hey everyone today we're talking about Sukkot which is the Feast of Tabernacles it's one of my favorite times of the year in Israel it's one of my favorite festivals in Israel and it's really exciting to celebrate and today we're talking about how Jesus fulfills Sukkot [Music] okay so what does the name Sukkot mean and where is it found in the Bible that's what we're gonna look at here in Leviticus 23 we're not going to read all of it but it's found in Leviticus 23 33 through 44 so the first part says the Lord said to Moses say to the Israelites on the fifteenth day of the seventh month the Lord's festival of Tabernacles begins and it lasts for seven days the first day is a sacred assembly do you know work really important here it's a Sabbath right it is a total day of no work whatsoever so for seven days present food offerings to the Lord and on the eighth day hold a sacred assembly and present food offerings to the Lord it is the closing of the special assembly do no regular work all right so the first thing that we see here in Sukkot just like we see in just about every other festival is that it's a Sabbath at the very beginning and the very end of Sukkot you have Sabbath day so you get two Sabbath's out of this one which is really nice you get a time to rest and relax and you are not permitted to do any work which is kind of nice okay so what does Sukkot actually mean this is the plural form for suka in Hebrew which means tent some people translated as a tabernacle or booth and this specific suka is supposed to be a temporary living space so this is what God says in Leviticus 23 he says that all Israelites are supposed to live in these temporary shelters for seven days and they're to live there so that your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt I am the Lord your God so this is a way for the Israelites to remember what God had done for them in Egypt remember they were slaves in Egypt for a long time and then they went into the wilderness the goal was the promised land right the goal was to get to the promised land and God knew that once they got there that after generations had gone by they might forget what God did for them so this was supposed to happen every single year as a reminder of what God had done for them while they were in Egypt and also while they were in the wilderness because remember God provided for them in the wilderness as well all right so so far we've seen that the Israelites have been given a Sabbath they've been given the Sukkot to remind themselves of what God has done for them all throughout history and the other part of this is the offering they are supposed to give food offerings every day during Sukkot now this is a basic way of understanding that God is their provider he's the one that's going to take care of them now they do have to obey God's commandments that is in Leviticus 26 and 27 that's part of entering into the holy land but what God does for them is he provides for them and these offerings are a tangible way of remembering that one of the interesting things about this festival is that we see Jesus actually go to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles he kind of went in secretively he he knew that his time wasn't ready yet so this is one of the few times that we see Jesus go to Jerusalem to celebrate a festival like this but when he shows up he says something very interesting and we can find that in John 7:37 through 38 and he says this on the last and greatest day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink whoever believes in me as scripture has said rivers of living water will flow from within them and John goes on to say that Jesus was actually talking about the Holy Spirit that they would receive after Jesus had departed Paul says in first Corinthians 6:19 that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and this is important when we look at what Jesus did in fulfilling Sukkot we believe that there is this analogy that Sukkot are our bodies right that are our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit but our bodies are tents or Tabernacles and so that's exactly what God did through Jesus God came to earth in a human flesh and a human tent and he established himself as 100% God 100% human and that's a beautiful thing because we have a God that doesn't just sit on high but we have a God who comes to earth and redeems us and rescues us now we all so see that Jesus is very intentional that when we follow him when we live with him and and and do the things that he's asked us to do we are given the Holy Spirit and this is really important because we believe that we are living in a foreign land right our this kingdom the kingdom of God is not of this earth and so we are very much like the Israelites we may not be in the promised land yet but we know that our God is our provider he's the one that sustains us with rivers of living water and he gives us a new life and a new hope thank you so much for watching this week make sure to check out the full article at Israel experience 360 com [Music]
