I wish I understood why any hope for a deterministic theory like this pilot wave idea was scrapped for the Copenhagen model. Anyone want to try and explain it to me?
Two things that should be said about this since they weren't mentioned in the video:
This pilot wave theory exactly replicates quantum mechanics because it was designed to do so. More precisely, the position(s) of the particle(s) are at any point in time distributed stochastically exactly identical to how you would predict it from the wave function.
In order for this theory to work, the particles have to "communicate" faster than light. In fact, you can show that if you apply a force on one particle, it will affect another particle even though there is no interaction between them.
Is this less weird than standard quantum mechanics? That's up to you to decide, but it's certainly interesting and worth thinking about.
But... they have also shown that in the double slit experiment, if you place a 'detector' close to the slits to determine which slit the particle went through, the interference pattern disappears. The explanation being that 'observation' of the particle collapses the wave function giving the particle a definite position. This video doesn't explain how the observation of a 'bouncing' particle on a wave removes the interference pattern. So it's interesting, but doesn't account for all of the observations we see in the double slit.
Pretty cool video, but he says that this is not what quantum mechanics looks like, it's just a phenomenon that could ressemble it.
I won't comment on the quantum mechanics, but the video is brilliant at least in that it is straight to the point, not pointless intro. Shows the effect he wants to talk about within the first 5 seconds.
No mention of David Bohm, who developed the pilot wave theory
