[Music] welcome back now those of you that have been following me over the years and i've been covering the electric car scene for about 12 or 13 years now know that i've done plenty of electric car reviews and a lot of electric car charging station reviews but one of the things i have consistently been asked over the years is do i recommend any portable electric car chargers now a lot of people still have concerns with range anxiety and rightfully so people are concerned when they get their first electric vehicle about running out of charge somewhere in an area that maybe isn't the best or safest area and they're concerned about the ability to be able to find public charging stations now we've been getting much much better at infrastructure i know we still have a long way to go and there's still a lot of problems with the current state of eb charging infrastructure but i can tell you this having followed this industry for more than a decade now it is incredibly better than what it was just a few years ago and with the new infrastructure built it's only going to get better but people are still going to have questions and still want some sort of portable electric car charging device for a variety of reasons so we're going to start to take a look at some of those units now here on state of charge those of you that do follow the channel probably have seen a couple videos that i've done recently on spark charge which is a portable electric vehicle charging unit that's really dedicated to electric vehicle charging now what we have here today is something a little different it's the eco flow delta pro portable power bank and among its many uses it can also charge electric cars so we're going to take a look at this guy here today and see if it's something i would recommend for people that have an ev and maybe want the security of having a portable charger with them maybe when they go on long trips probably not something you'd want to carry around all the time but for those instances that make them feel a little bit better they have a little bit of a portable charging power bank available should they need to but first don't forget click that subscribe button and ring the notification bell so you don't miss any upcoming content here on state of charge okay so before we start the review i want to point out the fact that in the corner of this video it says sponsored video that's because ecoflow provided me with the delta pro free of charge for purpose of reviewing but i want to make sure you understand that there was no guarantee this was going to be a good review it could be a terrible review once i get to use it for a while that was no deal with eco flow that i was going to give them a good review but since i did receive the unit for free for purpose of review i wanted to make sure that my followers understood that it is sponsored in that regard now sometimes manufacturers car manufacturers manufacturers for equipment will pay you to do a sponsored review and then the content is expected to be all positive if they're paying you to do it i've been paid anything i've just received this unit and there's no guarantees of anything that i say it's going to be a completely honest review i'll always make sure that my followers completely understand if it's paid content where i have to be positive about the product compared to if i just receive a product and the manufacturer says go ahead and review it whatever you review is your words which is the case here today everything that i do with this video is my true belief and feelings after i've used this for a while okay so before we go into talking about how good it is to charge electric vehicles a portable charging bank for people that have evs i want to go over the other features that the ecoflow has this actually is an incredibly capable unit it does a lot especially how you can integrate it into your home to provide power for emergencies so let's take a look at some of the features and what you can do with the eco flow before we go specifically down the road of eb charging the first thing you need to realize is that the ecoflow delta pro that i have is only one piece of the puzzle in the entire ecosystem of this product yes you could just buy the delta pro that i have and use it for portable power but there's so much more that you can do by adding additional battery banks connecting it to a smart home panel even adding a portable solar array and coupling it with their solar tracker to capture as many rays as possible throughout the day this system can really provide true energy independence the single delta pro unit has 3.6 kilowatt hour of battery storage but by adding additional battery banks you can increase the capacity to up to 25 kilowatt hour a single delta pro unit has a maximum output of 3.6 kilowatt but you can pair it with a second delta pro for up to 7.2 kilowatt of power delivery now that's more than enough to completely power most small to medium sized homes the ecoflow system can be set up to connect directly to your home's electrical service and with the addition of the smart home panel it will provide automatic uninterrupted power in the case of an outage and if you have enough battery storage you can actually use the system to save money on your electricity bill by recharging the battery during off-peak hours and then using the stored energy during peak hours a portable system like the ecoflow needs to have a variety of ways to be able to recharge its batteries because you never know what you'll have access to during an emergency now ecoflow calls the system's recharging technology flow charge and it touts that it will allow you to charge the system anywhere at any time because of the many different ways you can recharge it you can use a regular 120 volt wall outlet you can charge it from a car or a camper with the adapters that are included with the unit you can use the ecoflow smart generator that sold separately you can also charge the system from the 400 watt solar array that sold separately and if you pair that with the solar tracker you can capture up to 30 percent more energy they'll even be a wind energy option soon but that's not available just yet but here's my favorite way you can also use an ev charging station to recharge the system making it the very first portable power system that allows you to recharge the batteries from an ev charging station with the j1772 adapter option you're going to see me test out that in a few minutes and see how well it works ecoflow says it takes 2.7 hours to fully recharge the battery from a standard household outlet i've recharged mine a few times now from completely dead and it was always finished in less than two and a half hours so as i mentioned one of the really cool things about the delta pro is that you can recharge it with an ev charging station now that's a j 1772 equipped eb charging station if you had say a tesla wall connector like i have back here you'd need to use a tesla to j1772 adapter like this one here from tesla tap and then you'd be able to use a tesla wall connector or even a tesla destination charger to recharge the ecoflow but in order to do that you need this here it's the ev extreme adapter that ecoflow sells it's not standard with the delta pro and this is a new item that they just started carrying basically what you do is the lower portion here you plug this into the unit snaps in and then you take your j1772 adapter and plug it in here and hopefully charge the eco flow now i have a variety of charging stations here in the state of charge garage so i plug some of them in to see exactly how well they work so first i plugged in the chargepoint home flex one of the most popular ev charging stations available today it can deliver up to 50 amps and when i plugged it in the unit just kept cycling on and off clicking on clicking off back and forth either the delta pro or the chargeboard home flex was reading some kind of an error and they would not communicate and send power now this is a problem because the chargement home flex is one of the most popular charging stations available today okay so not the end of the world i've got a lot of charging stations in the garage so next up i plugged in the nlx juicebox 32 amp charging station and again all the unit did was beep and after about 10 or 12 seconds i got a bright red error message bar on the juice box meaning that it was not going to deliver power so i figured i'd try one more time and i plugged in the turn on green 32 amp charging station and to my surprise it worked alrighty now the eco flow is fully charged we just completed charging it up 100 i'm now going to plug in my mobile charger and see exactly how long it takes to completely drain the battery as well as how much energy is delivered i just checked the car and it's showing that we're 87 charged and that the driving range is 280 miles once we've completely drained this and it shut off we'll go back inside and take a look and see exactly how much it added along with how long it took now remember we're going to be using the 120 volt adapter for the tesla mobile charger that's because i don't have the proper adapter to charge this on a level 2 or the 240 volt adapter i actually have a adapter that will fit on this but you have to get just the right one in order to make it work a friend of mine who also has a youtube channel ben sullins reviewed this unit a few months ago and he went through this process i didn't realize i wish i had to talk to him first and he tried different adapters he had to get a specific adapter that's made for electric cars you can't just use a regular rv adapter that converts the 30 amp socket to a 50 amp he had to get a specific one i'll actually put the link to that specific adapter if somebody's interested in the description of this video i don't have it so we won't be charging level two we'll be charging level one we'll see exactly how long it takes and how much energy is put in there's another thing i have to add you cannot just plug in a mobile charging cord evsc into this and charge an electric car that's because either the vehicle or the charging equipment will fault because it's not finding ground what you have to do is go out and buy a grounding plug one of these little things here and just plug it into one of the uh 20 amp 120 volt sockets that's going to sort of trick the charging equipment to saying okay yes i found a ground in this uh this thing that's charging me and it's okay to accept juice from it so make sure you pick up one of these if you want to charge your electric car with the eco flow pro so now i'm going to grab the portable charging cable and plug her in and we'll see how long it takes now it should work we're plugged in blue blinking light charging okay now it's a green blinking light so we're charging we'll check back probably sometime in around two hours when we should be completely charged and this guy shut off so the delta pro showed off after exactly two and a half hours of charging i went inside the car to take a look at the display the state of charge rose from 87 percent state of charge to 90 and when i looked at the mileage or the estimated range it jumped from 280 to 292. so 3 state of charge and 12 added miles now the tesla display was saying it took in three kilowatt hour during that charging session but it doesn't show the decimal point so it could be 3.4 or 3.5 i'd imagine after 3.5 it probably rounds up to four i don't know exactly how tesla has it set up but the delta pro is supposed to be able to deliver 3.6 kilowatt hour now i'm sure there's charging losses there always is so it probably took in 3.3 3.4 kilowatt hour and that raised the state of charge from 87 percent to 90 percent and added 12 miles of range and since i had trouble getting the delta pro to charge from my home charging stations i thought it would be important for me to try a public charging station because quite often you might have one of these at a campground or somewhere and you need to charge it back up and you're out in the public so i found a charge point charging station charge point is the largest network of level two charging stations in the country they have the most of these out there so hopefully it doesn't have any type of communication error with this because this is really important that you'd be able to charge this from a level 2 charging station so let's check it out see if it works i have to activate the charging session first it's authorizing now it's letting me charge let's plug this guy in okay it's connected and it's working so that's really good news because as i said chargepoint has the largest network of level 2 chargers in the us and chances are if you needed to charge the delta pro somewhere you probably wouldn't be too far from a charge point charging station so good news happy to see that still don't know exactly why we were having difficulty with the juice box and also the charge point home flex at my house but nonetheless it does work in public and that's a huge positive okay so let's go back to my original question of whether or not the ecoflow delta pro is a good solution for ev owners looking for a portable ev charger that they can take with them in case they need to plug in and get a few extra miles of range on the positive side it can recharge from 120 volts or 240 volts provided you have the right 240 volt adapter which i didn't have when you do use it to charge on 120 volts it takes about two and a half hours to fully deplete the battery if you were charging on 240 volts about an hour and you'd empty the 3.6 kilowatt hour battery that's in the delta pro another positive is there's many ways to recharge this guy we went over that earlier it's not just plugging it into an outlet there's a whole variety of ways you can recharge it so if you're in an area that you don't have access to a plug there's still ways you can recharge it another positive it's also the first portable power bank that lets you recharge it from a j1772 ev charging connector it's the only one out there right now that can just use a regular charging station to recharge it although we had some issues with some of the chargers here i think ecoflow has to work those out i'm sure they will it also recharges really quickly faster than most of these portable power banks now it's not a one-trick pony say like the spark charge which is very good but spark charge was created just for ev charging and it really isn't a consumer product it's made for roadside assistance and uses where companies will come and recharge your vehicle for you it's like charging as a service so that's not consumer facing nobody is really going to buy a spark charge and use it the way that you would use this and another thing is it has a really cool companion app that you can pair with the device that can monitor and control the delta pro you can see what's going on your battery state of charge how much you have left okay so now let's take a look at some of the negatives yes it did charge my tesla model 3 but it took two and a half hours to drain the 3.6 kilowatt hour battery and i only added about 12 miles of range that's really not ideal and as i said we can recharge it from electric fecal charging stations but two of the most popular charging stations the nlx juice box and charge brain home flex wouldn't send power to it it was reading some kind of a fault or had some kind of communication error ecoflow needs to look at that check out all the popular charging stations and make sure that it works because that's a big issue if somebody can't use it and they were planning on using that to recharge it you also have to make sure that potential uh ev owners that want to use this to recharge their ev know that they have to get that grounding plug or it won't work and they need that special adapter to make sure that it can charge at 240 if they want to charge a 240 i mean quite honestly if you did want to use this to charge your ev the level one the 120 volt outlet takes so long you're better off just buying that adapter making sure you can plug in and charge at a higher rate you should be able to empty the battery in only about an hour if you use that as opposed to two and a half hours and one of the biggest negatives is how heavy this is it weighs 99 pounds it's not light enough for most people to carry around it's it's it's really heavy actually struggled a little bit getting it up on this table here because i have a bad back but that's uh i digress in any event most people are not going to find this light enough to pick up and put in their trunk or pick up in the back or put in the back of their pickup truck it's it's a heavy unit and that that's a big negative and maybe the bigger negative is the cost it costs 3 600 and it's not inexpensive and you know all that adds up in my opinion to this not being the ideal portable power bank for electric vehicle owners but the good news is it's much more than just a portable electric car charger it's been said but never verified that albert einstein once said if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its life thinking it's stupid now this is not stupid it's actually a very intelligent power bank and it allows you to completely power job sites campgrounds tailgate parties your whole house if you buy the integrated system if you get additional batteries this thing can power your whole house and you can do it seamlessly it does a lot of things in addition to being able to charge your electric car in a pinch now this is state of charge and we focus on electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging uh and the truth of the matter is this isn't the perfect electric vehicle charger portable electric vehicle charger but it can do it and it can do all those other things so if you are looking for portable power bank and you can afford this the 3600 price tag as i said is not cheap owe it to yourself to take a look at it because it actually is a fantastic device it's wi-fi and bluetooth enabled the app that comes with is actually excellent it really lets you control and monitor everything it's really the complete package so if you're looking for something to do everything definitely check it out but if you're just looking for a portable power bank to recharge your ev this is not the portable power bank that you're looking for well that's it for the review thanks for watching we hope you gave you a little insight into what the ecoflow delta pro is all about please click that subscribe button and ring the
