so somewhere about a year ago my friend Daniel actually came over and it was basically like any other Tuesday he was off work and he wanted to know if I wanted to jam or potentially make a video for my Channel or for his and I was basically like yeah let's do it that sounds awesome now as far as I could tell everything was pretty much normal he walked in the room he looked on the wall grabbed the first guitar that he could find sat on the couch and started shredding Stevie rayon licks it made me super jealous cuz I can't play that fast and as he's sitting there playing these licks he looks up at me and he says mike enough of this acoustic can we actually plug this thing in and I was like why not I got a couple amps lying around but that's what I actually got a little scared because this friend in specific has some very very particular takes on gear and he would tell you that himself I mean it when I say this is my most particular friend when it comes to amps and specific guitar sounds I've showed him my newest thousand tube amp before and he's been like this amp is straight booty to him because he wants a very particular sound nothing wrong with that the man just knows what guitar sounds he likes so as I'm sitting there I'm just waiting for him to tell me that the guitar the amp sound could never live up to his expectations but right as he's in the chair he rolls the volume down he turns to me he looks up and he says this guitar has no right sounding this good I think I even like it more than your S2 so in case you were wondering the guitar that he was talking about was actually well this one it's my SE Mardi 594 it's a guitar that I had gotten a couple months prior and I didn't really know what to expect of it when I first took it out of the box now this wasn't my first ever Rodeo when it came to Paul Reed Smith guitars over 5 years prior when I had been living in my college dorm room I actually owned an SE Custom 24 that I really loved and my friends really loved but once I got to this place and people started really freaking out about my SC Mardi 594 I started noticing that difference instantly and it would just happen so often and not just with Daniel it was like clockwork anytime a guitar player would come into this room the first thing cuz it was the one on my wall they would pick up was that guitar they would come down they would sit down on the couch and they would be like oh my goodness PRS the way they're making these S2s is so great and I would be like dude that's not the S2 that's actually the SE and they would be like no way that's what and the more I started noticing this the more I started playing this guitar the more I started realizing I was going to have to do my research on what was making these SE guitars sound so good now for all intensive purposes what I found probably won't shock you because unsurprisingly it had a lot to do with the specs and I'm not necessarily talking about these things were changing really really quickly and what I was noticing was that PRS was actually putting the same pickups from their S2 models into their SE guitars and the more I looked I noticed that this wasn't really just happening with the newer models that had just come out like the scgt and well this guy right here it was actually happening with some of the older more mainstream models like the SE custom 24s and all of that information would actually prompt a question that would fundamentally change the way I looked at PRS guitars and that question was what's even the point anymore I mean I know there's more to guitars than just pickups but if these two guitars have the same woods they have the same pickups outside the general SE on the headstock and the bevel curve which I really like and I am a guitar player who consistently admits that looks do matter but why would anyone choose the S2 over the SE like really I mean even when it comes to looks when my friends would come in here and play this they would consistently tell me that this finish looks better than the one on my S2 in their opinion which I vehemently disagreed with because even though I like this guitar a lot if I could go back I would definitively change the black cold burst I think that one looks unbelievable so day in day out I'm playing this guitar I'm practicing with it I'm talking about it with friends I'm using it in videos and a different question actually Pops in my mind more brutal one which is is PRS just going to cut out the middleman like it's never fun cutting the kid from the basketball team I know cuz I was that kid I mean what's even the point of the S2 line if the Gap is so quickly closing between these guys right here and some of their like really highlevel instruments but just as I was losing my mind about an entire line of guitars well I got word I mean I've heard rumors around the Great F of different guitars coming out and I think we all have I mean I specifically remember the first rumors and pictures that started circulating around the SE silver sky and thinking to myself I can finally maybe get my hands on one but this was a bit different than just a new line of guitars this was word of something that could quite potentially be really really big so real quick I want to show you so this friends is the prss2 custom 248 yes very long name but I do think in a lot of ways this could be a game changer for the S2 line as a whole and I know exactly what you're thinking to yourself Mike the custom 248 and specifically the custom 24s have been out for years and years and years so why would you ever give it that Oso coveted title of potential Game Changer well you got to hear me out on this this thing right here is very different from any of the other S2 models that have come before it and here's why unlike the S2 models that have come out in previous years this guitar right here has the same exact pickups as the ones in the core models the same exact TCI Huer S as the almost $5,000 core model I didn't really know what to think about that when I first heard about it but brought me all the way back to when I was playing my SE and wondering about the big questions of how much is this Gap really closed is this thing really going to be the Juggernaut that I know they're going to claim it's going to be and much like with the scgt and the SC mccardy 594 last year I think it's time we find [Music] out [Music] okay so with the Custom 24 being probably ps's most played and most known model I often wondered what the difference actually was between the regular Custom 24 and the 2408 even when I had owned one I thought initially that the 08 was referring to the number of strings and that this was an eight string guitar that was meant for like really heavy metal players who wanted a really low-end base string but the more I researched I found out it was actually a lot simpler than that it's basically a more versatile way to split each humbucker individually and the eight refers to the fact that you have eight different combinations now while historically I have really like the coil tones coming out of prss with few exceptions like the scgt I've mostly treated as more of a nice add on rather than like a main function of the guitar especially once I started to go higher gain into the tone pool I thought for sure I was going to be using the humbucker but the more I started to play the coil split and really realize what they sounded like especially at a little bit of higher game I think I realized what makes these core model pickups so special and why someone would want a 248 as opposed to a custom [Music] 24 [Music] here's essentially what I'm feeling I know I've only played PRS core models a handful of times they're usually locked up at the guitar stores and they're may have just been once or twice where I was lucky enough to have friends with those really expensive guitars who've let me just for a couple minutes pluck it during a jam and really feel what it was like now with all that being said the expectation was a little bit different going into this all I had really remembered was the demos online that I had seen in Word of Mouth and to be completely honest all I can say is just wow I think with the core models being essentially Paul Reed Smith's custom shop it's a really big move putting those pickups into the S2 line just like like it was a really big move putting the S2 pickups into the SE line guitar it's almost like you're creating a whole different type of standard and it goes way deeper than just PRS but I think it goes into the idea of guitars that punch way above their weight class which is a term that I'm sure every Gearhead is used at one point or another in one way shape or fashion it's something outside of the general sound and the looks that I know can really set a guitar apart and can help someone make a connection with a guitar or even a line of guitars I think a lot of it is knowing that you're going to take a guitar to a jam or a gig or just a setting with a lot of different guitar players and they're going to see a guitar or they're going to see something on the headstock and they're going to make an immediate assumption about the tone I mean I've done it I'm guilty of it like you've heard an S2 or you've heard an SE and you think you know in your head what it's supposed to sound like or what it usually sounds like then you hear it like you really hear it and you instantly just go somebody tell me somebody tell me right now what is different what is different about that guitar and I think with the new pickups in this one I think it has the potential to have that feeling to have that effect and it really does get me wondering if this is what they're doing with the S2 line what in the world is coming up next for the core models like are they going to be upgrading the pickups are they going to be upgrading the woods I think the possibilities are essentially endless and that's going to be a really cool thing to see but I don't think it matters what I think about the possibilities what matters it what you think so please let me know do you like the S2 models are you a person that sticks to the core models are you a person that thinks they're no better than the sc's I want to know exactly what you think so please let me know in the comments anyways thank you so much for watching this video it was so much fun to be able to check out the new S2 models I mean this thing is a literal beast and I love being able to see it especially since I had no clue and I was completely wrong about what the 08 in custom 2408 meant and I had also own very briefly an S2 Custom 24 but that's another story for another day but if you want to know anything more about this guitar the links are in the description make sure to check it out it's one of the best ways to support the channel if that's something you want to do or if you're just curious about any of the other gear that I use in this video like the supr amp make sure to check out those links like And subscribe if you had a good time and most importantly like most important of all have a fantastic
