was calling y'all out about not having anything to wear like you definitely have stuff to wear one of the top comments was i'd love to see a how to layer video and so i figured with halloween just around the corner thanksgiving just around the corner christmas it's getting colder so layering is definitely the tip top priority in all of our minds and so i figured i put together a video of how to dress warm and cute at the same time because those things are not mutually exclusive let me give you some tips up my sleeve on how to layer without necessarily absolutely bundle yourself up into the thickest goose down jacket you own that's not the only way that you cannot freeze to death i promise you this video would not have been possible without today's sponsor which is princess paulie everything that i'm using in this video is from princess paulie head to toe they ship from within the united states and for any orders over 50 they offer free express shipping of three to four days description without further ado let's get into it tip number one is alternating color blocks using your coats now that sounds really weird and abstract let me break it down for you oftentimes what makes winter and fall fashion layering so difficult is that we know how to dress ourselves cute on the under layer like shirt top pants shoes but the coat that we need to keep warm and not dye is what we put on over everything and oftentimes if we don't have the proper coat that is the cherry on top it kind of just covers up your whole fit and like doesn't let you show it off to the public when you're walking to places and so in order to prevent your coat from absolutely covering up your outfit rather becoming another accent piece that accentuates and elevates it is to use alternating color blocks the key here is to make sure that your coat matches with one other piece in your under layer outfit so that your coat is immediately tied into that color scheme so let me show you an example in the skeleton under layer outfit the statement piece is the brown snake print pants that you see here with this gorgeous leathery sheen and this rustic brown tone throughout and i made sure to pair that with these black boots as well as this black jumper on top and so you already see that there is an alternating color pattern and the statement piece here are these brown pants now what you don't want to do here is just throw on like a navy canada goose or some white jacket rather you want your coat to channel the tones you're already wearing there's many ways to go about this if you want to go a little bit more intricate and niche you can do an alternate every other color block by throwing on a brown jacket that pretty much accurately matches the tone of the brown pants which i happen to have here i throw in this gorgeous also rustic and leather motorcycle type jacket and i find that the coordination of textures as well as tones really tie in the whole outfit to make sure that the coat doesn't look like that outlier that i was talking about if you just threw on like a white puffer you know what i'm saying but if you don't happen to have the exact shade of brown that is totally fine as well the other tone that is channeled throughout the fit is black and black is much more versatile a lot of us have more black and so if you throw on a streamlined chic black coat like this trench blazer coat that i have here you'll see that this provides an extra layer of contrast it not only expands the background of black to further call attention to the statement piece that is your brown leather pants but it also streamlines and slims you to make sure that your silhouette is not drowned out which is often another problem we run into when we throw on these big bulky coats and those are just two of many ways that you can make sure that the coat ties in to the colors of your outfit already rather than clashing all right now that you have completed level one of being educated on color blocking with coats now i want to go into the different silhouettes of coats because they can make a world of a difference again when it's really cold out our first instinct is to just be like i'm gonna throw on the thickest baddest puffer jacket i own however an important thing to remember is the coat that you do wear will dramatically change the aesthetic and the vibe of your overall fit when you first walk into a room people are going to be seeing your coat so if you just throw on the thickest fattest puffiest puffer you own even if your actual fit is the most chic sophisticated thing ever the first impression that people are going to get is casual because the puffer is the first thing that they see and so you really have to think about what first impression do you want to channel when you walk into a room so to illustrate that better i obviously put together an example for you guys here we're starting off with the skeleton under layer of a white sweatshirt and black leather pants and a quick little side point five tip here is oftentimes what we forget about is the small invisible layers that we can start from the skin a really nice way that i like to insulate without adding too much fabric is tights the friction that they cause in between your pants and your skin actually generates a lot of warmth so tights are a foolproof way and i also like to throw on thin skin type bodysuits like this one underneath my big fat sweaters to also add an extra layer of insulation and that often deters me from needing to throw on my thickest coat with that being said moving up from the base layer of the tights and the jumpsuit i am channeling this super comfy jumper which i have been eyeing for so long i absolutely love the olive green text and the whimsical font i'm such a stickler for fonts and i paired it with these very very flattering leather pants but depending on what shoes and coat you pair it with look how crazy the vibes change in alternate universe number one i threw on these chunky platform sneakers they add like three inches to my high i freaking love them and this cropped oversized puffer and immediately just get athleisure youthful comfy college student on her way to freaking sleigh at the library but if you do a complete 180 to alternate universe number two if i just switch out those chunky shoes for these sleek clear delune heels and replace the cropped oversized puffer with a long blazer trench coat look i immediately look like i can walk into any bar and not get id'd and that i have my life together and i have a great credit score there's instantly so much more chicness and sophistication none of those aesthetics are necessarily better than the other but just think about what vibe do you want to portray and making sure you curate your outerwear to that identity that you want to convey the next tip that i want to tell you guys is that the length of your coat deserves a lot of attention especially when you're wearing things like dresses or skirts because for all my friends who refuse to give up dresses and skirts during the cold months as much as we love them they are often painful to style with the cold as well as pairing them with coats so my foolproof rule is when you are wearing things that are long and wide like this brown maxi skirt that gives me such good pilgrim vibes drenched in autumn and pumpkin juice but it does tend to engulf my entire frame in those situations i would recommend opting for cropped and oversized top outerwear that call more attention and balance out the top of your frame so that there's still an illusion of an hourglass figure and your finger isn't completely lost you can see how i do that here by throwing on this cropped oversized puffer jacket it matches with my tights and my boots on the bottoms which is always helpful its crops nature immediately preserves my waistline to be at the same level as my skirt now in comparison if i threw on something like that gorgeous brown leather jacket from before although the colors streamline together very well the longer length covers up the waistline established by the skirt so you can't even tell that it's high-waisted and therefore the silhouette that you're immediately seeing is more boxy and rectangular in that way the length of your coat as well as the contrast with the different color schemes is very important to keep in mind the next tip that i want to highlight is that even with monochromatic fits don't think that just because your entire fit is one color you can throw on absolutely any jacket it's not that simple it's not that simple what you have to pay attention to the silhouette still and i figure i'll just show you rather than tell you we're starting off with this head to toe all black fit we have this tight jumpsuit black tights underneath for that extra layer of insulation and these sleek slim fitting leather pants on top with black boots to finish off the whole look now if you throw on something like this oversized black puffer even though it is black overly accentuates the top area and makes the silhouette from a more balanced hourglass to an upside down triangle now if this puffer coat is not the otp the one true pairing for this black fit what is i highly recommend continuing to channel that sleek and streamlined aesthetic by throwing on something like this elongating laser coat because this fabric doesn't go too far out from your body it maintains and continues to elevate that look that you have already established from the very bottom layers and this shows a really great example of how this black puffer coat was the very reason why we're able to channel that balanced hourglass illusion with that brown maxi skirt however when we pair it here with the super bodycon all black fit it does the exact opposite and so all that to say no piece is good or bad no piece is ugly every piece has utility depending on its overall chemistry and compatibility with the rest of your fit and so i'm trying to curate your eye of how to see that better when you're pairing these different coats with each other move over hot girl summer it's time for hotner fall it's time for christian girl autumn it's time for shoving pumpkin spice lattes down our throats i really hope that today's video was helpful for you guys helpful helpful before i get any comments saying like this is not true winter like blizzard girl i live in new england i know let me know if you guys want a winter edition of this this was definitely a more fall centric one but for now let's enjoy and
