Jacob-Rees Mogg in South Shields - painting the town blue?

the conservative party has always been a national party the most successful political force the world's ever known but South Shields which became a constituency In 1832 as in the time since there never returned a conservative and what I want to try and find out is why the conservatives aren't appealing in this part of the world and whether there is a right-wing vote out there do you think you're the right person to appeal to the north well my aim is to appeal to the V of Northeast Somerset that's where my elector is no but you're going to campaign there now so you must yeah yeah of course we're a national party there shouldn't be noo areas for the Tories we should go and try and find every vote we possibly can and no noo areas for you of course not I love canvasing once I get started it it's um like swimming that um as you get into water you think it's a bit cold but once you get going if you like swimming it's great pleasure the worst reaction I had was with a friend of mine who'd come to help me canvas in central 5 and she knocked on a gentleman's door and the dog came out and uh she went to Pat the dog the householder came out and shouted as his dog not at her don't get anywhere near her she's a Tor and that's worth an AIDS we'll see whether we get um brick bats or plaudits as we go would you have 30 seconds to speak to us I'm with channel 4 news but I'm also a conservative Member of Parliament I'm Jacob re I'm a conservative MP no no are are you a labor man no no are you a conservative yes well sir thank you so much thank you madam I'm Jacob smog local well I'm not local here I'm a conservative MP down in Somerset well we've only been here a few minutes and the first few people we've spoken to have turned out to be conservatives so we're doing pretty well there clearly is conservative support here it's just a question of winkling it out cor why don't you like the conservatives they destroying everything about mag such a start new definition this country will end up with a rebellion R it's going to go that way and is there any particular reason that you've you support Labor uh just out of the Working Man really you know they've always been For the Working Man in the Northeast uh more than what the conservatives has in the other parties you know I am going to buy some sweets cuz I got a very sweet tooth but I'm here I'm here with channel 4 news I think lab is more For the Working Class People and conser are more for the people that's already up there it's been a lack of Interest by the conserv and how do you think we could do better you can't people are too ingrained in up in the Northeast to vote anything else other than near but it is a generation thing conservative Member of Parliament have you very conservative in the past sucked a lot of them gone okay gone well I hope you'll let me carry on but other than that great all these MPS now they're just living off the tax pay Mone man we need to cut taxes you're absolutely right oh go on you'll be Stars you probably are already Stars it will be television it's it's about um voting and um South Shield's um support for labor when yeah I like labor you like labor and why do you like labor oh okay that's a blunt answer and and are there are there any issues you're concerned about um everything what affects you wasn't it D Coming who did the what you call them bedroom TS and then and things like that yeah because my mom's got four kids and when they're like one Le at school they're going to get fine 60 because of him everything's going to be right it's great to be with the local South Shields conservatives because I cannot tell you how much I admire you for what you do in an area where conservatives haven't done well historically we're perceived to be anti-working class the conservative party and we we're blamed for closing the minds we're blamed for closing the heavy industry the ship how many members are there we've got about 50 uh most of which have been uh members for for many years of course that may be partly our fault we haven't much to offer them here it is so inspiring to meet people who battle away for conservatism against all the odds and there may only be 50 members but there's a core of people here willing to put across a Tor message and what I'm finding when I've spoken to people is that Tory values appeal so there was ultimately a prospect that even in South Shields the Tories could do well if this was representative the association spit long in the tooth do you think so I thought I was with the young conservatives I delighted by the youthfulness of their members well so far it's been great we've just met Tes so now we're going into this club and we're going to see if we can find some copper bottom socialists got to look after the are people the children are starving now and they are starving there's no doubt about there people committing suicide because I can't manage it's not on there no work for anybody and I feel hardly sorry for the band that's coming up now since the Clos the pit in 92 westo pit this is when this town died and who do you support which party was Li all my life and then recently it's been ukip ukip I'll chatter for a bit just to explain who I am um I'm Jacob reog I'm a conservative Member of Parliament and I know don't Boo too loudly thank you very much you might win and then you'll want to Cher me it's 89 it's just one above Two Fat Ladies 89 oh but but there are only thin ladies in here so I didn't think anyone would mind it's 5 and two or if you like Danny laroo 52 I'm allowed to say that I hope two little ducks two and two 22 quack quack there you are you see did you ever think you get an MP coming here and saying quack quack one and six Never Been Kissed 16 there are Tory MPS who've Never Been Kissed I assure you oh no this is um where David lives it's David's Den number 10 thank you and before I go I've got one final question for you is there a conservative other than me in this room no yes oh we've got one or two thank you thank you very much and another so so I'm glad to say that that there's hope for me yet maybe tomorrow I'll find what I'm after it's been a great day but we haven't painted South Shields Blue South Shields is undoubtedly tribally labor and that will take a long time to change that doesn't mean it's not worth trying to change and putting a right-wing message across as the labor party replaced the Liberals here as the Liberals replaced the wigs so perhaps ultimately the Tories could replace the labor party cloud in those
