Irukandji jelly fish are way more dangerous than the large box jellyfish. They are only about a 1cm in size. So swimming in the netted areas we have on the beaches here in Australia won’t help you. When we go fishing on the reefs here you can look down into the water and see the tiny little pricks going under the boat quite easily because the water is clear. In closer on the beaches the bottom gets stirred up and it makes it really hard to see them. You need to be careful because they are in swarms sometimes, so you can be hit by multiple jellyfish instantly which is like a death sentence. I have been stung by a box jelly on the leg. The pain is pretty intense but I wouldn’t want to be hit by a irukandji, I have seen footage of scientists who volunteered to be strung in a hospital setting for research and they were completely maxed on morphine and still in incredible pain. We keep vinegar on the beaches here and in our boats just in case, it helps neutralize the stinging and venom, if worst comes to worse and you have none, you have to get someone to pee on it.
