he will give you another helper to be with you forever even the spirit of truth the world cannot receive i'm not going to spend a lot of time on the holy spirit but i just as we get through john john spends a lot of time and we'll start spending more time the next couple weeks as we go through john but i just want to encourage you to start your day recognizing that you're thirsty and simply saying holy spirit would you fill me today would you fill me today
