hi I'm Jason Ronan and this is one of my favorite RC vehicles of all time the team associated our c10 GT has to be one of the most successful vehicle platforms of all time and the RC racing scene and to kind of start this conversation I think we have to rewind a little bit to when they got this project going in 91 team associated introduced the RC 10 T which was the stadium truck we talked about you know in other videos narrow skinny front tires and you know the wide track suspension the low profile body so many cool things that made the RC 10 t unique but when it came time for the gas truck to be the next emerging class team associated had to kind of go back to the drawing board and incorporate that RC 10 GT with the RC 10 t platform so to start off with we had a cliff let we had Brian Ken Wald at the time Curtis hustings and we also had Roger Curtis who worked on this RC 10 GT platform and what was really kind of cool about this project and that was coming from my era of racing where team associate had already had 20 years of racing experience on gas racing vehicles so eight scale on-road was really a big class for them and with the emergence of the RC 10 the electric vehicles there wasn't as much nitro racing going on and when this class started to boom and I believe Traxxas and a few others had a vehicle that was a gas powered or nitro powered stadium truck the the Traxxas Hawk I believe was was there kind of one of their popular vehicles at the time so she I was taking a look at this class and as it was the story was told to me Jeanne Husting came to one of their meetings they used to have their afternoon Tuesday meetings and he told everybody we're going to build a gas or nitro power stadium truck and according to him everybody looked at him like he was crazy and didn't know you know what he was talking about why would you want to make one of these nitro Stadium trucks and you know he pointed to some of the success he had seen in the market and things that he saw what was going on and people starting to race this class you know there was the this Traxxas Hawk out there know if it was called the Nitro Hawk one of those vehicles that they had and was doing well and then on the racetrack and you can tell when things are starting to boom you start to see these conversion kits and there was a few conversion kits for the RC 10 T one of them was by a main and dungeon there's and there wasn't a similarity between a main then and the a main we have today but the I believe everybody just called it the dungeon conversion kit for the RC 10 T and it was a nice truck but a lot of machine parts things turned backwards to make it work and using other components from vehicles but in a very early event in 1993 team Associated released the guys out to a race in California believe it was the nitro challenge or an event of that magnitude at the time in kin walled actually won the event using this dungeon conversion kit on the RC 10 T and then you could see the project kind of started you could see you know hey what are these guys doing out here racing some 10 scale nitro trucks and then all of a sudden you see kin wall winning this race and it was already you could see his truck wasn't quite a stock of conversion vehicle so you could see already the things were starting to happen and then we get through 1993 you know the kin Wald's the hottest driver kind of on the circuit he wins the world's that year and with an RC 10 and then the big release in that year was at the end of the year was the RC 10 GT so it took him about a year or so to come out to release and finish this project but what she got was a completely race ready truck out of the box and that really wasn't available at the time you know like we talked about there was the Traxxas vehicle out there that was doing doing well in the market but there wasn't really that hardcore race truck like The Associated truck then came the GT so this is the kit box that that I received it looked like this isn't the exact one but in 1993 it was a Christmas a UPS was still delivering and I got this in a shipment from associated and it was the brand-new nitro gas truck so in my experience I had zero gas racing experience I bought a little os-12 engine got some dynamite fuel a glow igniter watched the video that came with the kit was really neat back then was a video came with the with the kit explaining to you how to tune the engine finish and build the truck get it going and that's what I did is I followed the VHS tape ran at Lake Park in Tampa with the with a brand new truck and it was great right away really fun truck and some features about this truck that made it so good which I don't think people really knew at the time but really this truck was was mid motor with the engine being located where it was right behind the fuel tank it was really kind of the first generation of a mid motor platform vehicle they took and this thing had a laydown transmission they took the stealth transmission which they were using in the buggy which was kind of stand up with the motor in the back they turned it around they laid the transmission down and then you know set the engine in place and then they had to come up with a braking system they came up with this little disc brake system ran off the other servo which essentially just pulls on the arm here and activates the brakes and when I was building this in 1993 and all this was very foreign and trying to figure out how to set the linkage but they did a good job in the video showing you how to set the linkage curtis is telling you the the gaps you need to have from throttle to brake and how important the the return spring was and you know maximum pull on the carburetor not to set you know were pulled over and really learned a lot of little things in the video you know in 20 minutes that you had no clue what was going on but that's how we that's how we did it then we got the RC 10 GT running the whole front end is pretty much a whole was just an RC 10 T front end but they remade you know the stamped aluminum chassis to accommodate the the engine the narrower platform had to build the the new gas tank which you know I was told at the time that the gas tank was the most expensive project they ever had and then moving back of course I talked about the transmission being lay down which you know now today we know all the two-wheeled buggy cars have laid down transmissions they put the motor here and we have the battery up here well the gas truck was already doing this back then the only differences they hung the receiver pack in the back off the bumper so they wanted to put a little weight in the back and they went ahead and put that battery back here and truck had no anti squad and the suspension mounts the other two wheel drive buggy and truck had a you know a little bit of anti-squat still had the three degrees of tow in but that was really pretty much it you know some solid engine mounts down on the chassis and they really kind of promoted that the you know all the aluminum on the truck the chassis the motor mounts everything connected to the engine was like a big heat sink so when the engine got hot you know of course it went down through the mounts into the chassis and really kind of was a big heat sink and the truck really had a lot of success I personally won a ton of races with this thing I thought it was you know the best vehicle that they probably had at the time you know when we started driving this thing it worked everywhere and I think one of the reasons was the balance the flexibility of the of the plastics and the platform really worked well on bumpy tracks so I think for sure that you know this is one of the greatest vehicles and platforms and when you look again you know like when we go back and look at some of these other vehicles that have been favorites they're simple and that's what this associate was so get out with their platforms and that day is they would use as many parts as they could from another platform they would make the conversions necessary to make it perform and then they could put the price tag on it that was you know you know really entry-level friendly and I think that was something that that they were good at in those days so starting with obviously with Ken Walden 93 doing the testing running that dungeon truck they come out with their own truck in December of 93 and this truck really started to just take off like like fire I mean this was the most popular vehicle on the market in in the racing scene and it was really tough for a lot of people to understand at first because of this this nitro thing was a little foreign to them they didn't really quite grasp why this was doing so well but you can see how many trucks we have here and all of them kind of represent a little bit of a different generation of this vehicle and it was just so successful that you could see they had to make little changes over time and probably our most original version you know with the stock body on here was the one that when they still had all the all the plastics were still white in color they went right down the line the truck looked pretty much like a RC 10 or an RC 10 T from those days black anodized chassis white suspension parts and it just looked it just looked really immaculate in the pits especially if it was clean he had a clean racing track and then along the line as they started improving in the tenth scale Stadium truck class they started carrying over some of those improvements to the gas truck so change the front shock tower geometry change the rear shock tower geometry a little they eventually went to different a arms which the a arms were a carryover from at this point they they made a generation change to the t2 and those T two arms became arms on the RC 10 GT so you can see all this simplicity of the parts being interchangeable starting to work in their favor again where you make something new or an update now it it comes down the line it can be used in the whole lineup of vehicle something that doesn't happen as much today things are more specific today but I think this this GT was really a good example of that but you know we pick up here which was kind of the probably the second generation or dipping into the third generation of the the GT which was still the aluminum tub chassis and and at this point they went to all the parts now were in the black color which that was a change they made on the t2 and then going into the b2 all the all the plastics and the parts were were now the same color they all went to the black color and was really kind of a big change at the time because of the associated products were so known to look a certain way with the RC ten but you can see here on this GT now this was you know like we said second or third generation using the t2 style arms but still all the other parts are pretty much original to the same release GT now they're just in black so this was you know the the probably the first update to the vehicle and you can see here we got some MIP CBDs on the back of this which you know all the aftermarket company started to hop on this vehicle making things like the CV DS and different items to make the truck work and perform in you know associated would you use those in the kit here and there if they if it was an improvement and in this truck here we have the C V DS on it which was came out really nice so this truck you know was successful just as long as the first one was and then there was another transition when we got to the t2 in the t3 days of of the stadium truck we realized that making the trucks longer the chassis length longer was better and again this is something that probably started with Brian Ken Wald but the the trucks getting longer became a benefit so the next time they went in and redesigned this truck they decided to make a flat aluminum blue chassis and extend the length so that it was on par with like the t3 and the other stadium trucks that were on the market so in in and in this time the truck maintained its undefeated streak on in the Roar Nationals so they had the 10 scale gas truck roar Nationals and the truck was undefeated and during this time all these little upgrades were being made to the truck the competition was starting to come out TL our our team low C at the time released some great trucks like the GTX then they had the the next variation of the truck after that you know so they kept staying on it they were there trying to keep up with the GT and they were doing a tremendous job on the 10 scale two-wheel drive a stadium truck front with the LX t the double X and then eventually the double XT which I think probably surpassed the performance of some of the associated vehicles like Darcy 10 and the RC 10 T and some of the others low C had surpassed them there but in this gas truck division in this market this GT was just unbeatable they started saying you still can't beat a GT and for some reason this truck in the hands of Billy Easton Mark Pahlavi tiss and all these guys on a national level and then you know us on a regional level either being in the the Nationals and or you know locally within Georgia Florida all of our region's the truck just one and then we entered Richard Saxon into the equation who became really the gas truck racing expert or maybe the first pro gas nitro racer and really took gas truck to the next level Richard was the hero of this class he's you know we talk about these classic builds the J Hall Z's that cliff let's the Brian Ken wall builds in the associated realm well the the bill to make in gas truck is the Richard Saxon building he was he kind of has that classic paint job him and Regan used to just kill it within this class and did such a good job through all the generations giving the best guys a run for their money and winning his fair share races so going into making that next generation getting that truck longer to compete with everything else that was coming out at the time the parts were still the same for the most part all the plastics the suspension arms the ball cups things that you look at today and you say how did this work how did it last it worked perfectly 45-minute mains the GT was just a terrific platform and one of the first vehicles that associated built as an RTR was the RC 10 GT in the story that the way I was told is genic once again stood up for this gas truck and he told the company at the business meeting they had we're gonna make an r/t our GT and he said everybody once again looked at him like he was crazy but he went through with it made an r/t our GT and from there on out they were in a whole different business you know RTR cars ready to run in the Box radios pre you know pre-built cars and there was a whole different business model then and Jean really kind of kind of spearheaded that moving in with the vehicles so the GT was a big part of the collection for associated maid it's made its way through many different little variations but still maintain that undefeated roar Nationals marched through the through the 90s and then through the early 2000s and we get asked a lot every every day it seems like I'm getting asked why it doesn't gas truck exist anymore if it was such a great class then why doesn't it exist today and I think the main reason is the track styles once eighth scale became one of the major classes they started making the tracks cater to eighth scale buggies so the tracks got bigger the jumps got bigger the terrain became rougher and really kind of eliminated gas truck from being very fun on the track so the bigger and nastier they made the tracks the more that it kind of shuffled the gas trucks out of the mix and I think that's why they're kind of extinct today the ideal track for these vehicles is kind of the outdoor backyard tracks tracks that are made for 10 scale off-road two-wheel and stadium truck are perfect for - truck you add a pit lane and those were the perfect the perfect locations you know 3045 minute mains we ran a lot of 30-minute mains we get into national events we'd run 45-minute mains and that's where the truck really excelled and the reason it's probably not around today is there's more indoor tracks for 10 scale cars in all the outdoor tracks are mostly eighth scale style tracks so really it we eliminated the track that they could be raced on the sky not minimizing the class so people asked could it ever come back I think it would it could come back but what would have to happen is the tracks would have to be different we'd have to start with the backyard tracks again making them you know 10 scale and size and friendly and the gas truck the companies would have to get on board make a new updated truck that has all the latest advancements in terms of suspension really durability and just throw that os-12 engine back in there and I think we would be booming again with ten skill but I think that's the steps the the tracks backyard tracks the size the obstacles would all have to be ten scaled friendly and then the manufacturer jumped in with a couple vehicles to make it you know interesting again so one of our recent projects kind of preparation for this video was we worked on a kind of our own version of an updated RC 10 GT just making kind of coming up with these different little concepts making things look cool and look different got together again with Jason Santos who helped us build and prepare kind of our her new RC 10 GT so we did as we you know there's so many blue chassis there's so many black chassis vehicles out there that we went with we decided to anodized this thing red we use as many of the original looking parts as possible and you know we gotten into some of the details things that I wish I had when I raced it which was like the receiver box that was sealed we went ahead and does I designed one of those we 3d printed it put it inside the truck we went through and we found the the old square OS engine head for this that was also red matched up in the in the engine department and we went with the heavier duty ball cooks and ball ends that are more durable today and we threw some current J consoles tires on it and we were also able to outfit it with our re-release of the original team associated version to body so along those lines every time they updated this truck seems like the the body went through a little bit of an update I went from the original a little more chiseled look to got softer and body lines a little more friendly for durability you know there was some length adjustments over time too but we went with that body style gastric body to and from the 1996 year and kind of Jason got this thing built and just looks tremendous we just love the way this thing looks and I think it really kind of captures that that era and really looks like something we'd want to race today with all the the latest advancements so the RC 10 GT definitely one of our favorite vehicles of all time here one for me for sure got a lot of victories with that truck and as we said it was an undefeated vehicle on the roar national racing scene and we really appreciate everybody joining us here for another episode in the J concepts garage and we'll see you next time all right one thing I wanted to make sure to talk about was Jared Tebow his excellence with the RC 10 GT now he want more roar national titles than anybody else but it took place really at the end of the 90s and early 2000s so the majority of this video has to do with the 90s generation and the release of the truck and the success but he really took control this truck late 90s early 2000s but he won more titles than anybody with RC ten GT and then later the gt2 which is a totally truck totally different truck all together so what we got here is hopefully a video with Jared talking about the RC 10 GT and all the success with it and one make sure to point that out is how successful he was with that trouble all right Jared Tebow here I'm gonna talk about one of my all-time favorite cars the team associated RC tan GT I actually have one of my old trucks here this trucks really cool special to me because this was the first car that I got just my first RC car in general it's pretty much for launch my career I mean the racing my first RC car everything like that so just one of the say couple things about the car about the class go back to when I started my first car was a GT we bought a used one from a hobby shop in Bakersfield California my dad and I and it was super ugly it was like neon yellow orange fade paint job something like that it was the tub chassis so this truck is a little bit newer version of the GT whereas the flat chassis I don't have a tub chassis truck anymore there was just a really cool class it was a class that you would drive outside a good stepping stone to get into the nitro power classes it was when I started actually bigger than the 1/8 scale which you know now anything natural powered is 1/8 scale gas trucks trying to make a little bit of a comeback which is which is really cool you know I'll kind of go over a couple things well I think the class kind of faded out so when I got into it it was in 1999 class was booming new trucks were being made a brand new low C truck came out in 2000 in 2006 associate came out with a new truck the gt2 Kyosho and Mugen also had some trucks during that time and the class pretty much died in 2008 that was the last year the raw national I was lucky enough to win five in a row oh four oh five OH six oh seven and Oh 8 the very last one so that was really cool gas truck was kind of my class was just a really fun technical challenging class to drive he had to drive if you wanted to go really fast and do all the big jumps and stuff you had to drive with your clutch setup pretty aggressive your slipper pretty aggressive and house and also a lot of brakes I never ran any drag brake or anything so it was just a lot of push brake and so you really just learned some technical driving things because the the truck was just you know challenging to drive when you had it set up to go really fast so that was always really cool um I enjoyed it for my motocross background it was just really fun to throw the truck around you could you know moved around the air a little bit when he had a lot of brakes you could power slide it you can blast berms and things with it being two-wheel drive and that stuff was you know funner than a Ford drive car the way you could break it set it up into the corners picks the car around just a really really fun class the GT is just an iconic truck in that class hoping to see gas trucks come back some people are trying to make it come back it's a little bit challenging to the track so I'm gnarlier now a little bit bigger but hopefully this will encourage some people to have some smaller tracks which I think will bring back the outdoor race in a smaller tracks are easier to mean easier to work on you need less turn marshals so I think having smaller outdoor tracks will actually bring back the outdoor scene and I think bringing back gastric would maybe even allow some people that can't afford to race 1/8 scale be able to race outdoor with a nitro class and just to have fun I think it'd brighten up your RC experience and they're just super fun so yeah we'll throw back to the RC 10 GT you
