is it possible to beat Super Mario Sunshine without jumping a question that pondered in my mind one day while I was maybe sipping coffee or something I don't know but that is what I am attempting today the goal of this challenge is to complete the first seven shines in all seven worlds which will unlock the last area in the game Corona mountain from there we can get to the final boss Bowser and once we defeat them it's the end of the challenge and of course we will be doing this all without jumping at all so let's go through Mario's move set and classify what's technically considered a jump so the moves I cannot use throughout the entirety of the run are a single jump double jump triple jump spin jump or that weird kickflip thing and we can't use any objects that will assist our jump either like wall jumps jumping off a rope jumping from poles trees or gates jumping on a squid or jumping from the water all of Yoshi's jumps are banned - even if Mario technically isn't the one jumping I'm still not gonna use it so with Yoshi there is literally no way to gain elevation also pushing off Yoshi I'm considering a jump to so it'll be harder to get off of him and with that all being banned how in the world am I gonna get elevation in the first place well there's two main ways that I'm going to be using throughout the run while the hover nozzle is mostly used for horizontal platforming it still does boost you slightly in the air downside of this is that I'm going through a lot of water this way there is a rocket nozzle that really boosts you in the air but it's not always available in every mission and sometimes you can't even get to it in a certain area making it totally unusable there the other option for elevation is through the dive and front somersault press B to dive forward and then click a to do a front somersault now yes I know what you're thinking hey is the jump button right well not always when you're swimming a will bring you to the surface and when you're on a Ledge a pulls you up on to that ledge and when you are diving a performs a somersault the game even defines it as its own separate action still not convinced well if you look at the official definition of a jump you will see that it says push oneself off a surface and into the air by using the muscles in one's legs and feet and clearly the feet aren't doing the pushin here from this position and that is my master's thesis as to why I don't see it as a jump all right let's get into this so the run starts off simple enough everything is pretty grounded you just fight a few goopy piranhas Bianco Hills is the first area in the game I got over this wall by climbing up this tree and then hovering on over the first shrine is pretty grounded as well the shine where you fight PD the Piranha is way up here but I easily hover to the windmill and then hovered over his bellybutton to defeat him then we get to the third shine or the first secret mission the bane of this run and I will get into why that is we first need to get into this cave up here on the hill but there's this cliff that is just way too high and far too hubber too luckily there's this path of ropes and wood platforms to get over there this is also where I learned that you can't use the rope to get onto the wood platforms and hovering doesn't work on the ropes so we can use this hill over there and hover past these dumb ropes now the tunnel is up on these slopes here but I found out you can actually hover along these slopes and you won't fall down this is actually a trick for slopes that I'll be using throughout the run and this is where the fun begins see there's a reoccurring theme throughout Mario Sunshine and it's these levels that have shadow Mario take away your flood for a bit and leaves you with trying to platform across these blocks for a short section and since we can't jump our main method of getting distance and height is removed from us and problems already begin at the very start of this level there's a block that we simply cannot jump on however the saving grace in these levels is the front somersault by doing this we can barely grab onto the ledge of the block here however the main downside of this method is the amount of space you'll need first to dive but by moving diagonally at each of the blocks we can slowly climb up and make it to the top if you're a bit imprecise you won't have enough room and you just bonk your head on to the block next part wasn't as bad you just got to be patient and walk between these blocks and then simply dive through these cubes then there's these two stars first I tried diving across them but it seemed that they were just way too far away to make it so I add the somersault to the first one then for the other - I lined up at the very edge of the star timed it so I slid to the very end of the point of the star and we make it across then we're not done see the shine is also elevated so we have to line up on this runway and somersault into the shine as well and this is only the first secret mission the next mission is a bit more straightforward you just got to get some red coins in a village I use the buildings for height to get the coins and the water wheel to get back up on the buildings but then the star spawns up on this rope and while we can get close we can't jump on to it but out of sheer luck this level happens to be the first stage where you can get the rocket nozzle by the cave from the last level so we can hover over to the nozzle then use it to blast my way up onto the shine and get the shine in a flashy way Petey piranhas next and he's just chillin up here so once again the rocket nozzle is available in the mission so I used it to get up there then I just shot them down and beat them like before now we got another secret level even getting to this one can be tricky you would think that you can use these logs to get into the cave I don't know I couldn't do it I just barely can't get enough height to get in luckily the spiders around here are super bouncy so I hovered over them and bounced my way over now starts the secret section these platforms are a real pain in this level is littered with them you gotta act fast and line up your somersaults because they keep on flipping and they move in the most random patterns it seems I kept dying on this part a lot but eventually everything lined up and I somersaulted my way to victory now if you're curious on this platform you could actually flip on to the star and get the 1up but more importantly you can make it over to the cube a jump that normally uses a wall kick to get over there I wrote it over then somersaulted to the next cube this one didn't require any jumping and once at the top I just walked off then we get to the last flip area this one was even harder than before but after many attempts I got into a good rhythm of diving from corner to corner of the platforms and somersaulted between them finally reaching the shine last mission in the first world is shadow Mario and it was easy killed them in like two seconds now we get to Rico Harbor and this area consists of many railings and girders that we would normally have to jump across for the first shine you do need to get up some platforms to fight the boss so we can skip across this section by landing on the beam then hovering to the ground here spray this jellyfish then hover onto said jellyfish and catch the platform just in time to lift this up now we got a fight Squidward so normally you would have to jump on his tentacles so you can pull his nose without him hitting you but if you actually grab his nose right after he hits the ground for whatever reason he can't hit you as you pull it making this boss not too bad mech signs pretty easy you're just riding a squid the whole time no jumps needed then there's the cage to shine spray normally you would have to climb up all these rails and girders to get to the very top of the level and jump in the cage that way so I started looking for ways to climb up first I used the lift like before then hovered onto the cage above the lift but I still couldn't get to the rails from this height and this crane was no help either what I was able to hover to this roof then I hovered from roof to roof over this rail which connected to one of the beams up here that I used to walk over then I hovered over to this beam which was at the same elevation now from here there's actually another way to get into the cage I dropped down caught my fall with the hover to grab on to the bottom of it and down here there's a panel that you can flip open and get these shine ah and now we're back with another secret level first problem is in fact how hide the secret entrances so we start by getting on to the girders like we did before and this one looks like the closes we can get to the level but after various attempts it seemed like I was barely not close enough to make it so I began to look around on other rails to try and get some elevation sure enough there was another little lift here on this level however you can't get nearly as close to the cave so I tried to get up on the next level and that's where I saw the rocket nozzle so if I made it one level higher that I could rock it into the cape however this was way too big of a gap to cross and I couldn't even get enough height by using this lift arm to get out meaning this was as high as I was gonna get when all else failed I went back to plan a and somehow barely made it oh sweet I think the key here this time was to fall for a little bit then use your hover to maximize the horizontal distance in the secret area the time was oddly manageable all of the blocks here were at similar elevations so I can just slide along there are some tricky dives between certain blocks and these spinny things so you got to be a bit patient but I was still able to get the shine now we fight Squidward yet again pretty simple just hovered on this fruit dispenser made my way on this stone thing and started messing with them for a bit but once I found out how long his tentacles actually could reach I went over and beat him in the same way now we are surfing on squids on the water again except this time we are trying to get eight red coins it went pretty smooth to start so far you can get seven of the eight coins very easily by just surfing and then there's this coin this one elevated coin and you have to jump to get it there is no other way to get this high you can't use any of your other moves like hovering or somersaulting because you're stuck on this squid and can't get off of it but what if I never get on it you see to spawn the coins and start the timer you first have to jump on this big button but you don't have to get on the squid if you don't want to instead what I did was turn around jump in the water here climbed up this gate hover to the land then to this section and from there to the submarine so that I was high enough to hover to the red coin and get it but were not done we've already wasted 40 seconds of the two minutes to collect this one coin and I tried swimming to the rest of the coins but it was simply not high enough so I had to swim all the way back to the start by using this super fast swimming method by spamming the swim button in the hover button that looks something like this and by doing all of that I made it to the squids with 45 seconds left that gave me just enough time to get rest of the seven coins in one run and it's a good thing I had the extra time too because I totally choked on the last coin and at the turn around but I made it with three seconds left okay pretty well four seconds but three sounds better so now that that's all done you can simply ride over and get you've got to be kidding me we've come so far the end is so close it's just taunting me it's this really it all that timing and routing for nothing well you know I said you can't get off your squid one you're on it well I lied because while you are not supposed to be able to get off your squid once on it there is a way to glitch it because there's one pianta in this entire ocean that's on a duck floaties that for whatever reason if you hit him at the right angle at just the right speed you bounce off his head and the blooper disappears and from there we can simply just swim over and get our shine okay next mission another shadow mario chase this one's not nearly as bad it can be a bit annoying to chase them on the rails but nothing major now we get to gelato Beach shine one the dune bud Castle secret this time the entrance to the secret level is very easy to get to the level itself not so much literally the problems start as soon as you start the level because of these dumb sand blocks these things disintegrate away once you touch them and there are space so there is little room to dive into a somersault well it is very precise if you manage to dive just right you can do this and that was the easy part these next set of thinner elevated blocks are even more precise especially the last part with only two blocks in length I eventually made it though by grabbing on the very ends of the blocks from there the path wasn't as precise but I still needed to keep moving at a decent pace to eventually make it to the sand castle and oh boy just look at this beast we gotta climb it was looking alright at first just a few somersaults to gain some height the problem that arises when we get to this block we can somersault onto it but once we're on there there is nothing we can do there is simply not enough runway to somersault to a higher platform and this sand keeps disintegrating making this part pretty frustrating so unfortunately we are going to have to use our first jump to get on this platform NoHo but wait guys you're gonna want to stick around to see how I scaled to the top of nokey Bay how I platformer the secret of the village underside and how I got Yoshi up to this pipe here and well yes you do need a jump in this level here I'd say we alter this challenge a bit what if we break it up into two different challenges the first one being is it possible to beat Super Mario sunshine without jumping when you have flood on your back ie we're just not including the shines where you don't have flood everything else including getting to the secret areas is all fair game and the other challenge how many secret levels can you beat in Mario Sunshine without jumping so far three of the four are possible and we had to use three jumps in total one here another to get up then somersault onto this block and one more spin jump to the shine okay let's get a move on the next shine with the mirrors wasn't too bad general strategy here was to keep climbing these trees to get elevation and then make your way over the wiggler bossfight kind of created a problem since you had to get up onto his body to hit him and you normally can't reach that high however I used the sand-dunes for a bit of height to get up on him and for the final hit I hit him near the water so we would be at a lower elevation next was the sand bird in which you first need to get in this tower I quickly realized that I needed to jump on this trampoline to reach there and I couldn't even hover because I was coming from a slide surface and for some reason while in this state you cannot hover so I tried getting close to the slide without touching it and hovering from the mirrors didn't work either I was thinking of what to do next while jumping on this guy's head here when I decided just to go for it hit this edge of the train in such a way that I wasn't in the slide animation which allowed me to hover on over and the sand bird part was pretty simple the next shine is the interaction of races to this fake pianta guy at first I kept losing to him because climbing up the trees was just way too slow but luckily the rocket nozzle came to the rescue again and I used it to easily rocket my way to victory red coins in the coral reef was easy peasy your hair is greasy and now we're at the shadow mario chase which wasn't too bad either I just climbed the palm trees to get elevation once again and the next world we get to is peanut Park first level you're in a roller coaster the whole time so no jumps required but the next mission we have another secret stage and it's not too bad actually first I killed a mole then hovered into his home and the secret part of the level was mainly these blocks that disappear the only place where I actually needed to gain elevation there were conveniently placed trampolines that I can somersault on to then I just domain the next shine red coins on the pirate ships is a bit more tricky though for this level I have to get these red coins around these ships at various high elevations on top of that the collision of these ships can be off let's say which sucks when you don't have the option of jumping off and normally when you fall off you just land in some water but for me if I land in this normally nice water there's no way to get out of it the pool is surrounded with all these walls and I can't jump out of it so the only thing to do if I get stuck here is to exit the level and try again which resets all of the coins I collected so I have to be very careful let's say I got the coins on the ships and then had to carefully use the ship's rotation to get on this pole here got the few that were on the cages which left the one that was way up here so again I had to use the ship's rotation to my advantage and somehow did this then I could simply hover over to the shine from there next one I just thought it killed some Yoshi turtle whatever's pretty simple the shine after that requires a lot of vertical platforming and jumping up the back of a ferris wheel to reach an electric turtle yeah scroll of that I just went up to the place I was in the last mission and you can actually hover through the ferris wheel from here to skip everything from there I just covered up these ramps drop down and hover it onto the gate slop that turtle out of here and now I could hover over to the ferris wheel and get the shine now we get to the first mission where we actually need Yoshi so we just throw fruit at him go to the merry-go-round and it's another secret mission oh boy the first part actually looks harder than it really is you can just walk over these rotating blocks and somersault onto the platform now it gets tricky so we got a bunch of these Yoshi blocks floating around that we have to get on and we can actually make it between them by somersaulting to them as diving won't make the distance but it requires a lot of precision diving from point to point of these blocks barely making the jumps in some cases it is hard but very doable then I somersaulted to the orange block which carried me over here so I got to the next block over here and we hit another wall the shine is placed way up there and the only way up is this block here the only option I had was to try and somersault to this block which was nowhere even near the height I needed to get up there so we do actually need to use another jump to get up here and another three jumps to reach here then we can actually somersault over to the shine and we're still not done yet and the other secret levels I had enough of a runway to somersault into the shine but this time it's another story I tried over and over and over again to somersault into the star but it was just out of reach I even tried diving into a ground pound but I was barely not making it and I went all the way up to this platform to see if I can reach it from here but no I really did not want to use another jump in this stage but eventually somehow I aligned myself up at the very edge douve and barely touch the shine without using another jump so in total I had to use a minimum of one two three four jumps in this level that puts our total jump counter now to seven but the no jump challenge where you have flood is still alive and kicking let's go shadow Mario mission is once again last and it's simple he stays pretty grounded now we move on to the next area Syrena Beach the entrance to this level is on top of some buildings this time but we can use this lady's big head to bounce our way up and there's a pineapple in the pipe but no matter we've unlocked Yoshi and we have to get him to eat the pineapple so to get him out of his egg we got to bring a fruit all the way up there this already creates some problems since I couldn't somersault or use flood when carrying a fruit but I did see this pear on a closeby roof here so I used this trampoline right next to it and then chugged fruit after fruit until I finally landed the shot and we got Yoshi so now I just need to get to the pineapple and luckily Yoshi starts up on a roof so we're already at a high elevation I can use these trampolines to get all the way over here and I was at a loss this is as far as I could go there is no way I was to reach this roof up here it's just too high on top of that even if I could theoretically get Yoshi up there which I can't without jumping he still can't reach the pineapple with his tongue so he needs to be at this platform which is even more unreachable there is no possible way of getting up here so is that really it is this how both runs end do I have to use my first jump while hopping flood on my back so I was gonna continue the run here but this video turned out to be much longer than I initially planned so for the first time ever I am making a two-parter video so tune back in next Friday for part 2 of this series where I will be finishing this game and I will be finishing this game and if you're watching this after June 19th 2020 the part two is already out what are you waiting for go see how it ends a link for that will be in the description but for now thanks for watching and I will see you guys next week be there [Music]
