the new Sonic Frontiers updates have been game changing to say the least from new content patch skips the spin dash and tons more the game feels completely different than when we got it last year even though this update is recent speedrunners have made short work of breaking everything with these new changes while the very obvious change is the spin dash it's not even the biggest change for the speedrun in this update deceleration sliders were added in update too and I don't think they realize what they were doing with this one the new sliders were in response to Fan sentiment of speed being lost out of jumps and momentum in general this slider has made the game feel a lot smoother and faster however it breaks the game as we know it here are some examples of what deceleration does to Sonic Frontiers even before you add spindash into the equation yeah unreal stuff deceleration set to zero makes for a completely different game this nearly looks like a totally revamped physics mod but this is official this change was so broken that the speedrun moderators were forced to split the IL boards into unrestricted and restricted in response it truly is that broken the reason why this slider works so well is because you can reach max speed and jump out of the Boost when deceleration is set to zero you will not lose speed at all while the deceleration was way too much before allowing players to move this setting to zero is too far the original layouts of the open Zone in cyberspace stages were just not made for this sort of thing and we get these absurd strats as a result open zone is affected heavily too open Zone platforming sections were previously skippable with speedrun tech but now it's simple to entirely avoid hard sections of movement with these sliders deceleration is a big change but there's another change that has also shaken up the speedrunning community quite a bit the spin dash while it doesn't break the game alone it definitely makes deceleration hit even harder spin dash hasn't been included in a Mainline Sonic game for quite some time but this is one of the most powerful iterations of the move you can activate the spin dash from a standstill and rev it up or activate it while moving on the ground it can also be used via stomp or landing on the ground just like a drop Dash this tool is incredibly powerful as they can actually surpass the limits of the speedometer depending on what terrain or slope Sonic is traveling so far there seemed to have been two main uses for the spindashian gameplay the first is using the spin dash as the best way to immediately gain speed by stomping into a spin dash you can become grounded again and already be at top speed without missing a beat in a game where Sonic loves to fly up into the air having this amount of control over the character is very impactful spin dash is insanely powerful for covering gaps speedrunners have already labbed out some really cool setups for gaps that were really slow before not only are these strats fast they seem consistent as spin dash gives you plenty of room to work with another really cool thing that spin dash does is similar to a speed run Tech in the game known as slide watching by boosting then sliding into a surface you can boost again into a trick launch State this was used to gain a ton of height and distance in the speedrun before because you still maintain an air boost even after all that this was used to quickly Traverse areas that will Troublesome to navigate spin dash can actually have the same effect when flying through the air it's not currently known why this happens but it can activate and this is an extremely powerful tool for Sonic to have in his toolkit while there haven't been any new skips found just yet with spin dash it seems very possible it was found by a Twitter user that using spindash can actually allow the camera to clip out of bounds when using photo mode not sure why this happens but it seems to break certain ways the game was intended to be it stands to reason that something big could be found with the addition of this new movement tool make sure to subscribe if you want to see what else it breaks while spin dash is seemingly super broken the main problem speedrunner's faced was that in any percent run you're never going to start with the spin dash the whole goal is to start a speed run from scratch AKA a new file then complete the game as fast as possible the problem with this for Frontiers is that spin Dash's walked is basically post game content however update 2 actually added something that we'll be able to fix this new game plus New Game Plus allows the player to choose a file they have completed the game with and carry over abilities and stats from prior playthroughs including all of the super broken abilities that we had to grind to unlock normally and spin dash while there still isn't an official category for this on the boards yet they're undoubtedly will be the speedrunning community of Sonic Frontier seems incredibly hyped about the prospects of what NG plus can bring to the game as a Mainstay some have even gone as far to claim that NG plus will likely become the main category people choose to speedrun from here on out with top Runners already giving times that rival those are the best any percent runs I can see this happening there are a few skills we currently and formerly routed into the any percent speedrun because of how fast they were stomp is a great example costing a decent amount of skill points to unlock it is one of the best combat and movement abilities when using speedrun tank spin slash allows for the easily the most broken Tech in the game hit and run this was routed out and essentially replaced by the tech known as the slingshot that is done with the stomp ability however now that Runners start with any steel they want from the beginning of the run it changes everything while it's hard to know if NG plus will truly pick up that much steam it will change the way the run is played out and seeing how it can develop will be really interesting but enough about what's been broken let's check out some of the things the devs fixed while most of the speedrun tech and Strat seem intact wyvern Escape skip was actually patched out with this update wyvern Escape skip worked by getting text stored from bosses in the area then querying the text while on this wall the wall would hold you in place near the end of the path of the chase sequence instead of warping you to the start like normal this would not only skip the chase sequence but allow Sonic to die during the following cutscene allowing us to skip it while I don't think this patch was really targeted at the speedrunning community it did affect us they patched the property that allowed the walls to hold Sonic in place even through the code that was supposed to warp him away one of the main theories by community members was that a play tester may have found this bug during the new challenge content in the game by ending the challenge time while stuck on a wall while a relatively small change for the Casual player it is a massive hit to the community as this Strat was theorized and lapped out for weeks West became one of the biggest skips in the game early on and will sadly be missed Sonic frontier's free content updates have been incredible so far the amount of change in pure overhaul that has been done in the first two content updates have been enough to make the game feel brand new and we still have one more even bigger patch to go [Music]
