Interview: Regular Show Creator J.G. Quintel

my name is jg Quintel and i am the creator of regular show I loved watching cartoons I grew up on The Simpsons I didn't miss an episode at all that was like the one we were all quoting constantly I really liked drawing and I liked art for as long as I can remember I never wanted to really be anything else when I found out that it's you know actually something that people do for a living I was like I really want to do that so I'm into college and now I'm doing it in school you had to make a film every year so I made this film and it has Mordecai in it and has Benson in it it really was just the way we acted in school like all the oh and like the that is me and my friends from school being idiots because it's animation I mean you can do anything so they could have been human but that would have been kind of boring all the characters from my films that's what they've happened to be if you get past the fact that it's a Getty and a gumball machine and a lollipop they really are all just kind of normal people hanging out [Applause] we spend so much time making the show and we just come to the studio every day a lot of us work you know over the weekend and we really want it to be good they're gonna go lay down alright first I want to show you this poster I was like I want it to be regular show but it'll be like this big and then it will just be on this huge poster so you can see right here you have to get really close I tried to get them to put it on bus stops but they're like that would be the biggest waste of money alright so this is my office right here it's really messy because I never take care of it so we've got my favorite movie one of my favorite bands my other favorite bands yeah here's a lot of our episodes that we have I keep track on note cards I might creepy idea lamp which the bulb is out but someone was gonna throw that away can you believe they're gonna throw that away it's got hair on it like real hair we got some pops pillows too from the up front so I guess if I ever did get to take a nap but take it on pops his face be alright oh yeah here's a bunch of like fan stuff that we've like printed off the internet like cakes Halloween costumes somebody got a tattoo of the baby ducks all kinds of different stuff a lot of people who come through coaching that we're going to this stairwell and kind of tag whatever they want some of this stuff is really old [Music] all right so this is Mike and Jill hello this is where we put together animatics Mike's cutting down an episode right now this is where we take storyboards from just a stack of drawings into actual footage that you can watch and see how it's playing before it gets animated [Music] this is a really good way to see if it's gonna work or not dude dude what's your hurry trash boat [Music] Pizza King what else man whoa this is one of our major rooms for writing this is the marble room as you can see tons of marbles they kind of like sink over the years of them they have to like to add more at the top I really like someday there's gonna be an earthquake and I just go there's some like really old drawings from the beginning of the show and this is the key to making a quality story right here it's probably the simplest thing ever but we'd be surprised how hard it is to get it's something to fit in that we do all of our storyboarding on post-its like this so it's all on paper still and it'll just be like one storyboard will be like four or five hundred post-its to to make a whole story and then it all gets blown up cleaned up it's a ton of work ton of work to make these things I'm JG quintal and I'm glad that you were along to see where we make Regular Show and I hope it wasn't lame it's so much fun so much fun so much fun so much fun [Music]
