college football analyst joel clack good morning good morning good to have you to break this one down what happened last night I was wild I wasn't expecting that I knew Clemson was very good but I certainly wasn't expecting that and by that I mean Alabama and Nick Saban being thoroughly in every single facet during every point in the game outcoached mm-hmm I mean every single facet Nick st. Nick he got totally count now I can't oh yeah we got the experts saying they had red zone failure seat to me the game plan and situational football that's when you go to is your team prepared are you succeeding in situational football they had red zone failures fourth down failures on three different fourth down opportunities they had panic decisions going forward on fourth down in your own territory in the first part of the second quarter that was a panic decision from it was a but fake field goal was a it did work but to me it was a panic all right the fake field goal to not have the ability to call timeout when the look from the defense is that they're ready for a fake field yeah they're sitting there with levels of defense you're trying to run the holder on a fake field goal that didn't make any sense there was no adjustments on offense when it was clear that the pressure package from Clemson and Brent Venables was a problem yes they did not see where the pressure was coming to could not see what was going on and they never adjusted to that you had six penalties and the third down dominance from Clemson yes dominance that probably was a different ball game 10 of 15 Clemson was on third down Bama was 4 of 13 that you can't win the football game when you're losing the turnover margin so every single facet of this game went Clemson's way both on the field with the players and on the headsets between the coaches here's a little step further when you operate your program as a factory at some point that cycle will get you I'm not saying that it's going down right now but at some point you're gonna hit a moment where that factory gets you because the cycle of players and coaches are gonna end up wrong for you Nick Saban has lost 13 assistant coaches over the last four years 13 that's a staggering amount and every one of these four games against Clemson he is face clemson with a different coordinator duo every single one of the four meanwhile Clemson's lost two assistants and had the same coordinators for every one of these four games plus they had their seniors back from last year who ended up staying in school would this game have looked different if Minka Fitzpatrick and Doron Payne and Calvin Ridley were on the field and we're all early NFL Draft guys last year so I'm saying one program operates more like a family one operates more like a factory and the factory cycle got Nick Saban this time I'm not saying it's gonna get him in the future as well cause I think both can still work but it got him this time and they were thoroughly outcoached because of it so are you saying his reputation took a hit last night I think Bill Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are very similar in the respect that even a Super Bowl loss for those guys doesn't necessarily take away from their overall legacy because the level of dominance that we've seen for the length of time that we've seen it have a set has established their legacy I think for eternity I think Nick Saban is gonna go down is one of the two best coaches in the history of the sport mmm yeah Brady and Belichick never had that happen to them in a superb that's true I know okay that was true for just a divisional round before they got to the Super Bowl but never on the biggest day not on the biggest stage right I agree with you and it seems to me that Clemson was gonna pressure all night and what they did is that you look at what Alabama likes to do they like to have their receivers in tight play faith in the hit with the pop passes what and sometimes they'll motion it in what Brent Venables was doing is that when you motion that guy in tight he was bringing the Blitz off the guy that was motioning in and I'm like okay you see what he's going to do open these splits up because we did that a lot skip because a lot of times you want that slot defender to come from distance that's right and so if you're lining up tight and he's coming light it up let's see we're here so maybe now we can see it even more clearly but they brought the guy in to his face it was a little too left-handed they brought the guy this face into it never saw him bad game plan you yes that was as bad as Tua's played in his career so far except that Georgia game was pre I know he's hurt but but it was off yeah he lost his confidence in his poise in both those games in Georgia and that one last night and in defensively skip like I said I've seen they run into rail they run two rails up the same and safety doesn't move back the middle of the field that's right what are you looking at what did what did coach say but what do you guys go over the week leading up to this game because it was like it was like whatever Clemson wanted they got hmm they were moving the safety so that the nearside on the seam side that near side safety was moving down into like a buzzer or kind of a sky look if you want to call it that and the the far side safety his job is to push and if he sees a vertical in his face that vertical and he didn't do it nope he left him wide open Ross runs for a touchdown crazy so bottom line to me Nick Saban's reputation last night took an even bigger hit than to his NFL stock took last night because I'll start with tua under fire we saw that 19-year old for Clemson he stood in the face of that rush again and again and cut loose and I saw tua after the the early blitzes started getting to him it got to him psychologically and he was seeing ghosts he was flinching he was thrown off his back foot you don't think that affects his stock I do well you said Saban's legacy has hurt more than to his stock yeah I would totally agree with that but okay but it mix Amon took a big hit last night and two is also dead but I said even bigger was Saban to me because here we go again I'm told that his specialty his forte is coaching defense correct especially he takes hands-on care of the DBS that's what he coaches in practice well once again and this has happened regularly through the career as we've often talked about here on this show he got torched with the pass it wasn't they got run off the field they got thrown off the football field and I want everybody to remember it was 16 to 14 Alabama early in the second quarter so some things were going right and I got to give 201 prop here because at to the early interception and that was just a panic throw to me where he just didn't know what to do with the football and it wasn't that he got fooled he just threw it into traffic it's two receivers and two DBS and one people saw it he did and one DB just said oh thank you I'll take this to the house and then he comes right back he goes to the sideline this is I'm giving him credit for this he said this is on me and he goes right back out and he threw it angry he threw the bomb to little Judy for the touchdown and and he dropped it right in his breadbasket for seven points in that made at seven all and in its 16 to 14 Alabama and then Saban gives up 30 unanswered points that's hard to do 30 unanswered points on that stage when your forte is defense and it it comes down to this when Nick Saban can just flat out out talent you when when he can dominate you physically he's really good and he's rolled up those national jet roll tide but when he gets a team that is as physical as he is with coaches who are more clever than he is on the fly in-game strategy adjustments or come with a better plan that he has he's often in trouble because once it goes south for Alabama and I don't know if we have time for me to list all these games in which he gave up 40 plus and 500 yards once it goes south for this defense it goes way south and it went way south last night and if we go back to the second half Oklahoma Cuyler Murray once he got in rhythm and found out once he figured out how to do it against Alabama and once the defense played assemblance of defense in the second half for the University of Oklahoma again from that point on it's 68 230 that Alabama got outscored second half against Oklahoma and the four quarters last night well that's embarrassing yeah that this this was looking like a big 12 defense to me last night let me let me ask and float this out there okay it seemed like to me there was a team last night that looked like they had prepared for a month for this game and one team that had prepared like a normal game week for one week is there at least a chance that Clemson looked at Notre Dame all the similar opponents with that Notre Dame schedule where they faced ACC opponents and they say you know what guys we're probably gonna win this game we're good enough to win this game let's start preparing for Alabama early even before Notre Dame when Oklahoma got the full attention of Alabama that whole month because they had Cuyler Murray they had that offense that could get going that offense scored 34 points after it was 28 nothing there there is I think that there is a chance that clemson was looking at Bama this entire break and they look at that Bama last year we buy the way is why Trevor Lawrence is the quarterback yeah and not Kelly Bryant and and that was proven out in the semi final last year and the confidence issue is I think a real thing I'll go even a step further if you go back even to the SEC Championship game basically Bama had one stretch of football between Georgia and oh you where they were dominant and they went on a run late to comeback against Georgia and then the 28 nothing run early against oh you if you take those that stretch out they were outscored 106 247 in the last three games outside of that one stretch that that's a little alarming for me and one thing that you'll hear around the country and I spoke with several offensive and defensive coordinators around the country over the last month or so they will say to his brilliance the wide receivers brilliance and the overall dominance of the players has overshadowed the fact that this is clearly they said clearly quote/unquote Nick Saban's weakest coaching staff that he's had so far at Alabama okay and I think eventually that caught up with them with the lack of adjustment the lack of understanding formational offensive football and where the pressure was coming from Brent Venables and finally back to the fake field goal Nick Saban looked at me on the sideline like an overwhelmed grandfather because he seemed like the moment had just just taking him over where he was desperate and wait were fourth and six let's try the fake field goal what and the concept of it was so bad because it's too far to truck like like you made the point earlier just let to a throw for it if that's because you're gonna let the third-string quarterback as a holder stand up and follow the her into the hole the kickers gonna be your lead block against that team against a safety fit but playing safe huh if you remember last night skip Alabama went for it they punted the ball which terms came in they punted the ball got the ball at the 1 there was almost 9 minutes Clemson never gave the ball back they get the ball on their own 1 and they take a knee at Alabama spot that's incredible and then they broke this period yeah that's the first time you can honestly say skill Alabama has been broken Alabama has broken a lot of teams as coach sabers been there Clemson broke him that land may be the only other time was Zeke running free late against Ohio State in 2014 but I haven't seen it like you're talking about not like that by the way I think it will be overblown in the next couple I caution everyone on the take that Alabama is gonna be trending down I don't think they're trending down I think you this was the right cycle for Clemson to catch him remember now 28 commitments in this recruiting class 27 of them were 4 stars or higher the only one that's - Alabama - Alabama the number one recruiting class in the country the only one that's not a 4 star 5 star number-one kicker in the country and that's some of faster than game that they've dropped it miss Matt p80 the extra points coming into the game will be this is the kid is will Rikard from Hoover Alabama I'm afraid Trevor Lawrence is going to be back well collar more he's got another year maybe he comes back a rattler number one quarterback in the country probably gonna be your oh you court thank you yo Arizona on that note hey the hardest part is that it's ending in such a fun season and we got a couple months to wait but [Music]
