Hey guys! Here's the link to the full film on my YouTube channel. Thanks to everyone that supported the project and helped along the way.
For anyone that would like to support future projects I've put together a digital download package that includes the full film plus hours of extra content and some digital artwork. This can be found here: www.eat-films.com/store
Thanks again and hope you enjoy the film.
Dan
This feels like an hour and a half of people just talking about how much they love jiu jitsu... I love jiu jitsu but honestly, it got repetitive after about forty minutes. I can't imagine anyone who doesn't train watching this for an hour and a half.
I must be honest. I stopped watching at ~45 mins.
It's clearly a work of passion featuring passionate people. That's cool. But in filmmaking terms alone, it leaves a lot to be desired.
There's only so much mileage you can get from talking heads saying "Jiu-jitsu is..." before it becomes monotonous. It begins to resemble a lifestyle advertisement. I waited to see if it'd develop beyond this by, say, a third in but it doesn't as that was its entire treatment! It's a pity as there's so many fascinating avenues left unexplored.
Some missed opportunities:
And so on...
Without any of this it locks out a general audience and becomes a sort of vanity piece, preaching to the converted.
edit: punctuation.
Really looking forward to watching this when I get home.
Also thanks for how quickly you put this out. You've announced, funded, filmed, edited, and released in the time that "Redbelts" has put out an update.
Hey everyone, thanks for watching and I really appreciate the feedback both good and bad. I am always looking to improve so everything will be taken on board.
For me, I wanted this piece to be a film that shown the positives that come from training Jiu-jitsu and what it is about the sport/martial art that makes it so special to everyone thats involved in it. In that regard I didn't intend to raise any arguments or highlight the problems, get into the whole sport vs self defence debate - it was never billed to be that kind of film. I'm not saying that those issues aren't important or would be interesting they just weren't relevant for this film.
I kind of wanted this film to be aimed at someone who is curious about jiu-jitsu or maybe just getting into it and wants to know more about the lifestyle and as a piece that highlights some of the positive aspects that come with training jiu-jitsu.
Again, thanks for the positive and negative feedback it's all being taken on board and I look forward to working on some new ideas soon.
Best, Dan
So far I'm 40 minutes in and it's been nothing but a continuous circlejerk over how amazing Jiu Jitsu is and how it improves EVERYTHING in your life.
Chris Haueter is a really quoateable guy
Its so weird that everyone is saying they stopped at ~45 minutes. Thats exactly where I stopped too.
I don't want to lie.... I downloaded your movie. I would also download a car if I could figure out how to.
