it get it get it girl all we wanted to do was add some new chicks to our flock of chickens but a predator in the middle of the night almost threw in everything in case you didn't know almost any animal will try to eat a chicken including other chickens now we dealt with this earlier this year when Hawks were killing our chickens [Music] I think we solved that problem for the most part when we added this large run I went to our Coop and we only let the chickens free range in the evenings for now now that seemed to solve our Predator problems but did it did it really no no it didn't let me spin you a yarn we have this one Bantam chicken named Echo and she is probably above all the other chickens our favorite chicken she loves to go broody and she has successfully hatched and raised chicks before she's the friendliest chicken we have and I mean we've had other chickens that have been friendly but they quit being friendly after a while I don't know we have this one that's super friendly and anyway anyway I digress we think she made me from the coaching line of chickens but you know when you see her you can let me know what you think anywho she recently went Broody and Kim let her sit on a few eggs because we like to add a few chickens to the flock every so often and by the way that is the simplest way to add chickens to your flock it's like getting your money for nothing and your chicks for free foreign what's going on here girl here's one nope you can't have that one so Echo successfully hatched one of her eggs well not one of her eggs but one of the bigger chicken's eggs anyway roll that beautiful chick footage he finally did it she had her baby [Music] oh dropped it when the chicks are a few days old Kim likes to put the mama hen and the chick or chicks whatever in their own run that lets them relax and get food without harassment from the other chickens and we had this little run Kim bought a while back to do that with the chick can actually fit through the bars but she won't leave her mama she basically sticks right around but it keeps the Predators out or so we thought and that brings us to the night of Terror Kim and I were in the living room about 10 30 when we heard the chickens making like crazy noises like I'd never heard before now this is weird because they've never made noise at night and they're all locked up and safe we figured they were in some type of chicken scuffle you know when we got out there though Echo was just running around in circles basically screaming if a chicken can scream and trying to get out of the little run we were just like you know what's going on then we saw the chick was gone yeah I looked under the bushes near the run to see if she'd gone in them but instead I found a very upset possum now I didn't think to video this because it was just so spur of the moment and we have yet to get acclimated to the fact that when something terrible happens you're supposed to grab your phone and film it first thing he was he was just like maybe not that no that's not it I joke now but you could see where he pulled the chick through the bars because they were spread and had feathers stuck to them and on the ground [Applause] [Music] so I mean we were we were just heartbroken for Echo because although some people may say you can't you know you can see how happy she is when she has babies so Kim picked her up to put her in the main run and I'm looking for the possum who has now run into the bushes as I'm doing that Kim starts hollering oh oh grab her grab her I thought Echo got away from her but no it's the chick Kim saw this little yellow Flash run past her out of the woods and she's running right for the little Coop by the bushes buy the possum and I'm trying to grab her and she's she's hopping and she's bobbing and weaving and right at the last second I grabbed her and it was like this epic moment I wish we had got it on video to this relief of knowing that she was still alive so Kim took them both inside to check them out and make sure that they were okay Kim saw where Echo had missing tail feathers but no injuries and that's when we realized what really happened apparently Echo and the chick were sleeping against the back of the little run when the possum and he just snuck up on him and tried to bite or grab echo through the bars it was Echoes feathers on the bent bars not the chicks so while that's happening the chick ran for his life through the bars into the woods 20 feet away on the other side of the big Coop where it had never been before to get away only after all that commotion was over and Kim had Echo did the chick feel it was safe enough to run back out after all that we put Echo and her Miracle check back in the Big Run for the night and we let storm and Havoc out to see if the possum was still around foreign [Music] I don't know why I gave her a man's voice rabbits are okay that stuff is let's see these are bigger too oh yeah they're way softer okay we're just checking out here here and how the baby and Echo are this morning it's too early [Music] the babies on top of us [Music] we're making another home Mama Kim has these I don't know what you call them cages I guess or on her raised beds out here that she bought because they were just saying but she's only put one together so far the other two we still haven't put together so we're gonna seize that moment and see if we can connect the two to put them in the coop to protect mama and her chick thing well once you get one side it kind of helps keep it together so if you need to put aside together right let me do it you do the hard ones I'll do these easy ones for him there's instructions over there I just looked at them [Music] zip ties if you don't have them get some these are like the handiest thing in the world to have okay let's go some beat up snap this little guy out this is a Viber on him too make sure no chickens get out okay look at that fine my little thing is huge what she's saying I'm ready I'm ready yeah the slab so easy access typically for your flowers but in this case to our chickens no that's not you'll have food just go pick around bungee straps don't keep it on there just run some across the pot yeah sounds good was cute now it's Bruce Bruce um I know what a jerk he needs to get his chicken we need to get his chicken legs bruises are adopted black vulture that Jim has been taking care of I guess he got hit out on the road somewhere says a broken wing and a broken leg it's kind of hobbles and you can't fly you can fly like a chicken so Kim's been throwing food to him and for like a month now or more yeah he's our baby he has the fountain out front so he knows he can go get water out front and uh so he sticks around here kind of throw was that you feel like right there he's over there stupid cat bird he doesn't really seem bothered by it oh thanks I'm not trying to kill it I promise it's adorable okay calm down come on Mama [Music] it's okay I don't know a little side note you put the date and put an x on them so nobody takes these eggs from the mother and I don't think these are gonna hatch I think these are done okay so she gets the her little nest and the diatomaceous earth yeah yeah she needs that so she didn't get mice or something [Music] if you want to know more about keeping chickens watch this video right here you'll be glad you did thanks for watching guys I'll see you next time
