for 50 years Jeremiah told the people of Israel the same thing where Isaiah looked at the horizon of existence and he saw eternal restoration Jeremiah looked like right in front of them and saw imminent destruction then saw it actually happened prophesying before during and after the fall of Jerusalem and the kingdom of Judah the key word in Isaiah was Redemption the key word in Jeremiah is pentanes chapter one is the call of Jeremiah 2 through 29 judgment on Judah 3333 the New Covenant that's the best part 34 through 45 the fall of Judah 46 to 51 judgment on the nation's 52 the destruction of Jerusalem this book it meant it's like a it's it's like watching a rocket explode Jeremiah's journeys pretty rough he told the King to his face you won't listen to me this is the book of going into exile let's get started in Chapter 1 we see the call of the priest turned prophet Jeremiah when he was a teenager God spoke to him and said before I formed you in the womb I knew you and before you were born I consecrated you I appointed you a prophet to the nation's to get into a bit of a Moses esque argument over it arguing with God is not a good idea then God showed him a vision of an almond branch and God said this I'm watching over my word to perform it the word for almond in Hebrew is similar to the word for watch but there's another part to the meaning of this vision the almond branch is one of the first plants to bud and the last to bloom it's a picture of God's words coming long before their fruition and being patience Jeremiah's called he's on a mission chapters 2 through 29 or 14 messages of judgment to Israel given in monologue and dialogue they broke the Covenant they didn't follow the commands and Exodus and Deuteronomy and God is righteously mad 2:26 says as a thief is shamed when caught so the house of Israel shall be shamed 5:3 says they've made their faces harder than rock they've refused to repent that's the key verse in the book by the way 820 says Jeremiah says the harvest is past the summer is ended and we are not saved it's just intense discourse God also sends visions and commands Jeremiah with pictures for the people in chapter 13 God has Jeremiah hide dirty underwear in the ground yeah this really happens and he hasn't dig it up later and say this evil people shall be like this loincloth which is good for nothing whoo other pictures jars of wine symbolizing drunken people verbal prophecies of judgment by sword famine and pestilence that one gets said 17 times repeated condemnation of lying prophets like pusher Hananiah shamaya the Potter and the clay Jeremiah had to take up a pot and smash it in front of people symbolizing yup judgment good and bad fix Bryan property burning his whole book and writing it again Jeremiah is struggling this is awful content to have to deliver to people but there's hope hidden in the pages in Chapter 15 Jeremiah says your words were found and I did eat them in your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart for I am called by your name it gets worse for Jeremiah he gets his head put in stocks he gets beaten he gets thrown in jail he gets thrown into a cistern Oh what's that you don't know what a cistern is it's a big massive jug that they store water in honestly when he was down there he might have been thinking this is a bit easier than the stuff God was asking me to say to these people but he continues to prophesy clearly exactly what God commands him to say to Kings to the people to anyone God tells him to chapter 23 contains the clearest picture of Jesus in the whole book verse 8 says I will raise up for David a righteous branch and he shall reign as king and deal wisely that's our Jesus moment for the Book of Jeremiah it's a continuing messianic picture of a seed and a tree cut down to the stump with a righteous Messiah growing up out of it ultimately fulfilled by Christ and pictured in Paul's writing - there isn't just a victor here though pictured by David there's also a villain pictured by King Zedekiah might remember him failing in second Kings more than a dozen times in the book he's the Anti David he's the last king of the last line of the last Kingdom God says in chapter 24 like the bad figs that are so bad that can't be eaten so I will treat Zedekiah king of Judah oh it's a crazy prophecy imagine if someone said hey I'm gonna smash this Apple and like that I'm gonna smash the President of the United States plus it actually happens before the end of the book it's one of Jeremiah's main prophecies here's the rest of his main prophecies Zedekiah the anti King would be destroyed the Messiah would be a descendant of David Babylon would take Israel into exile for 70 years the people would survive the exile and come home including the wonderful prophecies to the exiles in 29:11 and then lastly that Edom and some more surrounding nations would be destroyed okay let's get to something better chapters 30 through 33 contains something huge the new covenant 31 31 through 37 is the beautiful prophecy of the future covenant with Christ the greatest covenant better than the one with Abraham for a land better than Moses covenant law better than David's covenant of lineage this is the ultimate covenant created and sealed in God's own blood this is the covenant of love God is saying the times coming where we're gonna do something totally new this new covenant wouldn't begin for over 500 years but when it did begin it would extend through today this is the covenant that you are under it's enjoyed by all people who know Jesus not just the Jewish people who know him it's the covenant that requires nothing from those who enjoy it it's the Covenant of eternal love and life through Jesus Christ there's four major covenants in the Old Testament and they've broken all of them Abraham was about land now they're exiles Moses is about law and they ignored it David was about lineage they had awful kings now we get the new one about love these covenants aren't void but they're shown here to be completely and utterly ignored oh and then Jerusalem is destroyed chapter 39 there's a vision of the figs coming true Zedekiah is killed and it's reprise dat the end of the book for dramatic effect jeremiah is taken to Egypt with Baruch his scribe in chapter 43 chapters 46 through 51 contain a massive amount of judgment on nearby countries just like in Isaiah Egypt the perennial enemy until they're redeemed by the Lord Philistia the people of Goliath Moab the descendants of lot Ammon Edom Damascus kadar haze or Elam and Babylon the part about Babylon is way longer than any of the other ones it's a hundred and ten verses there the mechanism and device of God's judgment and now we're finding out that they're gonna be judged it's the day new mah you like that of the epoch which is just a fancy literary word for saying the narrative pieces are being clearly settled chapter 52 is the story of the kingship and fall of Zedekiah recounted it's the same story that's found at the end of second Kings almost word-for-word it's a picture of what we're waiting for all through the book Seneca is warned by Jeremiah but he doesn't listen then he's destroyed and his family and his eyes are gouged out like Samson he's the evil anti King while we wait for the true king the one who reigns with peace and justice Jesus Christ the last few verses are a little arrow in that direction aheh can the former king is released from prison and exile and he sits with the kings of Babylon and eats that's how the book ends it's like what it's kind of weird until you figure out what Jeremiah's going for Joe koyukon is listed in the lineage of Jesus in Matthew 1 they spell his name differently he's called Jack and ayah there but it's the same person he's the father of the true king the end of the book ends with that promise the king is coming now I know that the prophets can be confusing I know that they're cyclical rather than linear but stick with it read it it's worth it takes a lot longer to understand than the book of Genesis or the Book of Psalms but it's worth it there are pictures of the broken covenant and the redemption coming through Jesus the message of all the prophets is the same you guys wrecked the covenants but I'm sending a person to fix it if you believe in that person you'll be redeemed it's a part of the narrative of Scripture God created man fell jesus promised Jesus fulfilled Jesus followed Jesus returning and the Bible is God's Word
