there's no easy way to say this the g-force RTX 3070 is dead it is no more deceased departed delicately shoved from this Mortal coil with the Radeon cards of the same generation already dancing on its grave and the RTX 4070 ready and willing to replace it those of us who own this former mid-range Beast should drink to its memory remember the good times and consider what could have been if not for its um shortcomings as someone who uses their channel to preach the second-hand gospel it would have been hypocritical of me to recommend a graphics card from the much maligned scalper pandemic generation not that I haven't tried to do it before but usually without much success I guess the algorithm can sniff out a champagne socialist well now that the RTX 3070 is a previous generation product I can finally talk openly about my personal GPU the RTX 37d had a troubled childhood it released in 2020 at the beginning of the biggest component shortage in living memory which in turn came as a result of the biggest Global Health crisis in living memory its hypothetical launch price was 499 US dollars or about 450 pounds and as a card which promised RTX 2080 TI levels of performance with a small drop in vram it looked like being a stunning value of course as we all know that's not how it worked out stock was immediately snapped up as soon as it went live there were Shady backroom deals with crypto Miners and as a result the few RTX 3070s that ever hit the market seldom sold for less than a 200 markup I consider myself very lucky I had the chance to pick up this open box gigabyte OC 3070 for 650 pounds in 2021 yes this was a scalped price but only about half what one would usually expect to pay at the time plus I think I finally came to the conclusion that I wasn't likely gonna get the 3080 I'd been lusting after for anywhere close to the MSRP and I should just get the next best thing that's next best thing then has been a staple of my channel for the last few months as I used it for my CPU reviews usually in conjunction with dlss upscaling to make sure the GPU wasn't the bottleneck as as if a mighty RTX 3070 that cost me all that money could ever be a bottleneck yeah well lately the world of PC gaming is getting a little less comfortable for ampere series gpus The Prophecy times of eight gigabytes being too little for running the latest games at high settings has come earlier than expected and there are reasonable questions to be asked about this card's longevity to try and answer them my test platform is a mid-range setup I call the moderately priced gaming PC as the core of this test rig is a ryzen 5 5600x it's not too hard for this CPU to become the limiting factor to mitigate this somewhat I'll be limiting my testing to 1440 only adding dlss when absolutely necessary the mpg PCU is also equipped with four eight gigabyte sticks of ddr4 3600cl16 and a b550 motherboard allowing for Gen 4 PCI Express [Music] kicking off with the Troublemaker itself this is my first experience with The Last of Us 1.0.2.0 patch Jesus guys can one of you learn how decimal places work this hotvix claims to have resolved some issues with how vram is estimated according to the settings menu High settings is over the line at 1440 and medium is borderline I run through this densely overgrown area at medium averages a quite Pleasant 72 FPS on average only dipping slightly below 60 at the low end however medium does look a touch mediocre increasing to high maintains a roughly 60 FPS average with drops below 50. both runs suffered slight spikes when loading new data but in general the frame time graph looks pretty smooth enabling dlss quality as high settings still doesn't bring the vram usage under control but it does give an extra 10 on average yes it doesn't do anything for the one percents turning up to ultra things get messy this is what you might have seen in other videos recently where the 8 gigabytes of vram is completely overwhelmed averages in the 40s should be perfectly healthy and playable at least in a non-competitive title but the lack of vram annihilates the frame dimes and makes for a pretty unpleasant gameplay experience [Music] for spoken might not be most people's idea of a good game but it still seems people like to see how it performs I was just glad to see it looking better than the last time I tried it on a GTX 1650 sticking with 1440 as my resolution of choice lifting either model or Texture memory above standard would result in exceeding the recommended limits for vram so my first run was at the high preset with those options left on standard averages were just short of 70 FPS but lows did drop slightly below 60. turning up to the ultra high preset without touching model or Texture memory the average drops all the way to 50 FPS and I don't think this is down to vram as the menu seems to think this is still within the 8 gigabyte limit enabling dlss requires using the custom preset so after throwing caution to the wind setting everything to Max including texture and model memory settings I saw almost the same FPS as high without dlss averaging 67.5 FPS and dropping to 53.6 now this is the demo version of the game but it is running patch 1.12 which is the same as the full version still there's a chance that the full game will be more likely to run out of vram when there's more going on so be prepared for these settings to cause problems returning to my happy place for a moment Forza Horizon 5 is a next gen game but one that can scale nicely onto different tiers of Hardware the last major update added the extreme quality preset which enables full-time RT Reflections and the RTX 3070 is more than up to the challenge at 1440 extreme with dlaa enabled the built-in Benchmark saw over 96 FPS on average making for a theoretically smooth experience however I then took her for a spin around the open world on a couple of races within seconds of hitting the road I was given a vram warning and in both the free roam and race gameplay I came across several quite noticeable stutters now I've seen six gigabyte cards Miss Textures in this game and there was nothing quite so dramatic this time but I'd still be inclined to use dlss quality or maybe tweak some settings to keep the vram buffer from overflowing [Music] uh first party Microsoft titles don't always take PC optimization seriously and Halo infinite is a prime example the 3070 is based on ampere which is one of the architectures which performs well in this title so frame rates were pretty solid my test run is an outdoor scene in The Campaign which is far more demanding than indoors if you only play CTF or Team Deathmatch or other smaller scale modes you can expect much higher frame rates more often but in big Team battles and more demanding parts of the campaign you can expect 1440 High to offer a 95 FPS average and 77 FPS one percent lows pushing to ultra is still a possibility though vram becomes a concern during my run I saw an 80 FPS average and 66 FPS lows though if you're in the habit of leaving other apps running in the background you might consider limiting yourself to high [Music] I haven't played far into a play Tower Requiem yet it's named after one of the worst movies in the alien franchise so I'm a bit skeptical of how good it's going to be nevertheless it's a real heavyweight on gpus and warrants a closer look the default settings apply Ultra quality resolution optimization which could be FSR but I couldn't find it on any AMD literature so I'm guessing it's something else at the high preset of the first section of the game has a rocky start before settling in at over 65 FPS on average switching over to dlss Quality has a small impact on sharpness but neither option is ideal as both settings see a small halo around a Messier as you Pan the camera around and the Boost to 90 FPS on average is absolutely worth it [Music] my Benchmark run in Spider-Man remastered sees me diving off Fisk Tower flipping along Broadway climbing Empire State having a look around before diving off and retracing my Spidey steps at 1440 very high this is a pretty Flawless run mod only slightly by the occasional Spike as new data loads in around Times Square even the lookout spot stays above 60 FPS and the average is an impressive 120 enabling RT however brings things plummeting down to earth averages are cut in half and so are one percent lows moment-to-moment gameplay is hanging around the 60 mark But frame time spokes become more frequent for once though this doesn't appear to be the fault of vram the allocation doesn't go past seven gigabytes and actual usage is around six no in this case the 3070s simply lacks processing power meaning the use of dlss is advised chartered 4 is a claimed title from Sony recently ported to PC and raved about for its visuals on release that was nearly seven years ago and the intended Hardware was a PS4 Pro you'd be disappointed if the 3070 couldn't run this game smoothly at Max quality thankfully everything's fine at 1440 Ultra averages passed 90 FPS and loads here to almost 80. I didn't get around to testing 4K but I suspect the 3070 might have enough horsepower perhaps with a drop to high in case the vram becomes an issue foreign God of Wars not quite as easy going as Uncharted despite having a similar backstory at the absolute maximum quality with Reflections turned up above Ultra the game's still only using about six gigabytes of vram but the processing demands are a little more intense averages are around the 80 FPS Mark but one percent lows dropped to just above 60. again I didn't test 4K but owners of UHD displays will probably want to use dlss [Music] I'm usually keen on using presets when benchmarking both for your ease of use and mine but in the case of Resident Evil 4's remake you're probably going to want to fine-tune things a little and here's why at 1440 prioritize Graphics the game speeds along at over 100 FPS even one percent lows are above 90. this is a single player game it doesn't need to be this smooth choosing the RT preset barely affects FPS at all taking five off the average and three from the lows neither mode sees total vram allocation go far above 7 gigabytes and everything runs beautifully not quite beautiful enough for me however to get that silky smooth Kennedy hair I'd be willing to lose a few frames so I gave the max preset a try after dropping the texture quality a notch at default it was asking for over 9 gigabytes of vram and even afterwards the memory indicator was still in the red in gameplay things were pretty smooth averaging in the mid to high 60s most of the time with only occasional drops into the 40s however the game crashed right at the end of The Benchmark run So to avoid that I'd be inclined to suggest 30-70 owners start from Max and tweak settings downwards until the vram indicator turns white I believe Alex at digital Foundry has done an optimized settings guide that might be worth a moment of your time [Music] one of the key identifiers of cyberpunk as a genre is the idea that the future can sometimes suck you get the Aesthetics of progress and advancement but reality for the average person is a far worse experience than those who tried to live that preem lifestyle usually get burned on a completely unrelated tangent cdpr just added their new RT overdrive mode to cyberpunk 2077 for owners of RTX 4000 series gpus this promises utterly realistic path traced lighting sure it's gonna hurt your frames per second but lovelace's dlss3 frame generation should still keep things nice and playable of course that's not the case for the 3070 at 1440 the RT overdrive mode is a bad joke the afterburner readout says 6 FPS but that's just turning my character around on the spot that's not even gameplay quality dlss moves the frame needle up by a fair amount and that balanced it's into the teens but the RT noise reduction becomes very obtrusive the higher you drop the render resolution turning around that noise reduction takes a few seconds to catch up during which time Shadow areas can get ugly can this be playable well sure turning dlss up to ultra performance actually sees a really playable average in the 50s and if you are streaming onto a phone or a small tablet you might not even notice that the detail has been smudged into Oblivion anyway fancy New Path tracing aside both rasterized and RT modes need dropping from Ultra or else the application of dlss to get a really decent frame rate at Ultra the game comes in just shy of 60fps with lows of about 40 enabling dlss quality boosts that by about 20 percent the RT Ultra preset only presents a cinematic 24 FPS and a far from smooth one at that but tlss balanced should see that rise as far as the mid 50s [Music] I misspoke in a previous video when I said The Witcher 3's remaster had been moved to Unreal Engine 5 when in fact that's the coming Witcher 1 remake the fact that the remaster runs on red engine and has had RT functionality pasted over it shouldn't come as a major surprise given what a blow it has on performance at 1440 Ultra without any kind of upscale in the game drives forward at almost 90 FPS even in the packed streets of novograd turning on RT Ultra cuts that average by almost 70 percent only managing a paltry 26 FPS I didn't do a third run with dlss on there's only so many times I can stand to hear the same voice lines being repeated after all but adding balanced dlss appears to send that up into the high 40s [Music] the reality of very long anyway sure 1440 epic with nanite and Lumen look very pretty but it's harder to play this way and I'm not simply talking about frame rates darker Shadows higher contrast and saturation and shifting exposure are just harder on the eyes this is a competitive game for most people anyway for epic it's a tech demo and for owners of high-end gpus it can be a bit of a flex not so much the 3070 without dlss it's a sub 40 FPS experience only brought up to a moderately playable 65 FPS average with the addition of quality dlss at the other end of the 3070 is frankly obscene at 1440 low with epic view distance and 100 scaling the game runs at over 300 FPS and even the slightly more pleasant looking medium only drops to 180. a good time playing war zone 2 anyway it's just not my thing and probably never will be but in this case that's not the fault of the hardware the RTX 37d can run at 2560 by 1440 using the extreme preset one that I didn't even know existed until I did these tests averages exceed 100 FPS which I think most people will find acceptable those who don't can probably drop settings further but as I'm seeing about 35 to 45 CPU utilization you'll probably find that if you want to achieve a 240 FPS experience you'll need something like an x3d chip or a 13th gen I5 or i7 even when dropped to lower quality vram is far from being taxed at 1440 extreme but I think 4K users will need to make a few compromises to quality settings [Music] whilst my proclamation of the 3070s death an exaggeration hyperbolic maybe but not completely wrong everything I've tested here is either less than 12 months old or has seen a substantial visual upgrade in that time this is the way things are going to proceed for the gaming industry now that developers are feeling more confident about developing games with the 9th gen consoles as a reference point going forwards then the RTX 3070 is going to fall into a weird Niche a graphics card that is absolutely overpowered for medium settings but which stands to become unplayable as high nvidia's strategy of withholding vram in order to incite people to upgrade more often might have backfired this time as Team Green now has two competitors who are far more generous in that area thanks for watching kindly do the usual the YouTube things if you feel so inclined and I'll see you next time [Music] thank you [Music]
